Richard Kay: It’s ‘unsettling’ to see Prince Harry ‘lose something of his focus’

Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex attend the 91st Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in London, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019.

Yesterday, we discussed the curious Telegraph story about Prince Harry allegedly telling his close friends that he missed his Army life and while he didn’t “blame Meghan,” he still wonders what could have been if he was still living the life of a protected prince/soldier. The piece was suspicious as hell, especially because it had echoes of previous hit jobs on Harry, which (in my mind) were orchestrated by Prince William. This has been one of William’s go-to smears on his brother for several months now, that Harry is, at heart, just a dumb soldier who went AWOL from the royal family as he fell into Meghan’s enemy territory. It seemed unlikely to me that Harry or his close friends are calling up the Telegraph to talk about how Harry misses the Army, that’s all I’m saying.

To make this situation even more curious, Richard Kay at the Daily Mail has jumped on board and expanded on the Telegraph’s exclusive. You might remember that Prince William has gone to Kay a few times over the past couple of years to get “his side” out. Notably, William ran to Kay about the Rose Hanbury rumors, and William also ran to Kay immediately following the Sussexit announcement in January, in one of the nastiest pieces I’ve ever read, in which William tried to gaslight his brother about everything. Isn’t it curious then, that Kay picked up this already questionable exclusive from the Telegraph about how Harry is so unhappy and bewildered in LA? Methinks Willileaks rides again.

You can read Kay’s piece here – it’s just a regurgitation of the Telegraph piece, with an exhaustive account of Harry’s Army career, and a dash of “where did it all go wrong” and “why did he have to move to America?” Here are a few parts from Kay’s piece:

How intriguing, then, that this cri de coeur should come now, five weeks into his and Meghan’s new locked-down life in Los Angeles. And how poignant. It is hard to escape the sense that he has somehow just woken up to what he has given up in the land of his birth.

It has to be said that at one level the [Telegraph’s reported] comments demonstrate an extraordinary lack of self-awareness from the Prince. It was Harry, after all, who walked out on the royals, not the other way round. But what about those sad reflections that suggest he hankers for those days in service? It is certainly the case that the Army delivered some of the happiest and most stable periods in the prince’s life. Of all the unintended consequences of Harry’s decision to step back from royal life, the loss of his military connections was surely the most heartfelt.

Ever since he left that sense of purpose and structure that the Army provided, something seems to have been missing. Of course he has found happiness with Meghan, but he also appears to be somehow less contented. His friends will doubtless insist that this is all the fault of a mischievous Press and is the reason he decided to sever links with tabloid newspapers.

All the same, there is something unsettling about watching the Harry of today compared with the Prince of only a year ago. Photographs of him in Los Angeles with a bandana wrapped around his face – his Covid-19 protection – while distributing food packages but walking a few paces behind his wife could not be more of a contrast with Harry the immaculately turned-out soldier. Are they of a man who has perhaps lost something of his focus?

[From The Daily Mail]

The truth is, these royal reporters and commentators cry about how they’re totally over the Sussexes but they can’t keep Harry and Meghan’s name out of their mouths. The truth is that no amount of gaslighting and bullying-from-afar will turn back time and get Harry to somehow rejoin the Army and marry some white English woman. And I feel like it’s gotten quite creepy to see William’s favorite journalists harping on and on about this.

“walking a few paces behind his wife .”

I wish they wouldn’t drag the military into this need to uphold toxic masculinity. And Harry is working on Headfit so he still maintains his ties to the military

    • GR says:

@Silas – yes, I noticed that phrase too! What century is it?!

    • Ainsley7 says:

Prince Philip has been walking a few paces behind his wife for decades. He was never considered less of a soldier.

      • Ali says:

Prince Philip is a special case. He at least cheated on his wife to show he didn’t respect her. Prince Harry isn’t like that.

      • Ellaus says:

+ Prince Philip resented walking behind his wife, and not being the most important member of the family, especially the first years of their marriage. Has he come to terms with his wife being more important than him? Well…-yes, but it hasn’t always been a cake walk, as he has a stronger personality than Elizabeth. But comparing a 90+ y.o. with a 36 y.o is not feasible….

      • notasugarhere says:

Philip knew he was always going to walk behind his wife and accepted it. That’s why she put him in charge of their private lives, to make a compromise.

@Ainsley7 said: “Prince Philip has been walking a few paces behind his wife for decades. He was never considered less of a soldier.”

Yes, that’s true @Ainsley7, but as others point out, the circumstances are very different. Philip was respectful of his wife being Queen. But Philip and his Uncle Louis Mountbatten (who was also related to Elizabeth), probably had held out hope for Philip being more fully accepted with more behind-the-scenes status, power and control. The British government was solidly against Philip asserting any control over Elizabeth as pertaining to monarchical influence.

Elizabeth was only 25 when she ascended to the throne, and she was a young, naive 25 at that. Her parents loved and nurtured her, but they were narrowminded and old-fashioned in not recognizing the importance of educating both of their daughters.

It was British government officials who became aghast when they discovered 13-year-old Elizabeth’s lack of academic knowledge. The government hurriedly tried to teach Elizabeth as much as they could of British history and governmental procedures. But they ignored poor Margaret, who had been overly spoiled by her parents, in order to compensate for her being the spare. As we know, this treatment of Margaret was devastating in the long run.

@Ali said: “Prince Philip is a special case. He at least cheated on his wife to show he didn’t respect her. Prince Harry isn’t like that.”

The comparisons are not apt or equal obviously. It’s apples and oranges. As well, Philip definitely loves and respects Elizabeth. They do have a solid bond. They had a lot of trouble in their marriage because Philip is a macho guy and it was hard for him to take a back seat. It was even harder for him to have to give up his service in the Navy. He really fretted at that, because they had both hoped it wouldn’t happen for many years. Still, Philip knew and grudgingly accepted the fact he’d have to walk paces behind his wife, in public.

The cheating is a different story altogether. He didn’t cheat to show he disrespected his wife. He respected and loved his wife. But the upper classes were always known for cheating, and Philip was quite the macho, randy fellow, especially in his younger days. As long as he was discreet, the Queen eventually accepted it, though she had trouble with it in the beginning of their married life, and when she became Queen which is when Philip’s straying worsened. We don’t really know the half of it.

They all should have realized just how fragile and unhealthy King George VI was with his rampant, irresponsible smoking habit, and his excitable nerves. Witnesses tell the story of King George VI flying into pitiful rages. Only his wife, the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was able to calm him down and soothe his temper tantrums. I’ve read there was regret that Princess Elizabeth was named after her mother. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon hated being known as ‘the Queen Mother.’ Queen Mary never had that problem.

@notasugarhere said: “Philip knew he was always going to walk behind his wife and accepted it. That’s why she put him in charge of their private lives, to make a compromise.”

Yes, at that time in the late 1940s, Philip definitely accepted the protocol, even if a bit grudgingly. He was loving and supportive toward Elizabeth always. In private, he probably teased her a lot, made her laugh, and asserted his masculine authority. She surely liked that. But when it came to her royal duties, she was protective and she didn’t really allow his interference.

Elizabeth and Philip had both hoped they’d enjoy many years of happiness in the military. Elizabeth is said to have been quite charmed by and very comfortable with being a navy wife. It was disconcerting for them both when King George VI died. At the same time, Elizabeth seems to have also delighted in being elevated to the throne. It was probably a mix of ego and devotion to duty that saw her through. She has a feisty temperament, which is how she got to marry Philip in the first place. She set her desires upon him at the age of 13 and she never wavered, even despite her parents’ initial disapproval.

Still at age 25, Elizabeth was a very vulnerable Queen. The old men in the British government took advantage of her youth and naivete, so she had to learn how to cope the hard way. It must have been difficult with Philip trying to sway her behind-the-scenes, and the government trying to assert control, even over her family-related matters. It took a number of years before Elizabeth decided to allow her direct heirs, not in line to the throne, to officially use the surname, Mountbatten-Windsor. She still kept the House of Windsor designation for the monarchy. So it was a workable compromise that helped mollify Philip’s ‘I’m a bloody amoeba!’ feelings.

