Meryl Streep’s Globes gown was designed by Project Runway alum

The Pressroom at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards!

For true Project Runway addicts – like me – any news of fan favorite Chris March is welcome. Chris was a contestant on the fourth season of Project Runway, and he made a huge impression on pretty much everyone. He got his start as a designer making costumes for plays and shows, and making outfits for drag queens. And his style never really evolved from there – everything had to have feathers and sequins (or human hair) and everything was drama and costume. But Chris won people over with his sweet, funny, generous nature, and he came across as a totally cool guy, even as he lost to little Christian Siriano.

Anyway, don’t cry for Chris! He got to design one of the most photographed gowns from the Golden Globes. That’s right – Meryl Streep got in touch with Chris to design her Globes gown! Isn’t that wonderful? I bet Meryl watches Project Runway (like me). I bet she loves it (like me). Seriously, I bet she and her daughters watch it together and obsess, like me and my mom do. Project Runway is an awesome mother-daughter bonding activity. Anyway, back to Meryl – Chris says that she was really cool and she loved his vision for her. As well she should – Chris’s dress was lovely, age-appropriate and still sexy.

Dressing a Golden Globes winner is nothing short of a dream come true for any budding designer. And, Sunday night, that dream became a reality for Project Runway’s season four alum and fan favorite Chris March as Meryl Streep took the stage in his design!

The designer, who met the actress through her hair and makeup team, was called about a month ago to work on a design for Meryl’s double-nomination at the Globes.

“I wanted to faint!” Chris tells PEOPLE about receiving the call. “I have always wanted to design something for someone like that, and it was a great and amazing opportunity.”

Soon thereafter, Chris met with Meryl to discuss his vision. “I liked the idea of putting a belt on an evening gown–I think it gives [a gown] a modern twist. I sketched it out quickly and she really liked it,” Chris says.

And while Meryl might be one of the biggest stars in Tinseltown, Chris says meeting her was anything but intimidating. “She is the sweetest person you can imagine. She’s very friendly and welcoming and I wasn’t nervous at all.”

After turning out Meryl’s dress in under a month, all the hard work paid off when Chris watched the Julie & Julia star take the stage to receive her Golden Globe for best leading actress. “I almost had a heart attack when Colin Farrell read her name. It was very exciting to see her come up on stage wearing a dress that I made with my own two hands,” says Chris. “I thought it made her look tall and thin and comfortable and confident. It looked great!”

[From People Magazine]

Aw, that’s so sweet. You know what I learned from watching Project Runway? Besides “everything!” That there were a few huge designers who got their start much like Chris – by making over-the-top costumes, and then transitioning into ready-to-wear and street fashion. I think the name that kept being repeated over and over to Chris was “Halston”. In any case, I’m so, so happy for Chris and I’m so glad he didn’t screw up his big Golden Globes debut. He kept Meryl’s gown low-key yet chic, and she looked very comfortable and sexy. I love them both so much!

I am shocked that the dress did not have human hair incorporated in the design!! 😉

  2. Trillion says:

YAY SISSY BEAR! I’m proud to say he’s my San Francisco homegirl. And how gorgeous was that dress? Chris can go from outrageous Valkyrie tranny -wear to absolute class in a circle-up finger snap.

  3. Raven says:

I was a fan of Project Runway the first 3 seasons until I read the line in the credits section at the end of the show that the producers advised the judges on selection of the winners. I wanted an honest contest, not something rigged. The show is a good idea gone wrong. Glad Meryl is taking advantage, even if I’m not wild about the dress.

    Loved her GG speech, however.

  4. mooncake says:

    i love Chris March!

  5. Firestarter says:

I loved Chris on Project Runway and thought he should have gone to the finals.

He was such a funny guy and he had mad talent. I have also seen, in person, the costumes he did for Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco. Hysterical!

  6. Jeane says:

LOVE the dress! It’s age appropriate and flattering, and also very hip and stylish. Very 2010 with the off shoulder look! 🙂
Not crazy about the belt though. Looks like something you would wear with jeans. But I guess it works with the accessories.
Hair & make up are perfect. IMO Meryl was one of the few ladies who got it right this year!

  7. Lem says:

love the dress Love him Love her love the bonus pic of AC,
the buckle on the dress, not so much, the globes deserve better than a tacky brass buckle

  8. Peach says:

I think the dress needed more structure in the waist and less of the belt. But the top half I like.

  9. wow says:

I love Chris, but this dress? Not so much.

Some other actress also wore a dress from another PR designer. Christian Siriano designed Christina Hendricks’ dress. I loved that one.

  10. canadianchick says:

Love Project Runway-Chris’s designs have been copied since on runways-even the ghastly hair ones showed up as fake fur. Christina Hendricks looked amazing, why could I have her rack? I didnt know Siriano designed her dress. Meryl is so elegant she can even carry off that weird buckle.

  11. Ron says:

Thrilled for Chris–Loved this dress. The asemmetry of the sleeve–great. The belt looks like Donna Karan.

  12. la chica says:

nice for her that she gave him her support. good job on the dress. it goes with her age and stature. love it.

  13. jo says:

Loved the dress where can I get one? a knock off… j

  14. Krissy says:

I guess I’m in the minority. While I thought Chris had a great personality, he had no business on the runway with real ‘fashion’ designers.

Streep’s dress looks like a belted Snuggie and does nothing for her figure.

  15. kelly says:

freakin loved it chris! way to ..”make it work”

  16. juiceinla says:

Wow what great info on Chris- I had no idea he Did the Beach Blanket Babylon costumes!

I don’t like the dress, but I like the guy!

  17. Firestarter says:

@juiceinia- Not all of them, but he did do many prior to being on Runway.

  18. RobN says:

Love Chris, but the dress is BORING.

  19. canadianchick says:

@Krissy lmao you’re right re the snuggy. I think Billy Bush tried to have Sandra Bullock put a pink snuggy on-glad she turned him down.

  20. hatsumomo says:

I’ve never seen PR but I’ve heard of it. Not familiar with the designers either. But I did like Meryl’s dress. in the vernacular of my southern upbringing, it sure looked real nice and fancy on her.

  21. Essie says:

I really like Meryl’s dress but I think the belt should have been “sparkly” to dress it up more. Otherwise, I like the shape and it is age-appropriate and looks very comfortable.

Chris is my all time favorite PR designer. He was just so adorable, relaxed and low-key. I loved the episode when he took a nap while all the other designers were running around like nuts to finish. Chris just woke up from his nap, finished that particular outfit and I believe he finished in the top three for that episode. He’s so cool!!

  22. GatsbyGal says:

OMFG CHRIS MARCH! It makes me so happy that he’s still designing and making awesome dresses!

  23. Lenore says:

Not a fan of the dress; it seems kind of shapeless and drab. Lose the sleeve, get some structure in the bodice and maybe use a less sacklike material, something that flows, and it might work.

I do like the asymmetrical rolled neck, though. And she DOES look gorgeous, but then, it’s Meryl Streep, of course she does. 😀

  24. Trillion says:

I think she looks lovely, yes, very understated but this is GG. I hope she ramps it up for Oscars.

  25. snapdragon says:

i love chris march, and i thought his clothes on PR were unusual and beautiful. i wish he had shown at bryant park instead of the boring drapey guy.

  26. Istanem says:

Love Chris, Love Meryl, Love the dress! Who is a real fashion designer anyway – only who we say is or is it you Krissy ?

  27. sasa says:

    She looks lovely!

  28. Dawn says:

Oh, Meryl. You’re just stunning and all class.
