Prince William typed with one finger on a typewriter to promote Earthshot

Emergency Services Day

This morning, Prince William announced the fifteen finalists for the Earthshot Prize, which is William’s big, shiny project where he’s keen about the environment and he’ll hand out money to people/groups who figure out some big way to help/save the environment. The five winners won’t be announced until October 17, and William will announce those too. You can see the Earthshot announcement here. I watched the announcement live on YouTube along with literally… hundreds of people. From my own examination, the number of people watching didn’t top 800 during the YouTube livestream. Ouch. This is supposed to be William’s big, global keenery where he shows the world that people are interested in his stuff too!

In addition to today’s announcement, Kensington Palace is also pushing the Earthshot book, for which William “wrote” the foreword. Here’s part of People Magazine’s write-up:

According to Jason Knauf, chief executive of the Royal Foundation, “The challenge the Duke set himself was, ‘What is the maximum positive personal contribution I can make in the next 10 years in the fight against climate change? What am I going to do in the next decade that means I can look my children in the eye and say that I did my bit? Every aspect of the Prize bears the stamp of his contribution.”

In the foreword he wrote for Earthshot: How to Save Our Planet, the 39-year-old prince goes into more detail about his mindset and motivations for the ambitious project.

“I have seen people all over the world face what seem like insurmountable challenges yet come together with collective ambition, and a can-do-spirit, to find solutions to them,” he writes. “I strongly believe that change is possible, when you put your mind to it. I started thinking about what to do to change the equation to something else: urgency + optimism = action,” William writes.

The Earthshot book highlights what the Royal Foundation says is “the urgency of the environmental challenges facing our world,” as well as helping readers find optimism in the case studies of the “incredible solutions happening globally to repair our planet and … ways we can all make a difference.”

[From People]

I bet the Earthshot book will sell hundreds of copies! Oh well. As far as Kensington Palace’s hyper-managed busywork goes for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, I do think Earthshot seems to be a bit more substantive than, say, Kate’s Keenwell Institute for Early Years and Buttons, which was nothing more than a big, splashy keen announcement and Kate posing for photos. At least with Earthshot, some money might actually go to people who are actually doing good work on the ground. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there’s shady sh-t happening too. But maybe some money will go to the right people.

You can tell that William is super-keen to sell this book because look, he did a completely stupid video about it. William is too much of an elegant, manly man of action to learn how to type… or use a computer. They really thought that they were doing something by putting William in front of a typewriter and having him poke at it with one finger. Seriously, everyone at Kensington Palace needs to be fired. These videos are offensive.

That’s how my step-dad typed on a computer and he had an office job 40 hours a week. It always cracked me up because I wondered why in the hell he did it like that. He just said ‘that’s how I prefer it’ LOL

    • MMadison says:

LOL. At least he used a computer. William typing on a typewriter is bat sh*t crazy!

      • Erica says:

I don’t understand the significance of the typewriter but I do love me some old antique typewriters.

      • notasugarhere says:

It is another example of how William doesn’t actually work, he’s simply a mannequin being posed to look like Office Ken. See the PR pics of him ‘working’ in his ‘home office’. Given the set up of printer location, cords, how things were turned around? That was thrown together in a hour for the pictures but is not a working office.

      • MMadison says:

@Erica: Yes, for decoration purposes only. I would love to have that typewriter as a focal point on my bookshelf.

      • Lorelei says:

This typewriter bit is so reminiscent of that inane video of a piece of paper sliding out of a Xerox machine to promote…something of Kate’s. Clearly the video was not too effective because I cannot remember what it was about; probably because we were all laughing too hard at it.

I’ll need to come back and properly comment later because right now I’m laughing too hard at Kaiser’s “I watched the announcement live on YouTube along with literally… hundreds of people.” 😭

ETA: @MMadison, same— I’ve read that Tom Hanks collects antique typewriters and while I’m sure I don’t have quite as much space as he does, I would love to have one just as a decoration.
Elegant Bill using one unironically, to “work,” is hilarious.

      • Ginger says:

800 people watched that live stream on their YouTube channel ?! LOL. Don’t they have 12 million Instagram followers? This is so embarrassing…

      • MMadison says:

The interest or lack of interest in this initiative by William had to be a massive blow to his ego. Given his legendary temper tantrums I pity KP staff today.

      • Tessa says:

Is he using Philip’s typewriter to pay tribute. william looks very tense in these photos.

      • Debbie says:

Nothing says advancement and modernity like a Corona typewriter.

    • Erica says:

@MMadison-Me too! They are so pretty.

  2. Noki says:

What is using a typewriter suppose to symbolise, that he is traditional? Someone please explain!

    • Snuffles says:

Some PR lackey probably told him it would look stylish.

      • LaraW” says:

UK English vs US English question: the US standard spelling is “arrival.” Does the UK spell it “arrivel” as William does?

“The sight that greets you on arrivel”

ETA Nvm, I zoomed in and it looks like it is indeed an “a.” Although the other thing that occurred to me is that with no other words shown, the sentence reads:

“The sight that greets you on arrival: Prince William.”

      • Eurydice says:

@LaraW – That sentence had me screaming (seriously, I’m making so much noise this morning). I know I keep bringing up Blackadder, but someone on William’s team must have very subversive sense of humor – I’ll bet they steal his socks, too.

      • MMadison says:

@Eurydice: “I bet they steal his socks, too”……I can’t stop laughing!

    • Anners says:

Wondering if he was also trying to show that he wasn’t wasting electricity? Or it’s just retro hipster nonsense. Hard to tell with this guy – his messaging is always mixed.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Noki: the typewriter is more environmentally friendly? That’s all I can come up with. It’s not because it’s difficult to get rid of an old typewriter.

      • Rosa D says:

But then you have to use lots of paper with a manual typewriter, which isn’t really environmentally friendly. Unless, I guess you’re using recycled paper.

      • BeanieBean says:

Rosa D: not to mention correction fluid, typewriter erasers, typewriter ribbons, and carbon paper, if you want copies. And with this, he can look his kids in the eye? They won’t be able to meet his, they’ll be laughing too hard.

      • LMR says:

Ah yes, we used to call it White Out. Now there’s a name Wills can get behind!

    • Belli says:

I think you’re right. It’s a nostalgia call back for their nationalist fans.

      • Amy Too says:

What about a typewriter says “innovative climate solutions for 2021 and the future”? Are the people who will be charmed by how old fashioned and retro he is for barely being able to master the crazy newfangled technology of a typewriter in 2021 the same people who will be interested in innovative and inventive solutions and technology that will force people to live in new and different ways to address climate change? Are the people who want to see the latest in modern climate saving tech the same type of people who will enjoy seeing a 40 year old man living in the information technology age who wears a suit in his own home and doesn’t own a computer or know how to type? Who is the audience for this?

    • Erica says:

He is channeling Tom Hanks? And since everyone loves Tom Hanks he thinks it’ll work?

