Jennifer Aniston donates 1/2 a million to charities helping Haiti

Hope For Haiti Now: A Global Benefit For Earthquake Relief held in Los Angeles
Jennifer Aniston has donated a whopping 1/2 million to help charities in Haiti after the devastating earthquake. She didn’t put out a press release at all, and from the way this story is worded it sounds like Marc Malkin at E! Online heard about it through the grapevine and is the one who chose to make it public. We’ve already heard that celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, and Brad and Angelina donated a million or more to charity in the wake of the tragedy. Apparently Aniston gave a large amount too, she just did it quietly.

Add Jennifer Aniston to the list of celebs donating major bucks to help Haiti.

I just got word that the actress has given $500,000 to Doctors Without Borders, Partners in Health and AmeriCares for their recovery efforts in the disaster-stricken Caribbean nation.

Aniston also participated Friday’s megastar-studded Hope for Haiti Now telethon, which as of today has raised $61 million.

[From E! Online]

So did Jennifer Aniston want this to be made public and did she tell one outlet to make it sound like it got leaked instead of announced? Does it matter? I’m of the mind that it’s positive when celebrities announce their charity efforts because it encourages the rest of us to get involved. I’ve learned a lot about legitimate, worthwhile causes by following celebrity news. (Yes, it’s a completely superficial way to become educated on issues, but it has helped serve as a starting point for me. This is what I do for a living.) Plus, Aniston deserves a lot of credit, like all of the other celebrities and people who donated, for getting involved in the “Hope for Haiti” telethon. You can still donate at HopeforHaitiNow.org.

This lady is indeed awesome. Blessed is the hand that giveth and the hand that receives.

  2. bite me says:

am going to be negative, i thought he did his charity work quietly… 500k is a lot of money to give good for jenny

  3. N.D. says:

what?! no famewh*re accusation this time?!

Good to know that she has not only the perfect body but the generous heart as well.

  4. Mairead says:

    Fair play to her.

On another subject, I think John Cusack needs to invest in a hair dye a shade or two lighter.

  5. Kevin says:

I see these large amounts of money being sent over to Haiti to help these poor people, but I can’t help but wonder how much of it is really getting to them. Haiti has been on financial life support for years from other countries only to see their corrupt gov’t not let it get past their pockets. Well, anyways, good for you Jen.

  6. DoMaJoReMc says:

The true giving spirit is one who does good deeds, silently or anonymously. It does not seem charitable when you do a good deed and ANNOUNCE IT so everyone knows what you did. Good for Jennifer for doing this on the ‘down low’ (even though Marc Malkin took it upon himself to get it out there).

  7. lucy2 says:

I was surprised when I saw this because I had never seen her announce a donation before, but that explains it a little better. Whatever the case may be, that’s a generous donation, as all the celeb donations have been, and I’m sure is much appreciated.
I’d worry about the money more if it were going into the hands of government, but if it’s going to groups like those three, all of them have great track records and are very efficient with their funds. Plus I always think about how supporting those groups will also help them prepare for the next disaster as well.

  8. Phowie says:

I wonder who she’s talking to on the phone and who she, Cusack and Cohen are all looking at? She sure looks happy. She deserves credit for working the phones, as well as giving the cash.

  9. hmm says:

I think it’s wonderful that she made the donation and I’m sure that a lot of celebs have donated and we just don’t know how much. Marc Malkin doesn’t have superpowers, so if he got the information it’s because he was meant to.

  10. Lil says:

Why when its Jennifer Aniston everybody have to question if she told in purpose?
Aaaaaah but if is the f*** brangelina, than nooooo
    never its for publicity!

    Good for Jennifer!!!
    Beautiful out and inside!

  11. Jay says:

I think she meant for this to get as much attention as it could get. It’s her pr team trying to get as much media attention in any way they can. For the sake of the people in Haiti I glad she gave. The attention should be on the people of Haiti not Jennifer Aniston. That’s how you know it’s her pr team. Just like her showing up at the GG everything has to be about Jen that’s why she pays big bucks to a pr team.

  12. Me says:

Damnit, I should have called the telethon and talked to Bruno and Jennifer Aniston!

