Prince Harry’s spox: Tina Brown lies, Harry never called Archie ‘my little African child’

It’s so funny to see how much the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s communications team has dramatically changed strategies over the course of the past year. They are no longer letting stupid, evil and defamatory stories fester out here unchallenged. The Sussexes now respond quickly, even to smaller, dumber stories. This week featured a particularly stupid one. Tina Brown appeared on Katie Couric’s YouTube show and the conversation turned to Prince Harry. Tina claimed that she had lunch with Jane Goodall shortly before Goodall’s death on October 1, and that Goodall spoke about her friendship with Harry. These are Tina’s words: “She was one of the only people outside the family that went to see Archie when he was born. And Harry said, ‘This is my little African child.’ It’s going to be my child who essentially… you know… wild child, essentially… they were going to have this time together living a life off the grid as it were. She said she was absolutely stunned when he chose the life that he did.” As I said yesterday, I did not believe that Harry would say that to Jane Goodall, nor do I believe that Goodall would have said that to Tina Brown. Well, Harry’s spokesperson got on top of the story immediately:

Prince Harry told primatologist Jane Goodall that his son Prince Archie was “my little African child” after he was born, according to the former magazine editor Tina Brown. Brown told Katie Couric’s YouTube show she went for lunch with Goodall before the scientist’s death in October, and the subject of Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal exit came up. Goodall was a friend of the couple and was already known to have visited them after Archie’s birth, but Brown’s account of what was discussed had not been made public previously.

A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said: “The Duke of Sussex has never said anything remotely resembling what is being claimed. Tina Brown knows exactly what she’s doing by inventing these words and attributing them to a highly respected woman who is deceased and unable to correct the record.“

[From Newsweek]

Tina Brown is clearly still a British tabloid operative, because this is one of the tabloids’ favorite things: announcing that dead people speak from the grave about how much they hated Harry and Meghan. “Queen Elizabeth II and all of her dead associates said horrible things about Harry & Meghan” is basically a weekly feature of the Daily Mail, the Times and the Telegraph at this point. I’m sure they’re gearing up to say that the late Duchess of Kent also said some sh-t about the Sussexes. Anyway, it was obvious that Tina Brown was talking out of her colonizer ass, but it’s still good to see Harry shut it down. Why on earth would Harry have told Jane Damn Goodall “this is my African child??”

Just this morning, Tom Sykes got an exclusive for his Royalist Substack – Tina Brown commenting on Harry’s denial, with Sussex sources reacting to Brown as well:

Tina Brown stood by her comment, however, telling The Royalist today: “On Katie Couric’s podcast on Wednesday the 17th, I recounted what Jane Goodall said to me in June of this year about Prince Harry. She remembered affectionately Harry saying when Archie was born, “I want you to come and meet my African Child.” She actually said “Africa child”, but I was speaking too quickly. Aside from that inadvertent mistake, everything else in Ms. Goodall’s conversation with me, I rendered accurately.”

A source in Harry’s camp brushed off Brown’s clarification, saying, “Doubling down, but now clarifying ‘inadvertent mistakes’. What else is she getting wrong?”

In the podcast, Brown framed the comment in the context of royal expectations that Harry might leave the family, saying: “I’m told that the Queen always thought that Harry would go off and want to be out of the royal family. But they all expected him to go to Africa and become a person who focused on conservation of animals in Africa and live a kind of off-the-grid life. Nobody expected him to go to Montecito and live the opposite of the off-the-grid life, which is the celebrity life. And I don’t think that Harry thought he was going to do that either.”

A source in Harry’s camp said today: “He didn’t say it. It’s not fair on Harry but it’s also not fair on Jane Goodall, because Jane is not around to be able to confirm it. It feels like (Brown) is now rowing back on it anyway.”

[From The Royalist Substack]

Brown is now claiming that Jane Goodall quoted Harry as saying “My Africa Child” – please, all of this is bullsh-t. Harry didn’t say it to Jane Goodall, and I’m sure Goodall didn’t say it to Tina Brown. In my opinion, this is Brown putting some unhinged spin on something which was probably very innocent, like Harry talking to Goodall about taking his wife and son to Botswana, or telling Dr. Goodall that he didn’t want Archie to grow up in the neglectful, abusive royal world.

I’m at the point of questioning whether she had lunch with Jane Goddall at all. But yeah if it was just an ” inadvertent” slip of the tongue why didn’t she clear it up yesterday when it was featured in numerous newspapers and magazine articles? If she knew that that wasn’t what she meant to say, she would have cleared it up before Harry did. She didn’t think he was going to say anything to clarify.

