Is Keira Knightley’s gown totally ugly/strange or lovely?

laurence_olivier_3_wenn2782131

Here is Keira Knightley walking the red carpet for the Laurence Olivier Theatre awards on Sunday. The Oliviers are like the Tonys, I think. Correct me if I’m wrong, British theatre geeks. Ah, yes, Getty approves: “The Olivier Awards are recognized internationally as the highest honour in British theatre and are considered to be the theatre industry equivalent of the BAFTA Awards for television and film.” So, like the Tonys. Anyway, Keira was nominated for an Supporting Actress Olivier Award for her stage role in The Misanthrope. Keira lost! But she still wore this strange dress to the awards show.

Now, my first reaction when I saw this Erdem dress was “Ew, ugly pattern.” Then I looked at the detailing of the design, and of the fabric, and the dress is growing on me. It’s not one of those dresses where you’re like, “Oh, fabulous!” It’s a dress that makes you think. However, the darting is totally bizarre. Look at how the dress is cut around her bust and her hips! What a f-cked up way to cut a dress. It’s drawing mixed reactions from the press too. The Sun calls it “Unsightly Knightley” while Elle UK declares it “stunning.” I’m somewhere in between.

Meanwhile, as has already been established, Keira is not going to be coming back for the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Guess who they’re getting to replace her? Penelope Cruz! Can you believe this sh-t? Anyway, the NYDN had this interesting little item over the weekend:

The treasure chests on board “Pirates of the Caribbean” may runeth over, but stricter rules apply to bodices. Rob Marshall, director of the fourth installment in the swashbuckling series, has told casting agents in Los Angeles to put out a search for actresses with natural curves only, London’s Daily Mail reports.

The ad specifies, “beautiful female fit models. Must be 5ft 7in-5ft 8in, size 4 or 6, no bigger or smaller. Age 18-25. Must have a lean dancer body. Must have real breasts. Do not submit if you have implants.”

Any actresses who expect to smuggle in some extra booty will have no chance of rocking the boat – applicants will be asked to pass a test that detects false breasts.

Former “Pirates” heroine, Keira Knightley, revealed in the past that crew had a hard time giving her that curvy “18th century whoreish” look.

She says they painted in her cleavage and pulled her bodice tight to shrink her waist and maximize her breasts. It later emerged that Knightley’s assets were enhanced for the movie posters promoting the 2004 action film “King Arthur.”

But the next time we see Jack Sparrow, the lascivious pirate will not be wanting for curves. Penelope Cruz and her hourglass figure will take over the role of Elizabeth Swann from Knightley this summer. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is slated for release in 2011.

[From The NYDN]

Poor Keira. I’ve always thought she was a pretty little thing, but that girl is flat as a pancake, much like Audrey Hepburn, bless her heart. Keira usually has a laugh at her own expense about her boobs, but doesn’t this whole “we need girls with real breasts” seem kind of rude? Like it’s partly directed at Keira? It seems that way to me.

Anyway, here are some more photos from the Olivier Awards… Rachel Weisz, Jude Law and Kim Cattrall were there too (Rachel even won!):

  1. Brooke says:

She kind of looks like hell, which is unusual for her, but I think the dress is lovely.

  2. scotchy says:

i think this dress is a little much and her annoying pouty brat face grates on my nerves.

  3. Mirdeb says:

It’s time for stylist, a better makeup artist and a HAMBURGER!

  4. Steeze says:

i dont think its a dig a Keira. I just think its a story set in the past where implants didnt exist and they want the girls to look somewhat natural…

about the dress… meh. just there really.

  5. scotchy says:

@mirdeb, i think at least ten hamburgers are in order.

  6. gloaming says:

She always looks like she’s gurning when she smiles, much like Kate Winslet.

  7. LolaBella says:

The fabric of the dress is strange. It’s like those Rorschach inkblots where each person sees something else.

    I see Smurfs’ heads.

    One co-worker sees butterflies.

Yet another co-worker sees peoples’ faces.

I like the cut off the dress though.

    Jude Law looks very debonair.

  8. Mairead says:

Love the dress, I think it really suits her and is flattering – hate the hair though, and am not keen on the makeup. I’d say it looks much better in person than in a photo.

That photo of Rachel isn’t the most flattering, she rocked it in other photos I saw.

I quite liked Kim’s dress, but I’d prefer it if she wore tights and that winged eyeliner is trying too hard.

Jude’s hair treatments are coming along nicely – I think he’s getting that procedure done where they take microscopic slivers of hair and skin from the back of the head and transplant it to the top. I’ve seen men here with it done and it looks excellent.

  9. S says:

I like the dress. The make up and hair though…blech.

  10. zzz says:

She is ugly. The dress too.

