Miss Piggy storms out of interview after rude questions about aging: I am done

Welcome to February, where Hollywood heavyweight Bugs Bunny is Star of the Month on TCM as he and his fellow Looney Tunes make their new TV home there (at last). But wait, there’s more good news! Of the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational variety! Yes my friends, not only are Oscar winners Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence working on a Miss Piggy movie with Tony winner Cole Escola, but on Wednesday we get to see the whole gang on ABC/Disney+ in a one-off The Muppet Show special produced by Seth Rogen (arguably a human-muppet hybrid himself). I’m throwing my hands up in the air a la Kermit the Frog and saying “Yaaaayyyy!”

There’s just been one bit of negativity leading up to Wednesday’s show, to do with journalists totally blanking on the appropriate way to treat a bonafide star. You’ll recall that last month, W Magazine’s Lynn Hirschberg committed the mortal sin of asking Emma Stone — on camera! — if Emma would be playing Miss Piggy in the aforementioned film she’s working on. Emma reacted as any sane person would, with righteous indignation and the confirmation that Miss Piggy will be playing Miss Piggy, thankyouverymuch. Well, now we have another incident: reporter Taryn Ryder of Yahoo’s Unapologetically series had the privilege of interviewing Miss Piggy directly, then had the nerve to ask her questions about AGING. Our favorite pig of the silver screen was NOT having it, and clapped back with (I’m paraphrasing), “Excuse you, moi doesn’t age.” The conversation pretty much devolved from there.

People love to call women “too much.” When did you realize “too much” was actually your superpower?
That’s news to me, because mostly they’ve told me it’s a problem. But sure, let’s reframe it. I like that.

What’s the biggest misconception people still have about confidence, especially when it comes in pink, glitter and heels?
Oh, well, that they’re not me, and they think they can wear it. You know, I mean, that’s the biggest problem right there.

You’ve never apologized for loving glamor. How has your relationship with beauty and aging evolved, if at all?
Well, my relationship with aging hasn’t changed because I haven’t aged, and I’m still very, very beautiful. Thank you.

That is accurate. You’ve always used fashion as a form of power. What should people understand about dressing boldly?
Well, as long as they’re not wearing what I’m wearing, I encourage it. Yeah, go for it.

What’s the most powerful no you’ve ever said in your career?
The most powerful no? Well, I would say any no that is accompanied by a fist in the face would be my most powerful no. Yeah.

What is one thing you refuse to apologize for in this season of life?
I’m sorry. One thing? Doesn’t matter the season, this pig doesn’t apologize for anything.

You’ve always been your own star. What is your advice for loving someone without shrinking yourself?
Well, that is a very good question. Just think about how much they love you and all the reasons why they’re right about that. Was that a good answer? That’s a good question.

That’s a great answer. What gives Miss Piggy the ick?
Ironically, press junkets. Though I have to say, this interview has been one of the least ick of all the interviews so far.

What is one thing you’re currently obsessed with for no good reason?
Oh, there’s always a reason. Let me see — my career, my looks. My IMDB star major rating. Did I already say my career? Yeah, I did, didn’t I?

What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
I turned 20!

What is something you wish you had appreciated in your 20s?
Is this a trick question? Because I just said.

Don’t worry, these are just our rapid-fire questions; we ask everybody. You look fantastic, I must say.
Thank you. Thank you.

What is something you love about yourself now that maybe you didn’t when you were younger?
You were going to say, “When you were in your 20s,” weren’t you?

I was. You’re right. I changed it.
You were going to say that. I know. I can tell. You know what? I take back what I said. This is a very ick interview, and I am done. Thank you, everybody.

[From Yahoo! Life]

Justice for Miss Piggy! I mean, really! How could anyone look at that supple, succulent porcine face and think of anything other than timeless beauty? I was duly impressed (but not surprised!) that Miss Piggy was able to redirect in a split second with her answer to the offending question, slipping in at the end, “I’m still very, very beautiful. Thank you.” It reminded me of advice my father used to share: when in doubt on what to say, say “thank you.” Not that Miss Piggy was in doubt here; if one thing comes through from this interview, it’s that Miss Piggy is a pig who knows what she thinks and knows that what she thinks also happens to be what’s RIGHT! And what’s right is that the Muppets are returning to TV! The trailer looks great — Miss Piggy in a Gloria Swanson-Sunset Boulevard turban? Yes please! — and is already getting great reviews. It’s time to get things started!

Her beauty is unmatched. My only issue with Miss Piggy is that she puts her back into her punches a little too much. She’s gonna pull a muscle if she keeps that up.

  6. JENNIFER says:

Nah, let’s be honest, Miss Piggy came ready for war. She was combative right from the jump!

I was today years old when I realized Miss Piggy and Mariah Carey give the same energy. Divas. We love them.