It doesn’t matter how long it is these people still operate under that old Royal playbook. That people will believe anything that they say, and if they operate at some sort of Royal whisperer to explain and give you insight into people that can’t come direct from the horse’s mouth. That they won’t be corrected publicly, and that they can get scoops to offset negative stories on to other people.

    • Beth says:

And why would Harry say ‘Africa child’ when plans to live in South Africa (possibly Cape Town) half the year, as agreed by QEII, were scuppered for good before Archie was born? All that off grid stuff is pure Tina Brown nonsense. But she’s bitten off more than she can chew with the Sussexes’ new comms people and strategy. I’ve heard that Liam McGuire, based here in the UK, is quite the operator. Military and Invictus background 😁

  2. wolfmamma says:

Despicable person. Your karma is ripening.

    • TheFarmer'sWife says:

Why on earth would Jane Goodall have lunch with that woman? People do strike up some outwardly odd friendships, but I can’t imagine those two having much in common. Besides, I doubt Jane would spill tea to anyone.

      • Mac says:

I don’t believe the meeting ever took place. And since Jane isn’t here to defend herself, Brown is free to lie her a$$ off.

  3. Maxine Branch says:

Did not sound like anything Harry would say re his children. Definitely sounds like something that geriatric Brown would put out there. From what I have read, she attributed a lot of nonsense to Princess Diana from one lunch after her death. Tina Brown had her time, now she needs to stay in her lane. This generation have a very low tolerance for her type of royalist nonsense. Happy to see such a quick response from team Sussex.

  4. Alex Can says:

Jane Goodall was as close to an angel on earth as there’ll ever be, and I don’t believe for one second she would have talked to Tina Brown, a gossip columnist, about Prince Harry. Just ludicrous. TB is trashy, as if.

  5. 2131Jan says:

I will *never*, for the life of me, understand this collective psychotic, racist, xenophobic hatred directed at Meghan, not to the extent this has taken on. It’s like a nuclear blast of hate, just for existing and *daring* to marry the man she fell in love with, and who fell head over heels in love with her. They got what they wanted: they drove the little family out of the entire continent, (not just the country!); they are living thousands of miles away…and yet, it’s still not enough. It’s an unhinged, unhealthy, and insane obsession that I will never understand.

    • Christine says:

Well said. I have never seen anything like the industry of pure hatred that has sprung up to destroy a woman who just fell in love. Fans of Harry should be thrilled for him. He actually broke the cycle of extreme dysfunction that permeates all of the relationships in the Windsor “family”.

Instead of being happy for him, an entire movement to destroy the love of his life and mother of his children, FOR PROFIT, has become one of the most hate fueled things I have ever witnessed. All for a woman who seems like a lovely human being. Her adoration for Harry should be enough, but as we’ve seen, none of these people really cared about Harry at all in the first place. He is completely disposable to them, and Meghan was never even a human being to them in the first place. It’s stunning.

    • Gabby says:

Meghan stole their favorite prince, who apparently was the keystone of their delusion of greatness. The harassment will continue until she sends him back, alone of course.

  6. Penny4urThots says:

It’s just bash it crazy to makeup lies about a dead woman telling you something that was never said. Good for Harry for calling out this lady and her lies. Gross behavior.

  7. jais says:

TFG they are calling TB out. Her takes are always full of misogyny racism and colonialism. She’s no different than Bowers or Malone. How much has she said about Diana that was a lie?

  8. Elle says:

If you’re going to make something up, at least make it believable or interesting? Like “Harry told Goodall that ever since moving to America, he can’t get enough of cheap American ketchup.” “Harry, who has become of a bit of an avid birdwatcher, recently discovered an injured [rare California bird], and when he realized he needed help, he called California Fish and Wildlife Services.” “Despite his fame, Harry loves going to the bowling alley and has even joined a league. We hear he isn’t very good, but some of his teammates are giving him tips on how to improve his game.”

I’d believe any of those stories. Not “my African child.”

  9. Amy Bee says:

Yeah, she made up the story and now realizing that what she said was also racist she’s trying to clean it up. I don’t think she expected Harry to clap back and I’m glad he did. She’s been getting away with lies for decades now and I hope she stops talking about Harry and Meghan from now on.

    • jais says:

She may stop with the outright absurd lies but doubtful she’ll stop talking about Harry and especially Meghan. She might even be nastier now. But at least she’s been called out for making up stories now, especially about dead women.

  10. Ginger says:

The fact that Tina is kind of backtracking is proof that she knew what she was saying was a lie. I’m glad no one bought this ridiculous story. It’s clear she wanted Harry and Meghan supporters to go after Harry.

