Gaby Sidibe on Gerard Butler: “I’d hit that. I’m not ashamed.”

2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

Oh my God, this story made my life. In most of the post-Oscar wrap-up, I avoided talking about Gaby Sidibe, just because when Oprah got up to talk about Gaby’s performance in Precious, and Gaby started crying, my heart went out to this girl. I can’t even imagine how overwhelming all of this must be for her, and I didn’t want to the standard dissection of her dress and attitude and stuff from Oscar night, like I would have if she were older and more of an old Hollywood hand. But it looks like Gaby didn’t need my protection, because she’s doing just fine on her own! Apparently, when she was doing a red carpet interview with Billy Bush, she caught sight of Gerard Butler and she told Billy, “I’d hit that.” That’s my girl! What happened after that is so f-cking epic and wonderful, it just makes my day:

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Press Room

Gabourey Sidibe met Gerard Butler for the first time on Saturday night and things didn’t go exactly as she wanted.

“I bumped into him yesterday. I feel like I stepped on his foot,” she said.

But on Sunday, while being interview by Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush on the Oscars red carpet, her second meeting with Gerard became forever memorable.

“He’s kinda sexy,” Gabourey told Billy, as she saw Gerard again, standing to her left, just out of earshot. “I’d hit that.”

And as Gerard leaned in to shake her hand, Billy asked Gabby if he really heard her correctly.

“I kinda said, ‘I’d hit that.’ I’m not ashamed,” she said as Gerard heard her words for the first time, reacting with a shock of delight. “I’d hit that. I’m sorry.”

“I’m here, I’m available,” Gerard said after he composed himself from the proposition from the Best Actress nominee. “Let’s go!”’

“Let’s grab a bottle of champagne and see where the night goes,” Gabourey replied.

You go girl!

Oh my God, Gaby is my sister, for real. Because that is exactly how I would have propositioned Gerard too (in my dreams)! I would have gotten within earshot, and then said to whoever was around, “I would rip that man apart. With. My. Vadge.” And how much do I love Gerard for being such a great sport? You know what? He probably would hit that right back. I wholeheartedly approve of this love match! Wouldn’t that just be the most beautiful thing in the world, if Gerard showed up to The Bounty Hunter premiere with his new girlfriend Gaby Sidibe? I would just die of happiness.

WOW! He is great, I can’t imagine any other celeb handling it better!

  2. ogechi says:

    Hahaha, that’s hilarious.

  3. Rosalee says:

she is adorable, I hope she sticks around for a long time, she’s witty, charming, funny and so talented.

  4. Double Standard says:

Most people would agree that the phrase “I’d hit that” sounds condescending when a man says it about a woman. “Hit” implies nothing of the intimacy and/or pleasure normally associated with sex; instead, it’s like a hit and run. And referring to a person (or her body part) as “that” is just demeaning.

Yet it’s cool when a woman says it? That’s not empowering. That’s stooping to a less-than-human level, and if we’re not careful, we mistakenly believe it’s empowerment.

  5. Rose says:

    She’s so cute and funny.

  6. javelin says:

Ok, this is me officially jumping on the Gabby bandwagon. She seems quite delightful.

Double Standard– language doesn’t always have to be polarizing. If you don’t consider the context of the dialogue you’re not getting the full picture, and in this case the context is obviously a jovial and lighthearted moment of bonding, not a demeaning or empowering interaction. Consider the context when you’re judging connotation.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Maybe he is attractive in person because I just don’t see it. He was only hawt when he did 300.

    Go Gabby!!!

  9. lin234 says:

This may seem a bit jaded but it seems like every year there is one culturally diverse film that grabs the attention of the American public. It usually elevates the popularity of a a few racially diverse actresses for example Zhang Ziyi and Freida Pinto come to mind. The roles that made them famous were both specialized to their ethnicity and culture. Zhang Ziyi went on to make films that all focused on her being Asian and then went back to her original status: starring in films in Asia. I haven’t heard anything from Frieda lately.