      • Lorelei says:

@Erica I just mentioned Tom Hanks too, before I even saw your comment! Tom would probably laugh if he saw William actually typing on one, for “work.” He treats them (rightfully so!) as collectors’ items; relics from the past.

        @Amy Too: 👏👏👏

@Anners and @Belli, you’re right, and the Camb stans are probably eating it right up.

    • AmB says:

It’s “branding” for his “image” and the agency who produced it hopes to win awards and (by definition, because you are not A Creative Marketing Genius) you don’t get it.

    • Lionel says:

I think it’s supposed to position him as a medieval princely scholar/patron, who so generously allows his peasants to flourish whilst basking in his benevolence:

“I am but a simple Prince, who yet cares deeply. I live in a draughty castle with naught more than a typewriter and a wax seal. I cannot know of such newfangled things as you do, my subjects, as I am consumed by the cares of the world. I am told by my court magician that the sun grows stronger, and that I will need your knowledge of the crop seasons and the word processors so that I may weaken its fire. I will richly reward the peasant who can solve the mighty equation I have devised. Go forth and experiment, then bring your learnings to me so that I may contain the sun!
      Love, Prince William.
PS — Um yeah, BTW, expect no further work from me on this matter, I am but a simple Prince consumed by the cares of the world. TTYL.”

    • Lady D says:

I thought it as a reminder that this family still exists in the 1970’s.

  3. PrincessPossum says:

Who keeps telling the Keens to make these half-assed ASMR vids? First the bizarre Easter one and now this, I’m sure I’ve missed others.

    • Jais says:

The KP staff is known for not doing too much work, or at least that was my interpretation after hearing how often will and Kate meet with their staff. I wonder if it’s because the people at the top do not know how to manage. So making videos gives them something to do.

      • Harper says:

I notice that Jason Knauf is still happily plugging away for TOB. I wonder if Knauf will really leave his position at the end of the year, or is Knauf to William what Fawcett is to Charles? Cut off when the publicity gets bad, rehired/retained a few months later when no one is paying attention.

      • BabsORIG says:

@ Harper, I once mused if William and Knauf have something going between them…., you know?😉😉Personally, I think William is a closeted player who plays for both teams 😉. I believe William and his father swing both ways🤷🏽‍♀️

    • Alexandria says:

Their PR and messaging is always all over the place, insincere and superficial. Not impactful to the affected people.

What work do you expect from this team who was hired by two people who don’t know what is actual work? This nonsense.

      • Lorelei says:

@Harper it does feel sort of weird that we’re supposed to gain enthusiasm for this project as it’s being touted by someone we all know is a lame duck, just waiting out his days until it’s time to bounce.

    • Lionel says:

@PrincessPossum: And the ANZAC Day biscuit delivery, shot from the perspective of … the biscuits. 🤣 That one’s my favorite!

      • Lesley says:

As the descendent of an ANZAC I was REALLY impressed with that little video (no, I wasn’t. But I was reminded by my ANZAC forebear said, when asked about WW1 ” The British Army used the ANZACs as cannon fodder”. So not impressed William, not impressed at all)

  4. Bethany Karger says:

What is the point of this?

  5. Chaine says:

What on earth?! Are typewriters more environmentally friendly than computers? Because I can’t think why one would use one nowadays.

    • goofpuff says:

someone who has never used one regularly clearly thinks so, forgetting the toxic ink and waste from the ribbon that comes with it. Not really environmentally sound to use them.

      • Mac says:

It’s far more environmentally friendly to use an antique typewriter than it is to use a computer made of plastics and heavy metals, both of which will degrade over time and end up in our oceans.

      • Becks1 says:

@Mac, yes, but they have computers made of plastics and heavy metals. So like so much of the Cambridges, this feels performative.

At any rate, I don’t think the typewriter was chosen for environmental reasons, I think it was chosen to make William look more like a statesman or something.

      • equality says:

Computer components, including the plastics, can be recycled.

      • notasugarhere says:

This is all performative. People who write, really write, use computers. Typing on an old-school typewriter is not more eco-friendly, given how much paper and toxic ribbon you go through when you make mistakes. But what, snaps for trying Mac?

    • LaraW” says:

Maybe it’s because he was mocked when KP released those photos of William “working,” complete with the unplugged printer and the backwards cabinets. Like a “okay, they didn’t go for the modern technology look. Maybe it will look better if he’s hard at work on a typewriter.”

Or they tried the laptop approach and even the fools at KP PR saw that William pecking away on a laptop with an empty word doc was farcical. Like, you can’t get away with writing less than ten words and then suddenly skip to the bottom of a blank page to sign “Prince William.”

    • equality says:

I don’t see how it would be more environmentally friendly to use a typewriter. If they had shown a computer screen it wouldn’t have been necessary to waste a whole piece of paper for one sentence.

  6. Sofia says:

Why is he using a typewriter? He’s 39, not 69. No one is going to be surprised if he uses a MacBook (for example) to type. In fact, it would probably be expected.

As for Earthshot, I agree that it seems more substantive than Kate’s Early Years (still don’t understand what the main goal is there…) but I think that the solutions to climate change is already there, we just need corporations and governments to act and implement them. So unless the money can help these solutions be implements, finding the solutions again just seems a bit like reinventing the wheel in the climate change arena.

    • Sandra says:

Hey, now! Even us old farts in our 60s don’t use typewriters! Lol. Haven’t seen or touched one since high school typing class….

      • Sofia says:

Oh I wasn’t trying to offend anyone! I just meant that William is a millennial and wouldn’t really need to use a typewriter.

      • Layla says:

They’re trying to portray William as some sort of successful author. He writes one line (supposedly) out of the “foreword” (most definitely written by someone else) to try to “build suspense” to the book (like most Successful authors do) by writing one line but
all this video does is show Elegant and his offices’ desperation.
“For the love of God, someone please LOok aT MeeEeEEeeEeEeE I’m wRiTiNg sOmEtHinG. I’m a wRitEr tOo!!”

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I took typing in HS. We learned on old manuals, not even electric ones! We were told we MUST learn how to type as college professors would NOT accept handwritten papers. Unfortunately, I got viral pneumonia that year, and I missed on learning how to type out the numbers w/out looking; I STILL can’t type numbers w/out going one-fingered and looking! lol

My nephews (23/21) ONLY type/text. Their fingers fly like the wind. Their HANDWRITING on the other hand, looks like a 1st grader, chicken scratching printing! As a (former) 3rd gr. teacher, who taught cursive, this makes me insane! lol.

And don’t get me started on the one space after periods. I will DIE on the hill of double spacing at the end of a sentence!!

      • iconoclast59 says:

@Sandra LOL. I’m 62, and I’m constantly showing my 20-, 30-, and 40-something co-workers how to use formulas in Excel, how to format Word documents, how to create a Visio chart, how to add special effects to PowerPoint presentations… you get the picture. We aren’t all technophobic dinosaurs!

