JD Vance on the US economy: ‘You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight’

Donald Trump has been waddling and ranting through his campaign stops ahead of the midterm elections, but he’s obviously ancient and in very poor health. So they’ve been sending out JD Vance to “barnstorm” for MAGA Republicans. The problem? The Trump-Vance administration is historically unpopular and they have literally no coherent message for the midterms. What can they really say? “More of the same?” Add to that, Vance is rizzless – he is NOT the midterm closer, you know? So during a stop in Toledo, Ohio (his “home state”), Vance tried out a new message: the Trump-Vance economy is like the Titanic. Here’s the full quote: “Democrats talk a lot about the affordability crisis in the United States of America, and yes, there is an affordability crisis, one created by Joe Biden’s policies. You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight. It takes time to fix what was broken.”

Blaming the Trump-Vance economy on Joe Biden is wildly stupid, especially given that Biden managed to pull off the impossible post-pandemic: he increased job growth, he kept gas prices stable and managed to decrease inflation over the course of his term. The Biden economy wasn’t perfect, but it was a billion times better than the Trump-Vance economy. But thanks to this rancid Cabbage Patch doll, we now know that he and Donald Trump think of the American economy in Titanic terms. You know, the ship which famously did NOT turn around. The ship which sank into the icy sea.

There are enough stupid people in this country that will still vote for Republicans. Inflation, job loss and lack of jobs creation, elimination/reduction of safety net programs, fuel prices, housing crisis, student debt, rising healthcare, it will get WORSE in 2027. And IF the Democrats can win back the house/Senate, a lot of the vile contemptible BBB provisions will still be in play, e.g. healthcare insurance, Medicaid. I don’t faith in any Jeffries/Schumer leadership. I am voting Democrat all the way, but I am not hopeful. I am depressed and I feel for the American people. On another note, JD Vance is a loser, will always be a loser.

How did this guy ever manage to graduate high school, much less get into Yale? General knowledge seems to have evaded him successfully…

I don’t get the Dems though. All of them should remind the general public out there that it’s Felon47’s tariffs and the wars that Felon47 started that weakened the (world’s) economy and caused inflation, job loss, higher prices. And that the VP is an influential part of that admin.

    • 2legit2quit says:

Because he’s not stupid. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

      • Thinking says:

I think he’s bought and paid for and he knows what he’s doing, but I can’t actually tell if he’s smart. Maybe he knows how to pass a test, but his analogies are always really weird. A smart person wouldn’t have mentioned the couch in his memoir.

    • bisynaptic says:

He must have been an affirmative action case, all the way.

    • D says:

He isn’t stupid, he is a liar who does what he needs to do for power. He is the essence of slimy politician, parroting whatever he thinks will keep him on the “winning” side. At least T*u*mp believes the crap he says. This one only believes in what will get him in the right rooms and keep him powerful.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

@Nanea: last time I checked (this morning!), the Dems are doing all that. You need a new source for news. Why do people always pivot to bashing Democrats when it’s Republicans who have caused every second of this nightmare?

      • Nanea says:

        I’m not bashing anyone.

But the sources I see don’t really do much in terms of reminding people who’s at fault, beside Jon Ossoff, Abdul El Sayed, and two or three others.

Many of the Dems Abroad chapters here in Europe have gone invisible, as if they’ve given up on wanting to change anything, and my district in MA isn’t exactly known for being progressive.

    • DK says:

And it’s like the Dems have completely forgotten that Biden’s economy was pretty great…given he inherited a terrible economy from Felon 45, and had to steer the nation and world out of a Covid and production crisis caused by DT’s terrible policies the first time around.

Ugh Americans (well, MAGAs) have no memory/are willfully ignorant.

    • HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

Agreed. They should also remind voters that Democratic leadership DID turn around the Titanic metaphorically overnight – from a macro economics perspective – Obama as soon as he got into office in 2009, and Biden in 2021, both passed aggressive recovery plans through Congress that got our economy back on track quickly and successfully. Obama had inherited the subprime mortgage crisis. Biden had inherited the pandemic, which Trump had criminally mismanaged in this country.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

In political science there is something called message discipline. It means you formulate a simple message and repeat it over and over. Reminding voters about Biden would not only blow up their message but remind them of a presidency that lots of them weren’t happy with. The message less than two weeks out is everything is too expensive and much more expensive than it was before Trump. He is causing your suffering from his tariffs to his unnecessary war with Iran which he can’t end having started it. He is also corrupt and cruel. We will stop him. If that’s not good enough, then nothing would be and complaining about what you think the Dems should be saying (even though they often are) is just suppressing the vote at this point. Please focus on getting everyone to vote for Democrats in every office.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

I just want to add that Republicans trying to blame Biden for this mess is not just simple Republican stupidity. They are trying to bait Democrats into defending Biden instead of attacking them. This election is a referendum on Trump and his Republican enablers. They would love to relitigate the Biden administration and have it be a referendum on that. It may seem like a stupid strategy to blame Biden, but there is always method to right wing madness. The Democrats must stay on offense and not fall for Republican baiting.