  11. Novaraen says:

Wait…Penelope Cruz is playing the part of Elizabeth Swann?? wtf? I just thought she would be a new character…oh I hate it when they do this. :((

  12. Tess says:

Ugh, that dress is a walking disaster, a textbook example of a schmatta.

Unattractive print, nasty colors, and unneccessarily complicated.

Rachel W. looks fab. Simple dress, great color.

  13. Anna says:

Wow, they seemingly all wore frumpy dresses that night.

I think it’s so annoying, this whole thing about Keira and her breasts. She is a naturally skinny girl, you can see it in any movie she’s in, even when they try to paint on cleavage. I think she’s absolutely gorgeous the way she is and I actually don’t think she starves herself, as many other young stars do. And I’m sure she didn’t bow out of a 4th Pirates appearance just because her figure didn’t fit what they had in mind. She was probably just sick of it.
What I don’t see is how Penelope Cruz is supposed to take Keira’s place. They are completely different types and also ages! I say leave all these flat-chested women alone, they are beautiful. Just look at Jen Garner or Milla Jovovich. I would die to be with any of them (Keira too) and I usually tend to like femmes.

  14. scotchy says:

i don’t care about her boob size, the fact that most of her acting is done with a pouty face is what i don’t like.
it i personally wish miss pouty face would stop making films .
i don’t think she is an AWFUL actress, i just think she lacks depth and relies on her pout to convey emotion.
i know this is a rant, but for some reason, any film i see her in, just annoys me. it actual ruins otherwise good films for me. arrghhh.
ok ok the dress is alright but she just doesn’t have the edge to make.

  15. hatsumomo says:

I know I’m supposed to find her lovely or a rare kinda beauty, but I just never liked hr. I think Chloe Sevingy is way prettier than she, as far as quirky beauties go..

  16. hatsumomo says:

    And where’s my Gravatar?!?!

  17. Michelle says:

Ok, the dress is not one that I could or would wear but I think it really suits Keira.

  18. bluecat says:

I love it! The more I look at it the more I like it.

  19. Meglet says:

I like the dress and I think it really works on her thin frame, however the hair and makeup are not her best!

  20. Gail says:

What’s even more annoying than Keira’s “pouty face” is Penelope’s ridiculous accent. I cannot sit through an entire movie trying to understand what she is saying. If it’s true she’s the new Elizabeth (ridiculous. completely different women) I will not bee seeing the new Pirates movie. Well, maybe I’ll wait till it’s on DVD so I can fast forward to all the scenes with only Johnny Depp!

  21. scotchy says:

    @gail
    agreed
and that too is my plan..

  22. GC says:

She’s lovely, the dress is interesting, but good God, that girl needs to eat something – STAT!

  23. naye in VA says:

every one is saying they love the dress which is beautiful, but not on her. It needs saomeone with a real chest to make it not look like just a frock. ironic since half of this post is about her not having a chest. she should have chosen something more suitable to her frame

  24. cara says:

dress looks like something a grandma would where. Keira Knightley is so darn skinny to start, whi does she have her face posed like the Olson twins? you know that ‘look at my cheek bone look, yeah I know I’m thin, right?” look

  25. kai says:

I like the dress, but think Keira herself is ugly. I cannot stand that pale skin, dark hair dark eyed waif look, it grosses me out, so pretty much nothing she wears can make her look good IMHO. She also has a really ugly nose, mouth and jaw line, it just doesn’t seem to mesh well together. I often wonder how these mediocre-looking at best actresses get famous, must be the casting couch!

  26. hannah says:

she isn’t replacing keira as elizabeth, but as the main female character. she isn’t elizabeth swan.

as for the no fake boobs thing, i can’t believe they are making people pass a test to check. it seems like harassment. if you can’t tell by looking at them, then that should be good enough. to subject all the female extras to undergo testing seems totally innappropriate.

I agree about cruz’s accent. I don’t understand why her english isn’t better. She has been doing english speaking movies for a long time now.

  27. Sigh. says:

Cruz will NOT be playing Knightley’s character – she will be the daughter of Captain Jack’s nemesis, ANOTHER role.

When they say she’s “replacing” Knightley, they mean another female lead will be in the movie instead.

And I would LOVE to know what kind of “tests” they’ll be conducting for real breasts and who will be administering…

  28. Scout says:

Hate KK’s dress – don’t much like her either. Rachel’s dress doesn’t do anything for her – and the color is horrible – too drab. I think she is pretty, though. My first take is that I like Kim’s dress but agree, she’d do well to put something on her legs at this point – you know, as we age….same for everyone…but still, she looks really pretty!

  29. Sumodo1 says:

Rachel Weisz is dressing more age-appropriately. The last few red carpets, she’s been “mutton dressed as lamb.”

