Prince William and the Princess of Wales have been publicly fighting about Prince George’s education for years now. There has quite literally been a three-year briefing campaign to the British media from both sides of the conflict. It’s always seemed like William wants George to go to his alma mater, Eton. That’s where royal boys tend to go, and William reportedly enjoyed his time at Eton. Well, over the years, we’ve learned a lot about Kate’s priorities for her children’s education. She hates boarding schools, she hates same-sex education, and her priority is apparently finding a coed school so that all three of her kids can attend the same school together. In the past year especially, the war between William and Kate has gotten more forceful on both sides, with William’s camp repeatedly insisting that of course George will go to Eton. As a rebuttal, Kate’s side has repeatedly insisted that George will be headed to Marlborough later this year. Now the Daily Mail’s Charlotte Griffiths claims that Kate has won this war and Kate and William were recently touring Marlborough.
Speculation about which secondary school William and Kate’s children will attend is reaching fever pitch after my spies spotted the royals looking around Marlborough College.
Despite rumours that George, 12, would follow his father and go to all-boys Eton, William, Kate, George and Charlotte toured the £60,000 a year school where Kate was a pupil after she left all-girls Downe House due to bullying.
My source tells me pupils were mysteriously ushered out of ‘court’ – the co-educational Wiltshire school’s main square – ‘by a highly stressed teacher who told them to go and sit in the library, or anywhere else, stressing they absolutely could not be outside’.
This piqued the teenagers’ curiosity and they crept down one of the library’s turrets to get a better look at what was going on below.
‘They were shocked to see Kate and William getting out of a very smart car and walking through court,’ my source adds. ‘Then it clicked why the school seemed to have put on so many very wholesome extra-curricular activities that day, like choir practice and a random art show.’
I suspect the walls of the school’s gargantuan dining room, Norwood Hall, are echoing with speculation over whether George will join in September. He is in his final year at co-ed Lambrook prep school. Latterly royal sons, including William and Harry, have gone to Eton. Marlborough’s alumni include Princess Eugenie. Meanwhile, Kate’s former house at Marlborough, Elmhurst, has seen an influx of celebrity children.
Just because they toured Marlborough, does not mean that it’s 100% happening. After all, they actually toured Eton a few years ago with George, and William has reportedly been preparing George for Eton all this time. At least that’s what William’s side has briefed for years. Anyway… it feels stupid to have this level of interest in George’s secondary school, but my god, it has been fascinating to watch this play out so publicly. Kate is really digging in her heels about this and the Windsors must be shocked by that alone. It will be so revealing if Kate gets her way too.

Eton is not the school for British royalty- it is a school that has catered to the aristocracy. William/Harry are the only Windsors who went there and their connection was through their Spencer mother.
Many men have publicly said their time at Eton was hellish and abusive. It’s weird that we discuss George’s education and Kate’s apparent preferences outside of that context.
William and Harry also went to Eton because Prince Charles hated his time at Gordonstoun. Charles, Andrew, and Edward were the first royals to attend regular schools rather than be tutored at home.
And Harry would have fared at Gordonstoun much better, sadly they forced him to go to Eton where his brother ignored him.
I think the whole Andrew debacle actually worked in Kate’s favor and she’s going to get her way on this one. The last thing anyone needs is an excuse for Kate to rebel so I think she’ll win this one as an excuse to keep her happy. I actually think right now a lot of the moves being made are to keep her happy. The Windsors can’t afford another royal divorce or even publicity about marriage problems. I think KP realizes William is not as popular as he believes he is and now they have to keep him somewhat subdued. Willy already does a good job keeping himself out of sight which is probably better than him being on the front lines making an ass of himself.
I actually think the Andrew thing is working in disfavor for her. With all the Andrew stuff a divorce looks like nothing. If they can survive the Andrew mess they can survive William divorcing an unpopular princess of wales. I think they placate her to keep her content…for the time being bc things are being done behind her back. She certainly isn’t getting what she wants and isn’t happy. I think she knows Willy is getting out and she is digging her heels in about George bc the children will be all the access to status and control she will have left.
I don’t understand why people think that a W&K divorce would bring down the monarchy. Charles divorced a very popular and beloved Princess Diana and the monarchy was fine. They weathered significant backlash to her death as well. Kate isn’t nearly as popular as Diana was and she isn’t that newsworthy nowadays. It seems that most of the British people are ambivalent towards the monarchy in general and 3/4 of the queen’s children are already divorced anyway. Who knows if W&K will ever split but I don’t think it would be the end of the world. Hell, with the right spin it may be the fresh new start that the royals need to move forward if William would put the work in. He’s the only one that’s actually necessary for it to move forward.