      • notasugarhere says:

All the women in the Windsor household deferred to Philip in family matters, which is why he was in charge of all family things plus the private estates. Queen Mum, Margaret, QEII. They considered him the man of the family. He even gave Margaret away at her wedding.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ Right @notasugarhere, Philip essentially took the place of King George VI as the male head of the family. Philip simply had a stronger male personality though than did George VI (Bertie) who relied heavily upon his wife and his advisers.

For sure the Queen handed all domestic matters and estate management over to Philip. It worked well for Elizabeth because she didn’t want to deal with family conflicts. Plus, she wanted Philip to exert his control in the family sphere instead of trying to influence her in her royal duties. Of course, she did listen to him privately, but she made sure to keep separate her role as a wife from her role as Queen.

You’re also right that the RRs’ silly complaints about Harry allowing Meghan to walk in front of him have nothing to do with the dynamic between Elizabeth and Philip.

BTW, the queen not being comfortable dealing with family conflicts is increasingly more evident today. Philip has aged and he’s no longer able to assert his authority. With the chaos in the family, it’s clear that Philip hasn’t been the controlling autocrat for some time.

Neither is Charles comfortable in the role of dealing with family conflicts.

    • notasugarhere says:

It has nothing to do with Philip and Liz, which is a spouse walking behind a monarch. The RRs are angry to see Harry not forcing Meghan to walk behind him, as royal protocol would decree.

      • Yuzu says:

No, these royal reporters are mad that they either A) Don’t have anything worthwhile to look at if they were walking behind a woman OR B) Don’t have anything worthwhile for someone to look at while walking behind them.

They’re used to partnering with hard-looking women who they feel don’t deserve to be looked back at, so this is really something new to them.

      • notasugarhere says:

They’re angry about many things, including loss of revenue off attacking Meghan, but the racist RRS are angry that Meghan doesn’t walk behind Harry.

      • notasugarhere says:

They’re angry about many things, including loss of revenue off attacking Meghan, but the racist RRS are angry that Meghan doesn’t walk behind Harry.

      • Yuzu says:

I’m in total agreement, but after that article from another reporter describing how this like viewed Meghan as exotic and sexy, I have no doubt in my mind that they would happily walk behind her if in the same position. But they are not and are bitter for it. Racism comes from many things and I can just feel the jealousy in the energy they give.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

LOL, OMG @Yuzu! That’s so funny and probably very true. Too true! Ha ha ha! 😂 🤣 🤣

      • notasugarhere says:

We’re not talking about RRs walking behind Meghan. Their anger is about how Harry treats his wife as his equal instead of an also-ran as William treats Kate. Public or private, Harry treats Meghan like she matters and that angers the RRs.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ That’s pretty clear @notasugarhere. I think @Yuzu was having a bit of fun in a sarcastic way re characterizing the RRs obsession and OTT complaining about this. Of course, it’s about them being angry that Meghan is a WOC and Harry treats her like a queen. It’s also about misogyny, among a lot of prejudiced attitudes.

    • molly says:

God, they will not let the WALKING part go. It’s brought up in so many of these articles, and it’s getting creepy. Oh no, *clutches pearls* the walking!!!

      • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ Right! @molly, @notasugarhere, @Yuzu, you all got them dastardly RR creeps on the mark! They not foolin’ anyone who has a brain in their heads.

Plus, Prince Harry had a wonderful mother who taught him manners. He loves and appreciates women. He adores and cherishes his wife, who he looks at as his equal if not his better half! That’s a fact. And, as Yuzu expressed so eloquently, Harry knows he’s got a sweet view ahead of him when he walks protectively behind his precious Meg! Harry has always been relaxed and indifferent about ancient, old-fashioned, unnecessary royal protocol.

Even QE-II don’t care about following useless ‘gray men’ protocol orders like stiff mannequins or robots, all the time! Michelle Obama revealed that with a timely anecdote in her recent memoir.

These RR need to get up off their lazy behinds and get a real job! Leave the Sussexes be, you leeches.

    • yinyang says:

One step forward, two steps back *sighs.

    • Tessa says:

So which is it. Kate is praised for wearing the trousers and has walked in front of William.

      • Silas says:

Empowerment is for white women, not WoC who don’t understand or appreciate tradition and protocol.

Also apparently Kate somehow pulls off never overshadowing William while also taking charge. Translation: the Karens and Chets of the world don’t feel threatened by Kate.

    • Mustlovedogs says:

Yes. It’s so annoying! And makes me really cranky to read this rubbish. Then I imagined CB reading it to Kaiser during a podcast with that ridiculous music playing in the background… and it reminded me that it is nothing more than unhinged tabloid ranting. (Thanks CB and K! x)

    • LadyPrincessJr. says:

Also, that “he doesn’t blame Meghan” from the previous article is so douchebaggy. Phrased that way, mentioning Meghan at all, is meant to imply that, “It’s Meghan’s fault, but I’m too good to ever blame her.” What a shitty sentiment to put into Harry’s mouth. These guys need to stop showing their nasty.

    • teehee says:

I came here to quote exactly this, too. Of all things to say– like what, a “good man” will have his back to his wife and the mother of his children???
As if this is some sort of disrespect or mistreatment of him, by her?

Its interesting to consider: there is, the BRF roles, and then, there is Harry. You cant confuse the two, and I think what he s doing is very purposefully living his life as HARRY now and not his role. I guess some people only respect the empty roles, and not the people filling them?

…. and basing your entire “understanding” on one tabloid snap which is made in the 1/100th of a second— that’s really informed and enlightened. Heck, we could be writing those articles….

  3. Aria says:

All these things will make harry stay further away from brf. But I cant get over why karma is not hitting the cambriges for the nasty things they have done. Meghan lost her case today and all her haters are celebrating. Seriously karma where the hell are you and why are you not hitting the cambriges??

    • Als Em says:

Please read and understand the judge’s ruling. She did not lose her case.

      • Ali says:

Let’s say it again “Meghan did not lose her case”.

      • Aria says:

I dont understand legal part. What the judgement means ?? Can you explain ??

      • Ali says:

@ARIA Go to Twitter and read @scobie account.

      • C-Shell says:

@aria, also go to @BInvestigates. Byline Investigates was live tweeting last week’s hearing, and they’ve got knowledgeable legal experts breaking down the judge’s ruling. The Sussexes *did not lose their case*, and the judge says they’re free to reintroduce the stricken elements under the appropriate legal theory(ies).

Methinks Willileaks is jealous that Harry is living a life he’s always wanted.

    • Tiffany says:

      This right here.

I totally believe that Cain was the one that leaked Harry’s location while he was stationed in Afghanistan therefore ending his military career (he was on desk duty and was quite disappointed at it), the one Cain so craved and, let’s face it would not have put in the work for anyway.

If Cain can’t have it, no one can.

      • lanne says:

to be fair, it was Matt Drudge who did that. William wasn’t threatened by Harry back then–Harry was his whipping boy. William sucks, don’t get me wrong, but he was actually really supportive of his brother when he returned. His love for his brother, as he’s shown is conditional to Will always having the upper hand. Some king to be.

      • Tiffany says:

@lanne. Thank you for the info.

        Matt Drudge sucks !!!!

      • songbirds_thrive says:

I get you @Ianne, but for sure Will’s pique with his younger brother was still there in those days, lying nascent and dormant.

I saw a documentary about Harry’s military service, in which PC and Will pick Harry up at the airport after his last tour of duty. Harry is interviewed by the media and he begins to become annoyed and emotional when they keep trying to embiggen him and to treat his service heroically. Harry deflects and refers to the ‘real’ heroics of the soldiers who lost body parts. Will quickly puts a stop to the questioning, saying the Prince of Wales is waiting for them. I believe that Will had protective older brother instincts toward Harry, especially in this instance. Still, there’s no mistaking that Will was also quite jealous of Harry being able to serve, and also of how much ‘heroic level’ attention Harry was receiving as a result of his time in the military.

Will has also been jealous of Harry’s athletic exploits. Harry always excelled over Will in polo and in other sports. Since Will is left-handed, he had a very difficult time learning to play polo with his right hand. But he was motivated to improve because of what a natural athlete Harry is, and due to how Harry was always winning.