  13. Lil says:

    Ooooo yeaaaahhhhh

But Brangelina its not for attention????

    BS!!!!!

  14. bite me says:

why doesn’t jenny ask Smartwater to send some aqua to Haiti

  15. princess pea says:

@ Jay – Was it also Clooney’s PR team that let us know he organized the fundraiser, just to make it about him? Was it DiCaprio’s PR team behind the plot to let us know that he donated money? Was it a famewhore move for Sandra Bullock, Lance Armstrong, Alyssa Milano, Ben Stiller, or Gisele Bundchen?

  16. SageAdvice says:

Right, Jay, that’s why there is no press release and neither she, nor any of her reps have said anything. Makes perfect sense that she would be trying to get “as much attention as it could get”.

  17. Kim says:

The grapevine ,the same grapevine that People Magazine used to do their article= her friends

  18. Dot LeSage says:

I think it’s terrific that she’s doing the 1, 2 punch of personal giving and being a face for the campaign. She’s a great woman all around.

  19. Mairead says:

@ Phowie, I’d say that they are images from the fundraising telethon organised by George Clooney last Friday; you can see Pierce Brosnan in front in some of them.

@ Lil, Brangelina have nothing to do with this story. It’s tiresome when Jennifer gets dragged into an unrelated story about them and it’s no less annoying when the reverse happens.

And what does it matter why she gave the money – so long as she gave it. Everybody gives or does something for charity because it makes them feel good to do it. So long as the net gain is for the cause in the long-run, I can’t see the point of moral grandstanding.

  20. iris says:

    wowow Good for Jennifer..

  21. Solveig says:

At least now nobody can say that she doesn’t give a rat’s a** about poor people etc.
But I still don’t think that charity is a public affair.

  22. Camille says:

Good for her on giving what she can afford… And yeah isn’t it just amazing how this got leaked out! Wow! Just amazing. Its also so amazing how she never does anything for publicity or whatever.
All praise Saint Jennifer! God Bless The JA!

  23. Bek says:

How ANNOYING some of you are! First of all, Brangie isn’t even mentioned here. Second, if you’re going to believe in a conspiracy theory, then don’t pick and choose what to believe. If you know beyond benefit of the doubt that Jen is doing this for publicity, then accept the idea that all celebs, including Brangie, are doing it for publicity too. Or you could stop trying to make it into something more than it is and go back to your alien-hoax program or continue writing your article on why you think we never actually landed on the moon.

  24. June says:

I think it is great that Jennifer gave and I think it is great that Brangelina gave.

What I’m confused about is the same people that criticized Brangelina , for making their donation public, thinks that it is great the St.Jennifer gave and made it public.

How do we know that someone did not leak Brangelina’s donation, just like they claim St.Jen’s donation was leaked?

This just shows that no matter, what Brangelina does, there will be some who will complain about it. And no matter how low St.Jennifer stoops, there will be those who will sing her praises.

  25. chickentikkatellmewhatswrong says:

It was then that Angelina announced she would adopt “One miiiiilllliioooooonnnnn Orphans hahahahha”

  26. kelly says:

These pics are really strange? WHY is she posing and laughing for a charity telethon? Sacha Baron Cohen seems really annoyed with her antics. WAY to show appropriate emotion for a tragedy, Jen! I really don’t buy her. To me, these pics say EVERYTHING about her. She’s just jumping on the latest trend to look good. And, NO, I’m not a fan of those others, so save your blather.

  27. June says:

I was thinking the same thing, Jennifer looks crazy or high. Why is she laughing like that, leaning all across the desk, like she is trying to get these two guys to look at her azz.

It is hilarious, they are not playing her any attention. Jennifer is going to make sure the camera, sees her.

This was a serious moment, very inappropriate to try to get laid at such an event.

We know you are desperate, Jennifer but damm.

  28. karen says:

She seems like she’s goofing off, talking to someone in the room. She hardly looks like she’s working the phones for charity. classy.

  29. SageAdvice says:

There is really no telling what is going on in these pictures. Seems to me that someone on someone else’s phone wanted to talk to her so that other celebrity gave her the phone.

