Last night was the Tony Awards, one of the biggest parties of New York, a celebration of Broadway and singing and dancing and acting. This year, Sean Hayes was the host, and by all accounts, he did a wonderful job. Sean opened the show with a little appearance from his friend Kristin Chenoweth, who defended him against Newsweek’s homophobic critic. They responded the only way they could – by making out in front of the packed audience. Sean looks like a good kisser!
I have to admit, I didn’t watch it, not because I really have anything against the theatre, it’s just that I don’t think the Tonys are a particularly exciting awards show. However, the Tonys went Hollywood this year, and several big “names” won awards. Denzel Washington took home best actor in a non-musical, and his Fences costar Viola Davis (Oscar nominated for Doubt) took home Best Actress. Also receiving awards: Scarlett Johansson for best featured performance (it’s like a supporting actress award), and Catherine Zeta-Jones for her work in musical A Little Night Music. I liked Scarlett Johansson’s dress and styling a lot. For once, Scar didn’t get anything wrong. Great dress, great fit, great makeup and decent hair. Does she give off the faint whiff of “corpsey”? Sure. But she doesn’t look deathly, so that’s an improvement.
Katie Holmes was a presenter… with Daniel Radcliffe. Is Daniel really, really short or is Katie just that tall? Probably both. The dress is meh. The color is okay, I guess, but it washes her out, and it doesn’t look long enough. Like it’s a dress meant for Suri. Daniel looks adorable, though.
I love Viola Davis, seen here with Denzel. I’ve loved her for many years, ever since that show she did with Sam Waterston. So I’ve followed her career, and can I just say something? She has the right idea with her style, she really does. She likes to look a bit sexy on the red carpet, and her makeup and hair usually look awesome. But she consistently has fabric issues with her dresses/gowns. This acid yellow-green is hideous, and it’s only because I like Viola that I think it looks okay.
Okay, seriously, how much work has Catherine Zeta-Jones had? She’s so beautiful, but looking through all of these photos of her… she looks like a 50-something woman who recently had an extreme facelift. Oh, I think the dress is Versace. It’s really pretty.
F-ck me, how much do I love Cate Blanchett? On anyone else, this suit would be a disaster. On Cate, it’s AMAZING.
Jada…girl, stop. This sh-t ain’t good. Why are you even there? And why are wearing that sh-t?

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Is it just me, or has Antonio gone in for a little work too? He looks very young and refreshed. Although I suspect anyone would look young and fresh standing next to Melanie. No offense to Melanie, who I actually like. But yikes.
Ugh, I do not care for Naomi Watts’ dress at all. It may be high-fashion and all, but that color on a fair-skinned blonde makes it seem like Liev Schreiber is standing next to an statue of oatmeal. Liev looks cute, though. A bit squinty.
Angela Lansbury! She got some kind of lifetime achievement something or other. She looks so f-cking good. I love when older gals wear red. My verdict: Angela is best dressed at the Tonys.
My God, will you look at Helen Mirren’s body? It’s insane how amazing she looks. I even like the simple dress, with what I can only imagine is a sprig of mistletoe on her boob.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Queen. Aretha!!!! That’s it. We have to end it on Aretha. All you other bitches can just go home.

Zeta Jones’ eye makeup is a radical departure from her usual, adding to the strange look of her face. The bangs as well. She looks beautiful, but not herself. Not good Catherine!

Angela and Helen take the cake, in my opinion.
Cate Blanchett looks like she is wearing a suit from the color-forms set (now I am aging myself!) But her outfit looks like a cartoon. I don’t know how else to describe it.

I watched a bit of this last night, including Angela Lansbury receiving an Honourary something or rather. Interesting speech, in that she talked about being a WWII refugee on Broadway. Sadly, her dress doesn’t move well – the cowl swings in an unfortunate way, and until I realized that, I thought that she wasn’t wearing a bra. But the colour is great!

Michael Douglas and his stony stare is getting old. Looks like he is sharing the botox needle with CZJ, but at least she isn’t inflating her lips. Her makeup and hair are so unflattering. She was so absolutely beautiful as recently as that cooking movie she stared in!

I’d just like the point out that the bodice on Katie’s dress was unbelievably tight. She has a wonderful body and that dress gave her back fat and side cleavage. Horrible dress.

Don’t know why they paired Dan Radcliffe and Holmes together. They looked odd. Katie’s dress had a horrible fit and her hair looked half done like she’d run out of time.
Loved Mirren and Landsbury’s looks… not so sure on Cate’s shiny number and I love her but I’m a bit over her plunging necklines.
You had a question mark for Ricky Martin… he’s been on Broadway before in Les Mis and will be appearing in Evita (they said “soon to appear” I thought that meant sometime this year, no, on Broadway that means Fall 2012). He’s bona fide theatre person unlike Jada Pinky Smith. Why the hell was she there? Ugh.
Sean Hayes (and KC) were great! Chris Noth or his direction was totally cocked up. The sheer unbridled joy shown by the Memphis cast, writers, producers et al at winning best musical was uplifting. But a little too much of everything overall.

Um, CZJ is a beautiful woman, but on top of some kind of surgery, she has smoker’s mouth….ie, after years of smoking, the skin around her mouth tightens in a weird way from smoking….she should quit now and the muscles might relax a little.
Douglas looks like a corpose/ghost standing next to her. he should darken his hair a little.

Katie looks like a giant mess. Bad hair, ill fitting gown, plus she and Daniel look fairly ridiculous together.
Why does Jada’s face always look so tight and painful? Overall, not a pretty look.
I like CJZ’s gown, but…wow. It looks like someone glued her eyelashes to her head. She was so pretty, what is she doing to herself? She looks so much older recently (I do think she’s older than she claims), but still looks like a spring chicken next to Michael, yikes.

There’s nothing “ok” about Katie Holmes look. Her dress is terrible-shape and color, makeup doesnt match her skin tone, crappy posture, and HER HAIR. Was she so exhausted from detoxing she couldnt be bothered to at least slick it into a pony tail? It looks like she was in a sauna mere minutes before hitting the stage. What happened to her cuteness? Remember her Posh Beckham stage w/ cute bobs and designer wear? WTH happened?

CZJ? Ouch! Not a pretty sight last evening made worse by her performance. Off-key, poorly phrased, inappropriate gestures and mugging for the song. Yes, I with absolutely no musical talent, could have trumped her singing.
Unlike most here, I thought CB’s shiny suit made her look emaciated and deformed–her shoulders looked welded to her arms. Moreover, she’s starved herself enough and needs a meal. Totally, not pretty.
Tony Awards far more entertaining than the Academy Awards. The former dishes up real entertainment and, overall, better acceptance speeches.
The best for last, I agree with the majority that Sean Hayes did a fabulous job last night. I think he’s gonna have to fight off the straight women cuz for my money, he’s hot!! And oh so talented. I was blown away by his opening musical number. Who’d have thunk he could tickle those keys like a pro pianist!
