Kirsten Dunst: “I avoid the red carpet. You won’t see me at an event for the sake of it.”

Kirsten Dunst really seems to have matured in the past few years. She’s looking well put together and sober lately, where she’s had some serious fashion missteps in the past. In an appearance on Ellen yesterday, Kirsten was funny, self-deprecating and open. She told some funny stories and even got serious for a moment and spoke in general terms about battling depression. Kirsten went to rehab for “depression” in 2008, and insisted that it was not for “drug or alcohol abuse.” The way she explained it in 2008, she “was struggling,” and “had the opportunity to go somewhere and take care of myself.” On Ellen, Kirsten said something similar about how fame kind of drained her, but that she was not really comfortable discussing her bout with depression. She was gracious and handled the subject well. Kirsten also said that she’ll do promotion for her films, but that she doesn’t go to events as she feels uncomfortable. She also admitted that she lives with her mom, and joked about having to brush cat litter out of her bed! I’m really warming to her. Here’s more:

On her career break
I definitely took a little bit of a break. Also, when you’re in your 20s you’ve got to figure things out and take a step back… it reinspired what I do.

On depression
It’s not something I don’t feel like totally comfortable talking about. It’s a very personal thing I dealt with.

On being sensitive in the business
As an actress, you’re supposed to be sensitive and vulnerable and have this side to you. But then you’re supposed to be like super sociable and ‘on’ and like, nice to everybody. That’s a weird dichotomy. It’s a lot to ask of a person. It’s not a normal thing.

On going to events
I avoid the red carpet as much as possible. You have to do it to promote your movies obviously, but you won’t see me at an event for the sake of it.

On living with her mom
I’m in New York. But right now I’m at my mom’s house… My mom, my grandma, my aunt’s there visiting and my cousins live there. Three generations of ladies and three cats. So things are really looking up for me.

On having the cat litter in her bedroom
I have the worst bedroom. Downstairs near the garage. I’m leaving the cat litter box out of there. Because there was like granules on my bed and when I got out of the shower, melting cat littler. It’s hard to keep clean.

That’s hysterical! She has a great attitude about living with her family. She probably has a house in LA too anyway. It sounds like she’s in such a good place in her life.

Ellen told Kirsten, who won best actress at Cannes this year, that she’ll probably get an Academy Award nomination for Melancholia. She also inevitably asked her about director Lars Von Trier’s Nazi comments that got him booted from the film festival. Kirsten explained “He was so nervous and he just got started on a tangent and then wouldn’t stop. So it was like watching your friend just put their foot in their mouth deeper and deeper and deeper. I was so embarrassed for him.” She also explained that Von Trier was trying to make a joke. “YouTube it, my face is actually pretty funny.”

Later on in the show, Ellen and Kirsten played Guesstures with the audience. It was funny as hell and Kirsten really rolled with it. Whatever she went through, she’s come out the other side and she’s better than ever. I’d love to see her in more films.

CLASSIC introvert – ! I actually love her a little bit, now.

That remark about having to be flipped “ON” and sociable is one of those introvert cues — you feel like being around people and being social drains your batteries…..

She manages to sound shockingly normal.

  2. Astrid says:

Good for her. Love the shoes in the last pic.

  3. jen says:

Marie Antoinette is one of my favorite movies-so I’ll always have a soft spot for her. She was great on Ellen.

  4. Hautie says:

It is nice to see that Kirsten recognized she had a problem. Though she crazy as hell there for a couple of years. She got help and is better for it.

Maybe living with her family is helping her keep her sane. And out of trouble.

(And to think she was just as big as mess as Lohan was a couple years ago.)

But Kirsten put the brakes on that nonsense. And now look at her… she is the girl with her career back on track.

  5. Pyewacket says:

I have always loved her, from the moment I saw her in “Interview” till now. I find her refreshing, honest, and a good actress.

  6. lucy2 says:

I’ve always liked her as an actress, and am glad to see she’s turned it around and is doing well.
I don’t blame her for wanting to keep a lot of her struggles private.

  7. Wildone says:

She comes off really well in this interview.

I agree with Kirsten about not going to event for the sake of it, I don’t get I celebrities that do. I mean how many Gala events can a celebrity go to before it starts to look like they’re just going for the attention; Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Demi Moore and Jennifer Love Hewitt are all pushing their limit of it looking like attention seeking. If they really care about a cause then why not get off their ass and really doing something about it instead of having dinner, getting drunk, buying art and parting in the name of charity.

  8. Q says:

Why do they ALL claim to be shy, introverted, meek, blah blah
Good for her if shes cleaned up or is she saying this for Oscar?
No lie. Kristen used to be the one man groupie along with Sienna Miller. She would go to the opening of a fridge door!!!!