From an impartial standpoint, the role that made Gaby famous, was partially due to her weight and ethnicity. Didn’t Jennifer Hudson actually WIN an Oscar but then her next prominent role was playing the sassy sidekick in Sex and the City? Feels like she’s going to be seen as popular until that next movie comes along and she’ll be forgotten. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong.

    @javelin, co-sign

Furthermore, when women subjugate men for the length of all of recorded modern history…like 10, 000 years or so and set up a repetitive paradigm that continously pigeonholes and polarizes men as either sex objects or moral flamekeepers then perhaps what she said will hold the same power.

With that said, she can do better. (Though I shamefully admit, I’d probably would, as well.)

  11. javelin says:

    lin234–
There is some truth to that, but there are also white award-winning actresses like Charlize Theron who haven’t been in anything great lately. Hopefully Hollywood will start creating better roles for talented actresses of all kinds.

  12. ViktoryGin says:

    @lin234

Jaded? Perhaps. Truthful? Yes. I personally don’t operate under the illusion that her current exposure is going to insure future success. It’s hard for conventionally attractive white actress who presumably have better access and marketability. The fact it, for a economic as well as sociological reasons actors of colour are still a novelty and until the mainstream is ready to see them in dynamic leading roles (the rule not the exception) the Academy mime of social evolution is going to continue to be that. They can only really acknowledge what’s out there, and what’s out there is still primarily a rarified club for anglophone whites.

  13. lin234 says:

javelin- Charlize may not have been in anything great lately but her work seems steady. Her roles are usually pretty significant in a movie too.

It feels like she’s the type of person who isn’t out to cash in all at once with one movie after another. She most likely has plenty of money in the bank and has an Oscar already so that it may not be essential that she acts in ground-breaking films. (Just a theory)

Plus, it was imperative that she lose all the weight she gained as fast as she could after Monster. Can you imagine the public scrutiny if she kept the pounds she packed on for Monster? She hasn’t had a movie after her big Oscar win that downplayed her assets. It seems like some gorgeous white women need to downplay their looks in order to be in contention for an Oscar. Completely different circumstances.

Viktory Gin- Yes. Novelty seems to sum it all up. It’s cool for a period of time to jump on that racially diverse bandwagon until something else comes along.

  14. Peach says:

I want to invite Gabby over, make enchiladas, eat popcorn, watch stupid movies and gossip.

And yeah, I’d hit that too. In a second. Go girl.

  15. lucy2 says:

I hope that’s not the case with Gabby, I hope she is able to find some good roles after this and have great success. It may never match the levels of Precious, but I think anyone who can manage to make a go of it in Hollywood is pretty fortunate.

She seems like such a sweet and joyful person, you can’t help but root for her. She’s been having fun with this and enjoying every minute, and her happiness is contagious (take note, Kristen Stewart).

  16. Huma says:

I don’t care for Gerard and don’t really see the appeal, but I have to hand it to him: he’s always been goofy-charming. It’s disarming. I find his reaction hilarious, endearing, and totally in character.

Still don’t see the appeal, though, Kaiser. 😛 Sorry! But hey, more Gerard for you, right?

  17. annie says:

    Awesome on all levels.

  18. Neelyo says:

I fell in love with her on Sunday when she referred to her dress as ‘the money shot’ on the red carpet. And watching her meet Keanu Reeves was delightful. I’ve never seen a show business newcomer so happy, confident and relaxed in my life. And you can tell that she’s charmed most of Hollywood too.

During that stupid opening when all the nominees had to come out like the Von Trapp family, she was the only one of them who had a sense of humor about her introduction.

Haven’t seen the film yet, but I wish her extraordinary good fortune in whatever she does.

  19. Tia C says:

She’s such a cutie. I would’ve hoped she had better taste in men than that. To me he looks like an average, generic looking man, nothing special. I know tons of women think he’s a heartthrob, and they are more than entitled to their opinion, but I personally just don’t see it. He does nothing for me.

  20. Milan says:

She’s an awesome actress, but i have nightmares of her swallowing a panda whole. Followed by Gerard Butler for desert and all we’d have in memorium of gerard after that fateful night, is a loin cloth.

