Here’s Alexander Skarsgard in a shiny blue suit paired with a brown shirt and matchy blue tie at the Melancholia premiere in New York last night. He’s dressed like Ryan Reynolds here, but I don’t hate his look. This dude could make a muumuu look hot, primarily because we know what’s underneath.
Alex’s co-star Kirsten Dunst was also there looking overdressed in a floor length loose black v-neck gown paired with a black fabric choker. I like the simple cut of the dress and her hair and makeup were so pretty. As far as Dunst’s looks go this was a win for her. She’s had some disastrous fashion in the past. She’s really pulled it together lately and has shown a lot of improvement with a kind of conservative covered-up but feminine style.
Also there was Charlotte Gainsbourg putting our minor criticisms about Alex and Kiki’s looks to shame. She had major shaggy dog bangs trauma, heavily black rimmed eyes, and ridiculous too-long loose trousers festooned with sparkly silver front panels and an oversize belt. This is the chick who was pregnant during the Cannes promotion for Melancholia and who wore a see through wrap dress over her bump. It looked like she had on a robe, no joke. Maybe she felt uncomfortable with her post-baby body and wanted to cover up. Kristen shows how you do it well and without looking clownish.
Melancholia is a movie about the pending end of the world, as seen through a new bride’s eyes. It’s out in the US in limited release on November 11. It was directed by Nazi-loving Lars Von Trier, and I keep thinking of what Paul Bettany just said about how terrible it was to work with Von Trier after Alex Skarsgard’s dad, actor Stellan, convinced him to do it. “[Von Trier] has no interest in you being any part of the cerebral process with him. You’re absolutely his puppet. But no, I don’t want to be too down on Lars. He is extraordinary and he is a sensation.” You know that Alex isn’t going to trash talk Von Trier, though, he’s going to be gracious about him because he’s not about to jeopardize his career. Plus, that’s just the type of guy he is.

*ahem* Von Trier was trying (and failed obviously) to joke when he made those Nazi-comments. Just wanted to throw that in there. He’s very far from a Nazi.
Also while I think Alex looks great, I really don’t like his hair here – it’s dyed for a movie and I hope he gets another hairdo ASAP he’s done with that movie. Kiki looks good again.

I know I’m in a minority in this but he doesn’t do it for me at all. I’m totally neutral for Skarsgard – it must be the Bosworth curse

After the all the recent set pics of Alex in character from Disconnect, these pics are such a treat. He looks amazing in a suit. The pictures of Kirsten and Alex in their wedding clothes are so beautiful.
Alex could be wearing anything (or nothing) and still look hot and sexy. There’s something about the flashes that make him look too pale. I love Kiki’s look although I wish the dress were bit shorter. (I want to see the shoes!) Charlotte has her own style. She’s the only who would rock those pants IMO. As for the Melancholia, it looks like a masterpiece. Too bad the LvT nazi comments just won’t go away, thus probably ruining any Oscar chances.

It sounds shallow to say, but I realized the hot factor for me is his banana blond hair — bc when i saw photos of him last week with his hair dyed mousy brown, with jo-schmo clothing, he was SO unappealing!

Glad Kirsten seems to have gotten back on track and is doing well.
I don’t get his appeal. He has beady, watery eyes, a bulbous nose, a massive forehead, barely any lips, and is frankly too tall IMHO. Maybe it’s because I’ve never seen True Blood, because everyone that has the hots for him usually say it’s really his character that they fancy and not the actual actor. I guess he’s just one of those Robert Pattinson cases were if you don’t know or like the character he plays you just won’t get his appeal.
Pictures never do him justice, his face has weird angles. He’s amazing in person, I’ve met him twice.
@jinni – I liked him before True Blood, check out “Generation Kill.” It’s not just about the characters he plays, he’s genuinely an incredibly nice, fun person.
All three of those outfits should be taken off and burned.

@jinni – I think Alex looks better in Generation Kill and in Straw Dogs than in TB personally. He always gives me the tingles. Take any celebrity out there and you will find people who don’t think they’re hot. To each their own.
I cannot unsee that picture MK posted a few days back of him on set. The suits making it slightly better, but nope, it’s still there. I know there’s a whole lotta not hot when you take away the suit.
The Nazi Lover stuff was meant to be absurd, it was just a dismissive descriptor, I didn’t mean it literally.

As far as gainsbourg goes: was not a fan before this film but she was brilliant and stole the show from dunst. she’s a musician as well and her style is more directed by that when it comes to red carpet look. Aside from the eyes make up she’s stylish this time
Jenna: Yeah, I know that everyone has their different types of actors that they think are hot and I’m not trying to put anyone down for liking who they like.
Also, when an actor gets really hyped by a lot of people, whether it’s for their looks or acting talent, I just try to understand why.
jinni – agreed with everything you said except for “too tall” there’s no such thing as too tall.
I remember when True Blood came out and everyone kept banging on about him. I began watching it in season 2 around episode 10 and still didn’t see it, but then I read the books and I started to get into him. Eric really has a lot to do with it. And I also found him sexy as Colbert in GK. I’ve seen some of his other work and I think it’s really down to the characters he plays.

The Original Ashley and Sara: Yes, for me there is such a thing as being “too tall”. I’m short (5′ 2″) and I’ve never got the obsession women have with tall guys. I find any guy over 5′ 8″ to be too tall for me. I wouldn’t want to be with someone that dwarfs me in size or has to practically fold themselves in half just to kiss me or even on tip-toes I couldn’t put my arms around their neck ( I don’t wear heels).
Now would I not go out with a guy if he was everything I always wanted, but was taller then my preference? No, but just I don’t tend to find tall men attractive.

When I watch Alex act he has a certain intensity that I find really sexy. He also has this vulnerability in his eyes that makes you sympathetic to his characters. He’s not perfect, but he does it for me. Always!

It’s definitely about who he plays in the TB. He’s like James Gandolfini in the Sopranos as Tony Soprano. There’s something raw and sexy about both of them. Maybe not in real life, but definitely in the parts that they play.

What I’m impressed by is how he can so easily switch from Swedish to English and the fact he TOTALLY sounds American. I had no idea at first he was from Sweden.

Miranda, oh, it’s him, not his characters. His characters are fine and interesting, but Alex himself is a funny, goofy and nice guy, and seems to be very aware of what’s going on in the world (There was an interview he did about year ago where he mentioned the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and I’m thinking ‘most Americans don’t even know about that decision’). I like the way he looks, but if there wasn’t some sort of personality behind it I wouldn’t be that interested in him.
hairball, he used to have a little bit of a Swedish accent, but that was gotten rid of for his role in Generation Kill. I’m impressed by his sense of humor in English, it means he’s really fluent now.
I’m not digging the brown shoes with his outfit.
Something I really liked from Straw Dogs? Alex had a tan. He looks great with a little more color in his face. But he’s always hot to me!
@hairball – he hangs out in the West Village a lot, where I live. Once I met him at a bar (he was slightly tipsy and buying shots for tons of people haha) and once on the set of that movie he’s doing with the kid (not tipsy, still just as nice).
