Amber Heard & Johnny Depp were both found liable of defamation

Here are some photos of Amber Heard leaving court in Fairfax, Virginia, just after the jury’s verdict came down. Years after Amber Heard divorced Johnny Depp, she wrote a Washington Post op-ed where she “felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out” about domestic abuse. She wrote about how her personal and professional life was affected in the wake of speaking out about being a victim of domestic violence. She never mentioned Depp by name. That op-ed was published in 2018. In 2019, Depp sued her for defamation. Before the American case could proceed, Depp had to deal with the libel lawsuit he brought against the Sun, the British tabloid, which had referred to him as a “wife-beater.” Depp lost the libel suit and the judge found that there was ample evidence that saying or writing “Johnny Depp is a wife-beater” is a statement of fact and not libelous in the least. That was in 2020.

For the past six weeks during the Fairfax trial, Depp and his people have waged a sustained and batsh-t disinformation campaign against Amber. There have been live-streams of the case, TikTokers have been mocking Amber, tweeters have been running around lying in defense of a man with a history of violence, and Deppford Wives have been inserting themselves in every single conversation. Here at Celebitchy, we have not been immune. We’ve been dealing with Depp bots, Depp trolls and truly unwell Depp fans for years and it’s ramped up in recent months. Which is why we’ve opted out of daily coverage of the Fairfax trial (and also why we ignored the day-to-day storylines from the UK libel case). As I said, there’s been a sustained campaign. Someone is bankrolling this. This is not simply an organic surge of Depp-fandom. It never was.

The Fairfax trial was, frankly, deplorable. Depp’s goal was, as ever, to punish Heard. That’s been his goal for years now, to humiliate her, to punish her, to abuse her by any means necessary, to ruin her financially and professionally. And in this case, he won. The jury came back on Wednesday. The jury was not sequestered, by the way. They all had access to those TikToks and the paid Depp pysops campaign being waged like he was trying to steal an election. The jury mostly found in Depp’s favor, no surprise.

A jury has found both Amber Heard and Johnny Depp liable for defamation in their lawsuits against each other. Depp sued Heard, his ex-wife, for defamation over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Though Depp was not named in the article, he claims it cost him lucrative acting roles. Heard countersued her ex-husband for defamation over statements Depp’s attorney made about her abuse claims.

The jury found that Heard defamed Depp in three separate statements in The Washington Post piece, and that Depp defamed Heard with one statement his attorney made.

The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million dollars in punitive damages. The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages.

[From CNN]

This reminds me of the “mutual abuse” argument the Deppford Wives made for about a week. That sure, Depp and Heard had a toxic and abusive relationship but that Heard shouldn’t have done this or that. That’s what this verdict is – it’s the “both sides, but mostly we hate her” verdict. While I believe that this campaign was almost all about an abusive man’s ego and sadism, it obviously has wider repercussions. The worst people in America are already celebrating this as “the end of Me Too” and “the end of Believe Women.” The GOP is celebrating merely because “bitches, right?” All of this is just… contemptible.

I hate him too. Awful narcissist.
I’m devastated about the verdict and glad that Amber is appealing. The disgusting misogyny and threats she has faced are proof positive that feminism has such a long way to go, we can’t even see the end point in the distance. So many women attacking a DV survivor because she’s not the ‘perfect victim’.
I wish most of social media could be shut down at this point. It’s being used to enable the worst kinds of emotional and verbal violence.

      • This year has made me realize that every step forward we made with MeToo is not only gone, but we’ve regressed. He is now an idol to the incel crowd. Disgusting.

    • Runaway says:

I am so sick with all this, I didn’t follow the trial closely because this was my fear and it made me sick.
I watch SVU a lot, Amber is not a perfect victim but she is a victim and this verdict will hurt so many people in the future, it absolutely is a setback.
And in a country that is chomping at the bit to take away women’s reproductive rights, they’re coming for all your rights next!!
Get the f* out of Gilead. Run before you can’t get out 😢

      • Belli says:

What I’ve come to realise over the past couple of years is that the only perfect victim is a dead one.

    • Josephine says:

the number of ignorant people flocking to his bloated side is disgusting.

    • Jais says:

At this point, I find him so deeply unattractive. Like stomach turning, vomit in my mouth just at seeing his face.

