Lizzo: If you see me, stay six feet away, this sh-t is coming back

Lizzo posted a PSA to Instagram on Wednesday, before the CDC recommended masks again, saying that she’s going to be “slightly rude” to people and that they shouldn’t take it personally. She said whether someone is vaccinated or not they still have to stay six feet away from her. I think she’s mainly referring to fans and new people , because she explained that people are running up to her and that she’s not being a rude celebrity by backing away. She said she has to stay safe and healthy for her friends, family and the team she works with. We’ve seen how much more transmissible and deadly the Delta variant is, particularly to younger unvaccinated people. There are breakthrough infections which can still be serious too. Lizzo helped me feel so much better about my hesitancy around other people and I wanted to talk about it. Here’s some of what she said and the video is below.

I don’t care who you are. You could be the nicest person. You could be vaccinated. You could be quadruple vaccinated. If you see me, please give me six feet. This sh-t is coming back. COVID. And people being real sloppy with personal space.

I’m nice, but this virus has me acting up. I’m going to be mean.

I love y’all and I want y’all to be the same way. Protect yourselves. Y’all taking your vitamin D and your vitamin C? Wear your masks.

I love ya’ll we can have a whole moment from six feet away.

[Sings] I do not want y’all in my personal space. I ain’t trying to catch no covid today. You get Lysol if you up in my face. Give me distance bitch get out of my face, back back.

I’m kidding but I’m not kidding. Please be safe. I know we’re outside and people are back but it’s spreading and we don’t know details about this. We don’t know if vaccinated people are giving it to vaccinated people but vaccinated people are getting it.

I’m not being rude I’m trying to protect my mother, I’m trying to protect my team. It’s not you, it’s me. Until this is cleared up and we know WTF this variant is and we know who and what it affects, stay safe y’all.

[From Instagram via People]

I honestly felt so empowered watching this and she cracked me up too. I went hiking with a group on Sunday. When we were carpooling over to the trail I was the only one who asked vaccination status before getting in a car with people. By doing this I was also singled out as the only person who felt “uncomfortable” with unvaccinated people. I DGAF when any one of those people could have made me seriously ill. Everyone was vaccinated except a younger woman who said she would wear a mask no problem and an older woman who said she wasn’t vaccinated, wasn’t going to wear a mask and who later said something about “toxins.” Neither rode with me and I completely avoided that one bitch. I didn’t have to work at it much because she was the slowest person and gave up early. On Friday I was supposed to go to an outdoor potluck but I just RSVPed no because I don’t know everyone’s status. As Lizzo says “I’m nice, but this virus has me acting up.” These people can GTFO with their bullsh-t Facebook reasoning for not getting vaccinated. I’m not getting into it with them, just stay the hell away from me. Maybe they’re not going to kill me, but they can still make me sick. Plus as Lizzo said vaccinated people can still get it, even if we’re much less likely to.

Here’s that video. The part where she sings is at 4 minutes in. She should make this the refrain to a song! I love it.

THANK YOU, LIZZO! Covid isn’t a joke, Delta can get you sick even if you’re vaccinated, and infection rates are increasing. Wear a mask and make good choices

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I put away the blue 4 ply surgical masks and brought back out the KN95s I still have left over from BV (before vaccination). I’ll be wearing those again when I’m out from here on out. Not as comfortable, but I think it’s a little “stronger” and fits better around my cheeks (no side gaps, like the blue ones have).

      • BritDebbie says:

@Jan90067. Yep the N95s are definitely the way to go. They did a study with NHS staff on wards and the N95 compared to the surgical masks significantly reduced/removed covid infections (likely delta because that has been our variant for ages now). You can do a quick test on sealablity by standing in front of a mirror and doing a quick large inhale. The mask should pull in against your face.

If you want to be super nice and your mask has a valve, put the blue mask over the top to protect others. But I’m sure you already know and are on top the these things, but working as a volunteer at a charity shop it ‘s amazing how many customer didn’t realise the valve released unfiltered air.

Fabric and surgical blue masks mostly protect others from you. The N95s protect you from others. I’m also going down the N95 route when entering any enclosed space with uncaring people (non mask wearers), with a fabric cover as mine has a valve.