  6. Sue says:

Biden’s policies did not place our gas prices at unaffordable levels with no sign of coming down. Trump starting a whole ass war to distract from him being a pdf file did.

    Dude, you’re the iceberg.

  8. olliesmom says:

You’re the ones driving the Titanic into the iceberg dummy.

This man gives me the creeps.

  9. YankeeDoodles says:

You remember what that young girl called Emma wrote on Twitter when she survived the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school in Florida? “Marco Rubio is exactly like the AR-15: he’s for sale.” This is what you get when you have sock puppets who answer to billionaires. It’s funny, some people attribute our dysfunction to the deep state — the security services, as they call them in the UK, more sensibly — but I think the deep state at this point must be shaking its head, head in its hands, almost enough to make you pity them. The deep state fwiw has been effectively outplayed by the oligarchs and unlike the comparable set-up in Russia these are two totally different classes of people, or factions, there are no siloviki if you like. They diverged and now we are caught between them in crossfire. The whole country is like Dealey Plaza.

  10. Yup, Me says:

I wonder how much Peter Thiel paid for JD Vance’s yassified makeover, only for this garbage pail kid /charisma vacuum to render it completely useless.

Someone needs to tie JD Vance to a chair and put him in a room full of mirrors so the gaping hole in his soul can devour the entire space and then itself.

  11. Gabby says:

The fact that Vance will still appear in Ohio today with and on behalf of Vivek Ramaswamy after that ad tells you all you need to know about him. May this be the day both their careers come to a screeching halt.

  12. Anne Maria says:

To be fair, trump isn’t just waddling and ranting, he’s checking out and reporting on men’s bottoms too. Waxing lyrical about male Republican candidates’ junk in the trunk. I’m trying and failing to imagine the media coverage if any Dem president did this. Or Pete Buttigieg.

  13. L4Frimaire says:

He does realize Titanic sank right? Just like our democracy is doing while he wants to rearrange the deck chairs and sell us out to the highest tech bro or Putin. Vance is so repulsive.

  14. superjosh says:

They’re so dumb they can’t even come up with a proper analogy. Everyone knows what eventually happened to the Titanic.

    • Blithe says:

Actually, I was startled that they DID come up with the perfectly apt analogy. The Titanic — brought to us by today’s Republican Party. The Reflecting pool, the Nazi-ish imagery, the degenerate and demented leadership— all images of gigantic failure, with “safety” policies and procedures that prioritize the rich. Everyone knows what eventually happened to the Titanic, and similarly, everyone can see what is happening as MAGA politicians destroy our country.

I hope the Democrats have the sense to publicize the Republican’s very own stated imagery and associations.

      • Blithe says:

To add: I’ve just read where Vance has spoken out in response to Ramaswamy’s truly repulsive and unconscionable ad re: Acton. It’s good of him to remind us who he is — and what his values are.

It actually makes me feel sick imagining Vance and Ramaswamy in the same law school class, and both coming from Ohio. Vance is “disgusted “ by pushback to Ramaswamy’s ad, and I’m disgusted by both Vance and Ramaswamy. As awful as the ad is for victims of sexual abuse and sexual violence, and Amy Acton herself, her mother’s presentation is awful on multiple levels. Ramaswamy and Vance don’t care about any of that, including the probable repercussions to not just Amy Acton and her family, but to her estranged — and haggard — mother, who I hope had the wherewithal to understand exactly what her actions would look like and how they would be perceived.

        Titanic hubris?

Everyone needs to see this ad — and understand who and what they’re voting for, and who and what we’re voting against.

  16. I work in the accounting field (not CPA/taxes) and we had our monthly meeting this week. Our President stated that health insurance costs are set to go up 60% for next year. I could legit see the fear on his face as he described working with HR to get quotes and make a decision. Currently, my company pays for the employee but not dependents. When is the “dam gonna break” is what I keep asking myself!