      • BeanieBean says:

(TheOG) Jan90067: Oh, that’s me too, with respect to the two spaces after a period. I took typing twice, once in junior high on manuals & again in high school on electric typewriters, strictly because I knew I was going to college & would be writing term papers. Fast forward a decade or so, and there I am in grad school at Cambridge University, where they accepted hand-written essays. Gotta say, that floored me. At least the masters thesis had to be computer-produced!

    • Eurydice says:

I think you mean 169. Not just a typewriter, but an ancient manual typewriter. The kind that you have to make corrections with liquid white-out or just rip out the paper and start typing all over again. The kind where you have to use carbon paper to make copies. It’s like they found it in a KP basement storage room with a lot of leftover furniture from WWII – that ratty green table looks like it was used by wartime cryptographers.

I don’t know whether to scream or weep – all the fuss about airbrushed magazine covers and the Keens counter with this?

      • MMadison says:

I remember using a typewriter but it had automatic return and a sleek keyboard. All the fuss yesterday is even more ridiculous with this, Phillip’s will and Andrew hiding out from being serve. Yet, Harry was airbrushed.

      • SenseOfTheAbsurd says:

Wouldn’t be much more anachronistic and absurd if they’d shown him posing thoughtfully whilst writing on parchment with a feather quill.

    • Becks1 says:

And they HAVE computers! We see their macbooks out during their zooms! Use that!

      • Becks1 says:

I will say that I learned to type on a typewriter in 9th grade (I knew how to type before that, but we had an actual typing class we were required to take, small Catholic girls school, there was such a throwback “we’re going to be secretaries” feel to it, but shortly after it they upgraded to “keyboarding” on the computer along with learning how to use Word etc.) Anyway so as a result I am a very heavy typer and am very loud, because 25 years later I still type like I’m trying to hit those keys on the old typewriters.

AAA space AAA space AAA space SSS space SSS space…..

      • Seraphina says:

Becks, I corrected my son on not double spacing after a period. (Had to read a two page essay and it drove me crazy). He said it’s not a requirement. I googled it and I stumbled upon an article: If you double space after a period you are over 40!
Took the wind right out of my sail. I learned about spacing in 9th grade typewriting as well.

      • notasugarhere says:

Fellow heavy typer here. Did you also have typing in the dark tests to prove you weren’t looking at the keys? We had those.

      • Amy Too says:

We had to type with a laminated piece of green paper over the keyboard. It was taped to the top of the keyboard and you shoved your hands under it to type.

      • Eurydice says:

I refused to learn how to type, which, according to the guidance counselor, would make me unemployable for life. I told him I’d get a job where others would do my typing and that’s what I did. The men in my office assumed that all women were born knowing how to type, but I would just put up my hands and shrug my shoulders.

      • Nic919 says:

I also took typing with a real typewriter and the next year they switched to computers. I recall the liquid paper key had been disabled so that they could test us for accuracy. Even then it wasn’t a manual typewriter. I was sort of average as a typist and my years of piano lessons didn’t help that much.

I just don’t understand how a millennial could be that bad at typing when I imagine that he would have had to type out his essays by the time he was in uni. I mean of course he probably didn’t do any of his course work, but that type of one finger typing is only something I have seen from older boomers who had secretaries who did all that kind of work for them.

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

        Amy too
I had construction paper taped to my board with some keys cut out. No shoving fingers under!

I could have sworn Harry spoke of typing when addressing his dyslexia. I might be misremembering.

      • iconoclast59 says:

@Nic919, you raise an interesting point: Why didn’t William learn to type in school? It certainly looks like others typed up his work for him, which leads to this question: Did he even do the work? Judging by his present day work-shy behavior, I’m going to say NO. As someone who wasn’t able to get a 4-year degree because she couldn’t afford it, it really chaps my hide to see someone handed a top-tier education on a silver platter and not appreciate it.

      • Nic919 says:

I am a bit older than William and I was certainly typing on the computer all my major essays in high school and it was just expected by the time I was in undergrad. No one did handwritten papers. You only wrote your exams.

I mention this because I had a discussion with a more senior partner who told me he paid someone to type out his essays for him when he was in university and law school because typing long essays with footnotes required some skill. By the time the word processor came around, that was something anyone could figure out, as long as you confirmed if the style was MLA, APA or Chicago. Or I guess if you were a rich kid who could pay someone to do the work for you.

      • Lady D says:

I worked as a reporter for a local paper, and we were taught to put one space after a period. In a newspaper, space is money. My paper (small) was worth $11.75 per square inch of print, the much larger paper the next town over charged $16.90 per inch. This is why only one space after a period. Saves a lot of otherwise wasted, valuable space.

    • Mac says:

@Sofia The purpose of the Earthshot Prize is to allow small, but effective, environmental solutions scale up so they can attract funding from investors and governments. This is a well established approach to philanthropy.

      • Sofia says:

If this actually happens (as in corporations and governments use these solutions and actually implement them as well as establish policies) then I will give him and Earthshot credit.

      • notasugarhere says:

The purpose of the Earthshot (stolen name prize) is to make it look like William cares about something, anything. But his frequent helo trips and jaunts on the private jet, plus his three children aren’t negated by this performance art.

    • Desdemona says:

My grandfather, who’s 95 uses a computer to write his poems… Of course, from time to time he messes with it and we have to fix it (doesn’t print, blocked, whatever)…

I think the use of the typewriter has to do with being more ecofriendly,

    • Lorelei says:

I’m finding it so funny is that once again, KP’s sad little tactics fail immediately; in their attempt to be…quirky? with the typewriter stunt, all we’re discussing is the typewriter stunt, not whatever the actual project is.

@Sofia: I’m with you, and I suggest we don’t hold our breath waiting for this to happen

  7. Merricat says:

Are we supposed to be charmed by his inability to do the simplest of tasks? Is he “bringing the monarchy into modernity” by pecking at a typewriter, which hasn’t been used by us regular modern folk in years (except by a few old poets)?
I wish I could see urgency and optimism in William extend to those beyond himself.

    • Meghan says:

I used a typewriter in 2013 when my hotel switched flags and I had to type the room numbers on the little paper covers they put over the buttons on the phone pad. I would have been 26 at the time and SO many people were astonished that I knew what a typewriter was and how to use it.

It wasn’t even a super old time-y one, it was pretty new. I didn’t listen to the video with sound on but I imagine they were going for the noise a typewriter makes? Because we know they have at least one laptop from their busy days of Zooming last year.

      • Merricat says:

I have a typewriter that is nearly 100 years old, I love them, actually. If they were going for the sound, a single-finger style doesn’t provide much, lol.

    • HeyJude says:

What’s funny is they constantly imply through leaks Harry is “the stupid one”, but this fool can’t even type in 2021.

      • SS says:

I’m a two finger typist too. Lots of people are and it doesn’t make us stupid. It didn’t stop me from getting a MA from an Ivy League school. It not necessary to read so much into small things.

  8. Harper says:

Oh, that video was a good laugh! Even better than the hastily assembled printer with visible cords/end table set decoration from their previous efforts.