Also,Brange released a press statement. Jennifer did not. That is the point.Brangelina announced how much and hers apparently got leaked by some Eonline guy. I’m not getting where the confusion is there.

Lastly, there is no reason to sit around sullen and depressed looking when you aren’t sullen or depressed. It’s a serious event, yes. But that doesn’t mean people aren’t allowed to laugh or smile. Jeez. Some of you must be the most boring people in the world.

I’ve been to one funeral and wake in my life and the funeral was pure misery-everyone was crying and sad and no one really said much. At the wake, on the other hand, people were trading stories about the deceased, laughing and joking about experiences they had had with her.

I don’t understand why it’s inappropriate for her to talk to someone else in the room or to smile.

  30. Cheyenne says:

Good lord, who cares why anybody gives, as long as they give?

Note for anybody who hasn’t given already: The New York Times ran a story about donating through texting. They said that because of logistical problems or whatever, it can take up to 90 days for your money to go to the source it’s intended for. The money gets there much quicker if you mail a check directly to the charity or make an online donation to that charity’s web site. So I’d go the online or snail mail route. (I donated to Doctors Without Borders on their website.)

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, please make sure the charity you are donating to is legit. Check out http://www.charitynavigator.org. They rate all the charities according to efficiency, four stars (best) to one (worst). Giving to a 4-star charity is your best bet. (The Red Cross is rated at three.) It pays to investigate before you donate so you can be sure your money will be used in the way you want it to be used.

  31. gemma says:

That’s it you see 3 photo of her during a all night and you jump to conclusion!! Did you know what the person on the phone was saying to her? Especially that we can see the one where she’s laughing it wasn’t her phone but sasha’s one! Maybe sasha had someone who’s really fan of jen and decided to give her the phone! And I don’t see where you see he’s annoying because I see him as the other guy smiling about that! Did you just take time to read what they were saying about her? Really I don’t get why you’re just trying so hard to make of her a bad person whereas her entourage, as brad too told that she is a good one!
besides I saw others pictures where she had a discret smile like the others had so before accusing people like that, make correctly you research, and read the article to open your mind on what people think of her! God is that possible in those hard times we can just rather together and stop trying a moment to be so hateful! is that possible people?

Sageadvice I’m so agree with what you’re saying!!

  32. Solveig says:

What I find inappropriate here is that people probably call and donate JUST because they have the chance to talk to one of their idols and not because they are concerned about Haiti.
    This is inappropriate.

  33. lilkunta says:

Hwy didint she give $1mill. She is able to afford it.

  34. gemma says:

to lilkunta: as a couple brangelina gave 1million so 500 000 individually! they have more money than her! And brad bough a house of 11.1 millions $! So they could give more too… but the fact is they give a lot of money, money who certainly will relieve this country! So stop complaining and just see the beauty of their act!
Since when the most important is how many you give? It’s stupid! The most important thing is that you gave something, and if you can you give generously : 500 000$ is a generous act! I’m sure that people who are hungry, who need help, and more are happy of that donation!
what you say is really shallow..

  35. theresa says:

Who the hell cares why they’re donating?
Don’t you think they have the celebrities taking calls for just that purpose??? :rolls eyes:

  36. Josephina says:

Who gives a sh** how it is anounced? The point is that she GAVE.

The People magazine article made her look shallow and simple in the wake of the Haiti earthquake. “Five Years After Brad…what the hell?” She said it was an amicable, peaceful split. No villains. Are we not to believe her own words? She allowed this to be printed? You gotta be kidding. What does it say when we would rather discuss the black dress she wore at the Golden Globes rather than give coverage to a rapidly rising death toll due to a natural disaster?

She should not have been on the cover considering the tragedy. Her work as a movie actress was definitely not the focus. It went on and on about her looks and fit body and some potential relationship with Butler. Well, that’s not true because there are pictures of him sucking face with some woman the other day. I cannot think of another actress that would allow herself to be defined by a very public and humiliating divorce 5 years later after the fact.

  37. Sincerity says:

Kudos for Jennifer Aniston! Anyone who has that kind of money laying around and decides to make a donation to help these poor Haitians is all right in my book. May GOD bless her!

