Kitty Kelley says she’s been blacklisted for unauthorized Oprah biography

Kitty Kelley’s new Oprah biography is coming out tomorrow and while we’ve been hearing about it Kelley claims that there are plenty of outlets who refuse to give her any coverage. According to Kelley, she’s been denied interviews with Larry King, David Letterman, Charlie Rose, and Barbara Walters among others based on her subject material alone. She also had trouble getting her book published because so many people, particularly publishing companies, are scared of pissing off the almighty Oprah.

Advance details are out about Kelley’s book and there’s some dirt in there, particularly about Oprah’s childhood. Kelley said that Oprah’s cousin (who calls herself “Aunt Katherine”) told her that Oprah’s biological father is not Vernon Winfrey, the man who raised Oprah, but another guy she can’t disclose. Oprah’s cousin told Kelley all about it and swore her to secrecy. Oprah’s “Aunt Katherine” doesn’t believe Oprah was sexually abused as a child, either. Relatives often discount victims and that doesn’t mean much. (On the Today Show this morning, Kelley referred to Oprah’s abuse as the main factor in her teenage promiscuity, so it’s clear that she believes it happened.) As for whether Oprah is gay or not, Kelley calls her “asexual”:

On whether Oprah is gay
“I know people are expecting me to ‘out’ her. But I think she’s just asexual,” Kelley says. “She’s poured all of her energies into her career. And if she is, she is never ever, ever going to come out. So relax, people.”

Oprah’s maybe “elaborated” past
“And now she’s made me keep secrets,” says Kelley, who claims she knows who Winfrey’s real father is but won’t divulge it until Winfrey’s mother tells her daughter, something she has been unwilling to do for decades.

Kelley spent three days in Winfrey’s hometown, Kosciusko, Miss., chatting up Katharine Esters, Winfrey’s cousin who goes by “Aunt” Katharine, then talked to Vernon Winfrey in his Nashville barbershop. (He raised Oprah early on but says he’s not her father.)

Neither believes Winfrey’s stories about sexual abuse in her youth. (Winfrey says she was “continually molested” from age 9 until 14, and she did give birth to a baby boy at 15 โ€” her uncle was suspected of being the father.)

“I don’t believe a bit of it,” Esters told Kelley. “No one in the family believes her stories (of sexual abuse) but now that she’s so rich and powerful everyone is afraid to contradict her.”

Kelley says she found that many of the stories Winfrey has told over the years may be “elaborated.”

“I tried to give both sides,” Kelley says. “Oprah’s stories are colorful and a bit over the top. Maybe they’re just little exaggerations.”

On getting denied for promoting the book
One problem facing Kelley this week is promoting her new biography. Many of Winfrey’s pals have circled their wagons. The View’s Barbara Walters, CNN’s Larry King, CBS’ David Letterman and PBS’ Charlie Rose have all refused to have Kelley on their shows.

“All said very openly that it was because of Oprah,” she says. “And they haven’t even had a chance to look at the book yet.” She is booked on the Today show today and Bill O’Reilly’s show Tuesday.

Another interesting tidbit from the book includes an alleged fling that Oprah had in the 1970s with muzak composer and talk show host John Tesh. Supposedly Tesh got freaked out about their interracial relationship and took off in the middle of the night. Kelley also claims that Oprah’s mother doesn’t have her daughter’s phone number and has to go through an assistant to talk to her.

Oprah never spoke to Kelley despite many attempts to interview her for the book, and many of Oprah’s friends, like Maya Angelou and Maria Shriver, declined to be interviewed as well. Hundreds of Oprah’s old colleagues and family members did grant interviews, though, most of them on the record. (Some had to necessarily speak anonymously due to the confidentiality clause Oprah makes all employees sign.) Judging from this advance excerpt from Oprah: A Biography, Kelley tries to give a balanced view of one of the world’s most powerful and a successful women. She brings some scandal to the table, though, just like Oprah’s been known to do in order to drum up interest in her show.

Lady O has had a tough year-dipping ratings, the South African school court case, trying to finish her show well and now this. Many families deny that intrafamilial abuse or incest happens as it is horrific to face-I don’t blame O for having boundaries with family who may minimize her experience.

  2. TaylorB says:

Wait… what the eff? Oprah and John Tesh? Isn’t he the extra cheesy version of Yani, if that is even possible? Well that is a couple I would never have suspected.

  3. moo says:

I think Kitty Kelly is another gossip slut without all the facts and fabricates them to sell books. Just like a LOT of gossip mongers. Unathorized books is just someone elses opinion, and who really gives a rats ass anyway?

  4. Obvious says:

I’d be interested to read this. granted I take these things with a large pinch of salt, but either way it could be a very interesting read.

  5. Lisa says:

I thought John Tesh was an alien… :p

  6. GreenGinger says:

What a nasty piece of work Kitty Kelly is! Can’t disagree with anything you’ve said, moo. And this is coming from someone who doesn’t even care for Oprah.

  7. Annabelle says:

I don’t understand why she’s being blacklisted- sounds like her book is pretty fair.

  8. simplicity says:

With the exception of anecdotes from those Kelley interviewed, I don’t believe there is much to this book.

Oprah’s possible, “asexual,” nature would not be surprising given her abuse and I read of conflict on the set of The Color Purple, yet not another surprise.

  9. Tru says:

there are plenty folks in Chicago, that can’t wait to read it..

we’ve heard Opie’s side over and over..

I’d like to read it but noting that some stuff MAY be fabricated.

can you imagine?? the folks who do give her an interview–they’ll be blacklisted from what?? the world??

