Ice Cube is being conned by some of the worst MAGA propaganda out there. Chris Rock would fail a very basic civics test about how the American government works. And now 50 Cent is encouraging people to vote for Donald Trump because of… taxes. Jesus. 50 Cent posted this social media yesterday:

Why is it that the richest Americans always vote for “tax cuts” even though NONE of them pays the actual tax rate anyway? Whether a president or a candidate raises taxes or lowers taxes, American tax law has so many loopholes, most millionaires and billionaires are rarely (if ever) paying within their tax bracket. 50 Cent is no different – dude’s got accountants. He’ll find a million deductions and loopholes and probably pay less 10% of his income in federal taxes. State taxes, I’m not so sure, but… that’s the deal you make when you live in New York, dude.
And seriously, no amount of tax-increases-on-the-wealthy could make me ignore Trump’s rampant racism and white supremacy. Why is that Ice Cube, Chris Rock and 50 Cent are all so eager to pretend that Trump and his people are NOT white supremacists? What kind of very specific denial is this?

The percentage of black male trump supporters is much higher than black women. I mean, it’s still low compared to all other men, including btw, Hispanic males. But, it’s interesting. I feel that in general, the issue with black male trump supporters is one we are very familiar with from all men; misogyny. Taxes pay for the less fortunate. It pays for people with disabilities, the old, the unemployed etc. I’m always amazed when Americans talk about paying less and less tax. It’s like they don’t care about society at all! I hate seeing tax money wasted on politicians bonuses, but I’d never want people in my society to go with the basic things they need like healthcare, education etc.

Yes there is way too much waste in DC and we should absolutely be outraged at how our tax dollars are used but if you want a functioning society then you have to pay for it.
I completely agree with the point you are making, but I’d like to add that it’s a misconception that taxes help the less fortunate. Taxes help everyone regardless of wealth and background. You don’t pay taxes out of the goodness of your heart. You pay it because it’s a cheaper and more efficient way to receive healthcare, education and public services. Pooling finances in a single government overseen pot from which everyone can draw ultimately saves everyone money and improves everyone’s living standard. I’m not suggesting that everything should be overseen this way, but there’s is ample evidence across the world that this model can work very successfully within a capitalist economy.
Our societies are built on the idea that churches will care for “the least of us” and government will pay for things like infrastructure, etc. That’s the government model. However, when churches started failing (and hurting the masses versus lifting them up and caring for their congregations) people look to government to fill the gap. That’s the very fight between the republicans and the democrats. Dems have hearts, realize churches are decimated (through their own mismanagement, but the ‘least of us’ suffer because of) and want government to fill the gap. gov’t cannot do so, without funding. The Repubs don’t pay their fair share of taxes to make that happen, and scream wildly when Dems attempt to hold them accountable. How to solve? The onloy thing I can think of is a 100% overhaul of the tax system to percentages. EVERYONE pays 10% of their income and EVERYONE pays the taxes where the money is earned and there are NO LOOPHOLES. That would create more balance and be so much more fair for all. If you earn 40,000/year you pay $4,000 in taxes. If you earn hundreds of millions of dollars, you still pay 10% BUT WITH NO loopholes.
The tax system would be fair. Some things negotiable (eg: it could be a higher rate for corporations, but with no loopholes, say 15%. Also, maybe anyone earning under a certain amount pays no tax..(meaning some folks with part time jobs trying to keep body and souls together might actually have a chance). It would also reduce the racism in taxes, etc. A system built on percentages of income, with NO LOOPHOLES would be very fair, and benefit the ‘least of us’ without gouging the entrepreneurs, the honest business folk, etc). It’s the only way I see out of this mess
Here’s the thing too though–churches are theoretically supposed to care for the least among us, but even when they were able to do that, they often didn’t. There were always extensive caveats in place regarding who, exactly, was worthy of that grace. And many people who didn’t comply with those standards were often left out in the cold, and isolated from any social security net they would have otherwise had. And this was well before church attendance went on the decline.
The govt model is not that churches will pick up the slack on this. The govt model, similar to the model of the church, was that some people deserve help, while others do not, and they will extend the help to those they deem worthy of receiving it, and turn their backs on anyone they think is unworthy, as punishment.
In addition to this, something someone pointed out to me was that a huge reason why America does not have the same sorts of social security net like European and Scandinavian countries is because of racism, specifically anti-black racism. Implementing those types of social security nets, and things like universal health care would mean that black people in America would have to be covered as equally as anyone else, and there are some people who would willingly choose to die before they extended any type of equality to black people in America.
A lot of the opposition to social welfare in America comes down to this attitude–they could do it, but doing it might mean that someone who they think doesn’t deserve that help might receive it, and they’ll be damned if that person receives a penny of support from anyone. Poverty in America is not something to alleviate, because people think it’s punishment for having screwed up in your life. If you worked hard enough, earned more money, had the good sense to not be born as black, to not fall sick unexpectedly, etc., then you wouldn’t be destitute. If only you got rid of all your human failings, you wouldn’t be in a vulnerable position. The fact that people can’t do that is seen as worthy of condemnation and punishment. Poverty has to be kept as this condition that is inherently shameful and punitive, because otherwise, people would have to consider the fact that they’re two steps away from that situation themselves, and people in America would rather not confront that idea.

