Janet Jackson is the new face of Blackglama mink, PETA attacks her

janet

Here is the new print ad for Blackglama, the brand that is “all mink, all the time” (my tagline). In previous ad campaigns, Blackglama has hired Sophia Loren, Diana Ross, Lauren Bacall and Linda Evangelista for their campaigns, called “The Legend” campaign. Janet Jackson is the newest “Legend” and while I think she deserves the title, it’s off-putting seeing Janet front for mink. Blackglama’s press release claims: “Janet is an icon in the world of music and entertainment, a true legend. She represents everything that this storied campaign embodies. Janet is to entertainment what Blackglama is to luxury.” The ad is going wide in the September issues of Vanity Fair, Vogue, W, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and Women’s Wear Daily worldwide. And as you can imagine, PETA is pissed:

Animal activists have taken aim at Janet Jackson for signing on as the new face of fur firm BlackGlama.

The pop superstar was announced as the brand’s new ‘What Becomes a Legend Most?’ spokes model on Thursday and she’ll model high-quality mink items in the ads – and PETA bosses have been quick to react.

Spokeswoman Amanda Schinke says, “It’s amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn’t think that Janet was this desperate.”

“Surely she knows enough about suffering and unjustified death to recognize that both occur in the production of a fur coat. We are asking her to think again and to donate these stolen skins to be used as bedding for animals orphaned by other human-caused disasters, such as loss of habitat.”

[From Starpulse]

Um, “downslide”? Really, PETA? You can’t just make the statement about animal rights, you have to disrespect Janet’s career? Note to PETA: this is why people dislike you. At this point, PETA should just stick with the cold hard facts of how mink coats are made, the details are disturbing enough without personally attacking someone’s career and calling Miss Janet “desperate”. UGH.

    Booo! Ms. Jackson, Boooo!

    Fur is for petting.

  2. Sarah says:

I am against fur, I’ll just say that upfront. However, I’m also not a fan of PETA. They kill more animals every year than they save. Anyhow, having said that, Janet looks beautiful in that ad.

  3. bellaluna says:

I believe minks are actually SKINNED ALIVE for their coats. Disgusting!

Let’s leave fur where it belongs – on the animals who grew it!

  4. aenflex says:

Nasty is right. I wish everyone looked at life the way I do, a lot more things would be alive. Look tho, Michael was a perv and peter-pan syndrome sufferer, but still talented. Talent and morale are not mutally exclusive. PETA doesn’t know how to handle thier rage. But at the same time Janet is Nasty for this.

  5. Cheyenne says:

PETA can KMA. Janet, you look slammin’ in that fur.

  6. djork says:

Blackglama + Tyler Perry = Desperation.

  7. denise says:

    LOL@ pic # 2

  8. denise says:

    @ Cheyenne

You know who looks more slamming in that fur???

    The mink

  9. Kaboom says:

PETA is so annoying, they make me want to buy fur.

  10. oh hey says:

I’m surprised PETA hasn’t hasn’t used the “how dare she wear a fur coat when her late brother, the King of Pop loved animals” card.

aenflex: go read “The Michael Jackson Conspiracy” before touching your keyboard ever again.

  11. Jules says:

Desperate for revelence. Janet can’t sing, has floppy breasts, she had to do something to pay for the plastic surgery.

  12. BReedy says:

Her picture is amazing. Lena Horne was a Lengend also. Fur isn’t a crime. It is a personal choice. That being said, I would not buy fur now ( I am 59) but I have 2 Blackgama coats I purchased in the early 80’s that I like to wear without fearing someone will attack me for it. PETA needs to ease up and grandfather in the old coats hanging in the closet. That is one reason fur is so popular: not only is it warm but a fine coat will last a lifetime if properly cared for.

  13. jc126 says:

Hate fur, hate PETA, have a strong dislike for Janet Jackson, who can’t sing live.

  14. Sumodo1 says:

Let’s not forget, Lena Horne was the most famous of The Blackglama women, and Janet is transitioning into that upper demographic. They may have given her a tremendous pitch.

BTW, furriers haven’t been able to get rid of black minks for years. Mine is the new trendy color, Blue Iris, a gray. Whiskey is also a hot color, followed by mahogany.

  15. denise says:

If anyone thinks that wearing fur is okay. They should watch the film, The Earthlings. It will change your perspective on it, and may turn you into a vegetarian. The film details our relationship(humans) with animals, and how we abuse our dominion over them. It’s very sad, and not for the faint of heart.

  16. malachais says:

I agree with PETA this time, she seems a bit desperate for doing this type of ad. PETA reminds me of most gossip blogs, which criticize celebrities with commentary…which is what makes people want to read. I does discredit them in some ways, especially since they are standing up for animal rights.. I don’t know much about PETA’s credibility, but they are dissing Janet to get attention.

  17. ams511 says:

    i’m with you jc126!

  18. jones says:

How upsetting…she should know better. I bet Michael Jackson would disapprove. He was a big-time animal lover.

It’s not cool to kill animals for their fur. It just isn’t.

  19. amanda says:

OMG that coat is gorgeous! Janet looks beautiful too. 🙂

  20. Kelley says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!

  21. TheSongWriter says:

Please….ya’ll are acting like Janet killed the mink herself. Its an ad and there are things FAR MORE IMPORTANT going on in the world other than Janet Jackson wearing mink in an ad. Seems to me ya’ll are the “desperate” ones looking for something to bitch about. So in that case Janet MUST be relevent because ya’ll sure are worried about what she’s doing. And Mike shouldn’t even be brought up..thats just low. Keep doing YOU Janet…Much love and respect.

