Lea Michele “acts like she’s better than” the rest of the ‘Glee’ cast

From what little I know of Lea Michele, I think she’s likely a rude, obnoxious little diva. I get that she has a great voice and maybe enough acting chops to get her to Broadway and television stardom on Glee, and I also get that maybe she’s new to the national fame game, and doesn’t always say the right things, and yes, there’s a learning curve. I accept all that. But what I find interesting – and very telling – is that as soon as she started getting bad press for pulling the diva act, Glee creator Ryan Murphy took to the press to defend his diva as if she was Maria Callas or something. Now Us Weekly is running a rather rude/funny piece about how everyone who works on Glee sort of hates her. Not really, but Us Weekly does use the word “diva” in the headline, although no one quoted uses that word.

Art imitates life for Glee star Lea Michele. A source tells Us Weekly the actress (who plays uptight show standout Rachel Berry), 23, is a diva on the set of the Fox show, which airs its season finale Tuesday night.

“Lea acts like she’s better than the rest of the cast,” says the insider. “But the thing is, she legitimately is.”

Another set source says, “She’s sweet, but she has her moments.”

Apt to boss around makeup artists and other crew members, “She has very clear ideas about what she wants to do and how she wants to look. I think she’s just Type-A, like her character”

A second pal points out that Lea has “always wanted to be a star,” and, in a classic Hollywood move, “she has become super-strict about her diet. She is a vegan now and says she hasn’t eaten cheese in a year!”‘

Michele — who admitted on The Oprah Winfrey Show she’s more like her character than any of her co-stars — even “sings along to her own songs on the radio.”

At a May 24 cast dinner at Chicago’s Sunda, she was the only star who refused to sign autographs for fans. After it was reported she snapped at photographer Patrick McMullan for asking her name at the Time 100 party, she Twittered that it was a “silly joke.”

Still, the cast has bonded working 14-hour days.

“We’ve become so close, Dianna Agron, 24, who plays pregnant cheerleader Quinn Fabray, tells Us. “We’re like a family.”

[From Us Weekly]

See, I set you up for a really mean article, but it’s not really. Most unnamed sources are like, “Yeah, she’s kind of bitch, but whatever.” So, is Lea terrible or terribly talented? Or both? I can’t decide. CB theorized that so many people are ready to dislike her because she has kind of a smug, bitchy face. CB also theorized that people associate her with type-A personality character, and dislike her for that reason. It sounds like that really is who she is, though. She’s type-A, she’s a bit high-strung, she’s a little smug. But if she has the talent to back up her attitude, maybe people will keep giving her breaks.

I’ve tried to like Glee but now I will make sure I avoid it. Jlo and Mariah are divas too and look where their careers have gone lately.

  2. Rachel says:

I think Lea is amazingly talented. I don’t personally buy that her castmates don’t like her, they always seem very close in interviews and pictures. As for a diva attitude on set, well given the hours that the cast works, I’m sure they all have their moments from time to time.

  3. Dominique says:

I’m surprised she is the age she is. That’s all I’m going to say.

  4. Canucklehead says:

    She sure wears scary lipstick.

  5. LindyLou says:

I tried to watch this show last night and I really don’t get why it’s so popular. Maybe the tweens like it? I just find it lame.

  6. bite me says:

    love this bitch

  7. Frank says:

I am taking this from the article….

“She is sweet but she has her moments.”

Sounds like just about everyone I know.

She has become a target, sure she may have her diva moments but that doesn’t make her this horrible, horrible person they are trying to make her out to be.

It isn’t something to try to ruin a person over.

  8. Marjalane says:

Meh. I thought Glee was cute when it first came out and then they just overdid it. I do love me some Jane Lynche though.

  9. vi says:

i’d say most broadway stars are type a. it takes that commitment and confidence to be successful. i don’t think there’s any evidence that she’s a bitch though. maybe she is or isn’t but i think people just want to believe it because of her character and her talent. the press always try to take down celebrities at their peak.

  10. Pinklette says:

According to the imdb page for Glee she basically got the part because she was Rachel during the audition. The pianist skipped part of the song she was singing and she made him restart it because it was messed up. Most auditioners would have just kept going.

That being said, I still adore her and the show. Rachel and Kurt are my favorites.

  11. lucy2 says:

The show is far from perfect, but I do enjoy it. Lea is really talented, she has an amazing voice. At this point, I think it’s probably people associating her with her character, and the press looking to pick on someone – if she continues to “have her moments”, makes all kinds of crazy demands, and is rude to fans or something, then ther’es a problem, but right now, I think it’s probably a bit overblown.

  12. serena says:

I don’t like her at all, and I don’t think she has it all to be the lead.

  13. Lizzard says:

Pinklette: I watched a clip on hulu of her audition and it was pretty funny to see how “rachel Berry” it really was. She was singing On My Own and the pianist skipped a part and she looked over and asked him to repeat it, and everyone in the room started laughing and she was getting annoyed and aggravated at them laughing at her but kept going. She said in the interview part, she didn’t realize they were laughing because she had just pulled a rachel…

  14. Iggles says:

Ugh. Will they lay off the Lea criticism. Tabloids love to bash people when they get successful. I don’t think Lea deserves it.

  15. CC says:

It’s all rumors at this point. She’s never explicitly said or done anything to make people hate her, other than that TIME 100 incident, which turned out to be a huge misunderstanding. So until she makes some wildly inappropriate comment or gets arrested, let’s leave her alone, yes?

  16. snowball says:

There’s something very Kristen Chenoweth-y about her that makes me just look at her and think, “get your ass to Broadway and stay there.”

  17. Lucinda says:

I love how confidence, talent and drive in a woman becomes bitchy and diva. Bet you won’t here this about any of the guys. @@

  18. Alarmjaguar says:

Oh, Glee is totally fun. Over the top, yes, but completely enjoyable.

  19. she’s a bitch for sure. she seems really stuck up now she’s getting ahead of herself just like justin beaver lol
Seriously i tried watching 1 episode of glee and couldnt because of her screeching. cant stand her, can she just overdose on cheese and go on celebrity rehab or something? k bye.

  20. guilty pleasures says:

Love this show, and most of the characters (the ones I don’t love I am neutral on, like the two bitchy ‘Cheerios;).
It is smart, funny, showcases huge talents, develops relationships, and has Jane Lynch!!!! All good!
If she’s a dive, so be it. Leave her alone, she got where she is by demanding the best of herself.

  21. denise says:

Say what you want about this girl, but she can sing.

  22. jane16 says:

Glee is my guilty pleasure, I must admit, and I think this girl is amazingly talented, love her voice. However, I do have a cousin who works on Glee & he says the stories are true, that she is a diva & can be quite bitchy.

  23. Kim says:

Yes she is super talented but so is pretty much everyone else on the show. If she left the show she could be replaced by another good singer whereas many of the other characters i dont think could be easily replaced (Gay kid, blonde dumb cheerio – who is personally my favorite). The one thing she cant do is dance whereas other girls on the show can sing and dance.

I think her future lies in Broadway because she isnt a stellar actress so its not like she will be getting movie roles.

  24. Kimberly says:

nothing in the article was new.

All was said when the cast was on Oprah.

stupid story and a month too late.

  25. Jeri says:

I like the show and she is great in it. Some episodes are better then others but that’s true with everything.
She can really sing & could equal and/or surpass pretty much anyone’s vocals.

  26. Scarlet Vixen says:

I take all the “She’s a snotty bitch” stories with a bucket of salt. I’ve seen her interviewed on the red carpet twice, and she was very sweet and modest. As to the Time100 story, if a reporter shows up to report on an event, he should do his job and know who the honorees are. She was an honoree, so he should’ve known who she was. I would’ve given the guy shit and teased him for not doing his job well, too.

A little tidbit–Jonathon Groff, the actor who plays Jesse St James–was her co-star in ‘Spring Awakenings’ on Broadway and recommended her for the role of Rachel on Glee. If she’s such a snotty bitch to her co-stars why would want of them recommend her for a great job and then work with her again? Oh, and she worked with Jenna Ushkowitz on ‘Spring Awakenings’, too.

I have two cousins who spent their careers on Broadway, and that was always my dream, too. But Broadway’s musical theatre is so competitive and cut-throat. Definitely for the strong-willed and ambitious. I realized pretty early on that I didn’t have the guts for it. So, if she has a type-A personality and is a strong woman, more power to her! That doesn’t always make someone a bitch, ya know…

  27. Carrie says:

Apparently it is a difficult show to film- the young cast (all the kids) signed onto three year contracts (until 2012) which paid peanuts- the US weekly article says that Iqbal Theba, who plays Principal Figgins, actually earns more for the season than the kids do.

They work 14 hour days, the work is physically exhausting, and none of them are earning the salaries that they should for a hit show. So yeah, she probably does “have her moments.”

  28. ChinaCat says:

Save Jane Lynch (of course) and Matt Morrison, she actually is MUCH better than the other “kids,” JUST DON’T ACT LIKE YOU ARE HONEY!

  29. CB Rawks says:

I love their cover of that Journey song, except for HER voice. She hits it all too hard and shrieky and loud.

  30. Hi there, simply became alert to your blog thru Google, and located that it’s really informative. I?m gonna watch out for brussels. I will appreciate when you proceed this in future. Many people will be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!

  31. Tyler says:

Yeah she is a complete bitch… Even to the people she used to be friends with before she got to “stardom”… 🙁
