Jude Law wasn’t around for birth of his fourth child, has no plans to visit

The Show Must Go On For New Dad Jude Law!

Jude Law’s baby-mama Samantha Burke gave birth to their daughter yesterday, a little girl Samantha named Sophia. Jude’s play Hamlet is already in preview performances in New York, and he was photographed in New York yesterday. He’s also scheduled for a New York appearance today, so I seriously doubt he was anywhere near the Florida hospital where Samantha gave birth, or that he has any plans to take a flight down to see his fourth child. At first, People Magazine had a bitchy quote from some unnamed source about how Jude wasn’t at the birth of his fourth child, but People took it down within a few hours, replacing it with Jude’s initial statement, from when he announced Samantha’s pregnancy:

Less than two months after he acknowledged that a model he had dated was pregnant with his child, Jude Law is a father – again.

Samantha Burke, the 24-year-old aspiring actress whom Law met while filming Sherlock Holmes in New York City last year, gave birth to a 5-lb., 12-oz daughter Tuesday night.

“Samantha Burke is overwhelmed with joy at the arrival of her beautiful and healthy baby girl, Sophia,” Burke’s rep, Eileen Koch, tells PEOPLE. “The baby and mom are doing wonderful.”

Law, 36, who has three other children with ex-wife Sadie Frost, is currently appearing in a Broadway production of Hamlet, now in previews.

Law’s rep acknowledged the pregnancy in a statement released last July after reports surfaced in the media that Burke was expecting.

“Jude Law can confirm that, following a relationship last year, he has been advised that he is to be the father of a child due in the fall of this year,” the actor’s rep said. “Mr. Law is no longer in a relationship with the individual concerned but he intends to be a fully supportive part of the child’s life. This is an entirely private matter and no other statements will be made.”

[From People]

While it’s not really any of my business, I do think it shows that despite the “I’m going to be involved” statements Jude has made, he really isn’t going to be part of Sophia’s life. One of Samantha’s friends told the British papers, “Besides financial support, he’s not involved.” No mention of what kind of monthly payments Jude will have to shell out, but I suspect it’s somewhere near the $10,000 a month being reported. Samantha claimed she wasn’t a golddigger, but she might as well name her daughter Sophia Cash Money. There are also reports that Samantha Burke will be selling the first pictures of little Sophia to the highest bidder – and my guess is that Jude won’t be around for the photo session, either.

Poor kid, thanks to the everlasting power of the Internet she’ll be able to see the circumstances of her early life. For most people it takes a while for your mom to say, “Yeah, before you were born I hooked up with The Edge from U2 on a tour bus”.

  2. Harmony says:

what a piece of sh*t. Im boycotting his movies as of NOW. He doesnt deserve support if hes not there for his own children.

    • Abbs says:

Why should he be involved with something he got duped into? It’s not like he expected some whore to purposely set him up when he was sick and had no idea she’d tried this little trick with several other rich men.

Besides, it’s not his kid beyond being him being hijacked as a sperm donor and she’s just an extortion-plotting sperm depository. She can have lots of fun being a single mom and fantasizing that she’s going to “live happily ever after” with him, but in reality, she’s only getting the 2.5 mil out of him–which was her plan all along. Get knocked up by a rich celebrity—she tried it with several other celebrities and even bragged about it to her friends that she was going to get pregnant by a rich celebrity so she wouldn’t have to work at Hooters any more. She deserves no pity for anyone, and I could give a rat’s ass about her spawn.

  3. Jane says:

Eh. He’s paying for it like a decent bloke. He didn’t plan on the child as much as he didn’t plan on having a relationship pre-pregnancy with that lady. I don’t think poorly on him for it. She’s mad? Guess she should have used birth control. And she’s making a bundle, I’m sure some sap will be a great step-father and liver offer. haha

    • Abbs says:

Yup. She actually planned this. She tried getting knocked up previously by Jeremy Piven, 2 Jets football players, and some male model named Tyson. Before this, she even went around and bragged to her friends that she was going to get pregnant by a celebrity so she wouldn’t have to work at Hooters any more. It was in an article I read about a year ago… This was all a big plot on her part—it’s basically an extortion fee he’s paying her for the next 18 years, unfortunately. He’s a good guy—it’s too bad there are celebrity stalkers out there like this that take advantage of that.

