Levi Johnston publicly apologizes for smearing the Palin family

Levi Johnston talked a lot of smack about the Palin family last year, most notably claiming that Sarah Palin referred to her child with Down’s Syndrome as her “retarded baby.” He said that thePalins were working to keep him away from his son, Tripp, and that they convinced Bristol to break up with him by buying her a car. He claimed Sarah wanted to be famous and often complained about how she would quit her “hard” job as governor after she earned some easy money from her book. (Which she did, leaving a full six months before her term was up.) He also claimed that Sarah and her husband Todd were having marital problems and that Todd regularly slept on the couch. (There’s more, like Sarah and Todd supposedly knowing that he was sleeping with their daughter and then conspiring to cover up her pregnancy. I probably forgot a couple of things.)

I don’t like the Palins at all but Levi really did step out of line with his little press tour. The Palins didn’t stay quiet about anything he said of course and fired back with bitchy statements at just about every turn. He didn’t have to talk so much smack about his would-be in laws, as entertaining as it was at the time, only he didn’t have anything else to talk about and needed to keep his name in the press. He wanted to reinvent himself as “Ricky Hollywood” and have some kind of media career despite his lackluster personality. It didn’t work and he couldn’t even fall back on his good looks. The Playgirl photoshoot he did ended up being a pathetic dud.

Now Johnston is getting along with Bristol again and probably sleeping with her. (Although they’re calling it “co-parenting” and Bristol is swearing she’s chaste and cashing in on it.) He’s had to eat a little crow and has issued a vague apology for all the crap he said about the Palins:

Levi Johnston isn’t just getting past his differences with Bristol Palin – he’s also hoping to make amends with her famous mom.

“Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”

Bristol added her own statement Tuesday saying, “Part of co-parenting is creating healthy and honest relationships between the parents. Tripp one day needs to know the truth and needs to know that even if a mistake is made the honorable thing to do is to own up to it.”

Johnston and the former vice presidential candidate had been engaged in a war of words, with the 20-year-old accusing Palin of complaining about her job as governor of Alaska and claiming “there was a lot of talk of divorce” in the Palin household.

Palin spoke out against the “malicious” remarks and also ripped Johnston for posing for Playgirl and talking about sex on The Tyra Banks Show.

Though they had been in a bitter custody battle, Bristol, who recently made her acting debut on ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, has said she and Johnston want to turn “a new page here as co-parents … and [put] aside the past because doing so is in [our son] Tripp’s best interest.”

“So to the Palin family in general and to Sarah Palin in particular, please accept my regrets and forgive my youthful indiscretion,” Johnston says in the statement. “I hope one day to restore your trust.”

So what wasn’t true, that Sarah wanted to cash in and abandon her post as governor of Alaska? She kind of proved him right on that one, but I’m thinking that the marital strife was normal and that Levi was blowing it out of proportion. I’m hoping that Sarah never called little Trig “retarded,” either.

I want to know whether Levi is still paying the $1,750 a month he owes Bristol in child support now that she’s making her own money from being famous like her mom. If he reunited with her and convinced her he was broke, maybe she would overlook some missed payments. I’m just saying.

Hmm, makes me wonder if the recent stories of them reconciling are true. I can imagine them having sex on the piles of money she is getting for preaching abstinence. UGH, now I have to go scrub my brain with bleach to get that image out of my mind.

  2. Lisa Turtle says:

Is Sarah Palin wearing a bump-it in those pictures?

  3. irena NL says:

That apology was in order so kudos to Levi for admitting he was in the wrong. Sounds like he’s maturing and wanting to do what’s best for his son and he and Bristol may be patching up their relationship. Good for him!

  4. denise says:

    This family is trash.

  5. EMV says:

FINALLY! I am no Palin fan, but he was really nasty towards them. It’s because of them that we even know who he is. I hope he is in his child’s life and that he is finally being a responsible human being.

  6. RK says:

Good for him. He is finally growing up.

  7. anjasmomma says:

It sounds like he is getting played….but then again I wouldn’t ever trust Sarah Palin and family.