  38. SageAdvice says:

Josephina: You do know that Jennifer Aniston has zero control over what is printed about her in that magazine? It may be rumored to be a publicist friendly magazine but they still get to put whatever story they want with whatever cover they want in their magazine. If you are going to blame someone for that cover, blame People Magazine and their editors, not Jennifer Aniston.

I highly doubt People Magazine contacted her to say “Why yes, we’re putting you on our cover and we’re going to talk about how pathetic and loserly you are by not having gotten married and had children by now, ok?”

She didn’t “allow it to be printed”. Gossip magazines don’t ask the celebrities they write about if it’s ok to write about them. They don’t give them a rundown of everything they are going to put in there.

  39. princess pea says:

Hey June, karen and Kelly, I hope you reserve a little wrath for the Cloon himself, who was also photographed smiling and *gasp* laughing (!!!) during the telethon. Some people, huh? What total jerks. When a person called and was offered the chance to talk to a celeb, the celebs should totally have been all “you better be crying right now bitch!” I mean, puh-lease. And you what? I saw Julia Roberts and Steven Speilberg smiling too. Fucked up. They should have sat around weeping, that would have been a good telethon.

  40. lolo says:

Uh-oh, someone enraged the Aniston nuts–the same people who criticized Brad/Angie for giving 1 million (it’s all PR!) but now PRAISE Aniston to high heaven for giving 1/2 million (she’s a saint!). Such hypocrites. And, karen and others are stating the obvious–Aniston looks like she’s having a real good time POSING, not working. If Brad/Angie did that, they’d be skewered. These same people have analyzed every photo of Brad and Angie to state that they are miserable, bad parents, etc. But, someone does the same for Jen and your whole world falls apart. You people are so ridiculous . . .

  41. gemma says:

and you, you still jump to conclusion with 3 pictures, without knowing what’s going on and why she was laughing (even if it’s a little bit obvious but anyway)… Your criticize people but you still do the same thing… It’s the only way you found to proove how superior you are, right?
I don’t understand why in hard time like that people just can’t stop be mean and search anything which can give them the possibility to be mean and hatefull… And I’m talking to angie as jen fans… It’s sad people , really really really sad…

  42. sherie says:

I agree w>june. Aniston has always been a poseur who jumps on the latest trends. She only did this charity thing to look like she cares. Who knows if she actually does? It’s just good PR for her.

  43. Kim says:

Sageadvice ,Sandra Bullock released a press release about her million donation why wasn’t she criticized. She also released press releases when she donated 1 million for Katrina and the Tsunami. she also talks about the money she donates to fix up schools in New Orleans . Please explain the difference between her and Brad and Angie. Anyone?

  44. Praise St. Angie! says:

“Aniston has always been a poseur who jumps on the latest trends. She only did this charity thing to look like she cares. ”

yeah, I guess that’s why she’s been a major donor and fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital FOR YEARS.

  45. whatever says:

@Praise: sure in the past few years when she was thrust into the spotlight by milking her divorce. ALL of the sudden, she’s MS. Charity. Before that, she attended fashionable charity events, and donated a dress. YAWN. Other stars have been DONATING their time, money, and placing their well-being in jeopardy for 11 YEARS. I don’t buy Aniston’s act, and that’s my opinion.

  46. Praise St. Angie! says:

oh please…don’t let your dislike of her warp your view so much. she’s been involved with St. Jude’s for a long time, and her divorce is not what prompted her to start her charitable work.

also, how is it an “act”? you’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but said opinion is based on your ASSumption that it’s “an act”.

does that mean that all of Jolie’s humanitarian deeds were “just an act”?

    or Bono’s? or Bullock’s? or Clooney’s?

  47. whatever says:

@Praise. Last year, I was watching E! news and she gave an interview while promoting Love Happens. The reporter asked her if she knew what happened to the little girl she did that commercial with. Aniston said she had no idea what happened to her. Then the reporter had to tell her what happened to the little girl (she survived her bout with cancer). Then, Aniston tried to save face by saying, “That’s great! I’m happy to hear that.” You could tell she was quite ruffled by the question. So, it’s based on an actual interview I saw.

