Courtney Love loses custody of daughter Frances Bean – again

Around Smashbox - Fall 2006 - Day 5

Troubled rocker Courtney Love has lost custody of her 17-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. The order came down last Friday, with a family court judge citing increasingly erratic behavior by Love. The court appointed Frances’ grandmother, Wendy O’Connor, mother of late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, and Kimberly Cobain, Kurt’s sister, as the teen’s new legal guardians.

Courtney Love no longer has legal control of her daughter. TMZ has learned a legal guardian has been appointed to care for 17-year-old Frances Bean Cobain.
Guardianships of this nature are frequently established when the parent is not capable of taking care of their children.

The guardians appointed by the court are Wendy O’Connor, Kurt Cobain’s mom, and Kimberly Dawn Cobain, Kurt’s sister.

The guardianship was established on Friday. Courtney Love was not in court.

The guardianship is for both Frances Bean personally and her financial well-being.

The guardians do not have power over the trust established after Kurt Cobain’s death.

The guardianship was established after a fairly long period of unstable conduct by Courtney Love. The court proceedings, however, are sealed.

[From TMZ]

Love previously lost custody of Frances back in 2003, when she was only 11 years old. In that case, Frances was taken away after it was revealed that she was in the home during one of Courtney Love’s drug overdoses – in fact, Frances was the one who called 911. It took Love 15 months to clean up her act and get custody returned to her. Sources say that once Courtney regained custody of Frances, the girl saw little of her father’s family and was “bothered” by some of her mom’s antics. More recently, Courtney has been ranting online about her belief that Britney Spears was molested by her father, as well as accusing her ex-boyfriend Ed Norton of mishandling Kim Cobain’s property. Not sure how her recent behavior is any less insane than usual, but there must be more to it than some badly misspelled Tweets, or the court wouldn’t be getting involved.

The only good news is that in a year, Frances will be a legal adult, and hopefully she will be far away from her mom’s whacko influence.

  1. Brooke says:

My first thought on seeing the picture was, honestly, that if Courtney hadn’t had fifteen million plastic surgeries her child would be able to see her own features in her mother’s face. Now what consolation has she got for being… shall we say… challenged?

  2. LolaBella says:

No surprise here; her cracked out tweets alone are an indication that Courtney is back on something.

I hope that she gets the help she needs to get better.

I hope that what has happened/is happening to her mother scares Frances Bean straight and is the deterrent that keeps her from ever going down a similar path.

  3. Sumodo says:

So, where does Frances go to live?

  4. hannah says:

    she looks like her daddy…
hopefully she doesn’t follow in their shoes, because with both parents being drug addicts, her odds at the get go aren’t exactly great.

    Poor girl

  5. Lee says:

@LolaBella: unfortunately the “deterrent” factor of an having an addicted parent is non-existent. It’s more likely to be a probable predictor of addiction in their offspring. It happens time and time again, in regular people, as well as celebrities.

  6. Goddess711 says:

When does she turn 18? She’ll be legal age to choose for herself, won’t she? She looks a lot like Kurt.

  7. Tia C says:

I believe that addiction is primarily (although of course not always) genetic in origin. So the “deterrent factor” is kind of a moot point anyway. You either have the genetic tendency for addiction or you don’t. It remains to be seen about Frances Bean! LOL, I rhymed…didn’t mean to. At least she’s got folks looking out for her, that is a good thing.

  8. diva says:

It’s too bad they didn’t leave the child with the original custodial agreement. Courtney seems totally mentally ill and in need of medication and counseling to be a parent. Maybe this will be the wakeup call for her to get help, she is really coming undone and it is more than just drug abuse at work.

  9. Carrie says:

That poor kid- her dad commits suicide when she’s a toddler and her mom is…well, Courtney Love.
Kid really drew the short stick, huh?

  10. Lisa says:

I think it’s a little too late to worry about Courtney Love influence on her daughter, I have read Frances Bean recent twitter rant, she sounds just as crazy and stuck up as crazy Courtney.

  11. fan says:

FRANCES WILL MOST LIKELY BE LIVING WITH WENDY IN A SMALL TOWN JUST OUTSIDE OF ABERDEEN WHERE KURT GREW UP AT

AND FRANCES MAY ALSO ASK FOR TO BE ON HER OWN BECAUSE IN 9 MONTHS SHE WILL BE AN ADULT SO SHE MAY SEE IF SHE GET THAT GRATED

AND @LISA SHE IS NOT CRAZY SHE JUST LIKE TO PROTECT HER PRIVACY

  12. Cristi says:

ya- if they wanted to help Frances, they would have done it years ago. I’m sorry, but it’s too late now- she’s grown.

