Prince William has been ‘in touch’ with the racially abused England footballers

Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge

Two Sundays ago, Prince William attended the Euro final, England vs. Italy. Italy won, and by most accounts, William refused to shake hands with the Italian politicians there, refused to congratulate any Italians in person, refused to even say hello to the Italian team after the match and refused to be part of the trophy presentation (which he had been hyped to take part in). If all of that wasn’t bad enough, racist bile was directed at the young England players who missed their penalty kicks. William thought he solved racism in football by declaring himself bored with it, and William waited until Monday morning to speak out about the racist hate towards the football players. Then when he did tweet about it, he trended on social media for being a racist hypocrite. All of which was ignored by the British press. I wonder if the Sunday papers would have any update on William, racism and football and here we go:

The Duke of Cambridge has been comforting the three black England footballers subjected to vile racist abuse after missing penalties in the Euros final shoot-out against Italy. Prince William went to the dressing room at Wembley to commiserate with the squad after their defeat last Sunday and has since been ‘in touch’ with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka who were targeted by online trolls.

A source said William – who said he had been ‘sickened’ by the ‘unacceptable and abhorrent’ racist abuse – has also been liaising with the Football Association about how pressure can be put on social media firms to do more to tackle the issue.

The Prince is President of the FA and attended the final with the Duchess of Cambridge and their son Prince George. In a statement after it emerged the three players had been racially abused, he said: ‘It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable.’

A Palace source told The Mail on Sunday that William’s ‘focus has been on supporting the players’ and there had been ‘private conversations’.

In a plea last week, Saka, 19, called on the tech giants to step up their efforts. ‘I don’t want any child or adult to receive the hateful and hurtful messages that me, Marcus and Jadon have received,’ he wrote. ‘I knew instantly the kind of hate I was about to receive and that is a sad reality that your powerful platforms are not doing enough to stop these messages.’

Tackling racism in football and wider society is a cause close to William’s heart. Three years ago he demanded tech firm bosses do more to block those who spout online abuse. In a speech at the BBC, he accused social media companies of arrogance, saying: ‘Their self-image is so grounded in their positive power for good that they seem unable to engage in constructive discussion about the social problems they are creating.’

Despite revulsion at the latest abuse, more than 80 per cent of the Instagram accounts identified as trolling the England players remain active, according to the Centre for Countering Digital Hate.

[From The Daily Mail]

“William’s ‘focus has been on supporting the players’” – I can only imagine how incredibly out-of-touch those conversations have been and how little support the president of FA has actually given. How many times has William told Marcus Rashford that he’s terribly bored with the whole issue? Not just that – William has been “liaising with the Football Association about how pressure can be put on social media firms to do more to tackle the issue.” So… the president of the FA has been liaising with the FA about what they think about vaguely putting pressure on social media companies. While I absolutely agree that social media companies need to do much more to shut down racist abuse online, the larger problem in this situation is that England “fans” think it’s perfectly acceptable to be racist a–holes, to throw the n-word around, to call players “monkeys” and to abuse players. William wants this to be an “online speech” issue when it’s a racism issue. And he has zero authenticity or authority on racism as a man who actively promoted, prolonged and accentuated a racist smear campaign against his sister-in-law.

The jokes at this point write themselves 😂😂😂😂🙈🤭🙊

    • Lily says:

No doubt William comforted the abused players by telling them, “don’t worry, this is very much not a racist country, we all just think you’re bullies by calling out our very much not racist bullshit.”

      • Noodle says:

@lily, if past performance is any indicator of present circumstances, he probably put his arm around them and told them they were emotionally fragile. So support. Very compassion.

    • Elizabeth Regina says:

Sigh. He just can’t help himself can he? I don’t know who this smearer in chief thinks he is fooling. The cognitive dissonance is astounding. “Comforting”?? Tell that to his brother and sister in law. Give me a break.

  2. Amy Bee says:

How come the piece didn’t mention the racist abuse thrown at Meghan and Archie every time the royal social media accounts posts about them? I’m sure William knows about this but he has never said or done anything about it. When did William ever talk about racism in society? He’s only spoken about football.