A divorce would not be nothing because their strategy (whether effective or not) to cope with Andrew has been to present William and Kate as the younger, cleaner, functional alternative to the older generation’s corrupt disfunction. That’s the PR and it falls apart if they divorce.
But W&K PR have been telegraphing that Kate’s health inhibits her from fully participating in the monarchy at this point. She can’t go to Ascot, she can’t do royal tours, she can’t stray too far from her home, nature is her priority, the school runs are her priority, she will only do what brings her joy, and she doesn’t need or want to be a show pony anymore, don’t focus on her fashion anymore. William’s PR is essentially saying that Kate’s health is holding him back as well. How can you present W&K as cleaner, younger, and functional if they don’t show up? They’re MIA for most of the year and don’t plan to be out more. A divorce would be fine after the initial shock wears off.
The thing is, a competent PR person could spin a W&K divorce so that its not a big deal at all – completely amicable, they’re still best of friends, Kate has just realized after years battling cancer that there is more to life and she wants to live out her remaining years in the countryside etc etc.
Key phrase in all that is a “competent PR person.”
@Becks1 Exactly. I think they’ve already been setting her up for this anyway, regardless of any actual divorce. Willam is out here trying to be the work from home king. Kate did 60 events last year, the public is used to not seeing her and they don’t seem that bothered about it. A separation/divorce wouldn’t be a big deal.
It works because it’s PR. It doesn’t have to be consistent. They lean on “Kate’s health is fragile” when they want sympathy and “William and Kate are the fresh young faces the kingdom needs,” when they want to project strength.
It’s why they could claim Kate is a fragile bullied victim when vilifying the Sussexes while also running the “She’s a strong CEO,” stories. It’s about vibes.
But you can’t do “Kate’s health is tragic and sad and deserves sympathy” stories if they are divorcing (William would look like a monster). Nor can you do, “These are the fresh functional young faces,” stories. Divorce cuts all their PR routes.
@Margot but like you said, it doesn’t need to be consistent, so they could very easily use Kate’s health as the impetus for the divorce (especially since they’ve told us she’s in remission etc) – it could be spun as cancer opening her eyes to a whole new world and realizing the royal life is not for her, William deserves a partner who can give 100% and she just wants to focus on her children.
In 10 years they’ll have the kids as the fresh young faces for the monarchy so that’s taken care of.
I think it would be tricky, but it could be done, especially if the divorce is amicable (at least publicly amicable.) Another War of the Wales would be a different story.
We may have to agree to disagree there because I do not see any universe where “William divorces his cancer-stricken wife,” plays well anywhere. Especially when it would look like William’s family was the source of the stress. No matter what PR they slap on it.
And why would they divorce? The marriage benefits them both socially and politically.
So I actually kind of agree Margot. The message would have to be a little more succinct. After cancer, Kate herself realized that she and William, despite loving each other dearly, have come to realize that their love is one of friendship more than romance. It would have to come from Kate and it would have to sound like her idea. It cannot be about just not wanting a royal life in the public eye but also quite specifically that they’ve fallen out of being in love but still respect each other as parents and people. I am not at all saying that this is anything that would ever happen. I’m just throwing in my very unqualified two cents. At this point, I think they’re in it for the long haul? My question lately has always been more about how to keep separation information contained as the kids get older.
@Margot they would word it differently than that I’m sure, lol.
But honestly for me the broader point is that no one is indispensable to this institution – not Kate, heck not even William. They forced a king to abdicate. They drove out a much more beloved and popular princess of wales. And if any aspect of the cancer story isn’t what we’ve been told, then Kate loses all leverage.
All that said – right now, I’m not sure a divorce is in the cards. I think they were on the brink a few years ago and now I think they have renegotiated.
But as for why they would divorce – it would be because william clearly loathes her and doesn’t want to be around her. And if details of their separate lives ever got out, that would be a problem in a way that its not for Charles and Camilla and wasnt for QEII and Phillip. You can’t spin them as the greatest royal love story ever if people know William lives full time at KP.
I agree with Becks that if William really wants a divorce he will get one. They already managed it with Charles and he’s now king. The pushback he’s facing has to do with how Andrew was handled or not handled and how Harry has been treated. Cheating and divorcing Diana is not one of his issues.
What I do think is that Kate does not want a divorce and has leverage to stop it since early 2024. But that leverage may not last forever. At some point people will wonder more overtly if she has recovered and if so why is she not working as much as the elderly.
She may get some wins like where the kids go to school and issues that William doesn’t really care about. But at some point William will do what he wants and he could dump her, even as king. Five years after treatment will be much harder to say poor weak Kate especially if she’s managed to attend Wimbledon and go on all her holidays without issue.