  4. Lantana says:

Why does he ALWAYS look like a deer in the headlights? For gawd’s sake, you look at him and think he must be guilty of SOMETHING. My same aunt that said “no such thing as an ugly millionaire” also said, “ain’t nothing worse than a skinny man”. She would have be in a quandry with this guy.

  5. Firestarter says:

Well, even if he isn’t “involved” with the child, at this point, he is paying support, and while that doesn’t mean it’s ok, it beats a lot of other dead beat dads out there.

This woman is a gold digger, he is a man-slut, and they both should be ashamed of the situation, bringing a child into this world for no reason other than greed and carelessness. Idiots! What are they? 15?

  6. ash says:

    *nods head at Firestarter*.

  7. Erin says:

    Nodding head at firestarter also.

  8. Feebee says:

He made a mistake not wearing protection and now he’s paying for it but don’t beat him up for not wanting to be a part of this child’s life.

Lots of kids are born to single mothers or have step-fathers. They turn out fine, it’s not the end of the world. Samantha chose to go through with the pregnancy/keeping the child knowing Jude’s stand.

Guys are = at fault for the this type of result but it’s nature that deems the ultimate responsibility for this lies with the female.

  9. Leticia says:

if he would have worn protection, this wouldn’t have happened. He has himself to blame.

  10. maddie says:

I have ti agree with FireStarter on this.

This is the reason why you shouldn’t sleep with people if your not in a relationship with them.

Birth control does not always work especially when you don’t take your pill and poke holes in the condom.

He should keep it zipped from now on, unless he wants to be shelling out more money in the future.

  11. Iggles says:

I think it’s messed up situation period. However, how is this little girl going to feel if she grows up constantly slighted by her dad in favor of his other children? He got himself into this situation (as did the child’s mother who has more to gain from it), so he needs to man up and be a father to this child. Right now, by staying in new york for a play he looks like scum. He could easily take a day trip to Florida to meet his newborn daughter. He doesn’t have to deal with the mother if he doesn’t want to!

  12. AC says:

The fact that he’s giving her any money shows he’s a decent guy. I don’t think he should be required to be in her life. He may want to have a relationship with the daughter but probably wants to avoid this person he doesn’t even remember well.

  13. M says:

… and she has herself to blame as well for not being on birth control or not taking the morning after pill to prevent pregnancy.

And for the love of god, the child is freaking 1 day old. We can’t judge how involved of a parent he is because he wasn’t present for the birth. She annoucned to the world she was due in early October, so obviously the child came early. We have no idea if/when he was planning to visit the child. Nor do we know how receptive Samantha is to having Jude an active part in the child’s life.

  14. Pole says:

I doubt Ms. Burke has any interest in actually having Jude involved. If she was interrested wouldn’t she keep thing more private since that what he obviously wants? And why didn’t she tell him before? I feel sorry for the kid but honestly – how much can you expect from a man you had a one (or two) night stand with who lives in the other end of the world? It’s not like he had much of a choise in this matter.

  15. princess pea says:

It’s not even a messed-up, unusual situation. Look at that new sitcom (based on a memoir). One night stands sometimes lead to pregnancy. Sometimes that pregnancy results in a baby. Sometimes the sperm donor is a decent bloke who pays his child support. He is not obligated to have a role in the child’s life, and you know what? Neither is she. If she didn’t want to be a single mom, she could have put the baby up for adoption. She’ll be getting better child support payments than the majority of single moms, and she’s got the tabs in her pocket. If he stops paying up, we’ll hear about it.

  16. wow says:

I’ll cut Jude some slcack for not being there for the birth. He’s under contract to be in NY for Hamlet. Even if he were to have took a private plane, he still wouldn’t have made it there in time to witness the actual birth, nor be back in time to continue to fulfill his daily obligations for Hamlet previews.

As for the rest, it’s pretty obvious this girl is going to milk this for what it’s worth. At this point I don’t even think it matters much to her whether or not Jude is around for Sophia. The fact is he’s already acknowledged that he is the father to the public. She probably will just be happy knowing she has a child of someone famous. Some women get off on that alone and somehow thinks that elevates them in society. *shrugs*

Jude may seem slimey, but he does seem to be a great Father to his children with his first wife. I think Jude will be the same for Sophia, once his play run ends. I just don’t think he’d be a brute and totally ignore her existance. I get a feeling he’ll do more than just send a check.