Remember the cute videos of the two little Wales boys summering with their parents in Spain (with the Spanish royals who are cousins). In one of the videos, little Harry is eagerly trying to pick up a puppy that’s almost as big as he is. Will is holding onto his father’s or his mother’s hand looking disdainfully at Harry. Whether it’s because Will wants to play with the puppy too, or whether Will thinks Harry is showing off and needs to be still for the camera is not clear. I think it’s because Will wants to be holding the puppy, and he resents Harry’s happy-go-lucky, outgoing nature. Of course, such internal feelings are much simpler at a young age, and not that pronounced or concerning. But the differences in their personalities only grew and deepened, as did their sibling rivalry.

For awhile, Will was the star with most of the adoring attention on him. But it definitely didn’t help the brothers’ overall relationship for Will to be overly protected, and Harry to always take the fall in tabloid stories. Harry seemed to accept the situation because he’s easygoing, but possibly the treatment underlies some of his unhappiness with being a member of the royal family.

It turned out to be a good thing anyway for Harry to learn from his mistakes. Will learned nothing but the fact he could get away with always having his way. This has to have contributed to Will’s petty, thin-skinned attitude, and his necessity to surround himself with enablers.

Things might have turned out differently in the brothers’ dynamic had Diana not died when they were at impressionable ages. She had told her friends she wanted her sons to be treated equally, even though she understood and accepted that William would inherit the throne.

  5. Belli says:

    The gaslighting is immense.

I have no doubt he does miss the army a bit because he didn’t actually want to leave at the time but he left long before he met Meghan and because the royal family asked him to!! If he regrets leaving that’s on them, not her!

  6. Sofia says:

Oh give me a damn break. What happened to “We’re not going to write about Harry and Meghan anymore!”

    • songbirds_thrive says:

LOL! They just mouth that, without ever meaning to adhere to it. They are snide and dismissive and pissed off in the way they keep saying they aren’t going to talk about the Sussexes anymore. It’s pitiful their level of obsessive love-hate for both M&H. Although, they reserve most of their hate and scorn for Meghan, they are ridiculously angry with Harry for not behaving the way they want him to. They want to turn back the clock and rewrite Harry’s love life to their own liking. These RR have absolutely no shame.

It’s funny that they all wanted Harry to marry someone like Diana, AND HE DID! But Meghan is just NOT an English rose Diana. Meghan is a smart, confident, self-actualized American WOC, with a mind of her own, combined with sweetness, toughness, class, and sexy ‘hands-off’ non-attainability (meaning ‘look but don’t touch,’ i.e., Harry knew he’d have to ‘up his game’ if he wanted to be worthy of Meghan’s attention and respect).

Plus, Meghan has the worldly experience Diana did not and could not have at the age of 19. The RR wouldn’t have minded so much that Meghan’s an American, as long as she wasn’t a divorced WOC, with a successful career and a strong, assertive manner.

  7. Edna says:

Still trying to revise history and put forth their own narrative. Those British RRs and commentators are next level stalkers. They’re the ones who need help with their own mental health. H&M broke up with y’all…leave them alone.

    • Ali says:

It goes beyond stalking at this point.

    • notasugarhere says:

Yes, they’re pretending it wasn’t the royals (William) had a big part in forcing Harry out of the military long before Meghan was in the picture.

  8. Becks1 says:

Not only is that article just generally gross, but its also….weird. Should Harry be in his full dress uniform as he delivers food to people in need? Why is the bandana-wearing a sign of him being “lost”?

    • Ginger says:

That part was weird to be too. What is wrong with him wearing a bandanna? My husband wears a scarf around his face when he goes out it doesn’t mean he is lost. They are really trying to push this “miserable Harry” narrative. It’s so gross.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

Ha ha, yeah @Becks1, @Ginger, @Dee, they can’t seem to abide Harry looking normal, wearing casual clothes and walking around the streets of L.A. LOL! 😂 🤣

I suppose we haven’t yet seen any of the other royals wearing requisite masks, as of yet, have we? So maybe it was startling to them partly in that respect, heh. Harry preferred the bandana to wearing a mask, or maybe masks were scarce so only Meghan wore one.

As I think about it, maybe these views of the two masked lovebirds triggered ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ vibes in all the RRs. 🤣🤣🤣

Take cover, rotten tabloids and rabid RRs! 😂

    • Dee says:

Yes, that’s the real headscratcher, there. How is his dressing appropriately for public service a problem? Should William have been wearing his uniform for Dad dancing?

      • Ginger says:

I agree Dee. If anyone is lost in that family its William. Harry acts like a typical husband and father. William abandons his family because he clearly doesn’t want to be a husband or father
( at least to Kate. He probably wants it with someone else).

    • Amy Too says:

That was such a stupid and bizarre stretch for “evidence” that he’s lost or come down in the world. Even when he was in the U.K. being a working royal, he wasn’t wearing his dress uniform all the time. And the bit about the face covering, which is state-mandated in lots of places right now because we are in a pandemic, as somehow being a poignant illustration of how sad he is? Bizarre.

It’s like if someone saw a picture of me all dressed up in my wedding gown at a ritzy and beautifully decorated wedding reception and then compared it to a picture of me wearing my pajamas as I wash my face at night and get ready for bed and tried to use the contrast as “proof!” that I was depressed and suffered a great emotional, mental, and social loss. Or a picture of a dad wearing a face mask in the delivery room while he watches his baby being born was used as proof of his shameful and depressed state of mind. Because apparently the concept that it’s appropriate and expected for people to dress differently for different situations is lost on the tabloids.

    • Amy Too says:

I want to respond to Richard Kay with, “Yes, Richard, people DO look differently when they’re wearing different clothing! Good job on an astute observation!” Because that’s really the only response to this “evidence” that he’s put forth.

    • Col says:

Him wearing a bandana as a face shield is pathetic. It doesn’t block droplets as we as a paper mask. Surely someone in his position could do better, or having something made for him. He hasn’t done his research. My husband has even bought a sewing machine and made some for when we run out of our boxed masks – sewing for the first time in ages. At least they are double lined unlike harry’s bandana.

      • notasugarhere says:

And if Harry showed up in an N95, would you be the first to start screaming about how dare he take such a mask from a medical worker?

      • Col says:

There are tons of alternatives to N95s. Run of the mill masks are still better, and tons of small businesses, etsy vendors etc, are making masks. They have access to tailors. Don’t let reality stand in the way of your bias though.

      • Olenna says:

I believe the bandana PH was wearing was given to him by the Angel Food Project charity. A recent video interview with their director shows him wearing the same or similar. Why not donate instead of criticize. I’m sure they’d take unused “box” masks as well as handmade ones or cash donations:
        https://twitter.com/ProjAngelFood
        https://twitter.com/ProjAngelFood/status/1254506299204698114

      • Col says:

Ok you’re right, I could have been nicer. They are helping out and that’s great. I
just want him to set a good example. He has enough time on his hands to do proper research and take this situation seriously.

      • Mtec says:

        @Col
The CDC was advising people to use bandanas as an alternative to proper PPE, to the point where some hospitals even has their medical staff wearing them while they rationed or waited on PPE. Your problem about setting an example for proper mask wearing should not be with Harry, ‘cause by your logic it’s the CDC “not taking this seriously”

You know who didn’t take the situation seriously while the rest of the world was self-isolating and social distancing? The Cambridges. I’m interested to know if you were also disappointed with Will and Kate not wearing any masks, and not standing 6ft apart from others they they visited 111. Isn’t that them “setting a bad example”?

      • notasugarhere says:

Or if Col thinks W&K are setting a bad example by sending their five-year-old germ factory out, without any protective gear, to endanger elders for a PR exercise.

      • Col says:

Any face cover is better than none for those who don’t have one, but a mask is more effective than a bandana.

      • Nic919 says:

Bandannas were being promoted as alternatives to masks in the US and Canada so as to avoid using up medical grade masks. Harry did nothing wrong here.

Now sending off a child to deliver food without gloves or a mask is another story, but we won’t be seeing articles wondering about that.

      • Yuzu says:

Ask your government to set an example by distributing the appropriate masks instead of forcing us to buy them, then. Harry was setting a good example by wearing protection advised by the CDC. If the first part was done, the CDC could tell us to wear better masks, but they can’t.

If you want better, ask better of your elected officials and business leaders in your community.

