In the Epstein File drops last year and this year, dozens of public figures saw their years-long communications with Jeffrey Epstein suddenly out in the public sphere. One of those public figures? Norway’s Princess Mette-Marit, wife of Crown Prince Haakon. When Epstein was arrested in 2019, it came out that Mette-Marit had “met” him several times over the years, even after his 2008 plea deal. Well, the emails revealed more of their relationship – she was constantly visiting him and emailing him throughout the 2010s, and even when she was warned to end the relationship, she did not. She has issued three separate apologies for the relationship with Epstein, each one coming after some new information was revealed. This latest chapter comes at a horrible time for the Norwegian royals, given that Mette-Marit’s son Marius is a violent and serial sexual predator and general psycho who has been on trial for the past six weeks or so. Plus, Mette-Marit has significant health issues and she’s awaiting a lung transplant. Well, now Mette-Marit and Haakon have sat down for a television interview in which she once again tries to explain her relationship with Epstein.
Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has told national TV that she wishes she had never met late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, breaking seven weeks of silence after the extent of her contacts with him emerged.
“I feel so manipulated, and when you are manipulated, you don’t realise it from the start,” Mette-Marit said in a 20-minute interview in which she was often on the verge of tears. Seven weeks ago, Norwegians discovered that the crown princess had exchanged hundreds of emails with the disgraced Epstein between 2011 and 2014, and stayed in his Florida house when he was not there.
“It is incredibly important for me to take responsibility for not checking his background more carefully,” she said. “And to take responsibility for being so manipulated and deceived as I was.”
“Of course I wish I had never met him,” the princess told public broadcaster NRK, stressing that it was Epstein’s victims who deserved justice for the great abuse they had suffered. She said she felt great anger they had not yet received it. Her decision to speak publicly comes after intense scrutiny and pressure to explain herself, including from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The crown princess gave little away during the conversation, and some of her responses came across as defensive.
In 2011, three years after Epstein had been jailed for soliciting underage sex, she wrote: “Googled u after last email. Agree didn’t look too good.”
Sitting alongside her husband, Crown Prince Haakon during the interview, Mette-Marit maintained she “didn’t know he was a sex offender or a predator”, even though the reporter pointed out that a Wikipedia article on Epstein at the time had made clear he was a convicted abuser. “I can’t remember this; it was 15 years ago….I still didn’t know anything about all the abuse. But I had understood enough that I thought he was a bad guy who people shouldn’t have contact with,” she told NRK. “And I had seen up close how he blackmailed others. So I regret that I didn’t tell more people, because I should have.”
She admitted to being too trusting of Epstein, but when asked why neither the palace nor the foreign ministry knew about her links to him, she said he was a “private contact” and she did not tell everyone about her private contacts. Asked why she spent several days in Epstein’s home in Palm Beach in 2013, she explained that it was down to an unnamed mutual acquaintance. “Epstein was a close friend of a good friend of mine,” she said.
She spoke of a “situation” that made her feel uneasy on the last day of her stay at the house, but refused to go any further, other than to say she phoned her husband about it. Crown Prince Haakon tells the interviewer that he remembers Mette-Marit’s call well and how it made his wife feel “unsafe”. Despite the incident, the crown princess maintained contact with Epstein for some time afterwards.
“I am overly trusting, I tend to think the best of people,” she said. “But I also chose to end all direct contact with him. And it was because of such episodes as that.”
The BBC’s story includes some commentary by Norwegian royal correspondents, all of whom think Mette-Marit’s explanations are half-assed and incomplete, to put it mildly, and they’re blasting her for basically arguing that she should be allowed to have friendships and relationships with p3dos because that’s her private life. Yeah, I agree? I also think it’s worth noting that Mette-Marit has not simply been evasive – her story has changed and evolved a great deal over the past decade, mostly because evidence has come out to prove that she’s lied in the past. Something else I find interesting is that Mette-Marit and Haakon sat for this interview on the final day of her son Marius’s trial. The verdict is not due until June – my guess is that they were told not to speak out until Marius’s trial was over?

I get the sense that she’s bored with royal life and Esptein was an outlet for her. She knew he was a predator but she disregarded that because he was fun to be around and to be friends with. Her husband says he’s standing by her but I doubt he has any other choice.
Haven’t seen any evidence that Epstein was “fun to be around” even if you weren’t a teenager he was trafficking. This woman just adjusts her story to conform to the latest revelations. This interview is as embarrassing as Andrew Windsor’s. And she keeps trying to make herself an innocent victim. Gross 🤢.
