Duchess Meghan has ‘absolutely no plans to relaunch The Tig,’ thanks Kate

The Wimbledon Championships 2019

Fans of the Duchess of Cambridge were super-grateful that FINALLY someone acknowledged all of Kate’s keen work with the Duchess of Sussex’s successful Smart Set launch. I’m sure those Kate fans are still waiting for Kate to get credit for the Hubb Community cookbook too, as well as the successful guest-editorship of British Vogue. But in the meantime, there’s been a movement to recognize all of Kate’s achievements over the years – you can follow the hashtag #KateMiddletonSuccessStory to see more:

Meanwhile, as we also discussed briefly yesterday, the Duchess of Sussex is keeping the rights to “The Tig” trademark. Meghan’s lawyer filed all of those papers recently, and there was some conversation that Meghan could possibly re-launch her lifestyle blog. I theorized that it was far more likely that Meghan simply wanted to retain all of the rights to The Tig so no one else would buy it and start doing stuff in her name. And that’s what it was:

Meghan Markle won’t be returning to her lifestyle guru days anytime soon. The Duchess of Sussex’s business manager Andrew Meyer recently filed documents in the United States for Meghan to keep the rights for her now-defunct lifestyle site The Tig until 2021, prompting speculation that the royal may be relaunching it. (A website named Tigtots was also trademarked, with some speculating that the new mom may be creating a spin-off based on motherhood.)

However, a palace spokesperson tells PEOPLE that there are “absolutely no plans to relaunch The Tig.”

“The lasting trademark is to prevent false branding, to avoid others purporting to be the Duchess or affiliated with her,” the spokesperson says.

[From People]

I’m not sure if people remember this, but soon after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got married, they also trademarked a sh-tload of stuff associated with their names and titles. There was conversation then that Kate might do a commercial line or something gauche like that. But no – this is pretty common in celebrity and royal circles at this point. People just trademark everything around their name just so other people can’t do sh-t using their name. Thank you, Kate, for all of your legal help on this issue.

That hashtag LMAO that it’s the result of the Cambridges PR campaign: Kate ridiculed everywhere. It’s what she deserves.

    • BEBE says:

I think this is a little harsh. We don’t assume that Meghan is behind negative stories about Kate.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

It’s not unfair at all. Considering that we know William has actively participated in smearing his own brother and Kate participated in that little plane stunt last month I would day its perfectly fair and reasonable.

      • VS says:

@BEBE — you keep repeating this statement…..Kate willingly participated in the plane stunt; William didn’t force her to do it! she could have said NO to him. Has she no mind of her own? She is William’s partner and therefore has the ability (I hope) to make him see how nefarious his stunt was.

The day Harry does something like that and it looks like Meghan doesn’t do anything to stop him, I will say the same thing about her.

We want more Michelle Obama and less Melania Trump…..I think the statement of Meghan where she said “women should support each other and not set each other up for failure” applies to Kate in the FlyBe stunt

On your point about negative stories about Kate: Meghan has never benefited from them. Meghan is the BEST thing that happened to Kate PR

The #KateMiddletonSuccessStory wasn’t really about Kate; it was about giving the credit of a WOC work to a mediocre white woman……..so many mediocre women benefited from someone else work in the past. It is time to STOP!

      • BayTampaBay says:

With regards to Kate; ” Has she no mind of her own?”.

Probably not when it comes to bucking up against her husband.

      • VS says:

@BayTampaBay — if that’s the case, she is more Melania Trump than Michelle Obama. Kate is married to William yes, but she still has her own free will. She should have let him do his little stunt and not join him in his pettiness………..

The RF is no different from the Markles if you remove the money; why don’t they just all do their damn job instead of playing this PR game all day long?

They could all get free publicity by just working instead of trying to undermine those who want to work

      • MrsBanjo says:

When the racist articles pour in there’s silence from Kate, but the minute it’s suggested she got botox she makes a statement. She can’t be bothered to put a stop to the racist hit pieces against her SIL and actively participates in PR stunts to egg them on. Come on now.

      • kerwood says:

I think @BEBE might have a point. Kate definitely benefits from the attacks on the Duchess of Sussex. But is this her war or her husband’s? I have no doubt that William is the one who is the most pissed off at the attention that the Sussexes got and was willing to do anything to not only match that attention but to tear his brother and sister in law in the process. Is Katie as keen? We know she’s competitive but she strikes me as way to lazy to mount a campaign like this.