  11. Seraphina says:

This says more about the character of Tina Brown than anything else. It speaks volumes. We see you Tina for who and what you are 👀

  12. NoBS Please says:

Is it just me or are the hateful royalist nutjobs becoming bolder in their defamation of Harry and Meghan?

This year we’ve had Harry accused of racism and misogynoir, Meghan accused of theft, Doria Ragland accused of being an ex-con, what next???

It’s like they can’t knock Harry and Meghan down with their criticisms of what they do, so they are making up more and more extreme attacks knowing that some of it will stick with people who aren’t paying attention (and let’s face it, that’s most people).

It’s definitely good that M&H have a comms team that’s on the ball.

People should also bombard Ofcom and Ipso with complaints every time this happens.

    • jais says:

      Shades of desperation right?

    • Happy Camper says:

It’s not just you, the attacks are definitely more frequent and desperate at the moment. This seems to happen when the Windsors want to distract from something else. I suspect the “something else” is the release of the Epstein files.

  13. Sophia says:

They need to keep this quick response time on the bullshit claims. It’s hilarious to watch these people scramble to try and back track without admitting they are making it up.

  14. Eurydice says:

I’m still stuck on – This is what she came away with after a lunch with Jane Goodall? Like, “Never mind your 6 decades of groundbreaking work. What do think about Harry?”

    • jais says:

      I mean it’s telling right?

    • Christine says:

This. JFC, to defame Jane Goodall in this way, of all of the people.

    • Mairzy Doats says:

Bingo! She’s a fascinating woman with lots to talk about. Her interview on Julia Louis Dreyfus’s podcast Wiser Than Me is wonderful.

      • kirk says:

Thanks for the notice on Julia Loius Dreyfus’s podcast episode with Jane Goodall. It was quite interesting. It was also nice to listen to people talking about actual facts and their honest feelings, rather than TB’s made up mumbo jumbo

  15. windyriver says:

Another idiot heard from. These people better start reading the room, because the rapid, pro-active responses by the Sussex team to the several recent incidents we’ve discussed here shows they’re not messing around. It’s especially interesting in light of their foundation’s name change and looks like part of a larger plan, to actively defend their personal reputations, and protect the reputation of their growing and evolving business interests. If people continue to FA, someone is going to eventully FO the hard way, with more than just correspondence from the Sussex lawyers.

    • windyriver says:

ETA: Should have said “evolving business and charitable interests” above.

Also, that picture of Harry and Archie above has always been one of my favorites. For anyone that doesn’t remember, Archie’s hat was made by a very interesting knitting collective in NZ called Make Give Live. For each item purchased, a second one is given to a local child in need.

      • Joanne says:

I love that picture of Harry and Archie because it has Brentwood Bay in the background. That’s when Harry, Meghan and Archie were staying in North Saanich on Vancouver Island in Canada. That’s where I live.

      • MY3CENTS says:

In that photo he looks so much like his grandmother Doria. Something about the eyes, mouth, nose. Such a cute photo.

      • windyriver says:

@Joanne – my sister and I did a tour of Western Canada last summer. Unbelievably beautiful area. Spent a couple of days in Victoria, then took the ferry from the island to get across to head to Whistler. I liked Victoria more than Vancouver, actually. It was a bus tour, so we didn’t get to see more of the island than the road to the ferry, but the view behind Harry brings back memories!

  16. Brassy Rebel says:

Jane Goodall in Heaven: I do so wish I never had lunch with that trashy person but I did so only out of politeness.

  17. QuiteContrary says:

Tina, you’re going to trip over yourself in your backtracking.
    I loathe that racist has-been.

  18. L4Frimaire says:

All this woman does now is gossip about Meghan and Harry. She needs to shut up with her lies and move on to something else. People like Brown thought they can say anything about the Sussexes with no pushback, but that’s no longer the case. Now she’s backpedaling and trying to reframe the context because she was trying to be malicious. Now it’s an innocent thing. What a liar. It’s obvious Harry finds her irritating and he’s had enough of her bullsh*t.

  19. bisynaptic says:

I much prefer the new communications strategy.
Need to remember to never have lunch with Tina Brown, lest I be missed quoted, straight out of the most racist playbook, after I’m dead.

