Taylor Swift: Kanye West hasn’t contacted me to apologize (Update)

Taylor Swift

Yes, the whole Kanye West-Taylor Swift story is happening. I keep waiting for it to die down, but this is a good example of how the aftermath of a scandal is as important as what actually happened during the scandal. I mean, the whole Kanye grabbing the mic from Taylor thing? Yes, it was so painful, it felt like forever, but in reality the whole incident was less than two minutes. The aftermath was key. Personally, I tend to think Kanye made the whole situation so much worse by how he acted in the aftermath with his half-hearted ALL CAPS non-apology. But people were already pissed, and there was always going to be a Kanye backlash. I think Kanye gets it. His apology on Leno seemed sincere enough, and I’m starting to agree with Russell Brand – no one died.

We can be more magnanimous to The A–hole Formerly Known As Kanye because we’ve gotten the signal from Taylor Swift to live and let live. Her immediate post-incident interviews were very classy, and she dropped by The View this morning to show off more of her gracious nature. Taylor admitted that Kanye hadn’t apologized to her personally, but she seemed to invite him to call her and say “Hi”.

Kanye West may have apologized publicly, but he still hasn’t said anything personally to Taylor Swift.

Swift, who appeared on The View Tuesday, said that while she would accept a face-to-face apology from the rapper – “Sure!” – he has made no effort to get in touch with her since disrupting her best female video award acceptance speech at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards.

“He has not personally reached out or anything,” she said, “but if he wanted to say hi…”

The singer explained what was going through her mind Sunday night as she watched West grab the microphone and announce that her award should have gone to Beyoncé.

“My overall thought process went something like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I won. This is awesome. Don’t trip and fall. I’m going to get to thank the fans, this is so cool … Oh, Kanye West is here! Cool haircut! What are you doing there? And then, ouch. And then, I guess I’m not going to thank the fans.’ ”

West apologized on his blog later that night, and on Monday, he told Jay Leno that he’d like to apologize to Swift in person.

“I’m not going to say that I wasn’t rattled by it,” said Swift on The View, “but I had to perform live five minutes later so I had get myself back to the place where I could perform.”

Swift said she was touched about the outpouring of support from fans and fellow singers like Kelly Clarkson, who blogged that West was “a sad human being.”

“All the artists came and showed me love and all the people Tweeting about it … all the fans … I just never imagined that there were that many people out there looking out for me, so it was really wonderful to see that people were out there defending me so I didn’t have to.”

[From People]

So, that’s the kicker. Taylor got so much more exposure and goodwill, and won more fans because of this incident than she ever would have if Kanye had just kept his drunk ass in his seat. I think it would be a nice touch for Kanye to personally call Taylor and offer his apologizes – this young woman is so classy, you know she’s already forgiven him, and they could probably have a nice conversation. If he called, she would probably ask him to send her an autograph – I get the feeling that’s the kind of sweet kid she is.

In one more related note, Us Weekly has an “exclusive” statement from Beyonce manager-father Matthew Knowles. He praises his daughter to high heaven, as if the night was all about Beyonce. It kind of sucks when Beyonce did this great, classy thing, and now her father’s out there trying to sell it, but whatever. Daddy Knowles says, “It wasn’t my decision to bring Taylor out. It was all Beyonce’s decision. I want to be clear about that. My job is to execute and come up with some ideas, but ultimately that was Beyonce’s decision. I can only say it was a proud night for me as a manager, but more importantly as a father. I’ve always said the thing that makes me most proud about Beyonce is not how many records she sold or how many plaques she has or how many awards; it’s that she’s a genuine good person. I know it’s hard for people to believe that she can really be that nice of a person, but she really is.” I believed Beyonce was a nice person until you tried to force me to think it.

UPDATE: According to sources at The View to Us Weekly, Kanye West called Taylor and personally apologized for his actions at the VMAs. Word is that she accepted his apology. Is it over now?

Here’s Taylor Swift spotted leaving her New York City hotel and shaking a fan’s hand while passing through Broadway after appearing on ABC’s ‘The View’ this morning. Images thanks to WENN.com and Mavrix.

    Kanye’s probably too embarrassed.

He seemed pretty sincere on Leno.

And it was kinda messed to be like “What would your mom think!?” but hey, it made all of that hit home for him.

I still think it’s like kicking puppies in front of first graders, but it’s true, no one died. Let’s let this one die down soon too.

And please, no race stuff. I’ve already read enough of that all over the internet. Man. Things have gotten UGLY.

    And <3 Taylor.

  2. YT says:

Word has it that he called her after her appearance on The View. He also needs to send her a trinket from a high-end jewelry store.

  3. ash says:

yeah on JustJared it says he called her after the View appearance.

  4. Iggles says:

Well said Annie! I agree 100%.

  5. ash says:

Joel McHale put it in good perspective in a recent interview…
“Being a pop culture critic, what’s your take on the whole Kanye West situation? How bad was what he did?

Well, here’s the sad part. I didn’t see it yet because I was traveling to promote ‘Community’ and ‘The Informant’… so I actually have not seen it. I always try to keep the thing in the perspective of everything — this sounds so bad — but it’s not that big of a deal. I always go back to this is pop culture, and people are starving around the world. Those are real problems. Kanye West was just incredibly rude. I know he’s been apologizing, but it was just really tacky. The poor girl [Taylor Swift] is 19-years-old. Could you imagine if Kanye West comes at you like that at any age? It seemed pretty inappropriate and I don’t have a great joke. And boy, Beyonce sure looks good and gracious.