    • ELX says:

Who is bankrolling this mess? By all accounts, Depp is on the bitter edge of completely broke—who has the money and a sadistic enjoyment of making Amber Heard and/or women generally miserable?

      • C says:

Ben Shapiro and other proud boys were paying for a lot of harassment. Says a lot about Depp!

So glad they found in favor of him. Maybe now he can go on to caricature more Native Americans and help the people trying to exonerate Marilyn Manson!

    • Dragonlady Sakura says:

I live in Virginia, but the people here act Amber kicked a puppy and slapped an old lady. It’s overwhelmingly against her here, it’s shocking.

    • ChillinginDC says:

Yep. And it’s been gross and awful how many of his “fans” think this verdict proved he wasn’t an abuser. That wasn’t what the freaking case was about. And I am glad actual lawyers even pointed out that Amber has grounds for appeal cause one of the things that “jury” found for was the headline which she of course didn’t write.

  2. Canucklehead says:

I cried on and off most of the day (I’m in Australia so woke up to the verdict).

I stand with Amber Heard. I believe her.

I don’t understand what bat shit laws can allow them to find that his lawyer defamed her by claiming her accusations were a hoax but Depp was also defamed by her speaking up.

With all the evidence she had, the witnesses, even somebody from Disney testifying that the op-ed did not feature into their decision not to hire him again for another pirates movie and discussions of his bad behavior on set the fact they still found in his honor is a testament to bots, misinformation and misogyny.

    Truly heartbroken.

  3. Ninks says:

I truly feel for Amber. Everything that’s happened has proven her op Ed was right. She spoke up about the abuse of a powerful, wealthy white man and has been punished over and over again for it. Her career is over, her reputation destroyed and she’s dealing with the trauma of the abuse and having to relive it in such a public spectacle. Depp is scum. He is vindictive and awful. I hope that at least now he has some sort of win over her that he’ll leave her alone and stop trying to punish her.

  4. Zapp Brannigan says:

I believe Amber. I see lots of crowing online about how Evan Rachel Woods is next to be proven a liar in court. I just can’t anymore, misogyny is getting worse, women are hated in this world I guess I just forgot that for a little while.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

I believe Amber as well – as others have said she not the ‘perfect victim’ (whatever that is) and was let down by her legal team. Depp has a LOOONG history of abuse – I remember when he got sacked from 21 Jump St for assaulting a director. He also has previous for assaulting paps. It’s interesting to me that Kate Moss gave evidence supporting him but not Vanessa Paradise.

Am disgusted that he keeps getting praised for being an abusive asshole just because he’s a famous white man.

I fear for Evan Rachel Wood and her case with Manson.

      • FrenchGirl says:

Vanessa Paradis défended Depp in France . Don’t Forget He is the father of ther children and even if She is rich and famous ,even broke Depp is Richer and morefamous

    • Flowerlake says:

      Please remember it.

There is something in males as a collective that thinks it’s just to dominate women. You can especially see that in their glee when women “are put in their place”.

Maybe not in that great cousin or wonderful teacher you know. Not all men, I know.

But there is a reason women have been oppressed in most of history, most places in the world.

Always vote. Men won’t protect us.

    • Kelly says:

Evan Rachel Wood did show support for Amber on social media, but it seemed very cautiously worded, likely because of her ongoing case with Manson. Can’t blame her for that approach considering how close he is to Depp.

I do hope that Wood fares better in her case, which she should be less complicated for a couple reasons. First, she’s not the only woman who has accused Manson with credible sounding accusations. Second, there’s a big difference in public perception between Manson and Depp, the scary goth rocker blamed for Columbine compared to the “beloved” Captain Jack Sparrow.

The Depp fanatics were something else during this trial, especially on social media. I’m sure the circus atmosphere at the courthouse made things worse for Heard and her legal team. I’ll admit to being a Depp fan at one time, but lost interest in seeing his work as it became less interesting and him phoning it in playing weird/oddball characters.

      • MissMarirose says:

I fear for ERW as well. This verdict is going to start a wave of abusers suing their victims to keep control of them. In addition to Marilyn Manson suing Wood, Trevor Bauer is suing his accuser and a (female) journalist who tweeted about the accusation. It’s open season now.

    • ChillinginDC says:

People are going after her, MeghanTheeStallion and another actress. It’s bonkers.