So William is realizing that in ten years he’ll be 50 and he needs SOMETHING to show George as an example of what to do with one’s time when one is rich, royal, and a complete sloth. It is not easy for one to be poking his head above the parapets wondering how to cope with a whole nation expecting something from you.

    • Eurydice says:

Even the legacy thing isn’t clear, because Will doesn’t ask “what is a positive thing I can do?”, which points to the Earthshot project. He quantifies it with “what is the maximum positive personal contribution I can make?” The answer to that question seems to be “not a whole hell of a lot.”

      • Harper says:

Good point. It seems like engineering fame and naming a “winner” is more in line with Will’s idea of personal contribution, hence the whole focus on creating prestige. Could it be that Will, famous since birth, believes the best contribution he can personally make is bequeathing fame on some environmentalist toiling away in obscurity? Every year a new Greta Thunberg?

      • Lorelei says:

@Eurydice, everything has to be all about him. Everything!

From his statement on Philip’s death to this being all about HIS “legacy.” It’s so incredibly inappropriate and obvious. (I mean, most people do whatever they do in order to create some sort of legacy; what they do NOT do is flat-out tell everyone that’s the reason!! This isn’t rocket science, yet KP still manages to fck it up.)

William truly is dumber than a bag of hair, we’re just seeing it more now since Harry isn’t there to play “the dim one” next to Elegant Bill anymore.

Since they love doing their little polls every week, I’d like to see one with the results of how many people in the UK are even aware that this exists, compared to, for example, the Invictus Games.

  9. Amy Bee says:

I was waiting for Kaiser to write about this video. LOL. I stopped watching when he started one finger typing. That’s just embarrassing and it shows that his staff does all the work for him and he doesn’t use a computer/laptop. He really is a Victorian. It would seem that People got the same press release as the Daily Mail because they both have the same Jason Knauf comments. This project can only be successful if governments get involved and I’m not seeing William making any pleas to political leaders to support these winners.

    • Kalana says:

William’s “bit” was getting other people to throw money at the problem while not changing anything about his behavior and not asking any of his wealthy friends to make any changes. William just wants other people to keep his favorite vacation spots pristine while he takes helicopters everywhere.

      • Chrissy (The Original) says:

Yup. He really wants to have something big attached to his name whether or not it’s doable or not.. Also, like you said, these big plans are for other people to implement, not him or his aristocratic friends who would never consider getting rid of their private jets, private helicopter (gift from Grannie) or their multiple enormous homes (with nary a solar panel in sight). William is nothing but a hypocritical know-it-all and the ultimate slacker with an undeserved platform and too many yes men around him. Earthshot is a farce and has no gravitas because he is a joke as a philanthropist.

    • Becks1 says:

It’s so embarrassing – the video, the foreword. I don’t know about Earthshot itself, I guess time will tell with that one.

But even this – “I strongly believe that change is possible, when you put your mind to it. I started thinking about what to do to change the equation to something else: urgency + optimism = action.”

Something about it is just so…..tone deaf…to me. Like he’s the only one who has ever thought that we need ACTION When it comes to climate change, not just urgency.

      • notasugarhere says:

And how does that personal climate ACTION relate to taking a personal jet to France for his brother in law’s wedding last weekend, eh?

      • Becks1 says:

@Nota – right??? That’s the big thing that stands out to me whenever William talks about the environment. How are those private jets treating you? How are those helicopters treating you?

      • Merricat says:

If he were serious, he would talk about his own carbon bootprint, and how he can reduce it. Piker.

      • Lorelei says:

@Becks it IS all embarrassing. Admittedly I’m biased because I actually like Harry, but even if I didn’t have an opinion on the two brothers, I honestly believe I’d still be aware of the Invictus Games and the existence of Sentebale because it’s very obvious that Harry genuinely cares about them and that shines through. He didn’t invent them just so he could check off the “legacy” box after college, marriage, kids, etc.

With William, however, it is so blatantly obvious that he’s only doing this because he needed something, ANYTHING that was *his.* People can tell he lacks any sort of real passion for it, so it ended up being a flop.

      • Lionel says:

@Becks1: LOL yes! It’s the inanity of the “equation” that makes me laugh hardest. Like “Look at ME, I’m a gentleman philosopher AND an existential physicist!” Sure, Will. Sure you are. 😂

      • iconoclast59 says:

@Lorelei, Harry’s also aware of his immense privilege and how easily that can make his words/actions seem hypocritical. He and Meghan have taken great care to, as the saying goes, put their money where their mouth is.

  10. Kalana says:

William is starting to remind me of James Middleton. Especially in the typing video. He never made the transition into being an emotionally mature adult and it shows.

Considering William’s work record, I’m surprised Earthshot wasn’t quietly shelved nd forgotten. He was self-aware enough to outsource most of the work. Seeing as other people were involved, will they get any shine or will William hog all the credit?

    • Duch says:

James Middleton is not an emo mature adult? I remember 10 yrs ago (in his 20s?) he seemed kind of feckless, but he’s added goodness to the world in talking about his mental health. And those beautiful dogs.

Today he seems more emo mature than WIlliam I’d say.

      • corralee says:

It’s f’n weird how people talk about that guy and his dogs. Like having “pretty” dogs makes him a better person or something. Completely bonkers and weird.

      • notasugarhere says:

Because making money on n a z i party supplies brings goodness to the world? His company produced those on demand, twice, even after an employee complained to management about it.

      • Kalana says:

I think he tried to clean up his image and whatever he did at Boomf by working with the Daily Mail. How can you be serious about mental health and then publish your essay in one of the worst tabloids? I think James has big plans and a big ego, and then others have to step in and sort out whatever he did. Like William, I don’t think James would be able to be an independent person.

      • equality says:

I’d be more impressed if he were running a rescue service and not breeding dogs. I question his dog breeding abilities since the dog that W&K had apparently had health issues that lead to early death.

      • OriginalLala says:

He is a dog breeder who also ran (runs?) a sketchy company, can we stop putting him on any kind of pedestal???

      • Duch says:

To everyone – Okay fair he shouldn’t be on a pedestal. And I didn’t know about some of the stuff mentioned below, which must have been in his 20s?

My point only was that he was emo mature today, unlike his brother in law. There’s daylight between the two of them in terms of emo maturity.

But I’ll stand my ground here: those dogs *are* beautiful and he seems like a beloved pack leader. That certainly adds beauty to the world. But I used to have English cockers so maybe I’m partial.

      • notasugarhere says:

Adopt don’t shop. Those dogs are poorly bred for profit, to the point where the strains he and his mummy use seem to have genetic defects that lead to early cancer. So no, still not seeing a ‘beloved pack leader’ or anything admirable in him.