  20. Tessa says:

Brown blatantly lied about what Diana “said” to her mother during the engagement. Brown claimed Frances Shand Kydd asked Diana if she loved the Prince for himself or for “who he was.” And Brown claims Diana “said” What’s the difference. Brown ignored an at length interview with Shand Kydd by a writer–who based her book on these interviews. Shand Kydd herself reported that it was “time” for Diana to marry and never really talked to Diana indicating any misgivings. Brown’s source was “someone” who “spoke to” Frances. Not Frances herself. She was spinning it that Diana “married Charles for the title.” In fact, Diana was too good for Charles. And Brown does not dwell on Charles being turned down by women he was courting, and at least two other women turned down his proposal. I think Brown wants a title from Charles. Also Brown had no real sources for her book, and even “channeled” Diana by wearing a hairdo of Diana’s for the book jacket.

  21. Mrs. Smith says:

To me, another tell that this is bullsh*t is that this supposed lunch happened in June. There is no way someone like Tina Brown would keep something like this a secret for 6 whole months. We all know she would have worked this info into an interview or column much, much sooner if it were true and she’s had lots of time since Jane’s passing on October 1.

  22. Darkwing Duck says:

When Archie was born very few people in the UK even know that there existed a place called Montecito and now they toss it around as a shorthand like, “of course, *Montecito*.” They *created* the concept of a ‘Montecito’ lifestyle, at least how exists in the UK (though I’m not sure it means anything in relation to anyone but Harry and Meghan… they pretty much used to believe every celebrity in California just lived in ‘Hollywood’) to have a go at him in the first place just like they created ‘working royal’.

Why would it surprise Queen Elizabeth, or Charles, that Harry had to go somewhere where he could earn money and have security since they refused to support him financially? The man had to pay security for himself, his wife and son so it’s not a question of “Oh, I guess he didn’t want the simple life after all”.

Elizabeth and Charles were/are both surrounded by freeloaders and were/are inveterate freeloaders themselves- they were counting on Harry not being able to support himself.

And doesn’t this sort of contradict the endless briefing about how the Sussexes were secretly setting up deals like Tubi and Oprah while in the UK? I think the only thing that genuinely surprised, now worries, them is that Meghan and Harry were 100% being for real about their commitment to doing good. For the Windsors, that’s a burden they need to be seen doing to justify income and privilege and the last thing they need is someone now making it very obvious that if it’s something you really consider your sacred duty, or if you are just a good person, you can In fact do without being funded by the public purse or family fortune. In the time since Andrew stepped back has he done any volunteer work off his own back? What is stopping him apart from the fact he would no longer get anything in return? Yet we are expected to believe that the others do it out of the goodness of their own hearts.

  23. L4Frimaire says:

I listened to this excerpt and I genuinely wonder what version of Harry is Brown talking about because nothing she said sounds remotely like him. She actually sounds a bit crazy when talking about him. She seriously thinks he was gonna live off the grid? In some mountain shack somewhere watching over wildebeest? He has a so-called “celebrity“ life because he is one of the most famous men in the world and he’s not shrinking away or hiding. She tries to justify her dislike of Meghan by some vague nonsense about staff turnover, even though she has no idea. Brown is a hater who is still crying over the fact Harry isn’t there to prop up William and never will. “ African child” 🙄. Is she serious?! She pretends to be some insider who has zero access and is just fed Royal rage talking points. I think when the Tom Markle fiasco blew up in their faces and Malone had to eat crow and apologize for lying about Doria, they thought they’d try another attack mode and the Sussexes just aren’t having it.

    • kirk says:

The only time Jane Goodall used the term “off the grid” is when she was advocating for renewable energy, as in 10/9/2017 Scientific American: “What we have to do, which is of great importance, is to stop pandering to the fossil fuel industry and get onto clean, green energy. America could be basically ‘off the grid’ by now.”

She never referred to her home in Gombe as being “off the grid.” She still preferred the “warm golden lights of candles” even after having small solar panels powering LED lights installed (Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots USA). Other people used the term in referring to her – this sounds like a Tina Brown manufacture.

  24. slippers4life says:

They never had lunch together. The maximum that may have happened is that Tina Brown stalked Jane Goodall and snuck into a restaurant where she was eating near her all creepy like

  25. kirk says:

There’s so much wrong with this stupid storyline, I barely know where to start…

    A. Katie Couric, author of the trash-talking 2021 ‘Going There’ in which she said ‘Prince Harry seemed to “ooze” cigarettes and alcohol from “every pore,” is likely far more racist than she’d like anyone to know. Remember when she sassed Denzel Washington (2004) — I mean, ‘didn’t he agree that “Hollywood folks should stick to acting and not voice political opinions,” (i.e. saying he shouldn’t have 1st Amendment rights)? When he rightly stood up for himself, poor little Katie was left feeling “shaken” and “scared” by DW because she didn’t think she did anything wrong, blaming DW for a “weirdly uncalled for” reaction to her stupid query 🙄. Remember how Katie stuck up for sexual abuser (and probable rapist) Matt Lauer far more completely and far longer than any of her other female cohort at NBC — poor little newsie Katie, she just had no clue! To her, it felt “heartless to abandon” the “decent man” Lauer. How could she possibly have known about his abuse 🙄 ? Since Katie is a shameless self-promoter, I could see somebody getting stuck with her on a panel. But I see no reason to pay attention to Katie at all unless she’s attached herself to, and intruded on, someone else who’s more credible and worthwhile.