The crown always wins and when William is the crown he’s going to do what he wants to do.
Scooter got money from Epstein for a charity. The Scooters were seen together with Andrew on many occasions. I don’t think it works in Keen’s favor. If Scooter wants to marry someone else, there will be a divorce
Yes, the whole thing depends on how these two want to live the next 4 decades or so. Do they want to continue to stay in their pretend marriage? Then it means they’ll never be able to date anyone else, or even have an affair, which can be discovered. Does William want to have another romantic relationship? Then he must divorce. Because if he’s snapped anywhere with another woman it will be a much worse imagery.
The big problem with that is who would want to marry Scooter. I don’t see them getting a divorce because in reality they do not have to see each other often and as soon as the kids get a bit older in 10 years they will bring what’s lacking in Kate to the table.
It is interesting to see who will get their wish for their preferred school.
I just really hope that George himself has been asked where he wants to go, and that they’ve taken his preference into consideration. We haven’t heard anything about what HE wants.
This part.
This is not a functional family and they do not care what any of their kids think. Birth order and the desire of the parents determine their lives until they are old enough to push back.
The happy family PR is done to distract from this reality.
In every photo, George seems so tense. Like he understands the expectations around him and how he can’t ever do anything wrong, That’s not a happy 12 year old. Being exposed in public and and no being able to act like a normal 12 year old (and dress like one) must be hard.
It’s funny how rich families like to suit up their male heirs. Just like Trump has done with his 20 year old son since he was little.
Team Middleton will get their way, as has been happening more and more.
The Middletons have been getting dragged lately, aside from Carole getting to clown around and make an embarrassment of herself in the failed carol service and ascot it hasn’t been good. Kate definitely has been loosing more and more. It’s interesting you view it differently.
Must be nice to send your kids to exclusive schools and use taxpayer funds to pay for it. The only reason I suspect Marlborough will win is it allows them to continue to skive off due to “school runs.”
I’m pretty sure he would board at Marlborough as well.
I’ve always thought that boarding schools would be out of the picture cuz having all the kids gone during the week would take away their excuses for their lack of engagements.
Does it matter where these children attend school? It’s not like they won’t get passed if they fail a class or have to worry about not getting into a university that will hand them a degree based on titles more than achievement like they did with Peggy.. George has a job waiting that education isn’t a requirement to hold only the right birth order is required. I feel like these “the great dilemma of George’s schooling choice” as planted distraction articles WanK love to dust off every few months when they get some uncomfortable scrutiny.
100% to everything you said, especially the last point. They’re trotting out the kids as a distraction.
Yeah I was thinking the same. It’s hardly like they’re setting it up that they’re going to actually give him a choice and whether or not he will be the heir. It’s not even like their operating like the other European royal families where they expect the heir to have an actual job for a while to get world experience.
Wherever he goes for secondary education, and then on to University it’ll all end the same way. He’ll be expected at 25 to become a working Royal and support and prop up his lazy parents. And they hope that he will be more charming, engaging, and a harder worker to hide for all of their deficiencies.
This is the real story. It is irrelevant where any of these kids attend school because they are the ultimate nepobabies and will get what they want because of their family name.
Neither William nor Kate are particularly bright and would have failed in the real world. Going to the right prep school is only something the social climbing peasants need to think about. Which makes the references to the Middletons funny because Kate making friends with Emilia what’s her face at Malborough is the primary thing that helped her achieve her goal of getting William to propose.
George in particular, but also Charlotte and Louis will all be in the reverse position and be the targets of future Kate Middletons. It will be interesting to see if William warns his kids of this in the coming years.
I went to an American boarding school. Last week I was browsing an FB group created by the class in which I graduated, for reunions, (we’re in our third decade) and I saw a link to a petition that one of my classmates had started. It was to force the board of trustees to remove two former head teachers from the board, since they presided over decades of sexual abuse. It was a coed school but depressingly — and predictably — all the victims were girls. I then clicked a link that took me to the Boston Globe and the New York Times which had run massive exposés nearly 10 years ago. I missed it becuase I moved to London ten years before that. It’s like realising Epstein was a colleague of your boss and he was someone you saw regularly. It hit very close to home. All of which is to say, my son attends a day school that is highly ranked.
Bill Barr’s father hired Epstein to teach at one of the elite schools in NYC. I think it was Hunter but I could be wrong.
Middle class and working class families do benefit from going to elite schools for the networking and access to more elite circles, but they also potentially expose kids to being preyed upon.