Kate Middleton spent 10 years chasing after William. That was her whole life; she didn’t do anything else. Who knows what she could have accomplished if she had put as much energy and effort into making something of herself. And with all the talk about her being the ‘future Queen’, she KNOWS that’s not necessarily true. A divorced man CAN take the throne. Does Keen Katie have to put up and shut up because she’s afraid of William turning on HER? IF that’s true, what kind of life must that be for her? And was it worth it?

      • Becks1 says:

Kate definitely encourages the attacks and does nothing to stop them. Or maybe I should say, she’s perfectly willing to “profit” from the attacks even if she’s not behind them. See: budget plane photo op, Kate re-wearing clothes for multiple engagements in a row when that is not typical for her (and now wearing all new clothes again), etc. She is obviously aware of the various criticisms aimed at Meghan and goes out of her way to portray herself as the opposite of those criticisms.

Kate is not powerless in her relationship with William – William holds the trump card, as it were, in that he will be king whether or not he’s married, but Kate still has a good deal of power. That’s why there is a concerted effort to keep her happy and give her orders and such.

      • kerwood says:

        @Becks1, I don’t disagree. I was just playing devil’s advocate.

Imagine devoting your life to landing a complete jerk and knowing that you’re one temper tantrum (or Rose bush) away from losing it all.

I don’t have any respect for Kate Middleton and what feelings I do have are turning into contempt.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I do not think Bill Normal will ever divorce Cathy but I do believe he will continue to cultivate English Roses as I have heard it bantered about that he is very keen on many types of cultivation.

      • Becks1 says:

@kerwood – yeah, I’m with you. Like I said I don’t think she is without power, but she does know that her position is not 100% secure and while she will always be the mother of the future king, if they divorced she would be sidelined fairly quickly.

@Bay you crack me up. “keen on many types of cultivation” lol. More details please!! And I agree that I doubt there will be a divorce. But, stranger things have happened.

      • Megan says:

We have no idea what conversations Meghan has had with BP and KP over the press attacks. It looks to me like Meghan is taking the long view and staying out of the fray. If anyone in the BRF responds, it will launch a new feeding frenzy.

      • Miss America says:

        What negative press?

    • Bella DuPont says:

Far, far too many of these types of attacks have happened with the Cambridge’s openly benefitting (see convenient budget flight (s) after the Sussexes PJ palava) for it to be coincidence. They’re not even hiding their tactics anymore.

I think they’re at low level guerrilla warfare at this stage.

      • lucy2 says:

I dismissed it all as tabloid nonsense until the plane stuff. That was far too obvious, and I don’t even follow the royals all that much.

      • Pants says:

I was the same with dismissing lots of it as tabloid nonsense until the plane. But I still hate that pitting women against each other is the go to tactic.

    • M. says:

The reality is that she’s not being ridiculed everywhere. She’s being ridiculed by a concentrated hive of fans on social media. Most people don’t know or care about that hashtag, and it’s not going to stop reporters from writing negative stories about Meghan or other POC. Boycott those tabloids and reporters. Send letters to advertisers. Stop retweeting negative and racist articles.

      • Bella DuPont says:

        @ M

        Couldn’t agree more.

      • Jen says:

Some people are also completely misunderstanding the hashtag and feel it is belittling the accomplishments of the WoC featured in the different stories. I’m like “That’s kind of the point.”

      • Mego says:

I checked it out and it does seem to be a small group of people making those tweets. Hopefully the article in question won’t get much attention from readers.

      • M. says:

I think the misunderstanding comes from the fact that most people are unaware of Phil Dampier’s trashy article. That hashtag is not going to make sense to a lot of people. Also, Twitter can be an echo chamber. Just because my followers think a topic is important or funny doesn’t mean that everyone else on social media will agree. A lot of hashtags go viral every day and either very little or no changes happen.

      • Princeling says:

I thought this #KateMiddletonSuccessStory was really a thing, but it is pretty much ignored on twitter.

    • Bamaborn says:

That was some serious shade on twitter yesterday! Maybe it will cause some people to back off some of this foolishness they dream up.