  5. Cel2495 says:

I watched some of the trial… it was crazy. What I understood from it it was that they had a very very toxic relationship. Not sure how Amber will come back from this to have a career… I think she is already losing roles from what she said. I think she should appeal on lots of grounds ( cameras in court, reducing the award money, jury verdict, etc). It’s not all lost but not sure if she has the money to keep going and paying lawyers.

She is not the perfect victim but she is one. People might not find her easy to like but that’s no excuse to harass her and make fun of her on TikTok and YouTube.

    • Melissa says:

She will never bounce back. Her career is definitely over. I’ve never seen her films either.

The poop on the pillow thing was bound to make headlines. No one is associating with that, be it truth or fact :/

    • Ravensdaughter says:

As a retired lawyer, I’m just thinking about the financial piece. The $10 million judgment PLUS the legal fees. How will she ever pay that off?
I know that she is appealing–I don’t know enough about the case to state whether she has solid grounds for her appeal. That’s legal fees, too. On the other hand, I hope she is successful although good God-another trial?
As for her career: yes, it is in meltdown. Maybe indie films?
She was not the perfect victim, but I believe her. Johnny Depp just had more and better lawyers, I susoect.
One weird thing: her face has been called the “most beautiful face in the world.” Can she get any mileage out of that?:
      https://www.usmagazine.com/stylish/news/amber-heard-has-the-most-beautiful-face-study-w429412/

      • Aud says:

I’ve heard she is appealing due to the jury being tainted by social media. I hope she wins.

  6. Hmm says:

Thank you for one of the only sane, reasoned articles I have read on this terrible situation. I’m also glad you pointed out that it feels bankrolled. I’ve never seen anything as obviously bankrolled on insta before it’s truly bizarre.

  7. Scal says:

Me. Oh I’m never violent she attacked me-has his assault trial start at the end of the July. But you know-would never hurt a fly /s

I hate him and all the people crowing on social media. All those depp accounts have now started on Evan Rachel wood and Megan thee stalllion. It’s disgusting

  8. Miranda says:

This was just a continuation of the abuse inflicted on Amber during the marriage. Not only that, but his deranged fans were recruited to rub salt in her wounds.

I hope Depp enjoys his new companions. The wife beaters. The rapists. The misogynists and incels. So the GOP, basically. Have fun,

  9. ThatsNotOkay says:

I’ll say it again: I don’t like either of them. But I think he did the most to inflict abuse especially during his blackouts. She is no saint, but doesn’t have to be. They did bring out the worst in each other and that man was jealous of anyone of any gender who paid Amber any attention and so possessive it was scary. She was a bit manipulative too, in my opinion. And she shat the bed.

Juries and law enforcement hate domestic violence cases. They HATE them and never know what to do other than leave victims to work it out on their own and end up dead. I’m glad she fled Johnny. But I also think she embellished a ton of shit to bolster her case (calling TMZ to document her injuries?), but she is a survivor nonetheless. The problem is that Depp won the PR war and has a better catalog of films to garner a deranged fan base that elevates truly sucky movies and a mediocre actor and that would go online and attack Amber. They are well rid of each other, should cut their losses, but you’d better believe this is not the last of this saga. Each is going to appeal and demand more money. The War of the Roses ain’t got nuthin’ on the DEFCON of the Depps. (PS Johnny is friends with Marilyn Manson. Partied together. He is the company he keeps.)

    • Jais says:

I guess I’m confused. Was the trial about who abused who the most? Maybe in the court of public opinion. A lot of the conversation seems about that but wasn’t the trial about whether she defamed him based on 3 sentences from her WP essay? I’ve been avoiding reading about it so I’m genuinely unsure how some things have to do with the actual defamation suit.

      • ThatsNotOkay says:

The trial had to be about the abuse indirectly. She essentially said she was a DV survivor, so she had to prove she was, otherwise Johnny is right that she defamed him by implying she was. He has to prove “she started it” and that he didn’t lay a hand on her, which again is why the trial was about abuse. People above have commented how odd it is that the jury is ultimately saying they abused each other, so how could what she wrote have been a lie? The answer? The jury likes him more and thought he lied LESS than Amber. They think they’re both liars but she is the bigger one and damaged his career more by going public. She damaged her own career less by going public and his lawyer only damaged her career a fraction of a bit. If I were to guess, they kind of probably looked at how much ea h person was worth and the money they were commanding at the height of their careers and gave them 10% of that. Johnny was at $100 million, amber at $20. Now both at zero and I personally hope it stays that way. Do something else.