It was as recent as 2022 when Eton boys yelled racist slurs and misogynistic language at a group of visiting state schoolgirls. If I had a son, I think I could find a better school.
As the royal family, their one job is PR. Eton is not the look.
Kate went to Malborough and was asking about the skin colour of a baby (also stupidly since Archie is 3/4 Caucasian) so it’s not a great advertisement that graduates of Malborough are any less racist.
Why should children whose parents are paying the same ridiculous amount of money be locked away so that Willy and Katie and their children can have a private tour. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that you want your children to go to school with children and then you tell the children to get loss so they can tour in private. The crap that that family gets away with. Pulling out all the stops and for what ? Doors to manual daughters already went there so she already knows what the school is about so I am sure it’s just fine for any future doors to manual offsprings. I don’t care who their father is
What will be interesting is that it looks like not everyone is going to keep quiet for this family and I suspect more things will be revealed once George and Charlotte attend secondary school. Eton had a visit but far fewer details were given.
It was stupid to have everyone leave and not be in their presence as it only made things more obvious. Teens are not obsequious especially since most their age don’t care about monarchy.
I’ll say what I’ve said over and over again here – if William cares that much about George going to Eton, he’ll go to Eton. Kate has leverage but only so much. If George goes to Marlborough, it will be because William doesn’t care.
Like others have said, its interesting and sad that his interests and preferences (George’s) don’t seem to be a factor here.
Kate is not anti boarding at all, but I think she’s pretending she is because the kids being at home are an excuse for her to not work. But I do think George will board wherever he goes. I still sort of think he and Charlotte board now at Lambrook and that’s why school breaks are such a big deal.
That would be wild if they are currently boarding and it’s just a secret. It’s also possibly that wanting Marlborough is about the kids being able to board at the same school in the future.
George and Charlotte will board because the school will have to add security enhancements to the grounds for them in any case.
Charlotte and Louis still need school runs for now so that excuse still works. The real story is when Louis has to attend secondary school.
I also agree that they are boarding at Lambrook more often than they will ever admit.
There’s a cost to installing security into a school. It’s no small thing, I worked very close to Weatherby School when William and Harry were there and got to see some of the behind the scenes security, it’s not just a PPO following the kid around, there’s way more to it and that comes at a cost. It was already in place so it would have made sense to send George there when they lived at KP but, no, Kate wanted him driven through peak hour London traffic to a school on the far side of Hyde Park. The security for George will always be more because of being the heir so security will always be a consideration so why not send him to Eton where it’s already in place? But consider that Kate’s new house took 150 acres and that children’s learning centre for security reasons then she probably won’t care that Marlborough, or whatever school she decides on next week, will need to spend lots of money upgrading their security systems? Money that could have gone on schooling for the other children who go there? Kate and William won’t be paying, it will therefore end up being at a cost to the British taxpayers?
Kate will never care. It was also weird that at the time there was also a school near KP from the same school but she refused to send George there.
I suspect the fact that Charlotte can’t go to Eton is part of the reasoning. But really it’s close to Carole and Mike and that is the main reason she’s pushing this school.
Breaking news: Rich royal kid is going to attend an elite, overpriced school.
This story is only interesting as a proxy for the Kate-William battle for supremacy. And I admit some interest in how it turns out. But I continue to be bemused by how the Brits put up with paying for all of this.
It has to be insulting for British parents who have kids who would thrive at those schools but they can’t afford to send them because their taxes fund these rich dilettantes where choice of school will make no difference in their future, unlike those working class and middle class kids.
I understand that George attending Eton, he would board there full time, even on weekends and only come home at school breaks. Attending Marlborough, George would only board during the week. I have seen boarding students that went full time including weekends, during the week it was okay, on the weekends w were bored and lonely and more likely to get in trouble. Those students didn’t have weekend breakfasts with their families, nothing. It isn’t like camp where activities are planned throughout the weekend and camp counselors live with a small groups and lead them in a close cabin and do things with the larger groups. Full-time boarding school is lonely and isolating.
My brother and I both went to single-sex day schools. I went to all-girls school and he went to all-boys.
We were both awkward kids with social and autistic issues amongst other problems. Single-sex school didn’t help, it exacerbated our issues, neither of us could deal well with the opposite sex and we’ve paid all our lives. Single-sex schools *can* be okay, I don’t completely rule them out for everyone, but it wasn’t have been right for us and boarding would have been much, much worse
I think weekends at a place like Eton would be different because everyone is there on the weekends. At schools where some kids are day students, some board part time and some board full time the environment is going to be very different. But at Eton, everyone boards full time – so its not going to be as lonely and isolating as what you’re picturing.
