Tilda Swinton, David Bowie lookalike, stars in his new video: awesome?

Tilda Swinton David Bowie

The universe has come full circle with the union of lookalikes Tilda Swinton and David Bowie in Bowie’s new music video, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).” See, they’ve been listening to our remarks all along and probably had a good laugh about it on the phone every so often. Then when Bowie prepared to film his video, he probably gave Tilda a ring. After all, Tilda is nothing if not a chameleon and one who would rather be handsome than pretty, but ultimately, she’s Bowie-esque in both appearance and nature.

Now we’re presented with the ultimate opportunity to watch them in action together in this short film/video, which also functions as proof that Bowie and Tilda are in fact not the same person. In this video, Tilda plays the wife of Bowie and, at one point, she even hops onstage and lipsynchs the lyrics as they play. What fun:

These two crazy kids. They’re just f–king with us now. And we’re loving every second of it, right? As far as Bowie songs go, this one isn’t an instant classic, but the guy will never be able to top his iconic hits of yesteryear. Mostly, I’ll stick to his old stuff, but I really dug his 1997 disc, Earthling (for which he collaborated with Trent Reznor), as well. Of course, “The Stars” is still better than most of the awful music that hits the airwaves these days. Plus, the video has Tilda. That pretty much says it all.

It’s Bowie, therefore it is awesome AND weird. Apparently, it’s very much a throwback to The Man Who Fell to Earth. I love it.

Thank you for the post on David Bowie. I think Bowie has done some really interesting Bowie music over the past decades. This song is BowIe so I Bowie but still it is enjoyable. However, Bowie can Bowie when I Bowie because, really, Bowie, OK? Bowie Bowie Bowie, Bowie, but BOWIE.

Holy Crap, I blacked out. What was I talking about?

    • EscapedConvent says:

Well, *somebody’s* been eavesdropping on the Internets. Tilda & Bowie together! It’s about !@#$-ing time!

Now all that remains is for Tilda to play Bowie in a film about his life.

*twirls hair around index finger, imagines Tilda as Ziggy Stardust….*

Not to mention The Hunger. Very clever, but I think Bowie resembles Edward and James Fox now.

Bowie AND Tilda Swinton? I need a moment. 😀
Has somebody been peeking at my Christmas wish list?

    Brilliant!!!

of course it’s awesome, is there really any question?

  5. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

He is one of the all time great male style icons, along with Bryan Ferry.

  6. Eleonor says:

    AWESOME.

  7. Jess V says:

Awesome video. The song wasn’t his best but glad he’s back!

  8. sy says:

Bowie resambles Richard Chamberlain. But this colaboration is great too.

oh Ziggyception! ever since i discovered tildastardust on tumblr, i’ve been wishing. and now, it’s even better than i imagined. coming to the music… well Bowie has been better, but even Bowie-not-so-better is still heads and shoulders above the rest.

  10. bns says:

I don’t know who I’m more jealous of.

  11. Eve says:

    AWESOME!

On a second note: I don’t think that woman in a white suit (with slicked hair) is Swinton. Looks like a model I’ve seen before, but whose name I can’t remember.

  12. Wif says:

I found it disappointing, except for the scenes where Swinton is kissing Bowie.

  13. cheesecake says:

    David and Tilda???
Somewhere out there an entire planet just exploded!!! And I think my panties exploded too…

    Attention!!!

This is how it’s done Earthlings!!!

I finally watched an Italian film starring Swinton during the Oscars (much more interesting). I had never seen a performance of hers before. Now I understand why so many swoon over her. Her acting was incredible (and she spoke only Italian!) and she’s just so damn visually interesting.

I saw Bowie live during his “Serious Moonlight” tour in 1983. It remains one of my favorite concert memories.

What genius, to put the two of them together.