      • iconoclast59 says:

@notasugarhere, I used to be 100% for getting a dog from a shelter over going to a breeder. However, when I look at the shelter dogs on Petfinder these days, I’d say at least 70% of them are pit bulls/American Staffordshire Terriers or PB/AST mixes — the facial features are very recognizable. These breeds can be lovely pets, but they’re not for rookies; they require firm, consistent guidance and a deep understanding of dog behavior. Many people, including myself, prefer a dog breed with a reputation of being easier to handle. Until genetic diversity is restored to the shelter population, that may mean going to a breeder, though I would certainly check with a breed rescue organization first.

      • Tessa says:

James MIddleton IMO is as opportunistic as Carole and Kate and Pippa.

      • notasugarhere says:

Then you keep looking. There is no time crunch, no ‘right’ to have a dog the second the desire occurs to you. It took months to help a friend find a suitable shelter dog, but we were determined to adopt not shop. What is happening now? Many breeds that have the reputation as ‘easier to handle’ are now inbreed so badly they’re genetically unhealthy and dangerous.

    • Lorelei says:

@Kalana, I can see exactly what you mean; they both come across as useless dilettantes, always just flitting from one thing to another, hoping that someday, something will stick.

  11. mariahlee says:

Oh wow, the video is terrible marketing. The lack of charisma is palpable with William, so I guess I understand their efforts to get him doing something besides talking at the camera, but this is bad lol

Anyway, great that some innovative work might get money to do interesting things (albeit not transformational). As always tho, so much “I” in reference to William. He’s always very clear that everything he does is ultimately to benefit himself primarily.

  12. NCWoman says:

I’m not going to say he plagiarized, but someone studied a number of H&M’s forewords, didn’t he?

  13. CarrieVirginia says:

What the holy fk. That video. Stupid is as stupid does.

  14. Scorpion says:

That last photo of him mouth wide open braying like a hippo at that poor member of the public 🤣😁🤭

  15. Chantal says:

Hilarious! Well that explains why it took so long for an update. Do they sign documents using quills? Is using blue ink a no no? Are gel ink pens considered to be too gauche? This is the most regressive monarchy ever! With the most incompetent staff ever! No wonder the modern Montecito Royals are such a threat. Every thing that is modern and/or progressive is an existential threat to the Firm/BRF. Meanwhile the world continues to pass them by while others thrive.

  16. swirlmamad says:

I am CACKLING. Good lord. I got nothing else.

    • Becks1 says:

It’s hilarious and sad at the same time.

This is the super modern, super “with it” prince, future future King……and this is what we get.

  17. LaraW” says:

I’ve always been a bit puzzled by the name “Earthshot.” To me, it literally evokes images of earth being shot… or like shotput, where the earth is hurled away and lands like a lead balloon.

Also, I question the timing of this announcement. Charles faces scrutiny and speculation on the legality of his trusts— but here comes William, announcing the winners who will receive lots of money donated to Earthshot by various enormously wealthy individuals who are not involved (as far as we know) in pay for play schemes.

Seems a bit.. pointed, is all.

    • Gail Hirst says:

To me the Earthshot name was evocative of a picture being taken of Earth from space. The earthshot is the best shot of all….and the ‘leader’ (Wm) is super spacy….(ooo, like Kevin? play on words, sorry)

      • LaraW” says:

Huh, I hadn’t thought of it that way. Only now I am imagining William in space with one of his hunting rifles taking aim at earth… I think I associate William with hunting too much for me to take the word “shot” as anything other than shooting wildlife.

      • iconoclast59 says:

@LaraW, I’m with you. I imagine the earth being shot out of a cannon!

    • LaraW” says:

So I’ve been trying to figure out how this roll out was “supposed” to go before H&M derailed it with their Time magazine cover.

      1. William does “something something do gooder awards.”
      2. Kate goes on her “blazers and trousers for children’s aviation” event (which would have looked good if she actually managed to do her job and stay on topic).
      3. William announces Earthshot semifinalists.
      4. Whatever comes next.

So theoretically it would have looked really good, especially with Charles mired in the shady dealings of his trust. The Cambridges “hit the ground running,” William supposed to have been presented as the real future of the monarchy(??). And I guess restore integrity to an institution now irrevocably damaged by service dodging Andrew.

Then Time magazine dropped its cover and the BM immediately stopped paying attention to William to screech about Meghan.

      • Bren says:

William and Kate should get on with it and be the professional handshakers that they are destined to be. That’s what should come next. Trying to win an imaginary foot race against Harry and Meghan is pointless.

      • ABritGuest says:

Such fickle press friends. If it hadn’t been for this site I would have no idea this was even happening. No front pages for the most prestigious environmental prize ever &no social media buzz. Philip’s will being sealed got more attention. I’m sure the actual awards show will though.

    • notasugarhere says:

      1) He stole the name of an existing environmental prize, which is also called EarthShot and touts itself as the Green Nobel

      2) It may indicate giving the Earth a Chance (aka a shot at survival)

      • LaraW” says:

Got it. I think if the name weren’t associated with William, he of the “oh noes I have to cancel grouse hunting,” it would make sense. But yeah, at this point I automatically think William —> hunting.

    • Becks1 says:

So the name supposedly comes from the idea of “Moonshot” in the 60s, he’s taking that and using it for this meaning “we need to move fast and have big ideas to try to save the planet” the same in the 60s we were hyper focused on getting to the moon.

I think that’s supposed to be the point of it anyway.

    • RoyalBlue says:

he fashioned the name earthshot after moonshot. moonshot was kennedy’s term for the 10 year plan to get us to the moon. so of course jason knauff copied that and decided 10 years to save the earth should be called earthshot.

  18. Jessica says:

The one finger typing cracks me up. You know who types with one finger? The old farts in the office who think they’re the greatest and don’t “like” computers even though they came on the scene more than 30 years ago. The ones that still insist on keeping a fax machine around just so they don’t have to deal with emails. WTF. I don’t know how anyone younger than like, 70, doesn’t know how to type. He went to university right? Presumably he’s had to write papers? Like, has he really never used a keyboard?????

    • Gail Hirst says:

Hey, I have a fax line and I’m younger than 70 (67) LOL. Still I remember Miss Pease teaching me typing in high school. As one of her star pupils, it was one of the very few things I did well in at school…

      • Lady D says:

My childhood sucked so when I learned how to type, I finally had something in my life that I could control. I threw myself into it, and in grade twelve I hit 132 wpm on an electric typewriter. I could also do 80wpm in shorthand, but that skill is long gone, lol. To this day, I still love typing.

    • Alarmjaguar says:

You know he didn’t type (or probably write) his own papers in college!

    • Waitwhat? says:

Eh, not to defend him, but in my office a lot of people of various ages don’t know how to touch type so type with two (or sometimes four) fingers, often pretty fast. I can touch type only because I did old style Secretarial Studies in high school. Not sure what the typewriter is supposed to signify, though.

As others have said, it would be far more meaningful if his “personal contribution” had involved a commitment to reduce his own and his family’s carbon footprint by choosing a more sustainable way to live (and redistributing some of his family’s obscene and stolen wealth, too).