      • Marigold says:

All any of the cloth masks worn daily by SoCal citizens do is protect others from coughs and sneezes spreading out. They don’t protect anyone from the virus, but they DO limit the physical spray of sneezes and coughs, so when social distancing is observed, that 6′ limit is effective in public.

We still have to go out for food. We still have to go out to see doctors and veterinarians and the like. If we have to go out, covering our nose and mouth–with anything at hand–is a common courtesy and an important mechanism for slowing the spread.

It’s what we’ve been asked to do. We’re all very impressed by your knowledge of medical PP gear. Now…leave him and his bandana alone. He’s doing what he was told to do.

    • Col says:

Marigold, for someone in his position wearing a mask wearing a mask is the bear minimum. Of course any face cover is recommended over nothing at all, that’s not the point. He was also show touching his glasses, face, adjusting his face over. Another half assed attempt at doing things as usual for them as they went to 50 peoples houses. But this is the couple WHO MOVED COUNTRIES IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC. The most egregious disregard displayed for any celebrity I can think of. Can you imagine the furor around here if the Cambridges, or Ben and Ana moved to a different country 4 weeks ago?

  9. Cg2495 says:

Wow the obsession of the BP with this couple is really insane. They claimed to be over them and that they will not write about them but every day they have new “think” pieces. Why they don’t let them be ? He left the U.K. and just want to live his life with his family. I pray they remain safe and just continue to succeed.

    • songbirds_thrive says:

I add my prayers for the Sussexes to yours and to those from thousands of other people of goodwill and good sense! Thank you @Cg2495!

  10. C-Shell says:

    “mischievous Press”????

    👀

If this weren’t so tiresome and outright despicable, I’d be ROLFLMAO. But it is, so I’m grim. Please, someone, make this stop.

    • Andrew’s Nemesis says:

@C- Shell I know, that phrase seriously unsettled me also; as if the Press, assorted paparazzi etc were cheeky chaps along the lines of Just William and the Beano, playing amusing little practical jokes which melt the stony hearts of disapproving adults everywhere. If this does come directly from Penis With Teeth, he has a hell of a nerve in pontificating on mental health – stalking, gaslighting, serious untruths and aggressive racism is ‘mischievous’ or something to ‘get over’?!

      • C-Shell says:

I guess I have tinfoil permanently affixed to my noggin. If R Kay’s name is on it? Yeah, WilliLeaks is behind it, and that makes my stomach roil. Maybe it’s Isolation, but Cain and Unable, and all these douchey a**holes writing this crap, have overreached any margin of tolerance I ever had. Albeit wafer thin. “Mischievous Press” blew me into the heat of a thousand suns.

  11. Rae says:

I think “ The truth is that no amount of gaslighting and bullying-from-afar will turn back time and get Harry to somehow rejoin the Army and marry some white English woman..” sums up my thoughts exactly.

However, it offers a guise for them to offer faux concern whilst shanking them, so it’s not going to die out soon. H and M create clicks, sadly I think we’re going to see this for a long time.

  12. Harper says:

If this is from Willileaks then Kay must be counting on Wills being easily pleased with just lazy, throw-away, negative headlines, because the body of this article, which details Harry’s many, many, many, many admirable accomplishments during his time in the military, just continues to create Harry’s hero narrative.

    • Tessa says:

And I see more of the comments where Kate is the one who “helped the most” Oh yeah she helped herself. And the comments that Harry should have listened to his brother are equally sickening. I think this will come back to bite the Cambridges.

  13. Silas says:

A lot of Harry’s critics insist that his military career was meaningless. They don’t respect his service. They don’t respect him. I think so much of what we see is Harry’s growing pain with what people including his own family thought of him, and his determination to lead a meaningful life and not be a prop for someone else.

    • Dee says:

Harry’s military service was much closer to the “real thing” than any of the other contemporary royals.

      • Izzy says:

Not closer. It WAS the real thing.

      • Dee says:

I mean no disrespect to Harry. I remember his being upset that a journalist revealed his location in Afghanistan and he had to be moved.

  14. RoSco says:

He hasn’t lost focus, he’s shifted focus.

  15. notasugarhere says:

Harry’s Thomas the Tank Engine & Meghan’s SmartWorks video getting loads of hits, HeadFit launch, and the Apple series with Oprah coming soon. Lost his focus? Appears Harry has found his focus, especially when seeing his abusive brother for what he truly is.

  16. Louise says:

What people who don’t live in London don’t realise is that with money, its the best city in the World and Harry lived in SW7! Once you live in London and move out (I have) its very difficult to find your groove afterwards. He would have had a great London life.

I think just geographically, he maybe struggling as reports are saying. You can’t walk around in LA. Its a very different life. If ANYTHING brings him back to the UK, I think it would be London…and living in London.

    • Aria says:

Harry lived all his life in london and saw what it is like to live in london. The life we have in london may different for him as royal. He walked away not because he hate london , it’s because royals and tabloids. Or maybe he fed up with cold weather and choose to live in sunny LA. LA is much safer than london with constant terrorist thread .

    • Sofia says:

Harry hasn’t even lived full time in London since April 2018.

      • notasugarhere says:

Plus for a decade before that, he wasn’t living in London. Highgrove was home, then he was shipped to boarding school. After Sandhurst, it was military digs. London isn’t his home.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

Right @Sofia, and others, London was not a permanent, fixed home for Harry. He grew up off and on at KP, but mostly lived at Highgrove prior to attending boarding school. And, still Highgrove was the place Harry & Will called home. They even had their own ‘bad boys’ club in the basement at Highgrove, which their father PC allowed.

After Eton, Harry spent time for his gap year in Argentina and Australia or Africa. Then he was at Sandhurst learning and loving how to become a soldier. After being forced to retire from the military, Harry eventually began traveling on tours as a bachelor. He was given Nottingham Cottage to crash at whenever he was in London. It was his bachelor pad, likely until he met Meghan and she made it more of a home.

Will made a lame joke after M&H’s engagement about being glad that Harry would no longer be stealing from his refrigerator at KP. (Will didn’t mention Kate when he spoke about being glad younger spare cut-up would be keeping his grubby fingers out of his refrigerator). 😉

    • MsIam says:

Is Harry not allowed to come back to London? Do they not still have a house there? Is he not still a citizen? Plus he did not live in “London”, from what I understand, they lived an hour away. So of all the “Come back, Harry” arguments I’ve seen, this one seems pretty lame. Plus, in case you forgot, it wouldn’t be just him, he has a wife and kid too, you know. Who were treated pretty shitty during their time in “ London”.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

@MsIam, all of these silly ‘come back Harry’ arguments are lame, OTT and ridiculous. It’s just something for the rotten RRs to ignorantly bemoan and obsess over because they have nothing better to do than to stay up in the Sussexes’ personal business, chiefly for clicks.

And of course, it’s being used as fodder for them to continue painting a lame, asinine, untruthful ‘Sussexit’ narrative.

    • Yoyo says:

Harry was living in Windsor, why would a zip code matter, if you’re miserable, be it SW7 or E17.

    • Mary says:

@Louise: “you can’t walk around in LA.” Unfortunately, Harry couldn’t really walk around London much either by himself. Maybe he likes the space that LA privides.

Also, I beg to differ on best city to live in if you have money. I lived in Paris for several years as a poor starving student (and while there spent some time in London) and always thought it was the best city to live in if you are either very poor or very rich ….with Vienna a close second.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

To be honest, Harry probably loves living anywhere, as long as it’s with Meg and Archie! 😍

    • Bohemian Angel says:

London is NOT the best city in the world, I’m a Londoner and have spent most of my 50 years here, but for me I think Paris is a LOT better than London as is Edinburgh and possibly Glasgow, the only thing about these scottish cities is the weather, you also get a lot of brick for your money and can live a good life. I have lived in both Paris and Edinburgh but came back to London for solely family issues and I really can’t wait to leave again. Yes London is a great city (was a lot better in the 90s) but not the best city, there is a big wide world out there and depending on what your looking for you can easily find your groove away from ‘home’. Harry might love LA and never move back.