    • Anance says:

I just had to include that while time traveling through old blues clubs, Kate gave Billie Holiday to wear a flower in her hair.
      #katemiddletonsucessstory

  2. OriginalLala says:

The #KateMiddletonSuccessStory hashtag is hilarious! some posts had me snorting out loud

    • Kittycat says:

      I love the hashtag

    • Marjorie says:

I know right? But also one poster on that thread pointed out that Kate keeps getting participation awards, which is the most succinct description of her life I’ve read. She gets trophies for walking around in clothes.

    • Himmiefan says:

I can’t decide which on is my favorite, Kate in the Jackson Five, helping Harriet Tubman, or being Michelle Obama.

    • PlainJane says:

It had me snorting out loud too! I even had to show my man, and he couldn’t stop laughing! So glorious!! And @Himminefan, right there with you, AND Kate as Serena Williams!

  3. Claire says:

Do you think Kate will ever get her comeuppance or will she forever be benefiting from Meghan’s successes and perceived failures simply because she is the white Duchess? btw Twitter is hilarious

    • stepup says:

      Unfortunately, nothing will change.

However! When Charles takes over, I could…maybe…see him saying something — or, at least, strongly signaling his disapproval for how the press treats Meghan. Right now, he’s staying super quiet — which, while not brave, is his best PR strategy. (Didn’t say it was right ethically, but from a PR perspective…it’s the safest for HIM.)

But I can see him speaking up for Meghan, and strongly taking her corner, once he’s got the crown firmly atop his head.

      • A says:

I think that the majority of the reason for the RF’s poor response is that this has essentially BEEN their media strategy for decades. Say nothing, do nothing when it comes to egregious attacks, unless absolutely necessary. The fact that they lump such racism with every other type of press intrusion is their fundamental failing imo. They cannot treat this any differently and hope it just goes away, and they can’t just ignore the press into behaving better. Something must be done.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Why would she? The monarch and heirs can do whatever they want (see Andrew) and there’s nothing anybody can do about it, because they “earned” the right by virtue of their birth alone.
That’s the price of having a monarchy.

  4. ByTheSea says:

    LOL. Twitter has no chill.

  5. Becks1 says:

#KateMiddletonSuccessStory was hilarious. I hope it made even a few people realize how ridiculous it is to connect Kate to the Smart Set launch in any way.

  6. Beli says:

The hashtag is hilarious! Finally, Kate’s getting the recognition she deserves for all those black women’s achievements!

It would be lovely if Kate were to attend an engagement wearing something from the Smart Set. Not only would it be a public shoe of support for Meghan against all the nastiness, but she’d get praised to the high heavens in the press for it. More than Meghan was praised for putting the actual work in, for sure. There are absolutely no downsides for her.

Keeping the Tig trademarked makes sense. Not only might other people look to profit by pretending to be associated with a royal, but there are a lot of malicious people out there when it comes to Meghan in particular.

    • Kittycat says:

If Kate showed up to work wearing a smart set suit i would be impressed.

    • Erinn says:

I think it’d be very wise for Kate to do that – and she’d look great in some of those pieces, so triple win for her.

Honestly, I’d really like to see the two of them do a joint event. Maybe something to do with new mothers, or post partum depression related, or something in that kind of realm. Now of course they don’t have to do that – but it would be nice to see.

And I agree re: the trademarks. It’d be foolish not to have done this. There’s so many people that would love to benefit from her name, monetarily, or whatever. It only makes sense that she would do this and I’m glad she’s thought to.

      • Enn says:

Erinn, I am often thankful for your thoughtful and reasonable comments.

      • Green Desert says:

Erinn, I think that’s the problem though. It seems like Kate WOULDN’T do this. I said on a thread yesterday that the Cambridges don’t write the articles, but they benefit from them. Their silence on the daily Meghan attacks in the British media is telling. People of color have been dealing with this sh*t forever, and I think the Twitter thread is absolutely justified. It would be great if Kate or William would show support or call out the attacks and I hope it happens, I’m just not holding my breath at this point.

    • VS says:

I don’t expect her to……..the Smart Set collection is not really her style either.

To be frank, I don’t want her to be associated with anything Meghan does. The royal gossipers will just turn her into sainthood; Meghan is perfectly able to drive her projects; she doesn’t need Kate.