Now, you can go back to saying I’m “warped,” or biased, or I’m a loon, or whatever excuse for her you want to cook up, but you won’t prove a thing to me. That interview says A LOT about her. How hard is it to keep up with a little kid? Send her a card? Visit her? Email? There’s no excuses, in my opinion.

This is also the reason why I dislike MANY celebs and their egocentric, self-glamorizing charity work. Unless, they are digging the trenches, going to the actual 3rd world country that needs help, and have been doing it for 10+ years (before it was SO cool), they should shut it. Aniston is not the ONLY one I dislike here. To me, she’s just an obvious “johnny come lately” jumping on the cool charity train for some obvious good PR. Sorry if you disagree.

  48. gemma says:

The fact is “whatever” I saw the interview, and nothing prooved that she didn’t keep up and it doesn’t happen like you say is happen… You show it as an akward moment whereas it wasn’t…
Even press article, didn’t present the thing as you do! An exemple: http://entertainment.oneindia.in/hollywood/top-stories/scoop/2009/aniston-broke-down-180909.html
And you can find others who are talking about this the same way…
So you just decided to jump to conclusion, but if they wasn’t close even after the commercial thing, the girl wouldn’t give her a message during jen’s latest premiere … If it was just to put the spot light on her and if jen didn’t take care of her, I don’t think that one year after this, Ellie would take the time to send her this message…
So you wanted to see the bad in that but I’m sorry to tell you that is a little bit different from the reality… If the child wasn’t gratefull to jen for her help, do you really think she would send this message?
And even when she was married to brad, she was verry involved, but she always told that she doesn’t want to expose this to magasines…
So really I’m trying to understand how people who doesn’t know her can actually be the one who can be so rude with her, whereas all her close friends (even her ex husband) are all agree to say that she’s one of the sweetest girl in the world…

  49. Praise St. Angie! says:

I didn’t say you were warped, or call you a loon. I implied that your view had been warped (meaning affected) by your bias, which is clear.

you’re basing your entire view of her on an erroneous assumption and ONE interview, of which the accuracy of your description is questionable.

I didn’t see the interview in question and, based on your posts, I’d be wary of taking your word of how it went down.

as I said, you’re entitled to your opinion, but I can’t help but think that it’s tainted.

  50. gemma says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS5ZCPVT1mQ
this is the video of what you were talking about… The way you related is so different of what it is in reality….

  51. whatever says:

@ Gemma. I really can’t understand many of your points. And, those arent the clips I say, so you haven’t proved your point to me. In the clip I saw, she look befuddled and then tried to cover it up by acting “so concerned.” I don’t buy it. She barely did any charity work when she was with Brad that didn’t involve fashionable events or donating dresses. I remember she and Brad were supposed to go to Israel together to support Edward Norton’s charity there (he and Brad were good friends), then she admitted in an interview that she knew nothing about the current situation there and was only doing it for Brad. Esquire magazine lampooned her for that comment, and she cancelled the trip. I really don’t think she’s a sincere person. I can see fake from miles away and she reaks of it to me.

And, I don’t care what people say about her; they may have their reasons for not wanting to publically tangle with her. I do know her ex-roomate and Jay Mohrer have said some nasty things about her.

In any case, I don’t like her. I don’t think she’s talented, I don’t think she’s sincere and I think she’s been using her private life for pr. And, I’m not a fan of those celebs (Brangelina included). I have a right to my opinion, and you fangirls (don’t even try and deny it) can’t convince me otherwise. The only thing you girls are proving is that you are very loyal fans who will buy anything that Jen Aniston is selling to you. Anything.

  52. gemma says:

Yeah you right and all the people who know her and who’s talking about her and what she did, are just liars or have something to hide… You know people who worked with her, people who are friends with her for years… And I’m not talking about 2 or 3 people… But it’s ok you’re right…
For the thing about the interview it’s a little weird that 2 interviews from the same channel, talk about the same thing (wich everytime is supposed to be a surprise for her) and that during the same period of the same year… But i do believe you…
Anyway It’s your point of view, good for you… It’s not a big deal after all
