Tim Gunn calls Jon Gosselin a slob, sort-of defends Kate’s fug hair

There are few people I love more than Tim Gunn. The man is a gentleman, he’s got a good heart, he’s a wonderful mentor, and his diction is perfect. Plus, I love silver foxes. But the one thing that Tim Gunn hates is bad fashion. He hates when people don’t dress appropriately for their ages or careers, he hates when clothing doesn’t fit correctly, and he absolutely hates slobs. Thus, he hates Jon Gosselin. Us Weekly got some quotes off Tim at a New York event last night, and Tim was asked for some general fashion tips and insights into some celebrities’ fashions. Tim didn’t just call Jon Gosselin out for being a slob wearing ill-fitting clothes – Tim also defended Kate Gosselin’s “attacked by a beaver” hair, saying he was “accepting” of the fug hockey-player haircut because, “If that’s the way she wants to present herself, then she’s doing a good job.”

Ed Hardy-loving Jon Gosselin is committing “the biggest crime against fashion” for men: Not wearing the proper size. So says Project Runway’s Tim Gunn.

“In his case, everything is too big,” he told Usmagazine.com at the Addressing Psoriasis Fashion Show in NYC Wednesday. “It is what I refer to as the slobification of America. If you want to dress to feel as though you never got out of bed, then don’t get out of bed.”

Gunn, 56, was more sympathetic when the topic turned to Jon’s ex Kate. He told Us he’s “accepting” of her famous asymmetrical hairdo.

Said Gunn, “If that’s the way she wants to present herself, then she’s doing a good job.”

He said he wouldn’t make her over because “I never make people into my dress up dolls. That would be all consuming, and it wouldn’t be appropriate.”

Who does have perfect style?

“Angelina Jolie always gets it right,” Gunn told Us. “And I have to say I am huge Helen Mirren fan. Whether she is having lunch in Los Angeles or she’s on the red carpet or she’s going shopping, she knows who she is. She knows how to present herself to the world and she knows how to look sophisticated and polished.”

[From Us Weekly]

Tim totally has a thing about Angelina Jolie – he’s praised her in interviews before. I don’t think he’s right about her, though – I guess he missed this year’s awards season where Angelina wore one shapeless sack after another. I like Angelina’s “everyday” style, but not her red carpet stuff, which has gotten pretty boring (and ill-fitting!). Tim’s comments about Helen Mirren are totally new to me – but it seems obvious that one silver fox would admire another. I like the way Helen dresses too – she’s sexy in a really classy, age-appropriate way. Sigh. I want to take Tim shopping.

Tim Gunn is the best. I could give him many hugs.

  2. Rae says:

Kaiser, I think you have that backwards. Tim Gunn would take you shopping.

  3. Alexa says:

Personally – I don’t CARE what Tim Gunn thinks. However, I do like that he said this: “I never make people into my dress up dolls. That would be all consuming, and it wouldn’t be appropriate.”

I love Tim Gunn! He seems so wise.

Maybe her hair is fug, but in that photo, Kate’s bod looks great. 8 kids! Yeah, I know she’s had surgery, but 8 kids! Jon looks like he’s still carrying at least 3 of them himself!

Also: our household is all about Tim Gunn. My daughters, my husband and I all can bust out the Gunn impersonation at any given time. We love him.

i love tim – his manners are impeccable and he is always beautifully tailored. it would be fun to have him pop up now and then to give advice. when i was in pastry school my classmates and i would do tim gunn impressions: “hmm…that cake worries me. now make that lavender mousse work!” and so on.

I still laugh at Santino’s Tim Gunn.

I am laughing at the fug-hockey player line. Up here in hockey country, a mullet used to be referred to as hockey hair. As for the lady hockey players, they either have long, in need of a trim and highlights hair or Kate’s hair.

And ignore my “lady” hockey player comment, lately, using the word “lady” just cracks me up.

  8. Shannon says:

As much as Kate’s hair bothers me, I must admit she’s started a trend. I’ve started seeing moms with her hairstyle. And quite frankly it’s an improvement compared to the usual soccer mom close-cropped no-styling-needed fugliness. I never thought I’d say that in a million years.

  9. Sudini says:

Tim Gunn never lets me down. I love him so. He’s a rare gem when it comes to his good manners and graciousness.

  10. Me says:

Kate seems like a HUGE bitch, and if I didn’t have to raise two kids with a full time job, and had tens of thousands of dollars of plastic surgery, I’d look great too. (well, the hair looks like it’s been through a blender)

I see people in my gym with that haircut, and I have to wonder, what were you thinking? And have you looked in the mirror?

“If that’s the way she wants to present herself, then she’s doing a good job.”

Hahaha, what a great backhanded compliment. You stay classy, Tim Gunn, I love you.

Because you haven’t been ridiculed until you’ve drawn the wrath of an old queen.