It would be great if Camilla or Beatrice or Eugenie or Sophie wear one of the pieces; that will show actual and true support

    • Bella DuPont says:

      @ Beli

I would eat my largest leather hand-bag if Kate did this. She would never, even if there are no down-sides for her. The reason is, there would be too many upsides for DOS!

In my eyes, these two women are in clear competition, with the DOC apparently determined to at least match (and if possible surpass) the DOS’s efforts. Many women on this site understandably hate admitting it, because it’s such a damaging scenario for women, yet, it’s the sad truth. (In my admittedly very limited perspective, anyway).

      • VS says:

@Bella DuPont — why now? She had a 7 or more so years head start she should have built a huge legacy by now……….in less than 2 years, Meghan surpassed what she has ever accomplished since being in the RF circle.

She cannot surpass or even reach Meghan’s level. Comparing Meghan to Kate is doing a disservice to Meghan. Those two don’t live on the same planet (I borrowed this from Twitter). That poster was right, the two cannot be compared

I just wish gossipers will let Kate be Kate and let Meghan be Meghan. Meghan looks like a resilient woman, I don’t think she can easily be push around or turn into someone afraid to say anything in public to avoid criticism

      • kerwood says:

But the Duchess of Cambridge isn’t willing to match the Duchess of Sussex’ achievements in WORK. She’ll get on a budget plane or wear some off the rack dress and the press will slap a halo on her. And that seems to be enough for her. But there’s nothing that I’ve seen that shows the Duchess of Cambridge is willing to work as hard as the Duchess of Sussex is working. That’s the most offensive part of this whole thing and why I don’t think I’ll ever like Keen Katie. She knows that all she has to do is show up and be a White woman. And she’s willing to play that game.

      • Bella DuPont says:

        @ VS

100% agreed. I don’t think Meghan really sees herself as being in competition with Kate necessarily, mainly because Kate doesn’t have a huge track record TO compete with in the first place. But competition isn’t always a two way street. You can compete with someone who doesn’t even know you exist. Kate clearly sees herself in competition with Meghan.

        @ Kerwood

        100% agree again.

I believe in addition to the obvious PR and the clear shade (budget flights), she also employs some far more surreptitious schemes….for instance, there are far too many attack pieces coming from Cambridge linked publications (Tatler’s s great example).

And then we have the revelation that William may have covertly supported portions of the media wrt the Markle attacks. To the extent of seemingly endorcing media awards for the most vicious/damaging take-downs.

It’s all hands on deck with them, watching the Sussexes every move, and then matching, competing and undermining where possible. Eg: the very conveniently timed budget clothes and flights, the sudden interest in speech giving, the sudden comfort in sharing intimate family moments (in pictures that would have previously resulted in heavy threats and lawsuits)…..just off the top of my head.

Cambridges are like a nice pair of ducks (three, if you count head-honcho, Ma Middleton)…..all serenity and tranquility above the water, but paddling like crazy below it.

  7. M. says:

My wish is for Meghan to be left alone without being abused and maligned by the media and internet trolls. I don’t care much about the other royals, and I think monarchies are outdated institutions that need to end, but I also hate how these two couples are pitted against each other. “Nobody wins when the family feuds.”

  8. (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

While I don’t think Kate was the one actively trying to *start* this “embiggening”, I don’t think she’s doing anything to stop it, either. (Cammie is being buried like she’s NOT next in line. Forgotten Future Queen: Cammie Who?)

What is really so damned sad is all it would take is a couple of private or better yet, public words from TQ or Charles, or even William (and perhaps even Kate) to the RRs to cut this shit out! Show some real support. Guess it’s too much to ask of that family. They can support a pedo though.

Thing is, even if they weren’t “gung-ho” before the wedding, even if they thought it was too fast, you’d think that seeing how very happy Harry is, and how much Meg is actually DOING for The Firm, actually getting in there and doing more than just showing up for a 45 min. dog and pony show, they’d see how much she of an asset she is.