      • notasugarhere says:

A 39 year old with a university degree doesn’t know how to type but you’re defending it? All it shows is that 1) he’s lazy and as written upthread 2) give more credence to the rumours he did none of his own work at school.

      • Kalana says:

You’d think he’d chose to do something else for the video seeing as he can’t type. It’s treating all of this as if it’s a cutesy game that is really off-putting. He’s a grown man who is supposed to be doing his job. In an actual job, William would seem like such an idiot.

  19. Esme says:

You’ll never be able to convince me that the same social media guy that ran the Sussexes page is now running the Keens his page. WTF, this video is so weird and lacks any creativity. It’s just blah, I don’t have any other word to describe it but this is like their third video or so where are the message is confusing and the videos awkward.

    • JT says:

I can believe it. That guy switching over to KP made me realize how much input and ideas came from Meghan about the Sussexes social media strategy. Meg ran a successful blog for years and her Instagram had over 2 million followers, despite being a “cable actress” like some people like to say. She had more followers than the Keens did. The success of SussexRoyal had nothing to do with the guy they hired, as it seems that all he did was listen to what was instructed, because he hasn’t been able to replicate that success with the Cambridges.

      • notasugarhere says:

You cannot make silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Even if he was hugely talented at SM, all he has to work with is W&K.

    • nina says:

Maybe it is the same guy, but with H&M, they were actively involved and he was just implementing their ideas. That is why there is such a contrast. Meghan old website/blog, The Tig, was really good.

  20. TabithaD says:

Wow. His PR team are quite something. Whoever came up with this needs to be sacked. “Modern face of the royals”, indeed. Hopeless. Absolutely hopeless.
And he just wrote the intro to this book? (OK got someone to write the intro for him). That’s the absolute bare minimum. And it’s just a load of jargon.
I still don’t understand the point of Earthshot. It’s just a vehicle to give out “prizes”, isn’t it? Five prizes of £1m each, every year for 10 years. Is £1m a lot of money, in the context of these sorts of projects? Because it doesn’t sound like it to me. Are they expecting results, or is it just glorified PR for those involved? Is it like certain grants, where you get awarded a bit of money to basically shut up and go away, so that the donors can say “look what we’ve done for the environment!” on all their marketing info?

    • equality says:

With it being billed as a prize and not a grant I wonder if the winners could just use the money to buy themselves houses or whatever. I don’t get the point of how it is going to help in that case.

      • Eurydice says:

As I understand it, the prize money goes toward a project agreed upon between the winners and the Earthshot committee.

  21. Chica1971 says:

But we still don’t know who racked up those helicopter rides during Covid? Typewriter is not gonna cut it as saving electricity in comparison

  22. Amy Too says:

For a couple that keeps making the media wrote about how “modern” they are and how they’re bringing the monarchy into the 21st century and appealing to a new generation, all of their personal brand marketing is so regressive. It’s like they’re screaming at us that they are aggressively old fashioned. They want out and sourced a type writer for this video. The heir to the British throne, who went to college in the late 90s/early 2000s doesn’t know how to type and apparently still hasn’t learned, despite being a “working man” in 2021 who supposedly “writes” book forwards.

    • Lorelei says:

@AmyToo, in all fairness, we have to give them points for consistency. The typewriter dovetails well with the gold-foil-stamped, limited edition set of the complete works of Jane Austen (or whatever those books Kate had on her “work desk” were).

      • notasugarhere says:

The set she bought days before on her PR jaunt to the bookshop with the kids as London was shutting down. Like the Dolores Umbridge plates on her walls, the books were purchased as decoration not use.

  23. Over it says:

Everything the keenbridges do leave me underwhelm and unimpressed. So I am off to look at Harry and Meghan time magazine photos because I miss them .

  24. Gina says:

So laughable. Unbeliavably ridiculous video. TOB looks like idiot, sorry. As about typewriter, I saw one in “nostalgia” corner in elderly home. Not in use, just in nostalgia corner. Where his staff found it? Why this idea? Are they making fun of him?
He wants to appeal to modern population not to old royalists with this suspiciously “woke” idea. I assume he wants to be seen modern and in charge. So, why not to use the computer or laptop? Unbeliavably stupid.
And quoting Jason Knauff was bad idea, I think. It just underlines their close connections.

  25. Catherine says:

This project would be a perfectly acceptable/commendable project if they would just stop acting like William is Jesus and is turning water into wine. Unlike his other projects that were so much fluff. This one has real thought and intent behind it and funding environmental initiatives is a great cause because they have trouble getting funding. The problem has been the non stop PR campaign that centers William not environment. The problem is that decided to equate this thing to the Nobel Peace Prize. The continually focus on “style” (what they think might get W the most attention) over substance. That’s why the project isn’t getting the traction they want.

    • notasugarhere says:

It was stolen from some else, both the name and the nickname of Green Nobel. William has no original ideas.

      • nina says:

Ar they trying to say its the green Nobel because like the actual Nobel prize the winner gets $1mil? Because that seems to be the only common denominator between them.
None of their ideas are thought through. Its like lets throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

@notasugarher, Right. The Earthshot name itself has been attached to other groups that have been involved in environmental issues. The Green Nobel nickname comes from the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize that was established in 1989. Have to eyeroll William’s being touted as the “most ambitious and prestigious” before being around for a while.
        https://www.ecowatch.com/green-nobel-prize-recipients-2021-2653406825.html

  26. SarahCS says:

What can you do in the next ten years?
    Stop taking helicopters everywhere.
Have one modest sized home (well insulated, etc.).
    Ditch the private jets too.
Lose all the giant gas guzzling cars.

Give me a shout once you’ve got these sorted and we can talk some more.

  27. Ann says:

I have an old black rotary phone I bought at an antique shop a few years ago. It still works. Perhaps William could use its rotary dial to call the winners, because it too makes pleasant clickity sounds, just like the typewriter.

  28. Seraphina says:

I need a drink because that clip is confusing as hell.

  29. notasugarhere says:

Is it being published on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper with soy ink and eco-friendly glue?

  30. Kelsey says:

Screaming at the title. What a mess.

  31. J ferber says:

The one-finger typing qualifies as an event as well as a high-level technological skill. Bravo, Bill. So glad they kept the higher- functioning brother at home. Keep on killin’ it, bro.

  32. Layla says:

‘What is the maximum positive personal contribution I can make in the next 10 years in the fight against climate change?“
Arent those the exact words they used when interdicting the keenwell centre? Substituting “climate change” for “early years” or whatever

  33. Lizzie says:

Same guy who is touted as the ‘modern face of the monarchy’ is using a 50 year old typewriter with 2 fingers. Did they forget they said that?

  34. equality says:

I see they made sure to have the photo of George and Philip visible in the background.

  35. MangoAngelesque says:

Okay, I confess, I love me a vintage typewriter. Or any typewriter. And my writers/authors enjoy writing with them. But for the nostalgia of it, the creative process, the tactility. And some of us love the aesthetic.