      • L4frimaire says:

The city of London wasn’t the issue with the Sussexes, but rather certain inhabitants and family members. Lots of great cities to live in. I’ve met many ex- Londoners in my city and they aren’t exactly clamoring to move back. Again, I will stress that this has only been 1 month since they stepped down. Who knows where they’ll be or where they’ll live in a year. The British press are really going through some things and just writing so many bizarre articles. Why exactly do they want him to go back there? For more of the same? I don’t live in LA but actually really like it, it’s a great city, and I’m very biased toward the Bay Area. Relocating to a new country is a process, ask Meghan, but it’s way more optimistic than staying in a London/Windsor putting up with constant abuse. I really want to know what the Brits want out of this, this continuous trolling? These reactions are so deranged and make no sense at all. They never have and just disgusted by the whole saga and what they did to this woman. I really wish them much success and happiness.

    • GirlMonday says:

      Stop projecting

    • (TheOG) jan90067 says:

Beg to differ, Louise. LA is an AMAZING city! We have top restaurants, theater (ok, not Broadway, but a LOT of smaller theaters putting on fantastic productions!), there is always something to do/somewhere to go (again, maybe not now, in lockdown), but otherwise, you can go hiking, swimming, walk at the beach, the piers, the Promenade… you can go to the Planetarium day or night and sky gaze, we have great parks, and mostly, we have pretty much the best weather bar few. You can be in the mountains OR the desert OR local wine country (Santa Inez Valley) in 2-21/2 hrs. We have one of the most magnificent, panoramic coastlines in the world along PCH.

And please don’t forget, the area that Meg and Harry are living in, and will finally settle in, will be equal to a London home (albeit not a palace).

I wouldn’t fret that Harry will miss London in *this* way; only in the way that it was his hometown.

      • (TheOG) jan90067 says:

ETA: And yes, you CAN walk around LA… it’s spacious. And unless you call a pap, a lot of “stars” live nicely under the radar: you don’t see them or their kids. NO one would’ve known about H&M delivering meals for Project Angel Food if the charity had not released it (most likely with their ok). WHO KNEW they were even IN LA, until they were ready for people to know.

So don’t worry about Harry not being able to walk around LA. He and his family will be just fine here. They will have a GREAT life here.

    • Couch potato says:

Ehh, millions of people around the world prefer to live in the countryside, not jn cities. Harry’s had access to both his whole life, and he and Meghan prefered Windsor over a London appartement. They still have Frogmore, and they’ll have plenty of trips back to UK over the years to come.

    • Nic919 says:

Right now none of the royals are in London so I don’t know what this is about.

    • AGreatDane says:

LOL I’ve lived in London and I’ve lived in LA. There’s nothing to miss.

    • Beanie says:

Harry’s time “living” in London, for all it’s benefits was also full of press following him everywhere he went and camped outside KP when he was there, following him to parties, Palace courtiers watching his every move…
And sorry to say IMHO, even with all the money in the world, London is not the “best city in the World”. It’s crowded, dirty, noisy, damp, parking and driving is a nightmare etc. I speak as someone who has lived in London, NY, San Diego and other large cities in the Commonwealth,

  17. Ginger says:

Harry has done something that no other royal has EVER done. He picked his wife and son over a racist institution. The press don’t know what to do with that. Their jobs are to build the RF up and make them untouchable. They think everyone wants to be Prince or Princess. When you have a blood member picking a life of normalcy over castles and wealth, you know their is something seriously wrong. They don’t know how to spin it other than “Harry is miserable with his wife and son and NEEDS to come back”. They are at a lose. Harry and Meghan don’t need to do a tell all. Them leaving shows how bad the RF and press really are.

  18. Bella says:

    Bleurgh.

  19. Case says:

So disgusting how they talk about him as though he’s not a grown many who can think for himself and make choices with the woman he chose to spend the rest of his life with that will work best for their family. He might miss the military, and he might miss home, but I doubt he misses a lifestyle that constantly put his wife in the line of fire, just like it did his mother.

  20. Elizabeth says:

Of course William would run to his mother’s favorite RR to gaslight his brother. It seems that he’s inherited some of Diana’s less noble qualities. While Harry hates the RR because of how they treated his mother, William has no qualms snuggling up to some of the worst of them.

    • Tessa says:

William is more like his father now.

      • Tessa says:

THe compassion gene is missing in William. and I think he gets super angry when he does not get his way. the Queen and Charles indulged him. He felt he could order Harry around and tell him to drop her.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ @Tessa, I don’t think it’s the Queen and Charles ‘indulging’ Will as much as it is adoration from the public due to his first child, heir-to-the-throne status, and to the fact he was quite handsome and had a smile like his mother’s when he was growing up. He’s completely lost his good looks by this point. It could also be some of the ugly in his personality manifesting in his looks.

Mostly, I believe that after Diana’s death, Will was ‘indulged’ by the palace p.r. and courtiers who covered up his youthful misdeeds. Apparently, the Queen and PC did not see the danger in that state-of-affairs. Harry was not protected from the media, but Will was. So of course, Will grew up thinking he could get away with anything, and that having his way is all that matters.

I read a 2017 article by Robert Jobson (a biographer of PC) who claimed that Will is thin-skinned and temperamental in private, and that he has refused to ‘listen to the Queen and Prince Charles.’ Jobson went on to say that it was to the point where PC and the Queen decided to back off and allow Will to ‘learn from his own mistakes.’ Now that’s fairly laughable because now it’s too late. Will is an adult and set in his ways, and thus he’s apparently stuck with his pissy personality.

The funny thing is that no RR tends to write such critical, revealing articles about Will. The only reason that one was written is because Jobson may have gotten the go-ahead to pen it, in order to slap Will back for skipping 2017 Commonwealth Service to go on a guys ski trip and be caught on tape Dad-dancing and flirting with other women at a ski resort bar in Vail. Kate was taking her own vacation at the time with some of her female acquaintances, reportedly.

Kate forgave Will I suppose, but she likely used his transgression as leverage to convince Will they should have a third child. And she gloried in her third pregnancy. I’m sure that’s why Louis is probably Kate’s precious favorite child. The one she may never have had the chance to birth.

      • FicklePickle says:

To be fair, both Charles and Diana were incredibly messy vindictive lying bitches who were CONSTANTLY using the tabloids to attack each other for roughly a decade. Charles is a lot better now, mainly because he’s managed to live long enough to grow up and get over himself. Mostly.

Most people manage that by their mid-twenties to mid-thirties but the aristocracy is well known for not leaving adolescence until their mid-forties to mid-fifties, if they EVER do…which puts Harry ahead of the curve and William right on track.

    • Harla says:

It’s often struck me that Harry inherited the best traits from both of his parents, while it appears that William inherited the worst. I’m finding it rather interesting to observe over the years.

    • notasugarhere says:

Both Diana and Charles played fast and loose with the RRs, along with being temperamental, selfish, and all about their own PR. Wm is just like that in that way, while Harry inherited their work ethics and human touch.

    • Yuzu says:

Personally, I believe William and Kate are feeling the heat of being the only game in town. The RR is likely letting them know that they are not the cash cows that his brother and sister-in-law are, so they either need to step up the glitz, glamour, and scandal (the kids aren’t cutting it), or they need to start selling out family again. It’s gross to see.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ I’m sure this is true, but it’s exceedingly laughable. The tabs and RR wouldn’t need to be telling Will this before Harry met Meghan. As we know, Meghan brought new and fresh interest to the royal firm, by virtue of her relatability, her sassy confidence, and her classy, edgy fashion sense. Also, M&H have such a hot, sexy romance so everyone wants to know about them. They have a huge number of fans along with a vicious contingent of haters all over the world. This creates clicks and that’s why M&H are constantly in the news.

I wish the huge coverage and interest would be for the right reasons, which is M&H’s passion for doing good in the world. Unfortunately, royal family conflict, young love, sex & glamour, lies and misrepresentations all sell.

M&H exhibit a rare love, which everyone would love to experience, so there’s a lot of jealousy that’s rampant too. Plus Harry has always been the most popular of the British royals because of his down-to-earth personality, and how everyone who’s old enough to remember can’t forget his sad young face as he walked behind his mother’s coffin.

What most people don’t realize is that a love like M&H share is not only rare, it must be nurtured and sacrifices have to be made. M&H told us in their engagement interview that they made a conscious commitment to each other, and that involves a lot of work. Even though the rewards can be tremendous, love still involves work and good communication.