For single sex – there are a lot of benefits to single sex education, especially for girls (my brothers and I both went to single sex schools and all three of us thrived at our respective schools.) but its not a one size fits all solution and is not going to be for everyone. But generally speaking for girls, they’re more than “okay” and girls tend to benefit a great deal from a single sex education.
A couple of posters have asked if taxpayers will pay for George’s tuition (and Charlotte and Louis) and the answer seems to be no: it was reported that Eton allows the heir to the throne to attend for free. I have always thought that was the reason that William, who is cheap to the bone, preferred Eton.
Now that Eton and Marlborough are the two finalists for George, however, I imagine Marlborough was only too happy to match the offer for George’s free tuition, so now it comes down to other factors. And ofc Marlborough will offer free tuition to Charlotte and George so they 1) please the future Queen and 2) will easily recoup that due to future increased admissions, even long after the Wales children attend.
Would it make security costs lower if they all attended the same school? I don’t think the Wales actually give a f-ck about that but it’s something to consider. Technically only working royals get security so what happens when Charlotte is 18? Even now Charlotte is not the heir.
William is going to ignore all the things he did to his brother and pretend his middle and youngest children aren’t spares any different than Harry.
@Jais there are a few different factors, such as
–Eton doesn’t have to revamp their security as they’ve had heirs to the throne before. Marlborough would have to do extensive renovations to the grounds to make it safe enough for George (Eugenie when she attended wouldn’t have required the same level of security). I assume that Marlborough will eat that, or it will get charged to the taxpayer as with all Royal security. For certain William and Kate won’t pay a penny
–In terms of labor, eg actual RPOs it’s probably the same cost to the taxpayer whether they go to Eton or Marlborough
–Eton parents know the drill with royal and other VIP students and won’t be fussed at any extra security measures. Marlborough apparently is mostly new money and the parents there would be more likely to have to get used to making sacrifices on their part to enable the heir and his siblings to attend. That means more vetting (increased security costs, paid for by taxpayers). In terms of other direct cost to taxpayers, there will be more work for courtiers and other parts of the Firm to help parents to understand the increased security around the Wales’ kids, requirements for NDAs, etc
That’s true about the reno for Marlboro but either way, Charlotte is likely to go there at some point, yeah? So they might as well start doing it. Maybe there is another option for Charlotte idk but it does seem the most likely.
I think that yes, it would be cheaper if they just have to put in the security once, but then it feels like they’re making a “one size fits all” kind of choice. Charlotte may not like Marlborough. it may not be a good fit for Louis. So then they end up at different schools anyway.
I wonder who is covering these security costs. I’m sure not the Wales – but would it be the government or the school, or a little of both?
Are people supposed to care where he goes to school
I’ve read that Eton is academically extremely intense, and that a good chunk of the student body is also academically intense, including foreign students. Gone are the days when aristocratic kids could coast through if they managed to master some Latin declensions (Churchill wondering why he’d ever have to address a table–Oh table! in the vocative–comes to mind). In this respect, it’s now a lot like the top US boarding schools or Sidwell Friends in DC (day school where the Obama and Clinton kids went)–kids are expected to do sports and other ECs on top of hours of daily homework. Plus the social life is still intense. You read that Eton profs gave both William and Harry an easy pass, but are they still willing to do that in this day and age?
Marlborough, on the other hand, has a reputation for being filled to the gills with aristos who didn’t get into Eton and social strivers like the Middletons. I’m sure the academics at Marlborough are challenging, too. To me that spells a completely different but equally awful set of social pressures, but YMMV.
None of us knows George. From the outside he seems anxious and introverted, but who really knows? Would he sink or swim in an academic pressure cooker? In a social pressure cooker? These are questions for George himself and his parents to answer, and you’d hope they’d do the best for him, but it also seems like there’s a risk George is a pawn in some proxy war between his parents.
The fact that Marlborough is even in contention tells me that the Middletons are using this school as a power play against William for some unknown reason. Could it be a quid pro quo for whatever happened to Kate and put her out of commission for over a year? I just hope that they send George to whichever school will serve him best.
If they are still touring, it’s because they haven’t made up their minds yet. The schools sent out acceptances earlier this year, so everyone knows who has gotten in where by now. This is probably the third or fourth time they’ve toured.
It looks like Kate and Wills are still fighting over the final decision.
Marlborough is now offering a brand new house where the children get the full boarding experience except they go home at the end of the day. For example, they get to school for breakfast and leave between 6-10 each evening after dinner and all the other things.
I’m wondering if Eton won out because William wanted George not to be a day kid leaving right after school, and this is what Marlborough has come up with as an alternative bc Kate doesn’t want Greg to board yet.