  3. Jais says:

The DM posted a picture of William with this article that was extremely unflattering and Femi Oluwole on Twitter asked if that was his “comforting” face. Reader, I laughed a lot.

    • Lori says:

Yeah, pretty sure that photo was trolling him, along with how DM handled the comments section. It was supposedly moderated, and hours went by where they allowed 0 comments. I know because I tried to add a few of my own. Ince the comments were up they were harsh.
And that photo was a warning. Give us a nice bday photo of George or we’re gonna grab something really unfaltering from the Euros and use that.

    • BayTampaBay says:

“William wants this to be an “online speech” issue when it’s a racism issue.

Kaiser’s comment sums it all up in one sentence.

  4. harla says:

He needs to clean up his own house/office and social media first! And I’m still waiting hear about how diverse his staff at KP is….still waiting…

  5. Maria says:

How nice of him to be “in touch privately”.
I’m aware of how bot-infested the Mail comments are but they are horrific. Basically stating these players need to quit whining and it’s a waste of William’s time.

    • josephine says:

The privately part makes no sense. If he actually cared, he would make a loud, long and very public statement calling out the racism. But he has no credibility at all and I personally think the royals enjoy and benefit very much from racism – racism is at its essence an attempt to maintain the advantage that lazy, useless, entitled white people want/have simply by virtue of their skin tone and no one is more lazy, entitled and useless than royalty.

  6. Sunshine says:

I don’t believe one word of it.

    • goofpuff says:

They keep changing this story to what will stick. Their PR team is so bad at this. They don’t know how to handle a global stage or social media.

    • Esmerelda says:

Wills may well have mumbled something supremely unhelpful and out of touch, like “Chin up, old boy” to the abused players, followed it with a message from his team along the lines of “keep a stiff upper lip”, and then went to the press to tell them how non racist and how supremely helpful he was being, basking in the righteous glow of his future kingliness.

      • JT says:

I won’t believe it until an actual player says he visited them. I find it odd that this so called “comforting” excuse came out well after the game was over. This is just probably another one of KP’s half-baked lies to explain his complete lack of diplomacy and sportsmanship in the one real job that he has.

  7. VS says:

This guy is a joke….he got torched the other with his performative allyship nonsense! looks like he is not learning; as long as he does not acknowledge the issue with Meghan/Archie and LiliDi, everything he does will be seen as performative!

He should stop wasting his time and go back to trimming rose bu….that fits his skillset much more

    What an idiot!

  8. OzJennifer says:

I’m in a bit of a mood today, so forgive me if I say: just f*ck off PWT. F*ck off as far as you can and then keep going. There. That feels better. 🙂

    • GRUEY says:

I’m right there with you. He’s briefing on background to make himself look good on racism?? Um nooooooooo the hell you don’t sir. We saw you. We all heard you loud and fucking clear.

This is a different flavor of Sarah Everard all over again.

    • Lorelei says:

Agreed. Let us know when he decides to be “in touch” with his brother’s wife and his brand new niece. Hypocritical bastard.

  9. GRUEY says:

Ew shut up Baldimort. This ain’t about your fug ass.

This family and their private, silent, dignified, behind the scenes condolences about the most important issues of our day. Nauseating.

  10. Kkat says:

OMG the pic the DM used of PWT is horrifying 😂😂😂
    They are definitely trolling him

    • Lorelei says:

Oh my GOD you’re right!! 😭 I usually don’t want to give them any clicks, but your comment made me curious, and it was even worse than I was expecting! His “elegance” is definitely shining through in that photo. LMFAOOOOO That pic was even worse than some of the ones Kaiser uses, and hers are superb.

    • BabsORIG says:

OMG, I made a vow to myself to never give the Fail any clicks but when I read your post, my curiosity got the best of me and I just had to peek. OMG, bwahahahaha, 😆🤣 this is trolling of the highest level, 😂😂😂😂.
      Okay, let me…….Bwaaahahahahaha😂🤣🤣🤣.
PWT, if you know what’s good for you, you better not even think about withholding any birthday pictures of your kids…..you’ve been warmed.😂😂.
I just have to give it👏🏾👏🏾 to the Fail, this is the best laughter ever.