      • Jais says:

I guess? Idk, it still doesn’t make sense to me. Maybe it’s not supposed to.

    • Snoozer says:

So she didn’t document it enough but she documented it too much?

There is no hard evidence she shat in the bed. He was the one who sent texts to his assistant telling him to shit as a prank. The UK judge found there wasn’t enough evidence. And they had an incontinent dog. But REGARDLESS, the poo in the bed has been used as a distractionary tactic. The ‘silly’, embarrassing and gross nature of it has meant that it has been mentioned in every single story and hot take, it has drowned out much more serious accusations of violence and sexual violence as well as shocking substance abuse and misogynistic texts. The hashtags #amberturd and #mepoo are everywhere. Can we not buy into that narrative? It is the least significant part of the whole story.

    • Purplehazeforever says:

I used to love Johnny Depp until two things happened: River Phoenix died outside of the Viper Room & he was trashing hotel rooms when he dated Kate Moss. I think he also was trashing them with Winona Ryder but I think Kate Moss was the one who was upset over it. How she does put that together with abuse I will never know. But River Phoenix’s death gutted me & Depp carried on like nothing happened. After that, I was like he’s a douchebag. River could have possibly been saved if paramedics were called instead of the club worrying about covering their own asses. That should tell anyone who Depp is. So yeah I believe Amber & I don’t think she manipulated him. Do I think she reacted to being violently abused? Yes. And unfortunately the jury bought into this idea unless you’re perfect, you’re not really a victim..unless you document every instance of abuse, you’re lying, unless you go about with bruises, you’re lying. It’s bullshit.

    • ChillinginDC says:

Nope. The case was about did that article defame Depp. And that’s all it should have been about. This is chilling on First Amendment grounds but also the fact that jury held her responsible for a headline she didn’t write was too stupid for words.

  10. nutella toast says:

If Kyle Rittenhouse is celebrating you, you’re on the wrong end of things. Period.
    https://twitter.com/ThisIsKyleR

I work at a sexual assault and child advocacy center – this is beyond devastating. I’ve also been dismayed at the number of survivors who are Depp stans. If your boyfriend wanted to burn you and F your corpse, we’d tell you to RUN and never look back. Not make a t-shirt in his honor. You can think Amber is problematic but also believe that he abused her. I’m so tired.

    • Cee says:

It’s like women can’t fight back, right? We just have to take in the punches and never, ever hit them back trying to protect ourselves.

    • Rainbow Kitty says:

If I read that my partner wanted to burn my body and F the corpse I would be terrified. That is truly a terrifying, gross thing to think/say.
And that’s just it- you don’t have to “like” AH to believe her. This was court of public opinion and not court of law and it’s sad.

  11. terra says:

I almost exclusively watch choreography, cooking, and science-related content on YouTube and for weeks I’ve seen pro-Depp videos in 99% of my sidebars, so I didn’t need to be told that someone was banking rolling his side, but I cannot begin to tell you how vindicated I feel that other (non-insane) people see it too.

That said, this decision is bonkers. So, his very case defamed her by saying her claims are lies, but she defamed him by making said claims in the first place? . . . That makes sense. (Ron Howard voiceover: No, it doesn’t.)

    • Coco Bean says:

Every other video or article I’d scroll past was anti-Amber. Never watched a single one but they kept popping up over and over again. I’ve never seen anything like it. What a sick circus this trial turned into.

    • Jessamine says:

This exactly! I watch beekeeping, bullet journaling, and origami videos. Same for my IG along with cooking/homesteading. WALL TO WALL pro-Depp (by which I mean viciously anti-Amber, a person I have never googled and could not before this have picked out of a blond actress lineup) in all of my feeds. Disgusting and hateful.

    • Belli says:

It’s been everywhere. My social media feeds have been focused on very niche things for years, then suddenly the trial was everywhere. And by trial I mean the “Amber Heard is EVIL” stuff.

  12. BUBS says:

An orchestrated smear campaign…very well organized and seemingly deeply funded too…

  13. Lightpurple says:

House Judiciary GOP is operated by Gym Jordan’s staff who are paid with OUR tax dollars. That tweet is an illegal and unethical abuse of our tax money by Gym Jordan

  14. I had a feeling that’s why you haven’t been covering the trial, but I’m at least glad that you see this for what it is. I’ve been sick to my stomach ever since the verdict hit, and the irony is that once upon a time I used to be the biggest Depp fan. I hope that Amber is safe and surrounded with support right now.

