Ellie Goulding in a sheer ruffled nightie with platform sneakers: ridiculous or fun?

Can you imagine if it was a key part of your job to show up to events looking ridiculous so that people would talk about you? There are several singers who do this regularly, and at least three of them were at the Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball in London over the weekend. (There were some more British stars there who also probably use this tactic, but I didn’t recognize them.) Here’s Ellie Goulding, in what looks like a perfectly acceptable workout or performance outfit (white crop top, white high waist shorts) with a sheer ruffled nightgown over it. Look at her expression it’s like she’s saying “I know how this looks. Whatever, I’m comfortable.” I appreciate her bemused approach. Plus those platform sneakers and giant rhinestone earrings are a nice touch. Ellie is sporting an impressive rock on her hand. I forgot/didn’t care that she’s engaged to an art dealer who works for Sothebys. I wonder what kind of wedding dress she’ll wear and if she’ll go traditional or outrageous.

Speaking of outrageous, here’s Rita Ora, who once used to look as out of place as Ellie but is now kind of owning it. At some recent point Rita transitioned from fug as hell to way overdressed for events. (I should say she vacillates from fug to overdressed because she still dresses fug often.) Rita is wearing Moschino, which I know because this is the very look that Kendall Jenner modeled on the runway this fall. I would wear the hell out of those tights, but I would wear them with a plain outfit and let the tights do the talking. I would love to see Rita out with Andrew Garfield. They’re maybe a thing now.

Halsey was there, and in terms of looking bad she usually phones it in, like she’s half-assing the fuggery while Rita is the queen. Halsey wore her best silver Sandy from Grease pants along with an artfully half open half-tucked in shirt with her bra showing. She really needed to button that shirt one button off to complete the look. That star shirt is really cute though, I would wear that. Her hair is so choppy and uneven it looks like one of those first grade haircuts given by an overtired mom but that’s as deliberate as her hanging shirt. Somehow she still looks gorgeous. How does she do that?

I actually like Rita’s look. Her performance was pretty good too.

    • Chaine says:

I like it too, her face is looking kinda botoxy though.

    • Jensies says:

I like the Moschino look, but Jeremy Scott unapologetically copied that whole line from Edda Gimnes. There’s been a lot written on it. So she looks cute, but that line is trash.

  2. Lolly says:

I really wish Little Mix broke America. Also, I don’t understand Halsey.

  3. Snowflake says:

Elle’s outfit is ugly. Cant stand those white clunky shoes. They remind me of nurse’s shoes

    • BchyYogi says:

I’m sorry, just looks like me in my depressed, hungover try-hard days of the whacky rave 90s’ era, tho pre social media, thank Gawd.

  4. Erinn says:

Ahaha, I actually like Rita’s whole look. But especially the tights.

I liked Ellie Goulding briefly. And then I started reading interviews, and that dumb 50 Shades song came out, and I couldn’t stand her. She’s 31, so older than I am, and her complaining gets grating. And there’s a way to wear something ridiculous and still look like you tried. She just looks like she rolled around in tulle. Ezra miller can dress outrageously and look good. Rita managed to do it here. Halsey looks like a mess – but in a way that she can pull off. Ellie just looks kind of dumb, honestly.

Oh Ellie honey, who busted your face like that? Get a refund, girl. (can you get refunds for fillers/Botox etc?)

She was such a cutie when she first started out around 2010, now she looks like every other wannabe IG shill.

    • Nichole says:

My place, which is in the top 10 for volume of Botox in the country, does free touch-ups after 2 weeks if you’re not happy. They’ll note on your chart “x additional units” and work with that during your next regular appointment. I think a refund is a bit much because the product has been used, but they have a great rep and solid social media and I wouldn’t say they’re above it if someone made a lot of noise.

      • Jewell says:

Oh cool, so kinda like a haircut? In the sense that you can go back and they’ll tweak it if you’re unhappy.

At any rate, Ellie needs to lay off the fillers or pick a different doctor’s office.

  6. Beth says:

Sneakers are a lot more comfortable than heels, but they look ridiculous with that tacky dress

  7. Anastasia says:

As a former 80s teen, I love Rita’s outfit. Everything else is kind of fug.

  8. Haha Muntz says:

That hair colour really does not work with Rita Ora’s skin tone. She should go darker.

  9. Veronica says:

It’s the shoes I can’t handle with Elle’s dress. Those chunky sneakers are hideous on everyone.

Rita Ora’s dress works because it’s on the red carpet. You’d need to tone it down and pick either the dress or tights on the street, but otherwise, I like it.

    All big NOPES to me.

  11. Ellie says:

Not feeling Ellie’s choice of shoes but I kind of like the outfit (believe it or not). I think it’s different and fun.