I knew Bill O’Reilly wouldn’t be afraid of the wrath. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. westender says:

So David Letterman, Larry King and Barbara Walters all declined to be interviewed. I would place a bet that Kitty Kelley has her sights set on one of them for her next book!. I am not a big fan of Oprah , but Kitty Kelley is well known for writing some crazy things about celebrities. Unless the person in question makes a statement confirming about what is written, her books are nothing more than a heavier and more expensive version of In Touch or The Star tabloids

  11. Ron says:

Kitty Kelly is not being blacklisted. Man that bitch will make up anything to get press. The people mentioned are all friends of Oprah’s and will not dignify this book. That is what I would expect from my friends. And giving Bill-O kudos for interviewing her is downright funny. Wow how bold. Kelly has already been on that no holds barred Today show.

  12. TaylorB says:

Sorry, but even BillO is wise enough, or his bosses are to not poke a stick at Oprah; it is not in his best interests to piss off a nation full of Oprah loving soccer moms. That has bad move written all over it. Kitty did it with Nancy R., who my mother actually knows and noted that she is not one to tangle with, the woman is a pit viper (a beloved one at that)especially when it came to Ronald, yet even she wasn’t powerful enough for Kitty to be black balled. Oprah on the other hand is that powerful and I bet you a dime to a dollar that Rupert M. and the rest of the media moguls will tread very lightly when it comes to her… this is a woman who can make or break a product with a few words, and these are people who know how to turn a profit and dissing a woman who can derail your product with a few choice words is not a good idea.

  13. YT says:

Just another non-reliable tabloid paper in book form. No thanks.

  14. Beth says:

I doubt Kitty Kelly was blacklisted. More likely she would never have been on their shows anyway. She’s known for being a longform Star or National Enquire. I can’t remember if she was on the big shows with her other books. I just remember her on entertainment/celebrity shows.

  15. Hautie says:

I believe I have read all of Kitty’s book and like them all. As with any biography you have to realize to take it with a grain of salt.

But a year or so ago, Oprah’s father had a book deal and was writing his own little book about Oprah. That she knew nothing about till a New York paper called to ask her about it.

Oprah laughed them off. Then found out within the hour that it was true. And she got that book deal stopped.

So I tend to believe that Kitty may have encountered a little heat. Oprah is big money to the publishing industry. Her book club has done wonders for mediocre books. ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. TaylorB says:

    Karen,

I must confess, while I have no beef (no pun intended) with Oprah, the Dr Phil thing just might pave her way straight to hell. Not to mention is it just me or does he look a bit like one of the grouchy old coots that sat in the balcony at the start of The Muppet Show?

  17. Cheyenne says:

Kelly will clean up on this book. It’s already #4 on Amazon’s best-seller list and it hasn’t even been published yet.

Kelly is another gossip-monger like Ian Halperin. The difference between her and Halperin is that Kelly is usually careful to get her facts straight.

  18. GatsbyGal says:

Oprah is a beast that needs slaying. Maybe this book will help put her in her place?

  19. the other mel says:

I don’t think anything she has to say here is groundbreaking or newsworthy. And I have to have extreme boundaries with my parents, too. Nothing big here.

  20. Ruffian9 says:

Such a strange little munster she is.

  21. Just a Poster says:

I can’t wait to read it, and you know the mighty O is pissed that she couldn’t stop it.

Now as far as it being fact… I doubt it, but I bet it will make for one hell of a read!

  22. Crash2GO2 says:

Oooh, she spent 3 whole days down in Oprah territory getting the down low.

    *rolling eyes*

  23. My2Cents says:

Jeez Loiuse you can’t half tell this old hag is a smoker. Check out the lines around her mouth.

  24. Sincerity says:

Kitty Kelley is not even close to a “respected” journalist. For the most part, she probably contacted people who had “an ax to grind” for one reason or another. It’s sad that a few of Oprah’s family members chose to comment on such a personal matter as her alleged sexual abuse. They weren’t the victim and should have never commented at all. Snooping around into someone’s paternity is very painful for the child as well as the mother. I wouldn’t wish Kitty Kelley’s “karmic payback” on my worst enemy.

  25. CB Rawks says:

She means to say the story was *embellished*, not “elaborated”. Wow, she must be a great writer if she can’t find a simple word like that to say what she actually means.

  26. shorty40 says:

Oh puh-leeeeeze! “Almighty Oprah” my ass. She’s a f*cking human being, no different than any other 2 legged human walking around. Why people feel the need to put “celebrities” and such up on a golden throne is beyond me. I can’t stand the woman and am soooo tempted to buy the book, just to boost the sales. Oprah disgusts me.

  27. Argotsboy says:

She will be on Howard Stern within days. Blacklisted, Oprah, Unauthorised Biography! Those are three things Stern is compelled to talk about.

  28. Don’t waste your money buying trash published by this dumpster-diving bottom feeder. Kitty Kelley calling Opra (or anyone) a liar, well she should be the expert. Too bad the mainstream media didn’t get indignant when she was trashing other people with her lies, instead of eating them up and pretending they believed them.

    Tired of it.

  29. Robert says:

I really don’t give two shits about Oprah. She has been exploiting people on her show for how long now? It’s about time she gets the same treatment.

And I know I know… She was nice to her employees from time to time… Big deal. Being on the show for how many decades and just recently did she decide to spend some cash on them isn’t saying much.

  30. J says:

Is she truly blacklisted or is she just not so important in these people’s eyes?

By writing about the most famous/powerful people, it doesn’t make you automatically a big writer. If it works this way, Perez Hilton should be No 1 writer because this blogger writes about celebrity every second.

I am not a fan of Madame Oprah but I think someone thinks too much of herself.

  31. Amy says:

Talk about a mere human having this much power. I admire this Oprah woman, she is indeed a powerful woman.