  17. embertine says:

Hell yes, Firestarter. These two are both as bad as each other; the real victim in all of this is the poor babe.

  18. minx says:

I agree with wow.. I think that Jude (though man-slut for sure) is a very involved father with his three kids with Sadie Frost, and he’ll most likely be present in Sophia’s life at some point. I’m not blaming him for not being there for the birth (why should he?) but I think he’ll visit the baby later and probably, my guess, will have someone fly the kid over to stay with him and half-siblings once she gets big enough. I have a feeling he doesn’t really want to get anything to do with Samantha and her family.

  19. Pole says:

I have a feeling he doesn’t really want to get anything to do with Samantha and her family.

I’ve got to say I don’t blame him on that. They seem superintend on milking him for what they can. Trashy!

  20. nona says:

A lot of other celebrities end up forcing themselves in relationships with girls who try to trap them via pregnancy. Eventualy, the mariage doesn’t work and the women start using those children for revenge. There are COUNTLESS of cases like that.

I’m sorry for the little new-born baby girl but I believe Jude is doing the right thing by not getting emotionally involved with her.

  21. Firestarter says:

Just because some greedy woman takes advantage of a man-slut and his inability to keep his dog in the house, doesn’t mean that he has to be in the childs life, other than to support it financially. He made the decision to play and now he has to pay. She was the one who chose to have unprotected sex and keep the baby, so as another poster said, I doubt she cares if Jude is around at all as long as her meal ticket money keeps flowing in.

I also agree with the posters who said that the kid is only a day or two old, he is under contract to do a play in New York, and there is no way knowing what kind of parental figure he will be, so people need to keep their outrage at his absence from seeing the child yet in check. I agree, from all accounts, he has been an involved, loving parent to his children with Frost, and I think that he will, at some point be more involved with this child. If he isn’t, well at least he is doing the financial thing like a man should and that, in the end, will serve the child better than most men do their out of wedlock kids.

  22. jkate says:

I hope that this woman is seriously pro-life. I cannot imagine any other reason I would entrap somebody like this. But if she is pro-life, she ought to wrap it, don’t you think?

  23. Granger says:

I’m cutting him some slack on the not-being-there-for-the-birth thing. When I look back at the births of my kids, I remember the experiences as wonderful, beautiful and awe-inspiring (oh, and painful!), and the moments of pure love between my partner and myself and our baby were indescribable. I canNOT imagine inviting the father into the room if he wasn’t already a big part of my life. It would just be awkward and strange and probably a little sad.

  24. OXA says:

I you can get or make someone pregnant, then YOU can catch a disease. There is no excuse for either of them. They were both reckless and now a child is here with all this crap on the internet to grow up with.

  25. princess pea says:

@ Granger – I keep thinking how I wouldn’t want to be staring at someone’s ladybits as they stretch painfully out of proportion if I didn’t love that person. And how I wouldn’t want someone I didn’t love (or a doctor/nurse/midwife, obvs) looking at mine, either. It’s not a public moment, you know? And some dude I slept with once nine months ago? Yeah, he’s not even invited.

  26. lrm says:

    Harmony:
    C’mon!!!
If you boycotted the movies of every absentee father in hollywood,or mother, for that matter-from both yesterday and today…well, there would be few films you’d see!!!!
Seriously-i miss the days when we didn’t need to make political, moral or ethical choices based on an actor’s background.
    Film content,maybe.
But the personal life of an actor, deciding whether we see a film?
It’s just gotten so ridiculous-this publicity machine.

And,what’s up with the hilarious but immature comments, people,on this issue? people end up pregnant from a one night stand OFTEN. Not the first time, not the last. And yea,he’s paying child support,at the very least.
And frankly, the kid is lucky her father can afford to support her, unlike so many deadbeat dads who simply dont make any money.
    geesh.
That said,Jude has gone waaaaaaaaaaay downhill over the years. used to be so hot, good actor.
now, skeevy and me thinks too many drugs, too much partying.
    ew.