  13. Jano says:

I agree with Cristi. It should have been done when she was younger.

Hope she proves us wrong and turns out right!

But don’t count on it 🙁

  14. Jenna says:

She’s going to be living with Kurt’s mother (Thank you Micheal K at Dlisted.com). She looks so much like her father. I really hope she turns out well in the next few years.

  15. Firestarter says:

Hmm, a little late for her to lose custody, when the girl will be 18 pretty soon.

  16. Schmoopie says:

So Courtney must have gone off her (prescribed) meds again… that rant about Britney sure sounded like she was riding the crest of mania. Take the meds you are prescribed; don’t take the illegal ones. It’s very simple, Court.

  17. Rosanna says:

Given the middle name she gave to her daughter I would have taken away custody a lot sooner LOL

  18. MooMooMooMooMoo says:

@diva you are so right, it’s actually really fucking sad. Whatever her problems are, unfortunately, I think they’re insurmountable in this lifetime :/

It would take 100 years of professional help to bring Courtney back to sanity. I wish someone would evaluate her, for all her craziness she’s really smart.

  19. GatsbyGal says:

Courtney Love shouldn’t even be the legal guardian of a pet rock, nevermind her daughter.

  20. la chica says:

lately Frances herself has been showing signs of taking after Mom, e.g., her attack on Ali Lohan. this is a good decision but it was taken too late IMHO.

  21. Solveig says:

No peace for daddy’s little girl.
I can see her father in her eyes, so sad. I loved him.
I don’t think Francis Bean is showing the influence of her mother on her. She sounds quiet smart (talking about the letter to Ali Lohan, which has good points and smart assertions), you don’t see her partying or doing drugs, she’s not a brat. I’ve always had the impression that she is a quiet mature and intelligent teen… expecially considering who her mother is and the pain she’s suffered during her whole life.

  22. Frenchie says:

I agree that she looks like her dad, minus the greasy hair, and sorry, first poster, her look is not chalanged.
She is only 17 and will surely done boose and drugs, like we all did at that age. The most important thing is damage control, and to know when to stop / move on to other interesting hobbies, which her mother never did.

  23. Dannni says:

This makes sense since Frances Bean lived with grandma Cobain most of the time ’till she was 10 anyway. Having a parent with a persistent mental illness is never easy for teenagers. They usually end up taking on the role of parent.

  24. Ursula says:

‘Lately Frances herself has been showing signs of taking after Mom, e.g., her attack on Ali Lohan. this is a good decision but it was taken too late IMHO…’

Don’t forget her suicide themed birthday party.

Oh and people Magazine is reporting that the girl wants to live with her grandmother according to the mother’s lawyer.

  25. lilred says:

IMO she should have been living with her Gramma all along.

Unfortunately for Frances she will never be able to fully break away from that parasite of a mother.

I have a weird feeling that Kourtney would be one of those stalker types, following her and making her feel guilty, etc.

  26. pickelhaube says:

Poor little rich girl…seriously. Can you imagine having Courtney Love as a mother? It’s a damned miracle she’s even alive (considering that Courtney had something to do with Kurt’s “suicide” IMO), so I can’t hate on anything she does. I hope she finds some type of stable influence in her life, and I do wish her the best. She is a uniquely beautiful girl and deserves to be happy. I just hope she finds happiness OUTSIDE the spotlight, considering what it’s done to her parents.

  27. Alexa says:

Whoa – how anyone could insult this girl (Frances) is beyond me. What an evil and cruel thing to do. She needs mega-LOVE, guidance, stability and security. Let’s not kick people when they are down.

  28. original kate says:

    so untalented.

  29. Millie says:

Poor Frances Bean! She’s probably come to the realisation that Courtney has squandered her trust fund and doesn’t want anything more to do with her. Imagine how awful it must have been to have grown up surrounded by druggies.

  30. amy says:

I can’t believe I’m old enough to remember Francis as a Baby Bean….

  31. ErikaWybney says:

This is absurd. they are taking her kid away because she is starting to spill the beans on the pedophile rings in hollywood which include Britney Spears’. Roseanne Barr has also been involved in secret spilling of the MIND CONTROL being used on celebrities and the people behind it. Hold onto your hats they celebrities are going to take it apart themselves.

  32. Lochgelly says:

    Courtney acts guilty…

  33. click here says:
