There are concerns about ‘politicizing’ the royals taking the coronavirus vaccine

The Queen attends a ceremony to mark her Official Birthday

Last week, we heard that Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will all take the coronavirus vaccine, and they’ll likely publicize themselves actually getting the shot(s) too, with either photos or videos. The point was that President-elect Joe Biden’s biggest task on Day 1 will be organizing the vaccine rollout and no one has time for any Anti-Vaxx bulls–t. Public figures who inspire trust in general will be called on to publicize their vaccine shots. This is news to Queen Elizabeth, who seemed to refuse to publicize whether or not she would get vaccinated. Well, Liz and Phil are in the highest-priority demographic for the first round of vaccines, not because of their royal status, but because of their ages. Now it seems like Liz and Phil have been persuaded to publicize their vaccine shots whenever they happen, which will likely be within the next month.

The Queen is expected to receive the Covid-19 vaccine within weeks – and then reveal she has been given it to encourage more people to take up the vital jab. Senior sources say both the 94-year-old Monarch and Prince Philip, 99, will not get preferential treatment, but will instead ‘wait in line’ during the first wave of injections reserved for the over-80s and care home residents. Both are expected to accept the offer of the injection on the advice of their doctors.

Public health experts believe that if the couple go public about the jab, it could go a long way to combating misinformation spread by conspiracy theorists which, it’s feared, could lead to a substantial proportion of the population refusing the vaccine.

Discussions are also under way about the potential roles that could be played by Prince Charles and Prince William in publicising the vaccination programme. But courtiers are wary that doing so might be seen as ‘politicising’ the family, as well as amounting to an invasion of their medical privacy.

However, the participation of the Queen in backing the jabs would be seen as a rallying cry to the nation. In 1957, she let it be known that Charles and Princess Anne had been given polio jabs to counter fears about the vaccine. The possible role of the Royals is being discussed at Buckingham Palace and in Whitehall, where officials are debating whether widely respected celebrities such as Sir David Attenborough and Dame Judi Dench could also be deployed as public cheerleaders for the vaccine.

To avoid any accusations of favouritism, senior members of the Royal Family will be offered the vaccine at the same time as others in their age groups. It means the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are unlikely to be vaccinated until next year when those in their 30s are invited for jabs. Sources last night said the couple ‘are keen to support everyone who has been involved’.

[From The Daily Mail]

They literally don’t have to even check in with Kensington Palace at this point, the media can just assume that the reaction to every positive story is “William and Catherine are very keen” and the reaction to every negative story is “William is incandescent with rage.” As for the Keens… it probably would help to ensure trust among all demographics for the entire royal family to announce that they’ll take the vaccine and follow the government’s protocols. It’s insane to me that public figures supported by taxpayers would ever get to claim “medical privacy” about something like this. Like, no one is asking about a duchess’s pap smears, all anyone needs to know is if the royals will get vaccinated, it’s that simple. William is also super-eager to change the subject away from how he completely concealed his own bad case of coronavirus for months.

How on earth has receiving a vaccine to a deadly virus become, in any way, “political?!”

JFC these people are exhausting with their bullsh!t; they need to get over themselves, fast.

I also fail to see how this in any way deserves consideration of “medical privacy” — it’s not a condition or a diagnosis ffs.

    • LittlePenguin says:

@Lorelei you took the words out of my mouth.
      Let’s all say it together!
      A VACCINE IS NOT POLITICAL.

    • Lorelei says:

Also! One would think that considering how recently William concealed his own case of Covid, resulting in a total clusterfck of derision and criticism, that “medical privacy” isn’t something the courtiers would want to redraw attention to right now…?

It continues to astonish me how their advisers are totally inept at every turn. Just completely wrong at all times about everything.

It would almost be impressive, if I thought that maybe they were actively trying to sabotage W&K from the inside. In that case they’re extremely effective.

    • Gruey says:

I think they lean anti vax and don’t want to get it. Just a hunch.

    • OnceUponA says:

      WTF? Viruses are not political.

The world has lost its collective sanity

That said, respect and love to the 90-yr-old British woman who got the first vaccine today.

May she stay healthy and strong.

  2. Mignionette says:

    Oh it’s like that now….

So that would imply that taking the vaccine IS political.

Why don’t these grifters just admit they don’t want to be guinea pigs like the rest of us.

  3. Kalana says:

I’m going to take the vaccine.

That being said, a photo of a person getting an injection doesn’t mean I believe that person got the vaccine. President Obama drank the water at Flint and showed how much trust we should put in these stunts.

    • Lorelei says:

@Kalana ITA. If anyone is relying on a celebrity for medical guidance in the first place, well…

But since we live in a world where apparently celebrities getting the vaccine might encourage others to — no matter how insane I personally think that is — the head of state should absolutely set a good example and do whatever is medically recommended as quickly as possible, not wait while anonymous courtiers dither about whether or not it’s “apolitical” enough.

Good god everything is just so stupid.

The Queen getting it publicly (and Phillip ) is a PR win in my opinion – it shows faith in the process, that they trust the vaccine, and because of their ages, it doesn’t involve any “skipping the line” etc.

William getting it would be more problematic in my opinion, depending on the rules for distribution in the UK. Here in the US, the elderly/nursing home residents will get it first, then health care and other front line workers, teachers, people with underlying medical issues that would make COVID much more serious (and I think everyone in those groups gets it based on age too.) so its not just a matter of age groups. I don’t know if the UK is doing the same thing though. (I’m 38 and healthy, so I’m close to the bottom of the list for getting it, which is okay.)

    • Lorelei says:

@Becks, this is only my speculation, but if I had to bet, the entire royal family will get it immediately but they just won’t publicize anyone besides the Queen & Philip (and I guess Charles & Camilla too, since they’re also elderly) getting it; they can let the peasants think that Bill and Cathy are waiting until next year like the rest of us in their age group. But I don’t think for a minute that they would actually make them follow the same rules as us peons.

      • Nic919 says:

I just saw this after I posted my comment. I 100% agree that they are getting vaccines ASAP.

      • Becks1 says:

@Lorelei – I was thinking something similar, that I wouldn’t be surprised if the queen has already gotten it, or will get it very soon, and it wont be announced for a few more weeks/another month.

    • Nic919 says:

They are going to get the vaccine early so they can travel to Mustique in the early part of next year. They just won’t tell people until the summer, or whenever the majority of people in their 30s get the vaccine.

I don’t think the vaccine is political but the distribution of it will remind everyone that the rich can jump the line when they want something.

  5. Zaya says:

The queen getting the COVID jab is a breach of medical privacy, but MM had to update the press on her every contraction and show us Archie right away wasn’t? Gimme a break. Vaccines are apolitical.

They showed the 90 year old lady getting the first vaccine today. As well as the second – William Shakespeare – how come that wasn’t a breech of medical privacy?

And yeah, either the rf thinks vaccines are for the plebs and want to wait and see what happens or they’ll jump the line and get before everyone else, cause god anointed them after all, and they’re special.

  6. emu says:

I know ya’ll said it above, a vaccine is not political! Stopping an international pandemic is not political.

  7. Courtney B says:

Queen Victoria was publicly vaccinated to help with the antivaxx movement. Her grandmother, queen Charlotte, had her children publicly vaccinated with the smallpox vaccine.