      • Giddy says:

@BritDebbie, Thank You! I have just bought my first true N95 masks because they are finally available. Mine have valves and I now I know to wear a fabric mask over them. It was certainly never my intention to release unfiltered air, so I truly thank you for this information.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

        Thanks, BritDebbie 😊

When this all started in January 2019, I *did* buy masks with “filtered” valves. This was before we knew how worthless they really are for this. I tossed them pretty quickly when I found out. By the end of March 2019, I had already sourced the KN95s (because you couldn’t find an N95 for any amount, and those were needed for FLWs and hospitals). I bought a big stock of them (along with face shields, which I don’t think we’ll need again, for now at least, I hope!), and when I got low, reordered another big stock for all the family to use. When I’m down to my last 2 doz. I’ll reorder again. I feel this is going to be here until well into the beginning of next year at the very least.

I am 100% with Lizzo. I’ve managed to evade covid so far and I’m not about to take any chances.

  3. BrainFog says:

I love this. Just got my 2nd shot (finally! hooray!) and I am barking at people left and right who don’t care about my personal space. I’d rather be rude than long-term ill.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Congrats, Brain Fog!!! That combination of euphoria and mental “peace” at knowing you’re fully vaxxed will stay with you, and even give you a “burst” again when the 2 wk “wait” for it to be fully effective hits you 😊 When I got my shots, I burst into tears at the first one, from relief, gratitude, stress-release… after the 2nd, again, teary from gratitude and knowing that in 2 wks, I’d be safe-ER from this deadly disease, and that my family was safer as well (then I slept for 3 days, with some aches and a bit brain fog, 4th day, I woke up fine).

I’m with Lizzo: I still want that space! I won’t go into crowded places, I won’t go around unmasked people. NO PLACE is that important for me to be.

Here in LA we’re back under mask mandates for indoors; still not seeing that many doing it though; I wish the mandate had some teeth to it: REAL consequences like fines, and yes, even jail. I don’t want to get sick, even “mildly”, or pass it on to the people I care about (and even those I pass: Drs say that even just passing by someone exhaling Delta gets in your nasal cavities and builds up. Just a second or two is enough to build on). NO THANKS! This is a public health CRISIS, and it’s time that the ENTIRE COUNTRY was MADE to treat it as such.

  4. Snuffles says:

I just woke up from a nightmare where a COVID positive woman was determined to breathe all over everyone and moved like one of those zombies in Train to Busan.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I keep having nightmares that are similar to the “I was naked in public” kind, but instead it’s “I’m in a group of people and all of a sudden I realize I don’t have a mask”. It gives me a feeling of panic and vulnerability. I keep having them every couple weeks.

  5. Kristen says:

I actually hate going to the grocery store more now than last year because people (mostly dudes) feel like they’re entitled to be as close to you as possible again. Like, please continue to stay out of my space, thank you.

  6. Mel says:

I had a reunion with some dear friends a few weeks ago. I knew not all of them were vaccinated but didn’t know how to broach the topic. I delegated to another friend of ours who’s much older and is like a patriach people listen to and he took care of it, very diplomatically asking the non-vaccinated to take a test but also reminding that it’s still not like before and to take precautions. We were outside pretty much the whole time but I kept my distance from my mom for a few days after, just to be on the safe side.

  7. Darla says:

I watched that whole video. She’s such a pleasure. I love her.

  8. Merricat says:

If you CHOOSE to NOT be vaccinated, you are the reason we’re at Delta. Selfish, stupid.

    • Miranda says:

At the wedding where I ended up catching it, I had to explain to several people why it’s called the Delta variant. I’m not sure if they previously thought it was called that because it originated in a geographical delta, or if it was first detected in Delta Burke, but apparently the Greek alphabet it too confusing for some people. They should probably call the inevitable next “variant of concern” something like, I don’t know, COVID-19 Part 5: Contagiousier and Deadlier.

  9. Miranda says:

As I shared the other day, I’m battling Delta, and my fiance tested positive yesterday, despite both of us doing everything right. We caught it after attending his cousin’s wedding in Alabama, and given the location, I’m sure you can guess how many other guests were following those guidelines. Thankfully, our symptoms are relatively minor, but we found out last night that the bride’s unvaccinated brother, who’s about 25, has been hospitalized with it. I can’t imagine how many other guests probably have it and are too stupid and/or selfish to get tested and protect others. Come on, people. Don’t be assholes. Actually, I know you guys here aren’t the sort who really NEED to hear that, so how about this: Don’t be afraid to be an asshole to the assholes who are endangering us all!