She’s an awful woman who KNEW what he was but still maintained a friendship with him – this is her trying to spin it so she’s the poor victim. Her husband is a wet blanket who’s ‘in love’ with her so will obvs stand by her.
Plus I hope her son goes to prison where he belongs. You are the company you keep – Marcus learned this behaviour somewhere.
I don’t get her. She was made so uncomfortable by something Epstein did or that happened at Epstein’s house that she called her husband, but she didn’t end it there. She googled Epstein, but didn’t end it there. When did their friendship end, with his death?
She is poison for the royal house.
I’ve seen bits and pieces of this interview and it seems like a huge word salad. She says nothing of substance and comes off uncaring and unfeeling except about her own predicament. Time to abolish another monarchy cuz there’s no way she could be Queen.
Every time she opens up her mouth it becomes clearer and clearer how her son ended up the way he did.
This. Monster creates monster.
I’m afraid so.
On the one hand, i understand a lot of people came into contact with Epstein because he was a powerful figure with influence in a lot of areas. Combine that with his high society girlfriend, and you have a person who crossed paths with many. However, too many people have said you could not be around him for any period of time and not be aware that something strange was going on. I know that if I had a friend/acquaintance who always had teenage girls around, I would think it was creepy and possibly illegal. So when individuals like Mette-Marit claim they had no idea (and we know she was around him quite a bit), I absolutely don’t believe it. I thought her interview was an absolute car crash. Reminded me of Andrew’s interview… They both thought that the interview would “clear” them and were so clueless that these interviews made them look much worse.
She’s just preparing the public for the announcement that his sweet boy will be receiving nothing more than a slap on the wrist and some time in a spa like Norwegian prison.
God this awful woman is beyond shady and something tells me her involvement with the PDF ring and Epstein goes deeper than we know. This is firts world’s corruption at its best.
“Of course I wish I had never been caught”. There I fixed it for you Mette-Marit.
So she was already married to the heir with children when she kept visiting him? How on earth did their secret service allow her to vist?
🤷♀️ Andrew’s allowed him + how many other government officials with their own protection officers? Other royals? So many people knew and said nothing. 😡
She’s sorry she was exposed and that her suitability has been questioned.
My opinion about her has not changed: she has shown a lack of understanding, remorse and decorum. Her becoming Queen Consort would be very damning, and her husband should know this. His own sister has lost her place in the RF (and titles!) due to her unconventional beliefs and business practices, yet his wife retains her full status after being friends and associating with a convicted trafficker and pedo.
ABOLISH THE MONARCHY.
The king of Norway is in not great health and is pretty old, so if he passes in the near future and Haakon assumes the throne, I wonder what will happen with Mette-Marit? I don’t see the Norwegian people or parliament allowing her to be titled “queen”, could she stay a “princess”? Will Haakon step aside for his daughter? She’s only in her early twenties, which would be an awful burden to place on her, especially since this is all her mothers doing.
If he had any grasp on how damning the situation is, he would divorce her OR MM should be removed from any public function and live privately, for the rest of time. This is the only way forward if there is any interest in mantaining the status quo for Ingrid Alexandra and her children.
Even if she is not styled and titled HM Queen MM, her status and place by her husband’s side would be equal to it. She would not be CP anymore, as that would be their daughter’s title.
What is the point of a monarchy? Or nobility? I honestly don’t get it. The Prince obviously isn’t better than any other Norwegian if he got fooled into marrying her! And she is such a liar.
This interview was a disaster
In addition to everything everyone has said I’m still curious about the emails where it seemed she was cheating on Haakon with some mystery guy. She definitely seemed bored with royal life.
IIRC she had to do a lot of image rehabilitation when she got married and she simply doesn’t have enough goodwill built up to dig herself out of this hole, especially with her son on trial
I am reminded of the scene from “Gone With The Wind” Rhett tells Scarlett, “You are like the thief who isn’t the least bit sorry he stole, but you are terribly, terribly sorry you are going to jail.”
To set the scene, Scarlet was caught in an embrace with the married Ashley and is trying to avoid Melanie, Ashley’s wife’s, party. Rhett is making Scarlett go so that they can show their faces in town in the future. To give Melany the face saving satisfaction of throwing Scarlett out of her house. Rhett throws Scarlet a racy dark red gown to wear and quips, “Nothing matronly will do for you tonight.”
Too bad there was so much racism in that old movie because there were some great lines.
Here is a link to the scene.