    • Becks1 says:

I had to go and check after these comments…..and yes, definitely trolling. Careful William, the Mail is going to want its pound of flesh and Wootton knows all your dirty secrets.

    • Harper says:

Ouch. That is a bad pic. I can see Will incandescently tossing another cell phone into the infinity pool at their Mustique place over this taunt from the Fail. Unless the cell service is bad there and his KP clown car comms team keeps this from him.

  11. Over it says:

So if Willy shuts down on line abuse and racism, then what will he have left? Isn’t it his same kind of racist supporters who are doing just as he does with Meghan?

  12. Sofia says:

Didn’t William have a campaign that would was supposed to tackle racism in football but it’s now ended? Wasn’t such a smart idea to end it now was it?

Anyways I imagine his conversations went something like “Racism is bad. It would be nice if someone did something concrete about it, I guess. [awkward silence] Anyways, I’m off to my Mustique vacation!”

    • LMR says:

      Ha!
“I’m off to my Mustique vacation to be waited on hand and foot by people of color. I will be nice to them. How can I make that count toward the KP diversity numbers?”

  13. Over it says:

Guys, we need to talk about Willy. I feel like he has a substance abuse problem. His skin is ashen, his lips are cracked and dark. He just doesn’t look right. He is always angry and never looks like he is present. Something isn’t right with him.

  14. Digital Unicorn says:

Nothing more than PR damage control considering how badly he was trolled on social media and by the international press.

Nothing has or will change – Lewis Hamilton was racially abused on SM after he won the British grand prix yesterday (and yes I know there was controversy over his crash with Verstappen). Crickets from William and KP on that, guess that’s cause he’s not a footballer.

  15. Becks1 says:

Does anyone, including the three players, take him seriously when he talks like this? Those players saw what happened to Meghan.

    • TheOriginalMia says:

I doubt those players or any person of color takes William seriously when it comes to racism, specifically because of his silence on the racist abuse of Meghan and the kids. They know his statements are empty gestures.

  16. A says:

This is beyond patronizing at this point! Does anyone really believe that William is at home deeply focused and reading up on institutional and societal racism? I mean let’s just put Meghan to the side for a second ( despite her being the most obvious example as to where he really is on this). I seem to recall as recently as last month, both Buckingham palace and clearance house after decades of refusing to do so, finally releasing numbers on the diversity of their senior staff and at least giving lip service to the fact that they really ought to try to do a little better. Guess who decided to run for cover without any explanation on the matter? And, to top it all off I think every-time William tries to intervene or show “support” he actually gives cover for the tabloid press who is often just as bad.

  17. TeamAwesome says:

The players’ social media was flooded with the same racist imagery that was published when Archie was days old. If the royal family had said anything about it then, it might have made a difference, even if only to Harry and Meghan.

  18. taris says:

    they’re trying too hard.

any day now they’ll be touting william’s involvement in the civil rights movement.

    • lanne says:

I heard he retroactively flew to stand by Dr King at the March on Washington in 1963. He managed to attend 19 years before he was born. But he’s royal, and they got it like that, I hear.

  19. ABritGuest says:

The royal family following popular sentiment. There’s been outpouring of support for the three footballers & the royal family are just jumping on the bandwagon. Charles mentioned Marcus Rashford being a force for good for his free school campaign on a radio interview last week too.

Why were the royal family silent when people were booing the same players for kneeling for BLM earlier in the Euros tournament? They didn’t speak up on BLM protests last year either. That’s before we even get into their complete silence on people in their own family suffering the same abuse as these footballers have. They have zero credibility on this issue.

The palace has some balls to even brief on william comforting the players about racist abuse in the Fail of all places. It’s like the palace having to brief that kate had written to Sarah Everard’s family. The need to centre themselves is amazing. I think this is cue from one of the Diversity dancers saying they had had support from Harry & Meghan after they faced racist backlash for including BLM in their Britain’s got talent routine. Maybe William will resurrect his social media bullying campaign after seeming to drop it. The government & his press pals are hot on this topic right now

  20. sunny says:

I feel terrible for those players. Facing racism is tough enough without adding the emotional labour of managing the feelings of people more powerful than you who suddenly want to talk about racism but really just want you to make them feel like they aren’t part of the problem. Sigh.