    • Beenie says:

Aw man, I hope you two get better very soon.

    • Darla says:

I’m sorry Miranda and hope you are still having minor symptoms as you mentioned the other day. 25? Geez. So many younger people are getting so sick with Delta. It’s so upsetting.

    • Becks1 says:

I’m sorry to hear that Miranda, I hope you get better soon!

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

All good thoughts and healing wishes out to you and your financé, Miranda. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, after the last 5 yrs., but I AM still astounded but the utter stupidity and selfish arrogance of “some” people. Esp. in light of what we know about a DEADLY DISEASE! My God, it’s like living in Medieval times again in this respect!

ETA: I know this is horribly wrong of me, but I have to say, just watching some of these idiots, like the woman who said the vax made her “magnetic” and tried to get a key to stick to her neck (it kept falling off, of course!!) …😄 And she was told that it was just hot in the room and she was sticky lolol

      • Darla says:

Especially since she probably rarely bathes!

I remember that story, it was hilarious. What a dope!

    • Anna says:

I’m so sorry to hear you’re battling this! That’s awful and I hope for a speedy and full recovery for you and your fiancé. I guess one question I have is: why did you go? Knowing the situation in Alabama and that so many would not be vaccinated or masking. I guess we can’t avoid things forever but I’m honestly curious because I see friends of mine who are also very safe usually now taking some chances that are surprising. We can all catch it at any time but some situations are more contagious than others. I’m losing steam with holding out and staying away from everything. It affects the mental health a lot and it’s hard to be sequestered when so many people we love are out there acting like it’s over. Sigh.

      • Miranda says:

That’s a totally fair question. When we accepted the invitation, my fiance’s cousin told us that they planned on only allowing vaccinated guests. We had a feeling that a few might slip through the cracks, but his friends and family are mostly the good sort of Southerners, not a bunch of backwards MAGAts. We have to admit that we underestimated the virus, and naively thought that if we kept wearing masks and avoided going out in public too much while we were down there, we would be OK. But I think that the couple unfortunately got overwhelmed with all the other wedding planning and just gave up on checking for proof of vaccination, and all the anti-vaxx disinformation out there is powerful enough to affect even normally reasonable people. I’ll also admit that it was also a moment of weakness, we were just bored with staying at home. Just a very poor decision all-around our part, and we’re paying for it.

    Florida healthcare worker here 🙋‍♀️

My hospital went from 5 Covid patients (and none in the ICU) to over 100 Covid pts in less than three weeks. It’s scary out here and people need to take it seriously.

The good news! The hospital tested about 180 Covid positive patients during those weeks. Only 17 were vaccinated. Get vaccinated friends. It works.

    • Jayna says:

What state are you in? Were any of the vaccinated patients who were Covid positive admitted to the hospital?

      • Merricat says:

Did you not read her comment?

      • Jayna says:

@Merricat, after I posted what state, I realized she said she was a Florida healthcare worker. Rushing to get ready for work and my speedreading isn’t up to par. LOL

  11. Roo says:

Just found out some friends who are fully vaccinated have gotten Covid. I’m sure it’s the Delta variant. Luckily, it’s a mild case for them. Be careful out there and please get vaccinated if it’s medically safe for you to do so!

  12. Becks1 says:

I’m hearing from more people who are fully vaccinated and are still getting sick, and unfortunately that is having the opposite effect for others who aren’t vaccinated from what I’m seeing. Meaning, one friend of mine posted on FB that she and her H have covid, despite being fully vaccinated, and there is one person all over her comments insisting that everyone she knows who is still getting COVID is vaccinated so therefore the vaccines don’t work so therefore what’s the point? My friend works in vaccine research lol so her responses were very measured and intelligent and detailed, but I’m sure she was so frustrated.

We always knew the vaccines weren’t 100% and that they were going to be less effective against a variant. They’re still better than not being vaccinated. I’m getting all my masks out again. I remember saying to my 6 year old in June that I didn’t think he was going to have to wear masks in school this coming year and he said “okay.” then he said to me, “all I’m going to say mommy is okay, because I don’t want to get excited for no masks and then we still need to wear them, so just okay.” Looks like he was right to not get too excited.