  8. Iggles says:

He and Bristol are back together, so of course the Palins made him apologize!! Let’s see, soon there will be another baby on the way AND a shotgun wedding in 3.. 2.. 1..

  9. Katija says:

The Palins are such a blight on this era and this generation. We are all going to cringe in twenty, thirty years when we watch how the history books handle these numb nuts. (That is, if the next generation keeps the whole “book” thing happening.)

  10. JoElla says:

Poltics aside..Wouldn’t it be nice if the comments could actually focus on the story (hey a girl can dream right)

Sounds like he may one day actually make a pretty swell grown up.
And that is a very good thing.

I completely agree with you @standards; It’s always amusing that the libs assume the split in America is 80-20 in their favor. Even now with dirtbags like Levi Johnson admitting they’re liars, the left chooses to believe the lies vs. question their own past beliefs. We’ll see how that 50-50 split works out in 2012.

  12. Katija says:

    @ Standards

    Oh, COME ON.

There is nothing wrong with being a logical, sound-minded conservative. In fact, while I consider myself a Democrat, I do NOT consider myself an Obama backer. He’s not deplorable, but I disagree with a lot of what he does.

Why do conservatives have to say, “Oh, I’m a Republican, so therefore I have to stand by Sarah Palin and her litter.” COME ON. She’s a moron. Her daughter got knocked up and then jumped on the abstinence bandwagon. She guest starred on a damn ABC family show. Sarah quit her position as governor to become a political pundit. These are power-hungry, disingenuous people.

Writing an article shmearing a respected Republican would be a low move on CB’s part. But dissing the Palins and “Ricky Hollywood” when they CHOOSE to act like fame-hungry celebrities? Come on. This isn’t a political attack, it’s an attack against people who are no better than the Lohans.

  13. Jules says:

What a trashy family! And she could have been a heartbeat away! Chilling. And to whoever asked, she has been known to wear a bump-it!

  14. missmilly says:

Why don’t people like the Palins? Are they mean? Evil? Nasty people? Why? Specifics please

  15. lucy2 says:

I don’t like Sarah Palin at all for many reasons, and have mixed feelings about Bristol. I have no opinion on her husband or children who aren’t in the media.

I am glad he made a public apology (though I’d like to know what in particular he lied about too!) and he was really, really wrong and immature to slam them publicly. Whatever was going on with them, they’re the family of his child. Hopefully from now on he does better.

Being that CB is a blog, not a newspaper, I don’t have any issue with personal opinions being written in the articles. Blanket generalizations about what people of differing opinions believe bugs me though.

  16. original kate says:

palin has the IQ of a sand flea, bristol is a hypocrite, and todd & levi are lunkheads. they have all said nasty things about each other, all of which are probably true. how pleasant it will be for that baby to read those comments when he gets older. *sigh* i wish all these snowbillies would go back to the trashy little town they came from – wasilla, meth capital of america.

  17. anjasmomma says:

Katija I completely agree with you.

  18. benny says:

There are just as trashy as any other reality tv family, and even more so than some.

  19. Celebitchy says:

I honestly do not get how this post is biased toward the left when I’m making fun of both Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston. I thought it was pretty balanced and I spent a lot of time recapping. I guess there are always people who are going to bash us for even the slightest amount of political coverage.

  20. Jeri says:

I too think the Palins are trash, at least Sarah & Todd. Bristol is just “cashing in” as her Mother taught her and you can’t really blame any of the children for the poor taste the parents exhibit. This is not political, I’m referring to the poor taste they have shown every since entering the public eye (& most likely before that).

  21. OC lady says:

Damage control. I also think he’s being paid to stop making them look bad. I think there was some truth to what Levi said, since Sarah never denied it but instantly went on the attack, saying he was an absentee father, not doing anything to support his child, etc. So, this about face just seems off to me.

  22. di butler says:

As a Libertarian with no dogs in the fight, truthfully, these posts about politics usually just sound like watered down HuffPost. Sorry. Even the “stars” you dislike are the exact same ones that get trashed there. I understand your views may be the same, but yeah, If I was ideologically bent straight right, I wouldn’t visit this site twice.