    • BayTampaBay says:

@(TheOG)@Jan90067, I think part of the problem is there are many in the commentariat of the Daily Fail who cannot stand Meghan. The reasons for not liking Meghan varies poster to poster. But the main thrust is that Meghan needs to be exorcised to Hollywood (and Andrew stripped of everything then exorcised with Fergie to Switzerland). . It seems to me that The Daily Fail is the paper the BRF plays ball with. Maybe Bill Normal & Charles do not want to upset The Daily Fail RRs? This is just a theory.

With regards to QEII, I do not think she gives the gossip and lies regarding Meghan a moment of thought as she really does not see it as important in the long run. Think about how long the Charles & Diana gossip went on. This is just a theory.

      • one of the Marys says:

I think it’s all about outshining William and Kate. That’s the problem, that’s the threat, that’s at the root of all the shenanigans. I see it all through that lens.
The dislike of her I put down to racism and classism. W & K don’t do anything to counter that publicly because they benefit from it.
This past year must have been very difficult for Harry. His reaction reads like he is bitter with William in a deeply personal way, deep hurt and betrayal. William doesn’t seem the type to take responsibility for that or be motivated to resolve it either

      • (TheOG)@Jan90067 says:

Perhaps, BTB, but if there weren’t any xenophobic, racist articles for theses MAGAts (British AND American, who seem to write there, too) to respond to, their responses wouldn’t be published for them to feed off each other and keep the fires going, so to speak.

Also, there was a lot of gossip/bad press about Charles and Diana, but I don’t recall either of them getting death threats. I don’t recall anyone calling Diana the names that Meg gets, or Harry and William’s lives being threatened (or them being compared to apes). This is a whole ‘nother ball game.

So yes, I DO believe she needs to speak out. Or at the very least, put them in that damned car and drive to church with them, the way she’s signaling “approval” of Pedo Andrew.

      • VS says:

@one of the Marys ——- the Sussexes have already outshined the Cambridges.
The proof is in the pudding:
        1) Meghan and Kate at the polo game…..headlines next day: Meghan blablablablabla
        2) SM: the Cambridges now copy the Sussexes lengthy posts
        3) Meghan and Harry pay respect to NZ victims; such a tragic event was turned into a competition (my goodness). Kate was out with the QUEEN…..the rest is history
        etc…

The best thing the Cambridges can do is to ask the press to ignore the Sussexes. William really isn’t smart!

    • Erinn says:

Honest question – do we think Cam is upset about the focus on Kate? The poor woman is still ripped to shreds by Diana stans regularly. At the end of the day Cam, Charles, and Diana were all people who cheated in their relationships. But the kind of outright hatred people feel towards her is so foolish – because it’s not even justified. If you’re going to hate her for the affairs – then they should hate Diana for the same reason – because she’d admitted that she cheated as well. None of them have clean hands. But for decades Camilla has been degraded for her participation in the affair, and I do think a good portion of that hate is unfair.

I do wonder if she minds that the focus is off of her – or if she’s bothered by the focus that is put on Kate. Maybe she’s accepted that she’s going to be considered the badguy by a lot of people and just rolls with it.

      • Becks1 says:

@Erinn – I think generally she probably doesn’t mind the focus on Kate, Camilla seems smart and she knows that the younger generation is always going to pull focus, and she also probably knew that whoever “Diana’s boys” married would be the focus of a lot of media attention.

I imagine she probably does mind still being portrayed as the evil other woman, but I feel like as Diana’s memory fades that is probably fading as well. She seems well received at all her appearances.

      • Maria says:

None of the three were saints. Nevertheless Camilla never wanted to marry Charles and got the man of her choosing – Andrew Parker Bowles (quite a catch, as everyone including the Princess Royal wanted him). The affair with Charles was always a fling to her–until it wasn’t. And both were far older than Diana, and should have known better than to manipulate her the way they did in the beginning, which would have been enough to warp any marriage.
I love Camilla to death but she did act callously at times.

      • Tourmaline says:

Camilla is 72 years old. There is no way she is going to be getting lots of press when younger, childbearing royal ladies like Kate and Meghan are in the picture.

      • Lady D says:

Do you think Diana’s memory is ever going to get the chance to fade, Becks?

      • Becks1 says:

@Lady D – sure. I think there will always be a whiff of Diana nostalgia, but as people who were alive for their wedding and such get older and pass away, I think her memory will definitely fade. Now, will it fade enough for Camilla to completely escape her shadow? Probably not while Camilla is alive. but I think history will have a more objective view of the whole affair.