    • Darla says:

Oh that’s a cute story about your son. My 6 yo nephew and 5 you niece are going to be very unhappy. I feel so bad for the little kids. But the most important thing is keeping them alive and healthy of course.

      I can’t stand these idiots.

    • cassandra says:

It drives me insane that this is the takeaway despite the fact that the vast majority of infected are unvaccinated. I swear it’s sheer stubbornness and a refusal to be ‘wrong’ about being unvaccinated.

  13. Astrid says:

I went to an outdoor funeral service on Saturday and I was surprised how many people were hugging. I get that it’s a funeral but we all know not everyone is vaccinated. I kept trying to stay 6 feet away and only elbow bump if necessary but even that was getting the stink eye.

  14. Izzy says:

Lizzo is a whole mood for me.

  15. KoolaidDrinkergal says:

Honestly she should be careful. She has one of the medical issues that makes you more likely to die from Covid, obesity. So I can’t blame her.

  16. milliemollie says:

I hate that most vaccinated people act like Covid is over. No,it’s not. You can still get it and spread it.
And the vulnerable can still die. A nursing home in my area got hit with the Delta mutation and three residents already died.

  17. Chicken Tetrazzini! says:

My county is at 70% vaccinated for TOTAL population and our numbers were insanely good. Now they’re creeping up and a whole army of crossfitters just came to town which doesn’t give me a lot of hope since that group loves a cult and a good conspiracy. I’m not coming for anyone in particular here, but Marjorie Taylor Greene is not an outlier as a crossfitter when it comes to beliefs. I thought we had more time before needing our masks again, but the county is recommending them again and even though it’s 100 degrees out – I’ll be wearing my mask to the store today. At least I had a couple of good, safe-feeling months

    • Grant says:

So true. I also follow a bunch of yogis (I love yoga!) and it’s astounding how averse to the vaccine they are. This one guy (I followed him because he’s hot, SHAME ON ME, I know) literally said that he was NOT going to allow anyone to prick his HEALTHY body and inject mercury… I’m like, you sir, are an idiot. So I promptly unfollowed him, sexy or not! Frankly, him talking like that made him ugly in my book.

  18. Case says:

Honestly, I feel pretty proud of myself for maintaining boundaries after getting vaccinated. I think some of my friends and family thought I was being overly precious by not wanting to eat indoors, go back to seeing theater shows, or attending big family gatherings right away, and it can be really hard socially to tell people no. But I feel totally justified now. In my neck of the woods, the only truly good month we had was June, and then cases started ticking up again.

  19. Nev says:

    Bahahahahhqjajajqjqjjajajqjqjqjwj
    I love it.

  20. Freddy says:

I’m with Lizzo…a dear friend is fully vaccinated and got Covid 3 weeks ago, and recovered…but he works as a bartender and DJ and recently got it again–this time, he’s in ICU and not expected to make it. Everyone. Please wear a mask and get vaccinated. It’s that simple. The friggin’ vaccine is FREE for f**k-sake.

  21. Dail says:

I understand her fear, but wonder why she is not losing weight as well. That would really reduce the risk of serious illness

    • Darla says:

She is losing weight and has also been criticized for that. So don’t worry she’s criticized either way she goes, you can take 15 minutes for a coffee break, lotta people on it.

  22. tealily says:

We have a major outbreak in my city right now. I know a couple of vaccinated people who have it, and anecdotally a friend who says she knows 10 vaccinated people who have it (all caught it at the same event. I was there too, but was thankfully spared!) and other who said it’s been making the rounds through her (vaccinated) office. I went out a few times last week after it started spreading and wore my mask. Each time, I and the people I was with were the only ones. I know it doesn’t do much for me, but I guess we need to get back to normalizing masking. I certainly won’t be going out again for while. Way too sketch out there right now.

  23. jferber says:

She’s right. And may I say the crazy long nails are very intriguing to me, but I don’t know how people can wear them? Like, how do you do stuff with your hands? How?

  24. Anna says:

Love her and agree with everything! I reposted because yes. Stay the f away. If it takes til next year, two years, I don’t care. It’s hard but getting really sick and dying really sucks.