    • Kimmy says:

I feel like the only sane place is here with the rest of the like minded Celebitches.

The internet is a dumpster fire (as is the US) and I hate going to news sites anymore.

  15. Mia4s says:

Sigh…yeah I was worried this would happen. People hate women who are not pure and perfec…actually they hate those women too.

You know all of these “fans” of his would have done a lot better to see his movies. As is, he’s still a bloated past his prime drug addict who is disruptive and lazy on set and can’t open films. He’s still not worth it to studios (one small plus side to capitalizm). No civil finding of liability changes that.

  16. Cee says:

Amber Heard needs better lawyers. I followed the trial and they failed her. The fact the jury wasn’t sequestered fall on the Judge. I hope that, if the appeals go through, she gets another team in place. She needs ruthless lawyers on her side.

    • gah says:

agreed. her team was clearly not ready for the big guns brought by the Depp team. her counsel seemed super amateur by comparison and embarrassingly so on occasion.

the GOP judish support is appalling and illegal and horrifying.

  17. Eleonor says:

    I believe her too.
She has been abused by the legal system.
I have followed the trial (a bit) and I was horrified.
I agree Evan Rachel Wood will be the next one. I already saw a video (not watched it) on YouTube about her “lies”.
If even a rich white woman can’t escape this us mere mortals?
Here a nice article worth reading.

  18. Anna says:

Angie is lucky she is powerful herself because Amber-Deep situation immediatey reminds me how Pitt is still actively trying to destroy her.

I feel for Amber, she is a not a perfect victim and that’s why she lost – she’s very beautiful, fought back and talked back and that’s why people think it was impossible to hurt her. I can’t believe the jury could not see the power imbalance and how it affected their relationship.

    • I thought of Angie’s parallel situation too, also FKA, Megan The Stallion, ERW…. this is a really dark timeline for women right now…

  19. Andapanda says:

There’s nothing to celebrate here, it’s sad all around. I don’t feel the need to defend Depp or Heard. I saw a few clips because they were everywhere. He is not innocent, but she is deplorable too. Some of those audio clips give me invincible white woman vibes, then it’s white woman tears when she gets called out on it. He was smug the entire time and looking for revenge and he got it. Also her lawyers were terrible.

    • C says:

There’s a lot to be said for the white woman tears trope, but I’m less sympathetic to it against a man who actively cosplayed as a Native American caricature.

      • Otaku fairy says:

Exactly. White, powerful, male Depp getting hit and yelled at by the woman he physically and sexually abused, called a wh*re, and threatened to kill and rape really isn’t like what men of color have been through at all.

  20. Belli says:

The way this trial has been covered is sickening.

I did my absolute most to avoid any and all coverage and blocking as much as I can think of because it’s been so triggering and even then I haven’t been able to open YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook… ANYTHING without it being shoved in my face on every second post that Amber is an evil scheming witch straight out of Gone Girl and Depp is a baby boy perfect angel who’s never done anything wrong ever.

There is no way that the jury didn’t see what was happening in the public sphere, even if they had the best of intentions and didn’t look.

The social media campaign has been vicious and widespread and must have cost Depp a fortune. But it worked.

  21. Mrs. Smith says:

I, too, avoided the daily onslaught of trial coverage because it was just too much. This trial gave Depp a chance to showboat and play to the crowd of deranged fans in front of the courthouse every day. Despite his current state of general unemployment and grossness, he still has a margin of movie star charm that, apparently, can still bowl over the regular people involved and watching. Heard never stood a chance in what was essentially a popularity contest.

  22. Jessica says:

The verdict is so distressing to me. Reading his texts, it was like reading texts from my own abusive ex. And I’ve definitely learned who can’t be counted on when push comes to shove and I need support. This verdict is in no way justice. He will forever be referred to as wife beater J*hnny Depp in my life. I’ve already been avoiding his films since they first divorced, that will continue into perpetuity.