Truly, once a really racist incident happened at my work to me and another employee(the two most senior black people in our entire organization) and when my VP tried to help, he was so distraught and unhelpful about the incident, I had to comfort him and manage his feelings. The work!

  21. Catherine says:

I sincerely hope that BTS they are not attempting to get those players involved in some sort of photo op PR project for William. The FA is being criticized not just for their failure to aggressively combat racist abuse but for the security issues and the hooligan behavior of UK fan during other teams national anthems. It’s being reported that the bid for the World Cup is being threatened by all the negative media. William/the FA need a positive PR moment.

  22. Colleen says:

Funny how he’s now making online abuse “his” cause. Especially since it’s a cornerstone of some of H&M’s work 🤔🤔

  23. Savu says:

What a subtle dig – “three years ago he demanded tech bosses do more”

It’s been three years since he’s said or done anything about hate speech on social media 😂

  24. Jan says:

Most of the English players left England to go on vacation, unless Cain had the phone numbers for players, there is no way he was talking to them.
One of the black players call out Patel, on her bullshit saying she called taking a knee performative, when they were using it against racism, and now she is singing a different tune.
I can imagine him saying to Cain, why did you not show support for the racism directed at your SIL.

  25. Rapunzel says:

Wills, trying to comfort the footballers:

“Hey guys, you wanna hear a joke? I was doing an interview one time, and the colored delivery driver got searched like a criminal. Have you ever heard anything so hilarious? Anyways, give my regards to all the ethnic when you go home to Africa. I tried to get my brother and sister-in-law (the bossy bitch) sent there to greet you. But they betrayed the family and moved to Hollywood. They did an interview with Oprah. Do you guys know Oprah? I prefer Piers Morgan. Gottagobye!”

  26. nina says:

This is a lie because they have a photo op for everything they do. These people are pathetic

  27. HeyJude says:

In touch privately?! A real leader would have invited them and their families to the palace for a (socially distant, COVID safe of course- perhaps garden party) lunch and a kick-about with the Prince to show true support and a good example.

Really it’s that simple. That’s all you’d have to do.

    • swirlmamad says:

It’s really stunningly absurd how simpleminded the RF is….your suggestion would have been the easiest way to show support. And don’t give me any covid protocol BS — they never followed it in numerous instances when they absolutely should have, so they could’ve easily done something like this here. I honestly believe it’s because they truly DON’T CARE to do anything to show they are seriously against racism and support the players. All empty words and gestures. William and his cronies make me sick.

  28. harla says:

So when will Wills be speaking out against the racist abuse Lewis Hamilton is enduring after winning the British Grand Prix?? By not supporting Meghan during the height of the racist abuse thrown her way, William and the other royals emboldened the racists in Britain and now there isn’t anything he can do to stop it.

  29. Shannon says:

LOL…. Typical Brits. They can’t admit being racist, so it’s the internet’s fault.

  30. Lizzie says:

Confirmation from the players? I thought not. TOB is probably on vacation.

  31. jferber says:

William wants to deal with racism against the soccer players “privately.” He also wanted the Sussexes to deal with RF racism “privately.” To him, “privately” is code for shut your mouth and I’ll do nothing. Racism is very much a public and social issue. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. never talked about dealing with racism privately. He heroically took action very publicly and changed America, dying for the cause. William, you will never be a hero or even a good person. YOU are the racist and YOU are the bully. You shame your country.

  32. Well Wisher says:

Why lock the barn door after the horse left? If it make him feel better, okay?

  33. February-Pisces says:

Willie is not supporting them, he is exploiting the racism they endured for his own benefit. It’s funny how when people are racist to someone the Keens always seem to benefit from good PR.

  34. Likeyoucare says:

There are no pictures of willie when he said he was in the locker room after the game.
There are no statement from the 3 players saying they had receive comfort from williem
So all of these does not exist.
The players are silence.. or were they silent.
    See what i did they🤭