    B. Tina Brown, the 80s-90s magazine editor, hooked up with Harvey Weinstein to launch ‘Talk Media’ empire that died following the 9/11 attacks, burning through some $50M in the process. Tina wrote a book about Princess Diana, as a ‘friend’ (apparently leveraging a single “lunch” date into a relationship), then another ‘palace intrigue’ type book about BRFCo – but as everyone knows, “You can make up anything about the royal family and it will be printed as fact…Some of the gossip, as in all books of this sort, is grossly implausible” (Hensher, Spectator, April 2022). She also burned through some $100M in hooking up with Barry Diller / IAC Media for a combi Daily Beast / Newsweek media venture despite her best efforts to grab readers’ attentions with stunts like a cover of back-from-the-dead Princess Diana. Fake Feminist Tina Brown then turned her hand to the “conferences” busine$$, geared to “women in the world” — what a concept! As Michael Wolff tells it, Brown’s business is “about congratulating influential and powerful women, who can then be counted on to make their associates and employees pay for tickets; and then to have sponsors, who might hope to do business with the powerful and influential, cough up for some signage and proximity to celebrities. The media business and the PR and promotional business have always had obvious crossover points, but it might seem here that Brown has wholly turned into a flack” (USA Today Feb 8, 2015). Too bad for TB the pandemic nailed that conferences coffin shut. And too bad for TB she can’t fake being a feminist while screeching about Meghan nonstop.

    C. Katie Couric + Tina Brown. Talked about Jane Goodall. Why? Neither of this pair is known for traits that describe Jane Goodall – climate activist, communitarian, conservationist, curiosity, empathy, environmentalist, immersion, inspiration, mentoring, patience, peacemaker, political communicator, scientific observation. And supposedly TB claimed to have had “lunch” with Goodall — talk about “grossly implausible.”

    D. Jane Goodall had been a vegetarian since the late 1960s, and adopted a vegan diet in 2015. So where did they eat when Tina Brown supposedly had “lunch” with her? Before Goodall died, she was still traveling up to 300 days a year, speaking out about climate change and conservation. In June 2025 specifically, she spoke at SXSW London on June 5, and from June 12-14 was in Japan. So, when, exactly, did this famous Tina Brown “lunch” occur? There is no plausible reason why Jane Goodall would socialize with someone as uncharitable as Tina Brown, when she could have lunch with someone like Leo DeCaprio who gave her institute $1M+. How much, if any, did TB donate to further Goodall research?

What did Goodall eat? When did the “lunch” happen? Where did the “lunch” happen? Why hasn’t anybody seen any pictures of this famous person out “lunching” with a tabloid journalist?

No receipts. No pix. Didn’t happen.

  26. Monika says:

I do not believe that Harry said anything remotely like this and Tina Brown had already to detract what was said according to her.

However I found the second part very interesting as well if it is true. And this is a big IF. Tina Brown’s “I’m told…….” (who told Tina Brown) does not leave me with a lot of confidence that Tina Brown’s claim is true. However if Tina Brown’s “I ‘m told that the Queen always thought that Harry would go off and want to be out of the royal family.” is true this blows the narrative that Harry and Meghan leaving the royal life was all Meghan’s fault out off the water. It confirms that the royal family knew that Harry was absolutely unhappy with his life and was looking for a way out even before he met Meghan.
And the other part of these claims “But they (the rest of the family) all expected him (Harry) to go to Africa and become a person who focused on conservation of animals in Africa and live a kind of off-the-grid life.” is probably the left behind royals wet dream. Imo the left behind royals hoped that Harry and his family disappearing in the sunset to never been seen or heard off again, leaving the control of the narrative to the left behind royals and their PR machine. I am so happy that Harry and Meghan did not do that and that Harry and Meghan claimed their position and told their side of the story.

  27. jferber says:

I would actually bet my life on who is the liar, Tina Brown or Prince Harry. And the liar is not Prince Harry.
