First we had a deleted tweet claiming that President Obama called Kanye West a jackass for his stunt interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMAs. Everyone kind of shrugged and said they agreed with him. Obama made the remark off the record before a CNBC interview, and CNBC apologized that the news got out. ABC Nightline anchor Terry Moran tweeted then deleted the news, and CNBC issued an apology, saying Moran “prematurely tweeted before our editorial process had been completed.” Then TMZ posted audio of Obama saying it, which pretty much proved that it happened. Now there’s video of Obama’s offhand exchange, which was never meant to get out but is still pretty amusing nonetheless. After Obama says that Kanye’s a jackass he kind of realizes that nothing he says is off the record and wonders aloud if this sound bite will become like that crazy video of him swatting a fly – viral. (The fly part is in the audio, not the video show above.) Yeah, it will. CNN even aired it.
There’s been some speculation that the whole Kanye West incident was a set up by MTV. After all, this is the network that staged the Bruno Enimen freak out at the MTV Movie Awards. Plus Kanye and Taylor were both pre-scheduled for talk shows the next day, with Kanye to appear on the opening night of Leno’s revived show. I’m just not buying that explanation, though. Kanye’s apology on Leno was way too serious and Taylor was said to be bawling backstage. Sure this worked out to a lot of publicity for all the parties involved, but Kanye seemed really mortified, and I doubt it was staged ahead of time.
One really priceless thing to come out of this way overplayed and over-discussed incident is the “Kanye interrupting” meme. Someone commented with a link to the site Kanyegate, which has plenty of humorous Kanye photos, and there are photos and videos of Kanye interrupting just about everyone and everything with his unique brand of one-upmanship. E! Online and The Daily Mail have more. Kanye won’t live this down for a long time.

I think it’s hilarious how sweetly Obama actually called Kanye a jackass. It sounded really cute (as opposed to aggressive)!
I hope people don’t make too much of this and get their panties in a bunch.
The Kanye memes are so funny too. I love the Edward and Dory ones especially.

Funny. Haven’t we all called Kanye a jackass in the last few days?

Kanye is indeed a jackass, and I think this is one time when we can ALL get behind the president and agree on that!

“why is the president of the united states watching the VMA’s???”
…maybe because he has two young daughters who are very interested in pop culture?

I think that is awesome! Of course he knows what is going on, he has two children that are interested in all of that kind of stuff. It just shows that he is a good father to sit and listen to all of it.
That is one of the best video’s that I have watched in a while.

I hope he truly is embarrassed. Somehow I think his big ego will help him get over it soon enough.
These spoofs of it are hilarious!

just because the prez knew what had happened doesn’t mean he watches the VMAs.
I don’t watch them either, but the fallout from this event was huge and was all over the news.
so, while Brittney is correct, he may not have even watched it.

You don’t have to watch the VMA’s to know what happened. It was all over the news and internet. Unless the President was in an underground bunker, I don’t see how he and everybody else could not know what happened. I really don’t get why everybody is making such a big deal about this. Presidents and other politicians are caught swearing all of the time.

More entertaining than the whole of the VMAs.

viper: Anyone who’s visited a news site in the last four days knows about the Kanye debacle. No VMAs required.

Who is in charge? I distinctly noticed the President giving the hand gestures for “cut” this comment out.
It’s still airing. Why? Hollywood is in charge of the White House now? (yes mainstream media news is only a fantasy construct).
So please explain to me. Why was this aired? One must ask the question- Who is in charge?
On the surface this seems harmless. But it has profound implications.
Clearly Obama is not in charge of the White House.

I don’t have any problem with Obama calling Kanye a jack*ss but it really bugs me that the media recorded and released it when it was obviously supposed to be off the record. Just seems sleazy on the medias part.

Even Rush Limb will agree with Obama on that.

Kanye is a jackass. I think it’s funny how the media keeps harping on it waiting to see if someone is going to come out in support of Kanye and mad at the Prez. I think everyone is pissed at him right now.

Yae, sorry to disappoint your conspiracy theory, but the manner in which this got out was explained. ABC shares a fiber optic connection with another news organization (CBS I think?) and some CBS staff were listening in on the interview. The tweets came from some of them; they didn’t know (or claimed not to know) that those comments were made off the record, and tweeted about them. Once that happened, the cat was out of the bag and it was no longer a big deal to release the video.
And I just think Obama calls it like he sees it. Don’t we want that in a president?