  9. Valiantly Varnished says:

Pretty much every black woman I know – including myself – has had this narrative play out in their professional lives. The hashtag is hilarious and I love how it backfired spectacularly.

    • Taryn says:

You are so correct, and thats why this hashtag has me in stitches. I knew it was only a matter of time for the press to come out and say Meghan owes her success as a duchess to Kate who “showed her the ways.” Kate is being massively upstaged now by a black woman and it’s driving them crazy.

    • VS says:

Exactly!!!!!! Thank you so so much for bringing this point up so clearly
How many times have we seen this happened? why aren’t they happy with Kate working so much behind the scenes? shouldn’t she be indifferent to Meghan success?

    • PlainJane says:

@Valiantly Varnished – THIS!!! Meghan is an amazing force for good, while black. People can’t deal with it. And VS, agree, if the Cambridges were living fulfilling lives, they would not care less that their family is also doing well and thriving. It’s the insecure and unhappy that tear other people down.

    • Bamaborn says:

…and there are people who think the royal families never see these post anyway. LIE. Their people keep up with what’s trending on social media. If poor Louis XVI and Csar Nicholas had had social media in their day, their fate may have been different. So they know!

  10. Tw says:

Her hair was so beautiful at the US Open.

  11. Jj says:

Just thought that it is appropriate to give a shout out here to Lilly Singh as I don’t see any article here. She is first bisexual, woman of color late night host with large TV network. She just launched a little late with Lilly Singh and she accomplished it all without prestigious university background or any man to support her.

    • Yoyo says:

Why not post it at Twitter.
They’re talking about black women, Google to find out who Lily Singh is.
In case you were talking about Meghan, who worked her ass off to get where she was before she meet Harry.
What prestigious universities have to do with a woman getting a TV show?
Women World wide have been Working to get ahead, going to college, working and raising children some without help from men.
      So hooray for Lily Singh.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

You thought a thread about Meghan Markle was the appropriate place to post this?? You were wrong.

    • Lady D says:

You thought slamming Meghan was propping up Lilly?

    • Gingerbee says:

Meow, that jj person just had to get dig in at Meghan.

  12. TheOriginalMia says:

That hashtag had me laughing and snorting. Black woman gives 110% to her charities and a mediocre white woman who isn’t giving a tenth of that support to hers is given credit. Oh, hell no. I truly enjoyed that hashtag and hope it got back to KP. I hope they realize how ridiculous this embiggening project is and actually push for Kate to do more. I doubt it, so more #KateMiddletonsuccessstory.

Knew it was a move to protect the Tig from being used by others. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have enjoyed the overreaction of the RRs if she did relaunch it.

  13. DS9 says:

I do not blame Kate for that article linking Meghan’s success to Kate.

I do blame her for having accomplished so little of substance or value in her years as William’s wife that the internet can’t pick out much to show her work.

Maybe William would not have permitted her to launch true working initiatives. But surely her could not have or would not have prevented more benign appearances.

But honestly, I don’t believe that. William would not have wanted a truly miserable wife. Kate is doing what she wants here, which is as little as she can get away with.

    • A says:

Look…if Kate wanted to, she could pick up the phone, speak to the editor, and tell them under no certain terms that she didn’t exactly care for the article, the narrative is all wrong, and it does a disservice to Meghan and the RF to publish such egregious drivel day in and day out. She has the power to do that. The fact that she doesn’t speak out says a great deal about her. As other people have said, she might not be writing these articles, but she’s not going out there and putting a stop to them either. And that silence speaks volumes.

this site has as many conspiracy theories about kate as the daily mail does about meghan, lol

  15. Fernanda says:

Some of you seem to know so much about the thoughts and feelings of William and Kate. And Meghan too! Where do you get this info?

    • Lady D says:

Look up the word gossip, Fernanda.

      • Harrierjet says:

“casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details which are not confirmed as true.” A definition which makes me laugh when gossip is discussed as if its the gospel truth here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I personally like to think Kate and Meghan’s relationship is far simpler, and far less malicious then reported to be. That’s the thing about gossip – we will never know.