Moreover, M&H’s love and happiness has been heavily tested on all sides and over-examined by the media from the very beginning. A lot of people want the love and the rewards without taking on the hard work which is necessary to help make a relationship last.

  21. Janet says:

The reality is that like anyone else who moves to a new country, Harry is probably experiencing culture shock and that *may* last for a longer than habitual amount of time due to not actually being able to get out there and mingle. Not ideal timing to arrive in your new country/life.

And in this case, he’s the “trailing spouse” because it’s unlikely that he has the right to work in the US yet. It wouldn’t be remotely surprising if he’s feeling a bit rudderless at the moment, although I doubt he’s calling up friends to moan about that.

    • Yoyo says:

He was not working, just volunteering.
Harry spent what can amount to years roughing it Parts of Africa.
He is with his family, and keeping up with his charity work.
Well the Queen is responsible for him dropping one of his charities.

    • VS says:

Volunteering is NOT working……when I see these types of comments, I always wonder where those people were when Meghan uprooted her entire life to marry him. Patriarchy is so strong in some people minds and they don’t even realize it

Harry seems like a great person but compared to him, Meghan is extraordinary!!! he should thank his lucky stars that a woman of that caliber agreed to marry him and as a consequence had to suffer tremendous abuse coupled with jealousy/envy because of it!

      • Janet says:

@yoyo: I didn’t say he was working. What I meant was that he can’t actually work doing anything that needs a work permit/visa. She can work, he can’t.
Also, and I say this from over 26 years of expatting and now country #10, that roughing it in Africa for a few weeks or a couple of months and then going home is not the same thing as uprooting your life, moving away from your friends, family, habits and culture. Psychologically a completely different thing.

It’s easier to deal with when you have a purpose waiting for you in your new country. Not as easy when you are the trailing spouse. There is also a very habitual time line. First 3 months it’s often “woo, new, exciting different!”. And then one day you wake up missing all of the things from home that aren’t in your new place and your mood plummets. By about 6 months, you tend to be back to some sort of equilibrium based on the reality of where you are (and not the expectations of what you thought it would be).

It’s normal and happens to pretty much everybody. Being under lockdown for the 1st portion of that time, the part that is usually “Woo, new place, how exciting! ” can’t be easy. And for Meghan, possibly harder. I’ve been told that reverse culture shock (when you finally move back after years away) is the worst kind. Although maybe during her years in Canada, she spent sufficient time in LA to avoid this.

    • Jaded says:

@Janet, he’s working and certainly has a purpose. He always has and it doesn’t depend on what country he’s in. He’s no doubt having Zoom meetings, planning development strategies, creating advisory groups, etc. etc. as they grow their foundation. The odd bit of volunteering is what many people are doing during this awful time. He is most certainly not a “trailing spouse” and as long as he’s with Meghan and Archie he is at his happiest away from the toxic situation with his family and the tabloids.

I too have resettled in different countries and I can tell you in my experience my mood never plummeted and I relished all new experiences, cultures and people I met, even when I didn’t initially speak the language.

Furthermore he would have been in lockdown in the UK had he and Meghan stayed, only they’d be getting bashed to bits by the racist media and his weasel of a brother. He’s been on the front lines of a horrific war several times, I think he can handle whatever LA throws at him with grace and aplomb.

      • Janet says:

By working Jaded, I mean bringing in an income. Their goal is to become financially independent. Is he entitled to work and earn income in the US? Probably not at this point in time.

Also, congratulations on being the unicorn who has never experienced culture shock, even though you didn’t speak the language. I’ve done the new language thing 5 times. Perhaps you have unicorn tips on how to not become frustrated on the lack of ability to navigate things independently while having the vocabulary of a 2 year old? It’s a gift, I’m sure.

Hopefully for Harry, he too is a unicorn.

      • Jaded says:

@Janet – he does earn an income…he has enough invested to live off the interest so making money isn’t the primary concern, creating a foundation to support his and Meghan’s causes is.

You have your experience, I have mine. Not all of us have your intransigent mindset and we are not unicorns simply because we react more positively than you in similar situations. A word of advice; there’s no need for self-righteous indignation and sarcasm.

      • notasugarhere says:

He’s working on the mental health series with Oprah, for which he’s likely being paid. So however that is being done, he’s earning.

For culture shock? Many studies show it doesn’t hit on average until nine months in.

      • Janet says:

“You have your experience, I have mine. Not all of us have your intransigent mindset and we are not unicorns simply because we react more positively than you in similar situations. A word of advice; there’s no need for self-righteous indignation and sarcasm”

There’s nothing negative about culture shock. And yes, not experiencing it at all DOES make you a unicorn. You do realize that the subject is a whole speciality for the HR departments of companies who regularly field expats? Do you know why? Because it’s a perfectly normal process that they feel the need to support their people through.

Thank you for your advice. Charity starts at home, so perhaps you should take it yourself. Peace out, because it’s evident that you feel the need to “defend” Harry against being a normal human being. Which is ironic, since that’s exactly what he says he wants his life to be.

      • Jaded says:

@Janet – give it a f*cking rest. I KNOW about HR departments advising expats on the different business cultures of many countries. I WORKED in HR for 30 years. Furthermore I didn’t say I NEVER experienced culture shock but I was prepared for it from doing some necessary research on the countries I lived in. Harry is well traveled enough in numerous foreign countries to deal with life in the good old USA. Now please stop arguing with me, it’s utterly pointless.

    • L4frimaire says:

@Janet, The shock of eating good Mexican food and non terrorist avocados. It must be quite the culture shock to listen to NPR, and read the NY Times or LATimes, and not have every other article or topic treating your family like the worse thing to happen since the Blitz or the Napoleanic wars. You’re making a lot of assumptions based on your own projections. We don’t know what they have in the works, and he probably has to get some type of visa to stay there. These aren’t some babes in the woods. These are grown adults, and they need to do what’s best for them. Big eye roll over your useless concern.

      • notasugarhere says:

        Applause for your post L4frimaire.

      • Janet says:

@La4: Perhaps you might want to look up the definition of “culture shock”. Alao, the 4 stages of it, something well noted. It has nothing to do with avocados. Or who your spouse is. Also, at no point did I express concern. Stating that being locked down during what would normally be the “honeymoon stage” can’t be easy isn’t something I should even be having to “defend” because it’s self evident. It sucks for everybody but it would doubly suck if you get to a new place with plans on which you are raring to go, only to find yourself in “park”.

Sorry if that reflection somehow offends you.

      • Jaded says:

@L4frimaire – thanks for your post. Janet clearly has a giant chip on her shoulder today, it appears she’s the one who’s offended by our comments, not vice-versa.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

Agree with your post @L4frimaire. The ‘culture shock’ concern is OTT. Harry is with his family. He speaks English and he’s visited the U.S. a number of times previously. He’s world-traveled, as someone already mentioned. Neither he nor Meghan are babes in the woods. They have status, prestige, access, wealth, dear friends and V.I.P. acquaintances. In fact, there’s probably an overabundance of people who’d like to meet them, along with thousands all over the world who are fans and admirers following everything they do. [Let’s ignore the OTT haters and rabid tabloids for a moment].

The Sussexes have a lot of opportunities and choices now available to them after exiting the mental abuse and restrictions imposed by the royal family. This is still a delicate time for them with the ongoing over-attention, the legal cases, the pandemic, and some of their projects and plans on hold and in the beginning stages.

Under such circumstances, the main important thing to M&H is probably being grounded in what matters: their love for each other, for their son, for Doria and for their closest friends, and for those family members who actually do reciprocate in caring about their safety and well-being. Such family members unbeknowst to us may exist but are likely few in number. Obviously, Meghan counts her closest friends as her family.

As Harry indicated, and as we know Meghan has always fostered, they surely find joy in their everyday moments of just being together with Archie. The tabloids and indeed everyone should leave them alone and allow them a chance to breathe and to pursue their passions without all the excessive public clamour.