  27. hatsumomo says:

@ Granger: Hee hee, I was thinking somewhere along those lines when I did my hospital vol. hours. This woman was giving birth and the students were allowed to sit in and observe and I kept thinking ‘shouldn’t this be a private time?’. She didn’t mind us being there though. And I had never seen what it looks like in person up til that point when a baby comes out. Its really different than the plastic models stimulating childbirth!

  28. Catherine says:

Wow, what a charming man. *sarcasm*

  29. Laura says:

Hahaha, of COURSE People took the bitchy quote down. They do live in the various orifices of celebrities.

  30. Pole says:

Yeah, it would be better to support yet another no-name goldigger [/sarcacm]

  31. Lantana says:

I was the result of an unwanted pregnancy, a sperm donor that was already married with 4 kids of “his” own, and he never tried to do anything to get in touch with me. I looked him up when I was 19 because I thought maybe he just didn’t know I existed. He accused me of trying to extort money from him (NOT – I never even thought of a money issue as I wasn’t in need at all and it shocked me when he implied it), he said he didn’t owe me “one dime” and got his wife on the phone to prove he told her about me so I couldn’t “blackmail” him. It was a humiliating experience and I’ve never contacted him since. And this man is a pharmacist – meaning he can’t be stupid, but he is STUPID if you get what I mean. So, yeah, kids are born into all sorts of circumstances in this world, but they grow up with so much more information now than we ever did (I’m in my 40’s). I think what would traumatize us may roll off their backs. Not saying that’s a good thing.

  32. flourpot says:

agree w/Firestarter. again. as usual. 🙂 I can totally picture the mother of that baby nomming on his condom to make sure it would leak. Granted, yes, I’m giving Jude bringing a condom the benefit of doubt. Still. Scummy all around.

  33. Andrea says:

And her dumb family had the nerve to say that she was innocent. She just another gold-digging sl-t. And of course Jude is a man whore, but he doesn’t have to be in the child’s life if he doesn’t want to. If I were him I’d keep away from her family too. They are bonkers.

  34. Sigh. says:

Can she sell pics of the baby without Law’s permission? I realize they are not married, but doesn’t he still have some say, deserved or not, in the selling of his child’s image?

  35. Miranda says:

Did one of Jude’s friends say that he was so ill at the time he could barely remember this woman – if the genders were reversed, wouldn’t that be sexual assault? Anyhoo, Jude has a habit of riding bareback with his flings – the infamous nanny stated that he didn’t use condoms with her, so I doubt Ms. Burke needed to prick any holes. Still, that kid is screwed – knowing you exist solely so that your mom can collect a check every month!

  36. Pole says:

@Miranda: I reckon if the genders were reversed Ms. (Mr.?) Burke would be charged with some sort of assult. Now she’s just a victim of an evil man [/sarcasm] Seriously – if he was ill what was she thinking? If he was so drunk that he couldn’t remember her? Me thinks she’s hardly an innocent victim of anything but her own stupidity. It takes two to tango.

  37. Patrice says:

“Besides financial support, he’s not involved.”

What? I’m so sick of hearing bullsh@t lines like this, it was the same with Bridget Moynahan: HOW “INVOLVED” DO YOU WANT A MAN (WHO ISN’T EVEN WITH THE MOTHER) TO BE BEFORE THE KID COMES OUT OF HER BELLY!!?? What exactly is he supposed to be doing while the child is still in utero? On another note, so what if he wasn’t there for the birth. It isn’t ideal for the future telling of the story to the kid, but lot’s of Dads aren’t(for whatever reason). Besides he was working on his play, which, he’s going to need to make a whole lot more of if he’s going to meet the demands of this wretched gold digger for the next 18 years.

    • Abbs says:

She totally did this on purpose. It was even in an article where she bragged to friends that she was going to get knocked up by some rich celebrity so that she wouldn’t have to work any more at Hooters.

  38. j. ferber says:

Yes, Lantana, Jude always does look guilty of something. I’ve seen the pic of him and his infamous, shameless penis, and the,um, modesty of his equipment was underwhelming. Perhaps his sluttiness is compensation for his humble appendage? Dude isn’t aging well, either.

  39. 4Real says:

    Just another pseudo-straight actor.