  21. Shannon says:

So many good comments already, I think javelin and lin234 especially hit the nail on the head here 🙂

I love Gabby, and I especially love what she did with her hair. I’m not fond of the color of her dress (although obviously it was designed by someone else for her). I think she’d look far more stunning in a red or cream color than that dull navy blue. An the silver appliqué vines are a bit much. The draping of the dress is very elegant though!

  22. Erin says:

Girl is on a higher plane. She is spectacular.

  23. the truth says:

she needs to get a personal trainer and hit the gym asap.. for health reasons she is wayyyy tooo fattttttttttttt.

  24. su says:

    LOVE Gabby! SO. F-CKIN. MUCH!

  25. ForestW says:

I can’t believe people are getting their grandmother’s underwear in a twist for her saying “I’d Hit That.” She doesn’t mean “hitting” as in a 1950’s housewife cowering in a corner while her husband has a belt. GO to urbandictionary and look it up. But I bet that is below you. And please take Webster’s dictionary out of your butt because I bet your clever & “intelligent” euphemisms are oh so grande. Jesus Marie on roller skates. I imagine it’s her having Gerald Butler in the doggie position whilst spanking his butt. Yes, it isn’t a beautiful image.. it would be much better with you as Gabrielle. 🙂 Or was she supposed to say “I’d tap that.” BUT OH NO! You would get offended for all the hardworking tap dancers out there. “Those poor tap dancers. I would never use such a word because those are such hardworking people and my uncles’ friend’s nephews hairdresser.. blah blah blah..” I am not even a fan of her but i can’t believe people are so black and white, that they don’t understand humor. It’s a joke. Yes, a bit classless but she’s young and that’s how some young people talk. Even college educated ones so please don’t pull out your “I’m young and college educated and don’t say things like that” card.

  26. Sincerity says:

I would love to see Gabby parlay her success into something more consistent or steady such as a talk show. From what I have read, she’s a psychology major and doing a talk show would certainly be a great fit for her. As far as her appearance is concerned, it depends on whether or not she really wants to primarily concentrate on doing films.

Realistically, the roles for African American women are not plentiful; however, that may change depending upon the willingness of producers to bankroll projects that will feature them. In recent years, producers/directors such as Tyler Perry have developed projects that incorporate a much wider spectrum of personalities from the African American community. If this trend increases, the opportunities for African American actresses to showcase their talents will improve.

There’s no sense in Gabby trying to drastically downsize to compete with someone like Halle Berry. She would just become another overlooked women of color. Since she has such a lovely sense of humor, downsizing to be more in step with Queen Latifah would certainly work for her. Queen Latifah is the bomb and you can never have too many women of her caliber in entertainment.

  27. lolo says:

“I would rip that man apart. With. My. Vadge.”

Excuse me?! Not exactly what Gaby said! 😛

  28. GatsbyGal says:

I’d hit that like the fist of an angry god.

  29. Dear Gaby,

    I too, would hit that!

    In the WORST way!

I’d take that man and do things I can’t PRONOUNCE!

And then, I’d make him pancakes.

    ..pancakes..

  30. SpreadLove says:

I saw her on Chelsea Lately and LOVED her. How refreshing is she? She rocks!

  31. snapdragon says:

oh honey…you can do better than that bloated boozebag.

  32. Peanut says:

“I would rip that man apart. With. My. Vadge.” OMG Kaiser… best line EVER!!!! LOL!!

  33. Mairead says:

Ich – I wouldn’t touch him with yours!

Alas, I think what javelin and co are saying are true. But, she could still get solid work in indie films hopefully.

On Charlize not taking roles that downplay her attractiveness since Monster – perhaps, but what she does do is fairly worthy. Has anyone else seen “The Road”? She’s not in it very much, but is very good, and definitely not at all glamourous.

  34. shorty40 says:

I for one am sick of seeing and hearing her already. She’s disgusting, NOT cute at all, and I do NOT find her “amusing” and “adorable”….GROSS.