    • Lucia says:

Don’t see what is wrong with what Janet said. It’s perfectly reasonable to say the phase of culture shock might be challenging due to the lockdown. She didn’t say he is having a mental breakdown and he’s going to leave his family and run back to the UK, did she? Just a bit of speculation based on her own experiences. I feel like there is this desire to counter this “mental fragility” narrative and people go the other way, denying that Harry can ever have any kind of mental struggles. Which is ridiculous because you can have struggles even if you’re happy and even if you’ve extensively worked on your issues, as Harry seems to have done. It’s normal.

      • notasugarhere says:

Janet is projecting and assuming everyone experiences what she did. Many people do not experience culture shock, so her OTT insistence about Harry appears as trolling.

      • L4frimaire says:

@Lucia,I feel like the post was beyond doubling down and super one sided. There is a lot going on with them, feeling forced to leave their positions and duties in UK, the lawsuits and ongoing issues with that, as well as the pandemic affecting their future plans. But at the same time, to not be constantly chipped away at day to day, where you don’t feel in stress mode constantly and your every gesture and presence scrutinized through this hateful lens must also be a huge relief. To actually plan your next steps and endeavors without worrying about overshadowing anyone must be exciting as well. Even from LA they have done a lot, and it is being noted and appreciated, without the typical tabloid snark dominating. Also, everyone is always so worried about Harry, but Meghan is the one who has borne the brunt of the attacks, slander and constant tear downs. She’s the one getting the death threats and racist attacks online, while everyone is like poor Harry, he must miss wearing his pretty little uniforms.People still act like the last three years will just roll off her back. He may have culture shock, but she has shell shock. The tabloids really destroyed the life and reputation she built for herself before the marriage, and she will never get that back, whether she stays with Harry for the distance or if he ups and leaves next week. He’ll be fine and accepted no matter what he does. Maybe being back in her hometown, with friends and her mom, who had never said anything to anyone, while witnessing some of the dynamics close up, feels like a true shelter right now, especially with the set backs. Same thing with Doria , everyone is like ‘what about Tom Markle, why won’t Meghan call him’, but very few people have asked what is it like for her mom to see her only child attacked by her father, half siblings, in-laws, the national press of the UK, the British establishment, but still expected to be quiet and take it with a smile. No one is saying it’s easy, but to act like this is all about Harry because he has to carve out a civilian future for himself and his family, show what he can bring to the table and step up more, while still young, rich, white and literally entitled. His accent alone will open every door for him. This here is some peak sexist bullshit.

^^ Sure ‘culture shock’ is possible, but I think the fact is that the pandemic is unsettling for everyone at this time. I would think that Harry is struggling more with his family’s betrayals than with any L.A. ‘culture shock.’ Possibly his father and the Queen are still trying to keep open communication, but at the same time I wonder if he has to consider how much he can trust them? Harry knows he can’t trust William and Kate, and that must have been a hard realization for Harry too, coming at the same time that his pregnant wife was being slammed and derided in the British media.

Again, under the circumstances, I do not see ‘culture shock’ being of any major concern for Harry. He shared his country and his heritage with Meghan, and she uprooted with enthusiasm to take on the task of supporting Harry in his role as a member of the British royal family. They both were hopeful and eager to work, and their hopes were dashed by jealousy and abuse. Coming back from that for both of them, while also being new parents is surely more of a task than dealing with ‘culture shock,’ which btw Meghan probably experienced more of in England.

Now that they’re in L.A. where Meghan grew up, she will eventually have an opportunity to share her heritage with Harry, so I doubt ‘culture shock’ is going to be a huge issue. Let’s keep in mind that Harry has spent a lot of time in Africa and countries all over the world. He will have ample opportunity as well to return home to Britain on many occasions. The Sussexes seemed to have a wonderful respite during their time on Vancouver Island, where they will probably return to visit when they can.

      • songbirds_thrive says:

@L4frimaire, thanks also for your second post, which I read after I posted my above comments. I truly appreciate your pointing out what Meghan has gone through. You’re right, she can never get back the reputation she built before her marriage, and I’m sure that’s a big part of what upsets her friends.

I completely agree with you. The main point is that M&H are not like everyone of us. Harry grew up a member of an ancient family, and a dysfunctional one at that, but also ancient, which entails a number of rituals we don’t know about, as well as training in manners and etiquette. He would hardly be someone who experiences much culture shock since he’s so well-traveled. Plus, all of us are dealing with the effects of the beyond normal pandemic.

Harry’s probably more sensitive to the fact that so many people know who he is, and that can be unnerving. He’s human too, but he’s also been trained in how to deal with any number of people-related and culture-related situations.

As you point out so well, the main thing Harry and Meghan are dealing with is probably shell shock induced by family members and by the nasty British tabloids causing them havoc during what should be the happiest and most memorable time of their lives.

If only everyone could just back off and see these two young people for who they truly are, and stop with the obsessing on all sides. Let’s appreciate them for the passionate things they stand for, and let’s support them in their fight to be treated fairly and with due respect by the media.

Attention Richard Kay & Willileaks: Harry doesn’t give af what you say about him. He’s out and he chose his black American wife and their child over your crusty monarchy.

    • grumpy says:

The lady is mixed race which totally normal in the Uk and she’s more white than black.

      • L84Tea says:

        Wait…what??

      • Jaded says:

WTF kind of comment is that? More white than black? Since when does the ratio matter? I’m sure Meghan considers herself just as much black as white and identifies with both. Gad…no wonder you call yourself “grumpy”.

      • Emmitt says:

Well the tabloids certainly didn’t treat her more white than black.

  23. Harla says:

Umm, we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, everyone’s lost something of their focus. Idiot!

  24. yinyang says:

Some more concern-trolling from the Daily Hiel. All this “Harry is a son to me I watched him grow” is so transparent, if you TRULY love your child and they marry and start a family with someone you can’t stand, you hope for the best and let them find some happiness and peace. This is not love it’s bullying even the blind can see that. And why is this man hating on a woman he’s never met it’s just creepy.

  25. truthSF says:

The intense gaslighting against H&M is just further proof that their leaving is hitting the royal family and the RRs a lot harder than they expected. And I think they know that Harry and Meghan will never return, thus the “hit ’em with everything we got” approach to attempt to tarnish their reputation!

    • Lowrider says:

The military appointments is all they have left to beat him.

      • notasugarhere says:

They cannot remove any of his earned ranks, only the ‘for show’ ones the Queen hands out to all royals whether they have military experience or not. No great loss.

  26. Lizzie says:

Following days of ‘Kate has matured!’, ‘The Queen is happy with Cambridges’s work’ and so forth.
Apparently the palace is accurately reading the feeling of the country that the Cambridges are seen as nice folks who are dim and don’t do much, while Sussex are seen as immensely popular and get things done with out the need to create fan-fare themselves.

So the last two years of this tactic has backfired on the palace. Maybe someone should replace their advisors.

    • Brit says:

The BM and Royal Family know Harry and Meghan are superstars and gave that country the most positive PR and business it’s seen in years. The Cambridge’s don’t appeal to the youth or minorities and all the others are boring. They want them back badly and it’s dripping out of every article.

      • Islandgirl says:

The articles being written don’t seem to me like they want Harry back. They know that Harry and Meghan are not going back so maybe they intend to rip their reputation to shreds as well as shape a particular narrative for their readers.
Unless they believe that Harry is a glutton for punishment ….why would he return to the situation that he left. They continue to write ridiculous articles which demonize Meghan and make Harry look pathetic.

Actually I am a little bewildered by what their strategy is and what their end goal is.

  27. bub244 says:

I’m sure his time in the army was his happiest and most stable time – until he met Meghan.

    • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ Right, I recall that Harry even voiced this during the prank phone call that he was unawares was a prank. He spoke about the royal family not understanding the ‘normal’ life he got a chance to lead during his ten years as a member of the U.K. armed forces. The army is what helped to rescue Harry from his grief. It gave him a new sense of identity and purpose, as did the time he spent building Sentebale in Botswana with his friend, Prince Seeiso.

  28. Lowrider says:

It’s interesting to me that the media and brf can only entice Harry to return by dangling his military appointments. That is their one and only trump card.

Expect to read a lot more articles on Harry missing the military… but not his granny, dad or brother…

  29. Feeshalori says:

To paraphrase the title of the article, it’s unsettling to see the media so vengeful and unhinged over a couple they supposedly don’t care about anymore. There, l fixed it!