But for day-to-day work? No way. And no man like William has a creative bone in his body, nor is there any love of aesthetic in the entirety of his life. This was affectation, plain and simple. And poorly affected affectation, at that.

  36. notasugarhere says:

I see #PoorJason the liar is still front-and-centre representing William’s interests.

  37. JemimaLeopard says:

I honestly kept expecting the murder she wrote theme tune to be played over this video 😂

  38. lolalola3 says:

oh dear god, he can’t even type! If you combine this “Project” with that last big project Kate was working on…what was it, some kind of young child initiative??…you get absolutely NOTHING. I would be so pissed if my taxes supported these lay-abouts.

  39. taris says:

…i still have no idea what earthshot is…

    • Lorelei says:

      @Taris, neither do I. And I doubt we’re alone.

    • Becks1 says:

So his video announcing the finalists has 91k views on IG. They have 13 million followers. So my guess is that even most of the cambridge followers don’t know what it is.

      • notasugarhere says:

My guess is those views are all from Meghan-haters (aka W&K stans) who are trying to up the numbers by repeatedly clicking on the link. As they repeatedly took Kate’s struggle survey so none of the survey data is valid.

  40. cisne says:

A cosplay of Charles? Except not with clothes but armed with a mechanical typewriter. In his mind that is what it looks like to busy “at work” re his father’s example? I guess the old school machine is a nod to using things that, are not fossil fuel fed? I eh know🤷🏽‍♀️

  41. Silent Star says:

I can *almost* accept the use of the old typewriter as a cute hearkening-back to serious writers from days of yore — however, a) that kind of reference is utterly misplaced as messaging for a cause that is inherently complex and modern, and b) his one-finger typing just emphasizes the fact that this guy hasn’t spent much time doing any actual work ever.

It looks like his mom forced him to start his homework assignment, and he’s just finally sitting down and clumsily typing:

“𝙼𝚢 𝙱𝙸𝙶, 𝙸𝚖𝚙𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝙸𝚍𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚝𝚘 𝚂𝙰𝚅𝙴 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚆𝙾𝚁𝙻𝙳”

    …𝙱𝚢 𝙼𝙴, 𝙿𝚛𝚒𝙽𝚌𝚎 𝚆𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚊𝚖

  42. Jay says:

These comments have me cackling. I think William is trying to emphasize that he’s personally responsible for writing the foreword to the Earthshot book, maybe he even typed it out on his antique typewriter, using just one finger! So authentic. I hope whichever highly rated private school (Eton?) was responsible for his education posts a clarification that their graduates are, in fact, usually familiar with late- 20th century technology.

How come every time they show photos of the Cambridges “working” it’s like an unintentional satire of actual work? Are they getting their promo ideas from unpublished scripts for The Office? My personal favourite remains Kate’s newly-purchased set of “classic” novels sitting all in a row on her empty desk, but William’s unusable, unplugged printer was pretty good, too. I guess if he does all his correspondence on his antique typewriter, that makes sense 😂.

    • Lorelei says:

@Jay that would actually be a very funny show…an “Office”-like satirical look behind the scenes at KP, as they plan all of these inane little stunts in their neverending bid to appear “relevant.” If done well, it could be hysterical!

      • Nivz says:

I think you guys have cracked it. Did anyone watch the shows about the BBC (w1h or something) and the show about the Olympics. A Kensington palace show on those lines would be a winner.

  43. Anne says:

Bless his heart. He and his entire team really cannot get anything right. The video currently has 5,800 views; that’s so sad. Love the “I strongly believe that change is possible, when you put your mind to it” sentiment — encapsulates his version of do-gooding; you don’t actually have to DO anything, you just have to think about it and make little speeches about it and you’re good.

  44. SUNNYVILE says:

I see they’re still continuing with their favoritism of George😐poor Charlotte & Louis might get a complex from this. Why not also display joint pictures of him with all his kids.

WillyWonka is just covering bases before the end of the year. Like everything else he’s ever attached his name to (taking full credit for other people’s hard work) he won’t do more than give random “grants” annually & show up for pr pictures for this project. Greta said it best, what the world needs is REAL action not some new competitive “awards”. This little stunt of his with typewriter shows that he’s only after the hype/pr

    • notasugarhere says:

George is the heir. As the other two will/should not end up being working royals, they shouldn’t continue to use them for PR clicks. The public should have less and less access to the younger two starting now, so they have more chance of private lives when it comes time to shove them out of the royal house at 18.

      • SUNNYVILE says:

Wait what?!! They’re already in public eye & we practically see them frequently for birthdays/Katie’s events,trooping..et events. How is not having their pictures on only this clip is giving them anonymity????🤨also they’re on line of succession & titled (like Harry was) which means they’ll be working royals when they grow up (🤞🏽we won’t have monarchy then). My point still stands about the favoritism and this will surely create conflict as they grow up

    • Marivic says:

I think the couple’s favorite is Charlotte. She’s the more outgoing and independent type. George, although older, seems like always to be introverted and needs a lot of hand-holding from his parents. He looks like his great great grandfather the Duke of Windsor except that the boy super shy— maybe took after king George VI.

  45. Robin Samuels says:

To those attempting to justify William’s use of a typewriter in the 21st century, eye roll. He has used ZOOM throughout the early pandemic, owns a cellphone, and commutes in a helicopter that more than likely is tech-savvy. His bots loved labeling Meghan as a D or Z-list actress. The Royal family is onstage constantly. What comes after Z? KP needs a professional PR team to clean up the mess and create a more positive global image of a group of people drowning in mediocrity.
William needs mental health counseling. His “I’m the stronger one” facade is cracking. He is trying too hard to compete with those who are not in a competition.
    Is Jason the KP Fawcett?

  46. RoyalBlue says:

I have not looked at his video announcement of the finalists, but the glorious thing is my twitterfeed is absent of any mention of this. TOB is fighting desperately to find a legacy and people are just meh about it.

and miss me with these teasers and just wake me up for the final.

  47. Murphy says:

I’m impressed he got 800 people to tune in, this is the first I’ve even heard of it.

  48. Mrs.Krabapple says:

“What is the maximum positive personal contribution I can make in the next 10 years”

Was there supposed to be an answer in the press release? Because I couldn’t find one. Here’s one suggestion (that is too late) don’t have more than 2 kids. Or, stop flying places. Or, promote the dissolution of the beef industry. Or, . . . [fill in the blanks]. But what was William’s answer? I don’t see how he can be effective on this issue if he can’t even articulate how he thinks he can make a difference. I mean, even if I don’t like William, I think that environmental damage is one of the biggest crimes against the planet and would LIKE to see William make a difference. But I just don’t see it.

My favorite part of the video is that we don’t have to see his face for very long. It’s mostly his (ew) fingers, and I hope I am not the only one who thought, “I bet those aren’t even his own fingers. Finger double.”

  50. Eating Popcorn says:

Can we talk about there not being a photo of his wife & kids anywhere in sight? Just sayin’

    • swirlmamad says:

He was so busy trying to make sure we all know how close Prince Philip was with HIS son (since Phil was apparently Zooming regularly with Archie when he was still alive), he forgot to include his wife and two other kids in his family photo arrangement.

