A Black Canary film with Jurnee Smollett written by Misha Green is coming

I was upset that HBO didn’t renew Lovecraft Country for a second season. The show was Jurnee Smollett’s best role to date and I had looked forward to seeing where Misha Green would take the show. The good news is we will soon be able to see Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett reunite. But not for Lovecraft Country. Misha and Jurnee are in early development for a Birds of Prey spinoff with HBOMax that will focus on Black Canary. Black Canary, played by Jurnee, made her debut in the Birds of Prey film and is an established DC character. Before the Birds of Prey film, Katie Cassidy played Black Canary in the CW show Arrow. Below are a few more details from The Hollywood Reporter:

Green will write the script for the feature, with Smollett due to reprise her role. Sur Kroll, who produced Prey, will produce Canary.

Prey was not a strong performer at the box office — it grossed only $201.8 million worldwide when released in Feb. 5, 2020 — but did generate fan interest and had actors who were game to play.

No take on the story was revealed, however Canary is one of DC’s long-standing characters, having been created in the late 1940s. Since the 1960s, she has been associated mostly with Green Arrow and is known for her ear-splitting canary cry.

Canary now joins a growing stable of HBO Max movies centered on DC characters such as Batgirl and Blue Beetle, as well as a series focused on a Black Superman.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I am more of a Marvel fan and know more about their mythologies than DC. My favorite DCEU characters have always been Wonder Woman, Catwoman, and The Flash but I have not enjoyed the DCEU’s films of late. The films fall flat compared to the MCU’s movies. However, DC has been quite successful with their TV series on the WB and I have truly enjoyed them, especially Kung Fu. Honestly I have only seen half of Birds of Prey. I know it did not perform well at the box office. I plan to rewatch Birds of Prey to understand Black Canary’s story as shown in that film versus her story from Arrow. I also like the idea of a movie centering Black Canary because of her interesting back story.

I would most likely watch anything that Jurnee is in where Misha is at the helm. These two women are a very powerful pair. Jurnee got her first Emmy nomination for Lovecraft, which was well deserved. And if Lovecraft Country is any indication of the magic that Misha and Jurnee can create together then I am here for their Black Canary film. Perhaps Misha and Jurnee will be the female version of director Steve McQueen and his “muse” Michael Fassbender who are known for creating amazing films together. I hope that Lovecraft and Black Canary are a beautiful start to a prolific creative relationship between Misha and Jurnee.

This is amazing news. The CW messed up this character big time. The Black Canary is a great character. This is going to be awesome.

Jurnee’s Black Canary was amazing. Sexy, smart, kickass (still trying to figure out how she kicked so much ass in those tight jeans) and funny. She was a terrific foil to Harley’s insanity.

For the record, I didn’t think Birds of Prey was that bad. I enjoyed it.

I agree with both the comments above. So
    Looking forward to this.

Lovecraft Country was awesome, but they said that it was based on a book & they already finished that story. Made me sad, loved that movie.

A friend of mine worked on a film crew that she was working and says that Smollett is dreadful. But to be fair, my friend is kind of dreadful so…

I loved Lovecraft Country and I really enjoyed Birds of Prey. We’ll definitely check this out once it’s available.

Both my teenage daughter and son loved Birds of Prey, as did I. And Jurnee was awesome. I can’t wait to see what they do with this.

I believe BoP was the last movie I saw in theaters before the pandemic hit. I took a friend of mine who’s not into movies, we saw it on IMAX and it was a ride. We enjoyed it very much.

  9. Grant says:

Birds of Prey was fantastic, one of the best DCEU movies, no question. Ewan McGregor was a great villain and Jurnee was excellent as Black Canary. Can’t wait to see her in her own film!

I’m still not over Lovecraft Country! It was so good and there was so much story potential :/
That said I’ll watch anything Smolley does next, I love this new generation of black actors in action/fantasy roles.

I watched birds of prey on hbo Max and enjoyed it. I wasn’t able to watch it in movie theater because I was already scared of covid. Maybe that’s why it bombed at the box office ?

FINALLY. The one comic other than The Walking Dead that I actually read.
