Gwyneth Paltrow has been doing some lighter media hits in recent years, stuff she would probably never deign to do back when she was a full-time actress. But now she’s a lifestyle brand with a podcast and a Target line, so she has to (shudder) try to appeal to the grubby masses by (double shudder) slumming it on the Call Her Daddy podcast and Hot Ones. Gwyneth’s Call Her Daddy pod interview was actually okay if you enjoy vintage gossip (which I do). Her Hot Ones video is different though. Like, she clearly believes she’s above this. I imagine she fired whoever convinced her to do this. As far as handling the extremely hot sauces though, she did pretty well. By the time she got to Da Bomb, you could see that she was basically forcing herself to go into a trance-like meditative state to handle the pain.
One of the big headlines I saw from this was Gwyneth’s quotes about her favorite herbs. She has a huge herb garden at her Hamptons estate, and Sean Evans referenced that garden and asked about her herbs. Gwyneth proceeded to get snotty about DILL! She said: “I love all herbs except for dill, which should be illegal. It’s so gross. It ruins everything and anything it touches…[it’s] dominant and just bad.” As for her favorite herb, she said: “I know it’s boring, but basil is my favorite. It’s just so fragrant and it’s so optimistic. It smells like summer and tomatoes.” Is dill really that bad? It depends what it’s paired with – you can just throw dill into just any dish. Dill with a potato salad or chicken salad? Amazing. I guess that makes me a dill peasant though.

I gotta agree with her about dill. But then I hate pickles, too.
ditto.
Herbs are tricky because they taste different to everyone. So when someone says they hate an herb I just put it in the same category as cilantro – which a lot of folks hate because it tastes like soap to them. It might genuinely taste gross to her. I love dill.
I love dill and dislike cilantro. Go figure. 🤷
She was taking the tiniest bites lmao. For me this hardly counts. I don’t hate dill, it can be good in a dip or on salmon, her pronouncements don’t move me.
I like dill, but it can be overpowering at times. Rosemary however is the devil’s weed!!
Oh I love rosemary! Now anise (and fennel which I know is a veg not an herb but still) shudder. I hate licorice.
I hate licorice with a passion!
I like red licorice, but do not ever bring black licorice anywhere near me! That stuff tastes awful!
Who will speak out for those who despise cilantro? 😂 Seriously, some people have that gene that makes cilantro taste really bad.
I will! Cilantro makes me feel like I’ve had my mouth washed out with soap. The only thing shocking about this Hot One’s interview is that Poopy Paltrow eats wings?!
She is so wrong. Worse Herb by far is cilantro. Once you hear it tastes like soap to some you will never be able to NOT taste the soap in it. And have you seen her Herb garden in the Hamptons? It’s amazing. Goop has some beautiful properties I’ll give her that.
I like dill, I use it on fish. It’s also good for digestion.
Yes! It’s so good on salmon!
Salt, pepper, olive oil, dill on salmon and surround it with broccoli or cauliflower florets on a sheet pan in the oven for 20 minutes on 420. Takes five minutes to prep and my kids love it. We do it once or twice a week bc I’m way too busy to cook.
Sounds delish, Eloise! I’m going to try this.
Dill just tastes wrong to me. I don’t even know how to describe it. As soon as I put it in my mouth, my body is instantly like, “that’s not something you should be eating. Get it out.”
Dill is one of my favorites! I have dill dip in my refrigerator currently. Now I love it even more. lol every time I eat it, I’ll just think of seething Gwyneth Paltrow watching me and thinking I’m such a peasant.
I like it too, I never have fish without it. And sour cream/cucumber dips aren’t complete without it!
It’s so interesting about how different people taste things. I love dill and pretty much every herb. But, for some reason, cream of tartar tastes disgusting to me. I can’t take a bite of snickerdoodle without spitting it out.
‘this is so funny bc I can’t tell you what cream of tartar tastes like – I bake with it, but I have never noticed its taste in a finished product.
I find all this fascinating. Like when people say cilantro tastes like soap to them – maybe cilantro tastes the same to everyone and some people just think soap tastes good and some don’t? Or soap tastes different to cilantro lovers? Like if I taste dill and Paltrow tastes dill, does it taste the same to each of us and her brain just doesnt like that taste, or does it taste different, and if tasted to me the way it tasted to her I would also hate it?
These are the things that run through my head when I can’t sleep, LOL.
I think about these things, too. I’ve used cream of tartar for beating egg whites – just a pinch – but the amount that goes into snickerdoodles gives me a bitter metallic taste.
I felt the same way until I tried Trader Joe’s dill vegan dressing. Delicious.
Dill is the best herb! Pickles are my favorite food. Or fresh dill in a lemon vinaigrette dressing! It’s my favorite. I find basil to be overpowering.
Dill says: “Anyone interested in my opinion about Ms. Paltrow?”
This is hilarious.
Who cares what this one thinks about anything? Dill is 100% correct.
Dill in seafood salad. Chef’s kiss.
Welp, call me a peasant bc I’m good with dill.
Grilled salmon with a white wine, Dijon, dill sauce (saute a little shallot in olive oil first) is life changing. Dill rules!
I actually thought she came off pretty well! She’s sort of a low-energy person and seems like she has a pretty dry sense of humor, and she seemed to enjoy herself in her very reserved way. The bug killing, “heteros are so funny” when she was walking him through skincare application, and “so f— you Bill Clinton!” were pretty funny.
That’s so apropos! We just finished lunch – a lovely bowl of shrimp & spinach risotto which was elevated by a tablespoon of chopped dill. We like dill. So good in this dish.
As for cilantro, for me, the jury is still out on that. 🙂
I don’t like Gwyneth Paltrow, but I hate dill.
I think the math here means that I am now neutral on Gwyneth Paltrow.
Haha dill totally is a peasant herb.
And I love it!!
I also hate dill. I agree 100% with Gwyneth on that one. I also hate cilantro but I believe I have that gene that makes it taste like soap to me.
I’m a rube, from a long line of rubes, and I like dill. Very good on parsnips, and as someone earlier mentioned, delicious in seafood salad! Hmmm makes me want to see if I can grow my own herb (dill) garden!
I watched her on Hot Ones and she was a pretentious bee with an itch. She didn’t actually take enough to taste Da’Bomb, let alone have it burn. She should have won an Oscar for this performance, not Shakespeare. I just can’t with her.
Edited to add: She should try some super hot dill pickles. She’d love those………………
Cannot help it, she makes me laugh. If you are asked weird questions about herbs, by all means give weird most random answers about herbs
I totally agree, Gwyneth!
I think it’s cute she did this show because her son likes it (especially as she went on Call her Daddy for her daughter)
Huh, never thought I would have anything in common with Goop but here we are. Dill and fresh coriander (cilantro) are my two. I just can’t.
I fucking love dill, can’t get enough of it. This just reinforces that we could never be friends.
Did you see the latest from the American Heart Association about intermittent fasting? It INCREASES likelihood of cardiac arrest by over 90%. I wonder if Gwyneth was aware she’s promoting another dangerous pseudoscience fad *sigh*
If La Paltrow were truly as classy and above it all as she tries to appear to be, she would intuitively know that one doesn’t yuck on other people’s yum.
The best way to talk about a food/taste one dislikes is “I’m so glad other people can enjoy it. More for them!”
And for things someone else dislikes that are your favorites: “This way we don’t compete for resources. More for me!”
Well, yeah, that she likes the herbs is kind of where it all went wrong for Gwyneth…