Want to shout out to a great Black British thinker named Stuart Hall who said that “race is the modality by which we experience class.” Once you’ve got that much wealth, no matter your actual skin color or heritage, your personal prerogatives align with whiteness (whiteness, Stuart argues, is less a race and more a class position, the highest seat of power) — hence why people like 50 see themselves as above the reach of racism and so vote only to hold onto the money that gives them proximity to power/the protections of whiteness. okay that’s my TED talk lol

I’ve seen tax firms release alerts about how super rich people should protect their assets if Biden wins and how they can move their assets across borders with minimal tax impact. They’re the only ones who benefited under Trump’s tax cuts and, from what I’ve seen, they don’t care if their country turns into a banana republic as long as their precious money is OK. It takes a certain kind of selfishness to think that way.
My parents support trump solely for the tax breaks too. My father literally told me the only people I needed to care about were my immediate family. Absolutely terrifying mindset. It may be easier to dismiss 50 than Chris Rock, who is a thoughtful guy. There’s a great passage in Ayad Akhtar’s Homeland Elegies, where he writes about a Black friend with a successful career and lifelong commitment to helping his community, who always votes Republican. The reason? As a Black man in White supremacist America, he does not trust white institutions, period. (Chris Rock said something similar). So he would rather vote for less government, which leaves more money/ power in his own hands which HE can determine what to do with.
This makes sense in theory, but in practice not so much, not in America where Black men are gun down by cops on the regular and little is done about it. Even if you could fix the community problems with the extra money you keep from less taxes, how does one fix the structural problems that caused so many of the issues in the first place? As long as Government decides the structure only by making sure the government that is in place is not trying to disenfranchised your community, can progress be made.

My black male coworker told me yesterday that he is torn because Trump is good for the economy and he is tired of people making him feel like he’s wrong for believing that. Bush inherited Clinton’s economy and tanked it. Trump inherited Obama’s economy and tanked it. I can’t in any way understand why Republicans get credit for being strong on the economy. The economy isn’t just the stock market. It is jobs, wages that keep pace with living costs, and access to affordable housing. People are stupid.
My totally unfounded, not backed up theory about the economy is this: whatever economic policy you set today, you will only really see the full effects of it five to ten years down the line. Which means that a lot of the Democratic policies, which tend to be fairly sound, which are set in the president’s first term, don’t really manifest themselves in a tangible way until they’re on their way out of the office.
This is why Republicans inherit economies that are doing really well, which then tank. But they get the benefit of being able to take credit for all the work their Democratic predecessors did, as if their mere presence in office fixed up the economy somehow.
Meanwhile, the Trump tax shit show is something people will be unraveling for decades to come. So much of American prosperity after WW2 only came about because of policies implemented by people like Roosevelt and Eisenhower, etc. The reason the 80s were such a good time for people was because of that. People were able to earn well, and benefit from the enormous investments made in American infrastructure in the decades prior.
But who got the credit for all of that prosperity? Ronald Reagan, who subsequently started the ball rolling on undoing all of that. People have short memories, so they associated the good times of the 80s and the 90s with Reagan, his tax cuts and his deregulation efforts, and figured that he was the one who deserved the credit, because of his shitty policies no less.
And then what wound up happening was that we’re seeing the effects of those exact policies today, decades later, well after he’d left office, long after the people who had it good in those days were able to build their wealth and their security, leaving future generations to suffer heavily under the resulting fall out.
Republicans deliberately abuse the good times to 1) win elections, and 2) ram through their own shitty reforms. And they never get held to account because by the time everything fall apart, thanks to them, they’re long gone. And then the next set of Democrats have to clean everything up, set everything right, only for the Republicans to swan in on the results, take everything apart, and piss it all away again.

