Princess Sofia on meeting Jeffrey Epstein: ‘I met him in a few social contexts’

Last year, Sweden’s Princess Sofia issued not one but two statements about meeting Jeffrey Epstein. They met, according to Sofia and Sweden’s royal palace, a “few times in 2005.” They later clarified that Sofia only met Epstein in “social settings.” The reporting around this was interesting, because it appeared as if Sofia’s mentor Barbro Ehnbom was really trying to put Sofia in front of Epstein around the mid-00s. Ehnbom appears in the Epstein Files, and they seemed to communicate with some frequency. In 2010, Ehnbom likely sent a photo of Sofia to Epstein and Ehnbom gave Epstein an update on what Sofia was up to. To be clear, there’s nothing beyond all of this, at least from what I’ve seen – within the files, Sofia is being spoken of secondhand, she’s not actually in communication with Epstein at any point, nor has anyone confirmed anything beyond the official palace line. Well, Sofia came out this week and spoke to Swedish journalists on the street as she headed to an event.

Sweden’s Princess Sofia has spoken publicly for the first time about reports linking her to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, saying she met him only briefly many years ago. She addressed the matter while attending the Ctrl + Rights Youth Summit in Stockholm, an annual event held in connection with Safe Internet Day that focuses on safe internet use and digital rights for children.

“I met him in a few social contexts. Fortunately, it was just that,” the Princess said on Tuesday, translated from Swedish to English. “When I read about the terrible crimes he committed against young women today, I am grateful that I had no further contact with him afterwards.” She added, “My thoughts go out to all the victims. I hope there will be justice in this.”

The Swedish royal court previously confirmed that Princess Sofia was introduced to Epstein on several occasions during her time in the United States before her marriage to Prince Carl Philip, the son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. In December, the Swedish outlet Dagens Nyheter published emails between Epstein and Swedish financier Barbro Ehnbom suggesting Epstein was introduced to Sofia when she was in her 20s. The evening newspaper Expressen also published a group photo that Ehnbom allegedly sent to Epstein on his birthday in 2008, showing Sofia among four women.

“No one can be expected to remember every person they have encountered throughout their life; however, Princess Sofia recalls meeting Epstein on a few occasions about 20 years ago. We wish to clarify that these meetings took place in social settings, such as at a restaurant and a movie premiere,” the Swedish Royal Court wrote in a statement at the time. “Reports that the Princess received help from Epstein with acting lessons or with a visa to the United States are incorrect. The Princess has never been dependent on him in any way, nor has she had any contact with him for the past 20 years.”

[From Town & Country]

At this point, I think it’s very likely that Sofia narrowly avoided being trafficked to or by Epstein. Whether she got creeped out by him or whether she just had other things going on in her life, she IS lucky to get out of that whole scene. Epstein and his associates were rampantly preying on vulnerable young women and girls throughout the ‘00s, especially immigrants who needed “help” with visas.

It sure sounds like Epstein had her in his sights, and she is extremely lucky to have not been one of his victims.

  2. YankeeDoodles says:

The extra special creep factor is that her “mentor’ is another woman, just like Ghislaine, which may not leap off the page if you don’t know a bit about the story. But her older woman friend was likely dangling her like a pimp. I mean….. JFC. Having said that, the King of Sweden had a notorious addiction to strip clubs and escorts, it would seem, so the family isn’t exactly a stranger to controversy. Which makes Sofia’s story all the more affecting — it’s possible someone imagined she was only being recruited into the Royal harem. I recall a lot of people were surprised when they actually married, like, she was just supposed to be a fling. A bit like the way William was outraged by Harry’s choice actually to marry Meghan, instead of just using her for recreational encounters. Ick.

This was a good response and she was indeed lucky that her association with Esptein didn’t go any further. I’m sure she feels some betrayal that her mentor was willing to serve her up to Esptein.

  4. Tiny says:

    I’m sure it went further.
    3M more docs out there.
    More apologies.

It must not have been easy for Sofia to speak to journalists, and I admire her for that. She must have been shocked at the thought of what could have happened to her; they clearly thought of her as a potential victim. All the questions and press attention should be directed to her mentor, Barbro, and not to the girls who trusted her.

    • Lauren says:

Agreed, Barbro is who actually want to hear from and who people should be questioning. Did any of the other girls she “mentored” end up being victims of trafficking?

  6. Tis True, Tis True says:

I think people need to realize that Epstein worked on many levels. Yes, there is the horrific trafficking of both underaged and adult women. He just saw himself as providing what powerful men wanted. If someone wanted a wife, Epstein probably kept a mental roster of women like Sophia, who had too much social capital to traffic, to set up on blind dates with these men. If there was something he wanted from you, he’d figure out what you wanted and get it for you. That he had no limits to what he was willing to do is what made him so evil. Not to mention his own depravity.

We have barely begun to figure out what actually was going on here.

  7. Lauren says:

With no insight into the Swedish Royal Family it’s hard to know how much credit to give the family members and how much to give their staff but from a PR perspective this was handled beautifully. I’m often impressed with how professional the SRF is especially in comparison to the out of touch and frankly incompetent Brits.

  8. Lauren says:

Also Q Silvia is a major campaigner against child trafficking and abuse, she founded World Childhood which works to “end the sexual abuse and exploitation”. If it turns out the family had anything to do with Epstein I can only imagine how damaging that would be

    • Loretta says:

It was revealed weeks ago that one of the World Childhood executives was not only in touch with Epstein but also went to his island in 2012.

In his sights indeed. This reminded me, Kate Beckinsale had an ig story yesterday of being offered up to Prince Andrew by Fergie! It started at an event where Fergie was telling her “my girls want her as a stepmom”… Then awhile later, someone somewhere manipulated the host of a party she was attending to request her to come early… when she did show up, Prince Andrew there waiting! Freaky. She talked about being thankful she had an upbringing w friends/family around her to quickly realise she was being played to her great discomfort. I no notice today the posts are wiped from her acct.

  10. Aurelia says:

She sure as hell got a yoga studio bought for her in nyc. I’m sure she’s not completely innocent.