  30. L84Tea says:

This has William’s rose petal stained hands all over it.

  31. ABritGuest says:

The BBC repeated episode of DIY show where a house was made for an army vet struggling with PSTD& Harry& William make an appearance& help out. Harry was very affable with the other volunteers& fun to watch and on Twitter some were saying it was a reminder of what Britain has lost (whilst blaming Meghan of course).

Could see why some media are pressed- Harry is closest to having Diana’s appeal with people. And someone like Sophie isn’t going to make up the interest generated by Meghan’s entry into the family& it’s a long time until the Cambridge children get interesting gossip wise.

Camilla Tominey said the Sussexes are keeping royal reporters busy despite stepping back so they will stay fixated- must get more clicks from them.

  32. paddingtonjr says:

This RR shtick is getting tiresome. The RR and BRF chase the Sussexes out and then claim they “left”. Also, Harry has been out of the army for many years, long before Meghan came on the scene, because he wasn’t able to be on the ground as he wanted. Also, he was pressured into being a “working royal” as *cough* someone(s) were not pulling weight, despite being “keen” to do so.

If anything, Harry has seemed more focused since he married Meghan: he just wants to be a good husband and father while doing work that is important to him. If those goals could have been accomplished while remaining a senior member of the BRF, he would have stayed, but that became impossible. So, the Sussexes went to LA to live, at least part-time, where Meghan grew up and where they felt they could do the most good for themselves and their careers. And as far as Harry walking behind Meghan? He seems confident and secure enough to follow Meghan when they are doing something she is more familiar with (such as the Hub launch, delivering food in LA), but she follows him at events he is more familiar with (various BRF and Invictus events). At many events, they stand side-by-side. In other words, they are like most other couples: a true partnership sharing their common and divergent interests.

  33. Brit says:

They know Harry and Meghan aren’t returning and can’t read the room for shit. Attacking the man’s wife constantly and practically erasing their growing family is gross. Right now they are going through the stages of grief because they have seen what they are left with and know Meghan and Harry don’t need the family or RR/Tabloids. Once this supposed year review comes up and they still don’t come back, I imagine the anger will get even more palpable because these people seem deranged. I firmly believe 1000% that Harry and Meghan and their children will rarely go to the UK, if at all.

  34. Awkward symphony says:

God this was the most sexist s%*t I’ve ever read!😡 I hope the Sussexs take action on these “experts” next and also make an example out of those writing fake “friend of the Sussexs” stories

  35. Busyann says:

Im starting to wonder someone is trying to course correct a bit. It’s obvious that all of those smears to get Meghan to leave, obviously led to Harry leaving too, but it’s equally obvious that they only wanted Meghan to leave. Now I’m starting to wonder if they’re hoping to smear Harry into coming back and leaving Meghan for good.

    • Brit says:

Which is stupid because none of it is working. Bashing his wife and basically acting like Archie is nonexistent is only showing him how little they respect this man. The BM are ass backwards and it shows. If anything, they’re only proving his point that leaving was the right course of action. I doubt Harry cares about himself when it comes to these people but cares about his family with Meghan . I don’t understand why they don’t get this.

    • ABritGuest says:

I’m starting to think initial horrible press was to halt the relationship& when that didn’t work some were hoping subsequent bad press would lead to quick divorce. I don’t think they bargained on her getting pregnant so quickly& definitely not on Harry leaving with her. It couldn’t be clearer that they want him back- alone.

Seems some tea is being spilt on Palace staff attitude to Meghan which suggests she never stood a chance. hopefully will be covered by Celebitchy over next few days

  36. lanne says:

If Harry goes back to his family, it would be like an abused wife returning to her abuser. The royal family has nothing to offer him but more of the same.. Dancing on his brothers puppet strings for the rest of his life. At the mercy of the royal rota. His children subject to scorn and abuse, especially if they “darken up.” The BM are playing as dirty as an abusive husband, but without the tears and “please come back to me, I’ve changed!” I suppose that will be the next tack they take.

Think we’ll see any Cambridge trips to, say, Africa or the Caribbean anytime soon? Soon as in the next five years?

    • Emmitt says:

I think Archie is about as dark as he’s going to get; he might get a smidge tanner (especially in the summer) but that’s about it.

Any future children could be a lot browner than Archie or even Meghan. You just never know with genetics. If that were the case, the British Media would go even wilder with the racist attacks against the Sussex children. For that reason, it’s best the Sussex children be raised in North America. USA isn’t perfect but they’re likely not going to have the press attacking the children for being mixed race.

I think the real reason the attacks super ramped up on Meghan is because she committed the ultimate offense: She permanently embedded someone of African descent into the British Royal Family bloodline (even though that’s been done before). That’s why the attacks ramped up during her pregnancy: they needed her to miscarry so any Archie (or subsequent children) would never be born.

      • Islandgirl says:

Have to disagree here. At the time I told my husband that I was convinced they were trying to get her to have a miscarriage.

        I totally believe that!

  37. SilentStar says:

Ugh, when reading that article snippet, I couldn’t help thinking about how sad it is that someone sat down and put valuable time from their life into writing it!

  38. yinyang says:

The only time I’ve seen Harry unsettled and unfocused was the week and a half in London he had to stay behind to close shop after his resignition, he looked in a hurry to get back to his new little family in Canada. I’ve seen the signs and that is a man in love.

  39. Em says:

How many more these ridiculous opinion pieces are they going to write? They’re not coming back permanently it’s time these royal reporters dealt with it .

    • songbirds_thrive says:

^^ Exactly @Em. The more they lie in these dreadful tabloid dregs, the more people can see clearly the nasty, deceptive tactics that are going on. People who have good sense and decent, forward-thinking minds are not fooled.

  40. Marivic says:

PHarry and Meghan’s appeal is global. Whether the RF and the British media like it or not, PHarry and Meghan are international news. Now the British press is touting that in lieu of H&M, the RF is strongly represented by the new Fab 6: PCharles, Camilla, William, Kate, Sophie, and Edward. Yes, the Wooden 6. Individually or combined, they cannot generate the same global appeal and coverage as the Sussexes.

  41. songbirds_thrive says:

Wowsa, these rabid, rotten RRs really can’t stop. And apparently neither can Willileaks/ Cain!

This piece reeks of leaky falsehoods, outright lies, and willful suppositions and betrayals toward the popular spare. How on earth do any of these fools think this tripe is going to make Harry come back?!

Britain is NOT pining for Prince Harry’s return. Anyone with a sound mind understands that Harry is taking care of his family and his own life. And they can also see how much Harry cares about people who are struggling and who need a helping hand. Harry has not abandoned his fellow countrymen, nor has he abandoned his patronages that need his help. Nor has he abandoned his military compadres. All of these commoners know Harry is solidly with them and that he will continue supporting and backing them up, no matter where he is living in the world.

It’s the royal firm that’s no longer relevant! And it’s the left-behind senior royals who are blatantly copying everything M&H are doing and standing for, in order to try and catch up with modernity, and in order to try and deceive die-hard royalists and gullible fools. The palace gray men and Willileaks are also trying to block M&H from succeeding outside the firm. That effort is a non-starter! It’s only making regular people see more clearly the worthlessness of the firm, and the co-dependent pandering of the worst rabid, rotten royal reporters and filthy, despicable tabloids.

    • panda says:

      commoners?

      • songbirds_thrive says:

Sorry, that’s just one of those unnecessary labeling terms that are in the language for no good reason other than to divide. Britain is such a class-based society. No harm meant by me. I should have said, ‘human beings, ‘individuals, or ‘real people.’

  42. Ellie says:

I have no doubt that Harry’s time in the military and subsequent work on behalf of veterans was one of the great sources of meaning in his life. And I’m sure the loss of many of his formal ties to the military when he gave up his senior royal status was extremely painful. I also think he finds tremendous joy and purpose in being a husband and father. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if he feels a bit floundering right now, without their new foundation up and running yet, carving out an identity defined *primarily* by his role as husband and father without the clear goals and structure of his prior life.

I believe all of this is probably true. But the Daily Mail has taken this complex story about a man making real sacrifices for his family and turned it into “poor dumb Harry, always getting railroaded by his overbearing wife.” It’s so incredibly offensive.