In Germany I pay about 40% in taxes and social fees (pension, social security and health insurance) per month. My income is on the better half of the median income. I am totally fine with this because taxes and other fees – if used in the right way by the state – pay for infrastructure, education, affordable housing, health care, pensions and whatever else is useful for the people. This way I got to go to university for free, do not have to worry about giant potholes on the street or power outages, and will not become homeless or lose my health insurance if I lost my job. Taxes are not evil, greedy people are. Also, can’t complain about the state of the German economy either…

I’m really, really scared about this evil being re-elected here and even if not, the damage is extensive and the courts are stacked against us and environmental concerns will only continue to get worse. I am not sure why this mindset was never adopted in the US. Through higher taxes longterm everybody saves! People put the money they spend on inflated education and healthcare prices back into the economy. This, in turn, reduces homelessness, unemployment, debt and bankruptcy. More people are able to start businesses or stay at work. It would make so much progress towards curtailing social inequality. Yes, paying less tax may be attractive at face value, but then you still have to pay hundreds of thousands over a lifetime to remain healthy, maintain an emergency fund, pay tolls and educate yourself and your children. And even then you’ll not be able to do it to a standard that you normally could under a government system. Americans end up paying tax twice over as they are taxed for their income and then they end up paying for education and healthcare which is also taxed. It boggles the mind why anyone would willingly live in a system like that.
For the comfort of feeling that they are not pay for those people they don’t like. That’s what it comes down to in America, the fear some have that their tax dollar is going towards assisting the undeserving who just happens to be people who look unlike them.
And the time off! Oh man. Seriously, it is not about productivity.

Kim Kardashian won’t come out and say she’s not voting for Trump, because a lot of her work for criminal rehab was contingent on Trump’s support. She lobbied with him quite heavily to secure several pardons for people, in a rather public way. If she came out and said she’s not voting for him, people might come out and undermine the legitimacy of that work, which she doesn’t want. It’s all about how things look to people, and that’s always been what Kim has cared about.

I have an easier time accepting 50’s logic than people like Kanye and Ice Cube because at the very, most tiny micscopic level of least he is admitting to something lots of people deny. It isn’t a good reason to do something so profoundly harmful and selfish, but it is an actual reason that makes sense to me. The rest of the men mentioned all have offered a big pile of complicated without any real clarity, but 50 is over here laying it out real simple: fuck you, I got mine.
And just to note cause people love to argue, I dont think being a greedy dick is good or ok, just something that makes more sense than whatever the F Ye and Cube are on these days.

I can’t speak to whatever the heck Kanye is doing–I want to say his support for Trump stems from his ego being bruised by Obama, as well as a genuine appreciation for the public idiocy Trump spews so fearlessly into the world without recourse. Everyone who supports Trump essentially wants to be selfish–they want to say whatever the hell they want, do whatever the hell they want, be whatever the hell they want, without any consequences, and anything less than that is seen as an infringement on their freedoms.
With Ice Cube, what pisses me off is that he’s trying to intellectualize it somehow. He’s not an unintelligent person, but he’s also not seeing the full picture here. Ice Cube feels spoken to and seen by the Trump campaign, and that is superseding the larger considerations at stake. You can’t vote for someone just because they are nice to *you*, personally. This is the mistake people made with Bush, all those years ago. It’s the whole, “He’s someone I can have a beer with,” logic. Yes, you can have a beer with Bush and gab with him, but you have to realize that at the end of the evening, he’s going to charm you into being stuck with the fucking tab. And yes, the Trump campaign took an interest in Ice Cube’s endeavours for uplifting black people, but their DoJ is still going to screw black people over disproportionately, and then subsequently blame them for their own lack of prosperity. The fact that they simply reached out to Ice Cube won’t ever change that.
There’s a time and a place, I think, to talk about the complicated reasons why people like this are into Trump. I do think Trump presents something very aspirational for a lot of people. He does what he wants, and says what he wants, and nothing no one says otherwise has an impact on him. He got impeached, and he’s still president. He got covid, and he’s still alive. They see in him the guy who quits the job that he hates, and walks out the door swearing at his boss, while everyone else cheers. Because they desperately want to be able to do the same thing. And I think he can be enormously charming, and personable, in ways people respond to. But that’s also how scammers operate. They charm people and swindle them out of their money, and disappear into the night laughing. Trump is a scammer par excellence, and people are falling for this shit.

I live in New York City. My income is high enough that my effective tax rate is 50% (that’s federal, state, and NYC taxes combined.) I really don’t mind paying half my income to various governments, because this is how we get to have nice things like roads and public schools. I’m disgusted by 50 Cent’s mindset here.

I wouldn’t worry too much about this. The people who would get their voting advice from 50Cent wouldn’t vote Biden anyway. Trump and the Republicans have spent a lot of time and money going after the Black male vote. If they knew ANYTHING about Black people they would know that it’s Black WOMEN who do the voting in the Black community.