  51. HeatherC says:

For someone who badly needs to appeal to the younger generations….this is a fail.

These are the generations that can text/tweet/post lightning fast with just their thumbs.

It may make him more relatable to the “poke and hope” generation though.

  52. FluglyBear says:

This is sad. Kaiser is correct his team needs to be replaced. Presenting the future with a typewriter is the stupidest thing possible.

  53. Lesley says:

    Le sigh.

At least William is typing something to do with the foreword? Katie Keen can only manage to “top and tail” something that someone else has produced, and sometimes she can only scrawl her first name?

    Sigh (again)

    • notasugarhere says:

You think William wrote any of this at all? Try the three dozen office staff.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

It is very hard to believe William came up with any of this. We’re talkng about a guy who per Katie Nicholl’s piece, Wills and the Real Girl, didn’t want to go back to St. Andrew’s after one semester. St. Andrew’s apparently said they would do what needed to be done because they didn’t want Will to leave-it wouldn’t look good. Sheesh, KN’s story said that supposedly Kate took notes for Will because of conflicts in his schedule. WTF. He didn’t have to do royal engagements while in school. His “job” was to go to school. What the frack were his scheduling conflicts outside of boredom & laziness?

  54. Here4Tea says:

Without realising it, William has emp!oyed the perfect metaphor to sum up that institution, antiquated and verging on obsolescence. A real office, as opposed to his let’s-pretend one, would a least have a dictionary.

Just think, for years they tried to paint Harry as the dim brother. Aye right!

  55. Abby says:

This title made me laugh OUT LOUD and the video did not dissappoint. Thank you for this comedic gold.

  56. nina says:

Besides the type writer I am shocked that in this day and age he types like an old man. I don’t know about the UK, but typing skills is the first thing they teach when introducing you to computers in grade school.
Maybe his team told him it will be attention grabbing. I don’t know, O well back to my drinking…

  57. Lizzie says:

This screams wounded ego and maybe even incandescent fury. Harry is a big deal, make ME look like a big deal too. Oh sir, you’ll star in another video and you’ll be marvelous as always.
I guess the dummy has a big enough ego to believe it too.
Everyone’s job at KP today, get everyone you know to click on the bloody thing so there are views.

  58. Janice Hill says:

I thought it was kind of funny. Or at least it would have been if he had not been so serious.

  59. Melly says:

It would be hilarious if not for the fact that Uk taxpayers fund this moron. 39 years old and this is his output? Absolutely disgraceful. The bar isn’t low, it’s practically subterranean!

  60. IRMAVEP says:

OMG! William has put his name in the top right hand corner. He’s never REALLY LOOKED at a business letter’s layout. All his correspondence must have been via email.

  61. Noor says:

Would it be fair to say that the multi million project The Earthshot Prize is given to Prince William on a silver platter.

I believe Prince Charles is the more deserving and credible royal to front the project given his environmentalist background and interests.

  62. Amy Too says:

I think I’ve figured out why his constant refrain of “I want to be able to look George in the eye and tell him what I did to combat climate change” bugs me so much. At first I thought it was just that it’s all about William wanting to make William feel better when William talks to William’s child about what William did. And it’s that. But it goes further. He is going to be the King, the leader of an entire Commonwealth of nations that are spread throughout the world. You would think, as King, as the leader of the monarchy which we are told exists solely to serve the people of the CW, that he would want to be able to look “the people” in the eye wherever he goes, and tell them that he did what he could FOR THEM. But no, it’s all about HIS family, HIS heir, HIS son. George is the single most important person in the world to him besides himself because George was born into the right family to the right man in the right birth order. “I want to be able to tell my kids that I did everything I could” works for someone like me who is only the “leader” (co-leader really) of my own 3 person family. I do not run a city, state, country, or kingdom. I am not the CEO of some kind of national park or wildlife preserve, or international climate change initiative. If I were, my main priority would be being able to tell all those people whom I lead that I did what I could for *them* because they are all relying on me and my work would be in service to them. I would not be doing it all solely for my child.

Honestly, George Cambridge of Middle England is not going to be nearly as affected by climate change as someone who lives in one of the Caribbean island countries that are experiencing constant hurricanes, one of the African countries experiencing drought and record high temperatures, northern Canada experiencing tremendous amount of ice melt, or basically any of the other commonwealth countries. England is honestly doing pretty well and is still pretty temperate when it comes to experiencing the consequences of extreme weather and global warming. But William is more concerned about George, and George’s future and comfort in George’s little area of the world, and making sure that George knows that he did what he could for George.

So it’s that “me and mine are the most important” sort of thing, but it’s also the “I’m not even remembering to think about all those people in all those countries that I am supposedly the benevolent, caring, involved leader of.” If he just wants to be a dad who is concerned about his own child’s future, then why the F does he also need/want to be the King of some 50+ other countries?

I literally found this on the commonwealth dot org website: “32 of our members are classified as small states. Small states are especially vulnerable to things like climate change or developmental challenges.”

    • notasugarhere says:

The British monarch is not the leader of ‘an entire Commonwealth of nations’. The British monarch is the generally ignored defacto/puppet head of state of 16 countries including the UK. There are 54 nations in The Commonwealth total, including powerhouses like Canada, Australia, New Zealand all of whom are looking at dumping the Windsors.

The position of PR head of The Commonwealth is not an inherited royal position. The Queen pressured the members to vote Charles in as the ‘head’ out of nostalgia, But they can and will vote him out whenever they want. I think they’ll vote him out right after QEII is buried.

    • Duch says:

@Amytoo, that’s a great analysis (incl Nota’s amendment). I hadn’t thought of that angle, but it’s really astute. “I want to do what i can to help” or “do my bit” would be much better. The problem is, he doesn’t believe it. Sad.

  63. nina says:

Seem like everyone is announcing an “Earthshot” now. the US Secretary announced their Hydrogenshot. This is not going to be game changer that Jason and William envisioned when they announced it.
They don’t own the rights to the name Earthshot, so anyone and everyone can use it. The had to name their initiative Earthshot Prize because the company who own the actual Earthshot name refused to relinquish it. BAWHAHAHA.

  64. tamsin says:

William has convened some rich donors to contribute to prize money to people who are actually doing something to combat climate change. Nothing wrong with that- that’s the kind of thing his position in life equips him to do. What is terrible is that he talks as though he personally is contributing the money and doing all research. It is completely ego driven. The whole thing is HIS contribution to saving the world. Kudos to his staff for getting enough donors, and whatever group of people adjudicating the entries.

  65. Noor says:

The tabloids and other commentators usually state in accusatory tones that if Prince Harry is not a prince he would not be able to get the Netflix contracts etc.

This is also true of William. Which 39 years old with little track record on climate control work and expertise would be able to attract donations to the tune of $50 millions for the Earthshot Prize if not for the fact that he is a prince and a future king.