    • lower-case deb says:

was that film I Am Love?
she played a Russian who lives in Italy. so not only she spoke the dialog in Italian, she had to do it convincingly with a Russian accent. it was a tour de force of acting. i was sad that it didn’t win the Academy for Foreign Film, but from what i heard the win was deserved for the other film (didn’t know, hadn’t seen what it was though).

  15. Vivian says:

Epic; plain and simple. Cool collab.

  16. fabgrrl says:

BOWIE/SWINTON?!!?!? This may be the awesomest thing EVER!

  17. Xera says:

I used to like Bowie but his latest videos show it’s always been about his appearance, the previous one with his deformed face filmed like a puppet caricaturing his aging face to make his real aging more acceptable by contrast, and here where all the shots are angles of his former cheekbones and jaw line in all the characters…no song to remember

    • KAI says:

If you really believe what you wrote, you must know absolutely nothing about David Bowie and his contribution to popular music.

      • Xera says:

I meant his last songs are not memorable, otherwise he has a few good ones butI wouldn’t call him an “important contributor” to popular music, he mostly managed to work with the right collaborators – ok his choice – but his main creative input seems to be the personas he’s adopted

    • Malificent says:

Actually, I really loved that one shot in the middle where it’s just Bowie’s face from straight on. And he just looks like an old man. Not even a totally cool old man trying to artfully work around his age. Just an aging face. He looks beautiful in that shot.

    • Nutter says:

      Dumb opinion. Next.

  18. Mindy says:

I’ve been a huge Bowie fan forever, although I wasn’t a big fan of his ‘later’ stuff until recently, but now, I actually prefer his stuff from the 90’s on (Seven is a song that brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it). This song fits in well with his ‘later’ stuff. I’ve been listening to it constantly for the last day and he sounds back in fighting form and even though it may not be everyone’s favorite – it sounds 1,000 better to my ears than the drivel Justin Timberlake has come up with for his ‘comeback.’ I can’t WAIT for March 12, when Bowie’s new album comes out.

As for Bowie’s looks.. well.. I think he looks GREAT. I don’t care that his features have softened – excuse me.. he’s 66 years old!

Oh and the video with Tilda? PERFECT. Perfectly odd… very Bowie, very Tilda. Bet you they had loads of FUN making it.

    • fabgrrl says:

I think he looks great too! I hope my husband ages that well.

    • bob says:

I can’t remember who it was but someone said that Bowie, like The Beatles, is just further along than the rest of us. It takes a while for us to catch up with them but isn’t it fantastic when we do.

  19. RHONYC says:

    TILDA & BOWIE FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!

    *faints onto desk*

    😯 😯 😯

  20. Powerpoint says:

The woman pictured in the white suite and the Bowie hair isn’t Tilda. She’s a supermodel named Iselin Steiro.

  21. MyLeNe - Montreal says:

    I LOVE that !

  22. FassDaActor says:

I’ve been waiting for this moment. They’re like twins and I love both of them. Two smart, super styish and talented people.

  23. I Choose Me says:

The song was okay but that video was a ball of crazy awesome.

SWINTON fascinates me to no end.

  24. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I lots respect for Swinton when she signed that Roman Polanski petition. But I love Bowie.

  25. skuddles says:

I think the vid is fantastic but I’m not crazy about the song itself.

Tilda reminds me a lot of Bowie’s first wife Angie…

  26. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

I LOVE it! Bowie can do no wrong in my book. Saw him in concert a few years back now and he was AMAZING.

  27. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Christmastime, can it be?

  28. Nutter says:

Nowhere is Trent Reznor listed in the credits for “Earthling”. So saying they collaborated on that album is a stretch. There was a connection though: NIN toured with David Bowie on the “Outside” album–the one preceding “Earthling”. Mr. Reznor did a bunch of remixes of the track “I’m Afraid of Americans” and appeared the video.

  29. Nutter says:

    MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I just saw the comment suggesting that David Bowie wasn’t an “important contributor” to popular music.

Why do ignorant people offer their ignorant opinions regarding stuff they don’t even care about?