  23. Amber says:

    I feel sick about it

  24. emmi says:

I didn’t follow any of it but it was almost impossible to avoid. I saw a few short clips of them on the witness stand and of course you can’t help but like or dislike someone. I was annoyed that I immediately disliked her because I knew others would feel the same and judge accordingly. She’s just not very likeable and it f*cking sucks that that plays such a huge part.

However. Then he started talking and my god, did I dislike him even more. First of all, you can tell he’s been an alcoholic for decades. And he was laying it on thick with the “I’m the victim here, I only abused myself.” STFU, stop whining. We all know the stories of his younger days. Don’t tell me a violent alcoholic never abused anyone around him, not even emotionally or verbally. Please. We all know someone like that.

I didn’t pay attention to the evidence but the media campaign was disgusting and I bet many many powerful men – or even regular dudes – are so happy today. It’s infuriating.

  25. Case says:

I’m devastated and felt physically sick after the verdict came in. To me, Depp did not prove Amber defamed him at all and his abuse of her is undeniable, even if she is not the “perfect victim.” It baffles me they could not see the immense power imbalance in this relationship — in wealth, power, influence, fame, age. Depp is a narcissist and he played up his charm and acting skills to the jury every chance he got. He and his lawyers played them, big time.

I’m in shock the jury was not sequestered, because the social media lashing of Amber and infantilizing of Depp has just been horrifying to watch. It was absolutely promoted by *someone* on TikTok bc no matter how many times I said I was not interested in hot takes, fan cams, and mocking Amber, it kept coming up. It genuinely felt like a Black Mirror episode — whether you supported one or the other or no one at all, this was not a trial to make light of. I can’t believe the jury had access to all that content. My god.

  26. SIde Eye says:

I hate Johnny Depp and all his scarf/bracelet barf-ery. I believe Amber. I believe her career is over and it breaks my heart. Even if the studios hired her, he’d find a way to come for that income too. His mission in life is to make her suffer emotionally and especially financially. Remember when he tried to control how she spent her own divorce settlement money? What a piece of work. My heart breaks at the depths to which we hate women in this country. I know it’s ridiculous but I do find comfort in seeing him look like the Walmart version of a bloated Keith Richards and the ex from Kate plus 8 had a baby and left him in the hot sun in a dumpster at the Barg and Mart while random people passed by the dumpster and urinated in it not realizing there was a drunken, slurring trifling ass fool in there taking a nap. He looks like he makes his own skin crawl. Amber may be left with nothing but she is better off without him. I hope she heals from this entire ordeal.

  27. Bookie says:

Did you see on Twitter the official GOP Judiciary Committee celebrated with a gif of Johnny Depp as that pirate captain? (I’m happy to say I don’t know enough about it to know the name of the character…but I digress.)

Anyway, the OFFICIAL GOP Judiciary Committee celebrated the verdict. WTF?

I didn’t follow the trial AT ALL so can’t really comment on the verdict itself, but reading the hateful commentary against women in general and the celebrations of the “death of #MeToo” chilled me. The GOP and the Musk man-bros HATE women. Between Roe v Wade about to be gutted and this anti-#MeToo misogyny makes me want to leave this country. It really is frightening.

  28. g says:

I was once a huge JD fan. As a kid, I had literally wallpapered my room with pictures of him to the point that it was creepy. As a survivor, I find these allegations disturbing and believe them to be true. I find it very hard to believe anyone would make something like this up. AND…you all can hate me on here if you want…I also believe Tara Reade. No matter how popular or well-respected a man is, women rarely, if ever, make these things up just to humiliate themselves and get death threats. That’s how I feel.

    • Case says:

G, I was also a huge fan of his for a good 15 years of my life. I adored him. As soon as Amber came out with her allegations, I dropped him and have supported her ever since. Because as a fan, I was always aware of his temper. He’s assaulted many people throughout his career, actually. It is not a stretch to believe he’d get violent with a partner when under the influence, especially in this relationship that overall seemed very toxic. I mean, his texts and emails alone show how much entitlement he has, his interest in ruining people who go against him, and how much he hated her, even early in their relationship. I understand she was not totally innocent in their relationship, but I believe with my whole heart that she is essentially telling the truth, and suffered immensely with him. She will never be rid of his influence and power over her life, and that in itself is abuse.

Johnny Depp spends 30.000 in wine per month and admits to have blackouts- but hey, he is the victim!

I must commend Amber Heard . This was not something for a jury to decide. This was not something to be televised. Johnny DEpp might have won this time, but he is the true villain here.