    • @Fernanda. Clearly we make it up as we go along. Pick a favorite ( you can’t not pick sides) then take whatever article that is written and add your own conspiracy. It helps if you profess insight into motivations that you ascribe to individual parties and keep repeating until it becomes taken as fact.

      • Excuse my ignorance please but I have a genuine question.

The 1 drop rule confuses me. Meghan who identifies an ‘other’ is regarded as black by both her critics and fans. I mean I can understand why racists would call her that (1 drop rule) but why do us, people can see her for herself and what she brings to the table, people who any other time would respect and validate her experiences as an other– that’s what she identifies as. Why do we insist on seeing her in the same racial lense as racists?

      • DS9 says:

Skeptical, what other? When has Meghan not identified as black?

And who has ever identified as “other”? Even Tiger Woods called himself caublasian.

      • @ds9: by other I mean biracial. She has an article on Elle. Beautifully written.

      • kerwood says:

@Skeptical You can understand why racists would call her Black? Because being called Black is such a terrible thing?

This is the same argument that was brought up about President Obama. Some people couldn’t understand why he would choose to identify as Black when he could choose ‘other’. Because who would choose to be Black if they didn’t have to? The Duchess of Sussex has spoken about being bi-racial in the past. She IS bi-racial. It’s possible to be bi-racial and identify as Black.

The Duchess of Sussex has a Black mother. Her mother and her mother’s family are the only people she can count on NOT to sell her out or humiliate her.

If Meghan had any questions about her racial identity, they were answered the second it was announced that she was dating Prince Harry.

      • Joanna says:

@skeptical, it’s been passed down from older generations imo. That does not excuse it though. My husband is only a quarter black but imo he is considered black by most people. I think he gets treated that way anyway. He doesn’t get treated the same as white boyfriends I’ve had. I didn’t get dirty looks when I went out w white guys, but with my husband I do. I’m white. People assume bad things about him. He doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt. People will stare at us then turn around and look again. Be careful how you address POC too. Some people take being called other as an insult, if I were you, I would not use that term, unless you are specifically told by them that they identify as other. I usually call my husband mixed when describing him. But mixed people can identify with one side more than the other oftentimes. My husband identifies more with the black side, while his mixed daughter identifies more with the white side. Yes, I agree that mixed people should be referred to as what they identify with, not automatically called black. Sadly with the history we have, people with one drop of black were called black. I don’t even think necessarily that we think about it that way but it’s habit passed down. Obviously racists do it because they don’t want anything to do w anyone w a drop of black blood. Halle berry believes in the one drop theory, she has stated this. Even though her daughter is mixed, mom considers her to be black. Race relations are complicated, there is no one answer, and I can’t really speak for non whites because obviously I am white. But yes, imo, I think we should acknowledge all of a person’s ancestry. But in my experience, most people identify with one side or the other and would be insulted if you addressed them as other. Take your cues from each individual person. Have a good night!

      • DS9 says:

Biracial does not mean not black. Nor does it mean other. Biracial is merely a descriptor of being black.

At least it is for me as I’m biracial.

I am biracial, yes but I am a black woman and I exist in black skin with the same history, experiences, and subject to the same racial discrimination as others who are not biracial.

It’s our commonalities that unite us, that make our community. The day I’ll be not black or other is the day I don’t have to live under the threat of black stereotypes, the day my brown skinned sons have the same outcome percentages and risks as white kids.

There is a certain privilege to being biracial, to having light skinned but it doesn’t make me just like white people, nor does it shield me from racism.

I am biracial but I am a black woman.

I haven’t seen anything that indicates Meghan doesn’t exist in a similar space.

  16. Bella Bella says:

The hashtag is so perfect!! The tweets are hilarious. I especially love the slapdash photoshopping. Kate as Oprah with HAIR is the bomb.

  17. Digital Unicorn says:

While the hashtag was amusing, surely KP and the Cambridges have to see how bad this makes them look? They are enabling the tabloids racism towards Meghan by allowing the rags to behave like this – if they are truly serious about tackling bullying then they have to slap the Sun and others like this down. The fact that they don’t says everything.

If Kate doesn’t want to be a part of that type of narrative she needs to shut it down.

  18. You guys spend way too much energy on Kate. Too much. You’re consumed by everything about her, her hair, clothes, shoes, engagements, diction. What is it is in you that reacts so violently towards her?