My opinion is probably the same as everyone else’s, but darnit I do love his music. It was just really rude. In the grand scheme of things happening, it really doesn’t matter. Taylor Swift’s career will continue and it probably is buoyed up and her fame is even larger now because of it.”

  6. GatsbyGal says:

Kanye’s only doing this because it’s expected of him. I really don’t believe his heart is in all these appologies. I think he was a little surprised at the backlash against him and is trying to claw his way out of the hole he dug himself into.

  7. Sudini says:

Well said Annie. I was also conflicted about the whole “what do you think your mom would think” question Jay asked. I really don’t think that was Jay’s place to ask that. It was too personal and it’s obvious that Kanye is still really hurting from the sudden loss of his mom. Who wouldn’t be? So I think Jay’s kind of a jerk for taking it there. But on the same token, it did seem to hit home for Kanye so maybe that’s the reality check he needed. I don’t imagine anyone else in Kanye’s circle had the balls to pose that question. I don’t think I would have either. Hopefully Kanye’s learned some humility and can bounce back from this in a very positive way. And Taylor is just rediculously cute – love her!

    Ok, let’s move on 🙂

  8. Eileen Yover says:

NEVA NEVA! It will never be OVER!! lol kidding. Good for them, the world is back on its axis once again. I’m sure I will sleep much better with this resolved…but I still stand by my thoughts from the last posting on this…hey I’m hardheaded, what can I say??

  9. gooniegirl says:

I’m with you GatsbyGal….he’s done this stunt before in Europe so if he was genuine, wouldn’t he have felt bad last time and known not to do it again?

Just out of curiosity – I didn’t see Taylor’s speech when Beyonce called her up – but did Taylor thank Beyonce for giving her a chance to come back?

  10. mhjmc says:

I think Jay Leno was dead on asking about what his mother would think; he (K) put it out there that his mother was everything to him, yes it was personal but hey what he did was personal too.
I have to say that I don’t buy his apology, I think it’s all to staged, if he was truly sorry the first person he’d of apologized to was Taylor not the Press and Media.
Will this go away, I hope so, I’m so tired of Kanye. If he’s such a mess over his mother still then he needs some serious counseling and to lay off the booze and stop making others feel bad.

  11. Firestarter says:

So bored with this matter now. Taylor is fine, Kanye is still an ass, and Leno can ask whatever he wants, as the questions are gone over by teh producers with teh guests ahead of time. The question was asked, I am sure, with Kanye’s blessing, as a way to humanize him and make him seem vulnerable. Crocodile tears were shed, he got the publicity he wanted and Taylor has gotten a whole new legion of fans and admirers!

  12. wow says:

He’s not once, but a few times apologized. She’s accepted his apology, so this should be a dead topic now. He shouldn’t have to keep apologizing for the rest of his life.

Celebs and politians do and say dumb sh*t everyday and some of them continue to live with no apologies what-so-ever. I admire the ones who can be called out on their mess, see the wrong in it, apologize and move on. I’m STILL waiting for former Pres. Bush to apologize for the last 8 years. Haven’t heard a peep out of him because it takes some humility for a person to admit that they were wrong.

  13. Bubulle says:

I’m done with that story being all over the news. It’s just Kanye getting publicity for being a douche as usual. People just need to move on.

  14. edgite says:

goonie girl – Just out of curiosity – I didn’t see Taylor’s speech when Beyonce called her up – but did Taylor thank Beyonce for giving her a chance to come back?

Yes she was extremely sweet when she came out, she hugged Beyonce before and again after, and said some lovely things about her when interviewed. She was very appreciative.

  15. the original kate says:

that apology was so fake, but whatever…shouldn’t we all be used to kanye making a jackass of himself and then saying how sorry he is? he’s only done it like a skillion times already.

  16. BooJoulais says:

If Taylor Swift can be gracious and forgiving, why can’t the rest of us mere mortals? Not congratulating the man, not going chip in on the nails and 2×4 for the crucifixtion, Entertainment Tonight and every other gossip site is raking Kanye over the coals.

Listen to Cojo! Keep it fresh and smile!

  17. ella says:

Oh please, Kanye apologized only because his publicist people told him to. They don’t want his ruined image get worse. Beside if he meant it, he would immediately contact Taylor to apologize not announcing it to the world on Leno show or internet

  18. BooJoulais says:

Like Britney Spears? Like Lindsey Lohan? Like Serena Williams? Like any other celebrity who behaves badly? If the publicity wizards told him to, they are earning their keep. At least THEY have a job.

Do we all rake them over the coals? I know, maybe we can get that Roman Polanski bastard, he’s overdo for his beatdown……

  19. Trey says:

Her hair is just sooooooo pretty. It makes me want to curl my own hair…

  20. Aussie says:

Kanye West is a piece of shit!
He needs to lock him and his chemo patient looking bald ho away and have a good think about the big headed wanker he has grown into.
He has done the micophone snatching thing before, his interviews are sickening, he needs to get back down to earth. He’s not the God he thinks he is, he’s lost his manners and that’s ugley as hell! Off the coke boy, it’s made you crazy!

  21. Bizz says:

His phony tears on Leno just make him look like an even bigger douche!

  22. Daniel says:

    thanks edgite 🙂

  24. EJ says:

Is it me or this was made in purpose to give Taylor fame?Oh poor Taylor lets all by her CD and listen to it.he probably got paid to do it. He is a jerk anyway 🙂