  9. Relli says:

Love her and always have! So many of her movies are my my all time favorites! I am glad to see she got help when she needed it and is happy! Its easy to forget but she started out as a child actress, although Interview with a Vampire creeps me out she is so good in it and sooo young. This is how you transition from a child star to an adult actress.

  10. Lithe says:

@Q, it sounds like she realized that the way she was living her life didn’t feel authentic. I think she’s allowed to move past that period in her life.

  11. Britta says:

I’ve loved her since she was in Little Women in like 93 or 94. I hope she will start taking more roles again!

  12. Original Chloe ) says:

    “Melancholia” is a wonderful movie.

  13. L says:

BTW her outfit for Ellen? Adorable

  14. Lee says:

I don’t blame her – going to red carpet events seems like a nightmare.

Photographers yelling at you while you plaster a fake smile on your face & pray that the flash bulbs aren’t making your underwear visible or that your boob tape is still attached.

Then you go online when you get home & see catty bitches like us cackling over your fat ankles and busted hair, and gossiping about why you’re the biggest slut, like, ever. No thanks.

  15. almond says:

@ Lee LOL, that’s colourful picture you paint.

  16. layla says:

Bring It On is still one of my favourite movies!

    *spirit fingers*

  17. danielle says:

Interesting. I’ve always liked her as an actress too.

  18. Nikita says:

I am really impressed with her. A beautiful movie star, but with such a nice, down-to-earth attitude. Besides, a really inspiring person!

  19. Denise says:

She has really cleaned up her act; I just really like her all of a sudden. I hope good things continue to happen for her. As a cat mom, I live with the everlasting litter crumbs so I love this story.

  20. jamie says:

I’m starting to like her. Looking forward to seeing her movie too.

  21. lin234 says:

Sounds like taking time away from everything was the best thing she could do for herself. I think after the spiderman series, everyone was a bit over her. But she took time off, figured things out and she sounds like she’s in a good place. Makes me want to check out her latest project.

“Three generations of ladies and three cats. So things are really looking up for me.”

    That is hilarious.

  22. Heather M (Heather) says:

I just saw her in All Good Things, and she was amazing. I never thought of her as a great actress, but I think she’s finally coming into her own.

  23. buckley says:

She’s a great actress and Melancholia was beautiful.

  24. eileen says:

    LOVE. The. SHoes. O_O

  25. Launicaangelina says:

Love her! Virgin Suicides, Crazy/Beautiful, Interview With A Vampire, etc! She’s great and I am glad to see her in a better place.

  26. JaneWonderfalls says:

I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Kirsten Dunst, I never understood the backlash I have notice she has gotten over the years, but she has been a fav of mine every since Dick. Glad she is back!

  27. buckley says:

She was also great in Bring It On.

  28. kazoo says:

i’ve always liked her. i root for all child actors to make it out okay. good to see her in a better place in her life now.

  29. MoP says:

Drop Dead Gorgeous – hilarity incarnate!

  30. kibbles says:

She seems to have conquered the child actor curse and will go on to have a stable career. Good for her. I also think she is down to earth compared to other young Hollywood actresses of her caliber.

  31. GoodCapon says:

She’s lovely. The cat litter story is gross though.

  32. Ally says:

I love adult Kiki, but I have to say living with your Mom in your 30s doesn’t sound like having your life together. With the garage room and all, it sounds like she might still be struggling with that depression.

    Long-distance judging & diagnosis!

Anyway, I do hope she’s well. She’s a marvellous actress and has carved out an impressive career for 20 frickin’ years.

  33. Kosmos says:

I like her. We need to recognize that people are different in some ways, even celebrities and actors. They need privacy just as we sometimes do. I like her honesty. It has to be very complicated being an actor, jumping through all the social hoops and dealing with a variety of issues inherent in that field of work. You always have to be on top and there is the constant competition to get parts.

  34. Kimberly says:

Have always loved her movies, except the spiderman ones~never seen them~not my thing.

Glad she was open to seeking help, and hope to see her in indies. I think those studio movies that execs cut to shreds wouldn’t show her acting skills.

  35. kieslwoski says:

Thank you so much for posting this, I have always lived Kirsten as an actress and I love her fashion sense – just phenomenal.

Loved the interview and I do hope she gets nominated for Melancholia, to all who have not seen it please watch it, great movie.

  36. original kate says:

    i love this nutty bitch.

  37. Shannon says:

I’ve always loved her! She seems pretty real compared to most celebs, and she’s not afraid of being herself. She seems like she doesn’t care too much about her “image” and I think that’s why.

  38. amc says:

I watched Melancholia last night. It was amazing! Kirsten did a wonderful job! It may not be for everyone but at least give it a chance ….it’s worth the money just for visual effects.

  39. louis says:

    very beautiful girl!