    • kerwood says:

Because she’s a lazy, entitled woman whose only accomplishment in life is being used by her mother to land an unpleasant jerk who doesn’t seem to have much respect for her, in order to give her family a leg up the social ladder, which they’ve climbed very eagerly. Yet she’s praised to the skies simply because she isn’t Black. A woman who gets that much praise should have a little more to show for it than that.

I laugh at her diction and her attempt to sound ‘posh’. As for her hair and clothes, I find it amazing how a woman with so much money and designers all over the world ready to dress her, can look so dowdy, so often.

      • Gingerbee says:

Bravo Kerwood. You summed it up perfectly.

      • There are women like MM: Passionate and driven by social change. They’ll take any and every opportunity to push that. I like that about her– she’s unafraid and much bigger than the box she’s in rn. She is/will do great.

And then there are women like Kate. Damn right she’s a social climber, she couldn’t have gotten to the upper echelon of society by being lazy. Maybe her passion was William amd through him she got what she wanted– what’s wrong what? Why are we looking to demean simply bc her choices are not what we would take or what we think she should have taken? Where do we draw the line between respecting other women’s choices and castrating them bc their choices are “less”?

You would probably do more if you had her platform, right? You would be the voice of the people, a game changer. Something like that. You can call her out for doing the bare minimum but you guys are brutal. I hope I never have the energy to react to someone like that.

      • Maria says:

She can do absolutely whatever she wants, whether that’s only targeting William or not, taking whatever choices she wants –on her own funds, if she doesn’t want to work for it.
Kate is not a private citizen and her “choice” to not work is what contrasts to Meghan.

    • Because she’s clearly a social climber who hit the pinnacle of climbing. She wears what she likes, has some cute kids, never has to worry about paying rent or healthcare and has good hair. Oh and she hasn’t “accomplished” things other people think she should… and she doesn’t seem to give a damn. Hence she must be vilified .

  19. Le4Frimaire says:

All this craziness. I already have royal fatigue. The nasty royal reporters are exhausting, take no responsibility and then hide when stuff like this blows up. They’re the ones who decided to have a U.K. version of the culture wars by completely trying to undermine, gaslight and ruin the life of Harry’s wife because she won’t let them degrade her to their satisfaction. I don’t feel remotely sorry for Mumsy Kate, she’s the cat who has the cream and knows it, even if it’s slightly curdled.

    • kerwood says:

@Le4Frimaire, Well said. I think you hit the nail square on the head when you said that it bothers them that ‘Harry’s wife’ won’t let them degrade her. If she burst into tears and begged the people of Great Britain to love and accept her, there would be a ticker tape parade (or the British equivalent) because they had ‘broken the Negress’. She won’t give them that and it’s driving them crazy. To the point where they’re overlooking the crimes of a pedophile and singing the praises of a woman that they didn’t much like a couple of years ago.

  20. @Kerwood: White people have an inherent dislike for anything that’s associated with black. I understand that they’d have a problem w MM simply her mom is black. It’s not surprising to me.

My question, or whatever it was was based solely on her racial identity before. I don’t think and I don’t hope that she hasn’t changed how she sees herself simply bc other people see her otherwise.

Nothing wrong w being black. It’s a haunting experience, it scares the livinv daylights out of me sometimes. That we are crucified and defiled simply bc we are what we are, I would not wish that on anyone.

    • Yoyo says:

I’m not buying what you are trying to sell.

    • intheknow says:

      “what we are”
What???? vs Who we are?? I am not a ‘what’. But nice try

    • OriginalCarol says:

Lmao, that last sentence showed me who you are. Racism much.

      • Yes. Racist. Bc being black means I have the power to be that, funny. I’ve stated that I am black and South African in some convos about the usefulness of charities in Africa.
But I have nothing to prove to you.

In any case, I wanted clarity on that. Bc racial identities seem to be much different where I am from. White = white, black = african, mixed= colored. A person could be colored but culturally black bc that’s how they are raised. Or black and identify as colored bc again, culture.

You take offense at me saying “what we are” bs “who we are” , thats okay. Wrong choice of word, maybe. It doesn’t make me less black than you are.

Meghan makes Kate look boring and basic.