I think someone like Peter Thiel is behind this. Depp does not have money. This is an Alt Right plot to make women second class citizens. Fight back, folks”!

I’m so angry!! At the VERY least it has helped me cull my Instagram followers. I unfollowed a few movie pages that were celebrating JD. I also unfollowed celebrity photographer Greg Williams who made a special post celebrating JD’s win. Florence Pugh, Juliette Lewis and Gemma Chan all liked it so I unfollowed their asses too. Unbelievable…

harper’s bazaar has an insightful piece out about the case and the women who support depp..

this made me realise how far we have to go as a society.
also, made me realise that women are half of society, NOTHING – no system, no norms, no laws – can be sustained without the approval (explicit or tacit) of half of humanity. if we want to find out why patriarchy has lasted this long (and continues to thrive in some ways), we have to face the inconvenient truth that some women out there, for whatever reason, certainly do their part to keep it alive.
it would be simpler if misogyny was just a matter of men oppressing women (which is certainly very true), but clearly the aunt lydias and women who hate women are a big problem, too.
(i don’t even think it’s most women – or men – who hate women like this, btw, but it’s enough to make society regress).
    sigh…

This! I’m currently watching the show Mrs. America on HBO and it is so incredibly frustrating to see an intelligent woman work against her own interest and close her eyes to the way she is being oppressed herself. Cate Blanchett’s performance is masterful – every time she’s on the screen I want to bang my head against the wall, screaming “you are colluding with your own oppression and calling it a privilege”.

Im am in shock and so angry. She had so many evidence and still lost. I’m hopeless about this society. The fact so many women support him is the most depressing of it all.

I watched a lot of the trial. Amber’s lawyers were outclassed by leaps and bounds. Her expert witnesses didn’t compare to his either, IMHO.
I’m left not caring to ever see either of them again.

I stand with Amber Heard. I stand with survivors.

  35. Otaku fairy says:

Many abused women have already been expressing fear about coming forward based on all of this. Unfortunately, there have also been some women insisting that they should be believed about abuse but are desperately dismissing abuses Amber has been experiencing. Newsweek had a post where a sociologist explained why women do this sometimes and what it means ( https://www.newsweek.com/sociologist-explains-dv-survivors-discrediting-amber-heard-1710380 ).

One important thing she mentions is that a survivor being an expert in her own experiences doesn’t necessarily make her one in someone else’s. That’s something we all will really need to keep in mind. Conversations about female celebrities getting abused in any way can get really toxic. There may be times when survivors we respect, admire, or feel protective of say things about other survivors that invalidate a struggle, that are ignorant, or that unfairly demonize another abuse victim. We have to be able to not be so caught up either in our positive, protective feelings about them, or our negative feelings about the woman they’re targeting, that we take what they say as gospel. Or make the excuse of, “As a survivor herself, she has the right to put this bitch in her place/ act as an authority on her situation.” The difference between listening when a more traditional person (whether they happen to be gay, female, trans, etc.) shares what happened to them, vs. letting them make assumptions about other queer and female experiences is also very important. Especially with all the things being done right now.

Lovely comment. What shocks me is how many women turned on Jada Pinkett Smith blaming her for what Will Smith did. How many women turned on FKA Twigs saying she should have just broken up with Shia. How many women are acting like Evan Rachel Wood could not have been much of a victim because of how she dressed/acted around Marilyn Manson. So frustrating.

Cried when I read the verdict yesterday. Having lived with a ‘functioning’ alcoholic, Ms Heard’s pleas, however dramatic, hit home for me. I cannot even describe how much I hate this kind of boys-wil-be-boys mentality in regards to self-destructive behavior, alcohol, drugs, etc.

However, what makes this incredibly malicious on Depp’s side is him and his team making a meme of the trial and AH, and broadcasting his vitriol all over the web. I knew this trial was going to trigger me and I specifically avoided googling either Depp or Heard. Still, I was bombarded with ‘Amber Heard is a witch’ videos every single day on YouTube and other platforms. I tried to remove the recommendations by giving feedback to YouTube. Nothing. Lo and behold, I logged in today (after the verdict had been made public) and no Heard/Depp content on the sidebar.

Hugs to every single person who feels unsafe or unheard because of this outcome. Please be kind to yourself and know that not everyone revels in the suffering of other people.