  30. SolitaryAngel says:

It’s a Vomit-Comet dress, she’s bobble-headed, the hair has that just-rolled-out-of-bed “freshness” and the whole thing just doesn’t work for me. She gives me the weirds.

  31. gobo says:

I don’t see it as an insult towards Keira Knightly, I think it’s more likely a precaution taken because breast implants in those corsets are very obviously fake; you can clearly see the outline of the implant and it looks grotesque.

  32. Novaraen says:

Penelope as Blackbeards daughter sounds about right. I was worried…when they said she “replaced” Keira. Whew!

As for implants…not all of them look like two big melons attached to the chest. Trust. What test will they run to check, I wonder? The touchy feely test? Lol…funny thought.

  33. N.D. says:

can’t say it’s beautifull or ugly cause it’s too weird. The whole look is weird. But I still like her, never understood why she annoys some people.

  34. Mairead says:

I think Penélope Cruz is replacing Kiera as the main female character in Pirates, not that she’s going to be Elizabeth Swann.

EDIT – I thought. If that’s the case it’s moronic – why couldn’t Penélope rock a Grace O’Malley type character?

And to those traumatised by Penélope’s accent – aww, diddums 🙄

  35. Eileen Yover says:

She’s ‘meh’ here. Rachel Weisz on the other hand, looks stunning-she always look gorgeous to me.

  36. JC126 says:

Maybe okay for a shirt, or a skirt, not a whole dress.

  37. Mistral says:

Can’t figure out the print! I like the cut, though… I’d like it better if all of the splotches/shapes/whatever were small, instead of “blown up” in places…

  38. Emily says:

@Novaraen, I heard they just have to lie on their back. Real boobies will slide down and out, while fake ones will point up at the ceiling.

I’m more impressed by the “must be size 4-6” thing. Yay no size zeroes!

  39. Sally says:

Dress would be cuter as a mini, with some epic shoes/sandals.

  40. Maritza says:

Keira looks like an old lady with that horrible hairdo and the matronly dress. I can’t stand her pout either! Everyone else looks fantastic.

  41. rtms says:

The dress is lovely, it’s the hairdo that messes everything up. It makes her look like a cancer patient. She should have had it down and around her face.

  42. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

Penelope Cruz, ahhhhgggg. I think she’s grating and overrated. I get so SICK of her cutesy routine.

I’m not a huge fan of Kiera, but she’s a way better actress than Penelope. I also like that she DIDN’T get implants, and imagine the pressure on her to cave in and do that. She made it on talent and I respect her for that.

The backlash against plastic is nearly upon us. Finally.

  43. Kirsten says:

The only thing I’ll give her is “Pretty by British Standards.”

Otherwise she’s NOTHING. They need to stop sending homely girls from the UK to be dressed up as if they’re as smoking as the other ladies of Hollywood.

The Brits need to stop inbreeding.

  44. ViktoryGin says:

Knightley is an attractive woman, but I don’t think that she is going to age well. Her face is so slim and angular, that I think that she’s going to look prematurely haggard. She only 24, and she could pass for 30 easily.

The dress is an eye sore, by the way, and makes her look matronly.

    @Kristen,

    Lay off the insults

  45. Kate says:

I’d love the dress, if it were short (like to the knee)!

  46. Laura says:

she never knows how to dress and most of the time, she doesn’t care <– what i love about her.

  47. TrixC says:

Keira’s dress is bad, but Rachel Weisz’s is worse – such a beautiful woman but the colour does nothing for her.

@Kirsten, forget the British, you just confirmed every negative stereotype about Americans in existence.

  48. Orangejulius says:

@ Kirsten….’as if they’re as smoking as the other ladies of Hollywood’….you mean the plastic-titted, nose-jobbed, liposuctioned ones?

  49. daluraemoviegoer says:

    @ Kristen
Okay, no need to take your frustration in real life out on innocent Brits

  50. Zelda says:

In THEORY I love the dress. It is very classy and 1940’s.
    In REALITY….something isn’t working.

I think she just needs the curves. pin-thin ladies look so wonderful in a lot of things (flapper-syle, anyone?), but I think this is a number for an hourglass shape.

  51. NicoleAM says:

    KK is gorgeous!

  52. blonk says:

That’s a pretty psychodelic print, for sure.

She’s still a cutie but I can see that’s changing too.

Oh well. Say goodbye to youth.

  53. saywat says:

I have never got the appeal of Keira Knightley. Her nose and pouty lip annoys me to no end (and it seems like she always force her self to smile like that), as does Penelope Cruz’s accent.

  54. Nic says:

To me, the problem with Keira Knightley is not her look, but her constant pose and her talent as an actress (even though awards or nominations)is a myth. She is infinitely overrated.