  22. searching4grace says:

    @Jules,
If you want to attach her morals, okay. Fur is a huge issue. But attacking her body, and body image? That’s crazy. janet jackson is a beautiful woman no matter her size. Do i want to see her in fur? No. But i’m not going to attack her body to prove a point.

  23. meme says:

@denise – thank you very much. as for janet, she better stop with the plastic surgery before she becomes MJ

  24. denise says:

    @ Songwriter

    Use the word y’all much?

  25. Blu_planet says:

There may be “bigger” issues in this world but you have to begin somewhere if you are going to make the world a more positive place.

  26. Iggles says:

Um, “downslide”? Really, PETA? You can’t just make the statement about animal rights, you have to disrespect Janet’s career? Note to PETA: this is why people dislike you.

    Kaiser, you rock 😉

Indeed that sums up what’s off-putting about PETA to a lot of people. The pretentiousness they spew does not help their cause.

  27. andrea says:

“surely she knows enough about suffering and unjustified death”? wow, really? exploiting her freaking brother’s death? PETA has zero credibility thanks to their tactics.

JJ looks great, as usual. can’t see why the fashion folks don’t just stick to fake fur.

  28. TheSongWriter says:

@ denise Out of everything I said that’s what you want to comment on?….Like I said YA’LL are “desperate” for SOMETHING to bitch about..even down to my word choice..@ blu I agree but by these comments here its obvious we need 2 start with the ppl that live in this world…seems they are in far more danger than any animal could ever be…

  29. denise says:

    @ Songwriter

Yes there are many more important things going on in the world, but the topic at hand was fur. And Ms. Janet may not have killed the minks herself, but by simply wearing them she is promoting their death for the sake of fashion.
Just because an animal is not a human being does’nt diminish their value. Animals are continuously being destroyed for our benefit. It hardly seems fair.
This planet does’nt solely belong to humans.

  30. ford says:

i am so anti fur but PETA is just doing so much damage to this campaign. They are ridiculous, what kind of statement is that to issue??? I agree stick with the facts, they say enough on their own!! PETA should realise they are creating more damage than help, grow up.

  31. Jeri says:

Another Botox fan, in the 2nd picture (she looks like she is crying) her forehead & eyebrows do not move at all.

  32. kellsbells says:

The fact that PETA would throw such a low blow makes me want to go out and buy a black mink coat right now as a big FU to PETA – and I’m not a big fan of fur.

  33. endpolasmic ridiculum says:

Skin her. She’s horribly low brow. The world is overpopulated, her existence is a waste of resources.

Luckily PETA supporters have loooong memories and this will be her second mega PR disaster.

    Nipple slip anyone?

It’s not as though she wrote her own songs – totally coasted on family connections to get material from good songwriters. Can you actually PICTURE this broad sitting at a mixing desk mixing something as complex as Rhythm nation
    Or Control?

    Ya I didn’t think so.

  34. TheSongWriter says:

@ denise I understand what you’re saying and I agree animals are important but i’m just saying that ppl should be willing to help eachother just as much as they are willing to help animals..and many ppl are not. Why talk about this woman’s career, the way she looks, and her dead brother? How will that bring that mink back? Janet has been through so much these last years..and she has always done positive things but that never gets noticed. All I’m saying is let’s not bring eachother down for the sake of getting your point across..we’ll never get anywhere..

  35. denise says:

    @ songwriter

I did’nt personally attack Janet or Michael on this thread.
I do agree, we as humans have got to do better, not only for our species but for all species.

  36. Marianne says:

I dont like fur either but Peta is such a joke. Can’t they go away already?

  37. TheSongWriter says:

@ denise yeah I know I was talking about the others who did. It was nice talking to u though. Hope u have a nice day.

  38. denise says:

    @ Songwriter
Nice conversing with you too, and have a lovely day & weekend.

  39. Milan says:

PETA has taken its fuckery to Africa. The other day as I was visiting a friend in Kenya, we came across a woman in the city centre wearing a dress made of spinach leaves holding a placard stating that peeps should give up meat and go vegan. This was met with guffaws and plain sniggering, In africa, you don’t get a choice…food is food is food. And you eat whatever’s put infront of you.

It didn’t help that a stray goat (despite furtive kicks from the model) couldn’t seem to resist this vision in leaves and kept nipping away at her dress….hilarious. I’m sure she was thinking, ‘I’m trying to help you mangy old beast…leave me alone!

  40. wowwowwow says:

I just watched the trailer for the earthlings – I am so upset. They showed what I think was a mink looking pitifully up toward the camera after having been skinned. It was the most terrible thing I’ve ever seen. Forget being mad at PETA, don’t any of you DARE buy a fur just because of that. These poor animals that we terrorize for such vanity. Ugh I’m going to be sick…

  41. wowwowwow says:

Also I have to say that I’m not a huge PETA fan either, however I think their goal is to get attention because they are trying to save animals from what humans do to them by the millions on a daily basis. I guess it takes great lengths to get people’s attention sometimes. It’s a worthy cause and should be noted that a lot of those people have dedicated their lives to it. How many people can say they’re so passionate about their jobs? I’m a graphic designer and can only admire that so many people are out there fighting for these creatures that can’t defend themselves against us.

  42. wtf says:

I don’t wear fur. I don’t wear alligator skin either, but I’m not gonna talk trash about someone because they do.
I guess I just don’t understand the difference between eating meat and wearing fur…

  43. denise says:

    @ wowwow
I told you it was not for the faint of heart. I honestly could not finish watching it. It pained me to see what these animals go through. The thought of inflicting that type of pain on any living thing, is just heartbreaking.

And I absolutely agree with your second post. Well said.

  44. San says:

I eat meat so I’m not going to cry for a mink. I wouldn’t buy real fur cause wearing it is just eerie to me. Pam Anderson auctioned off her lambo lined with real leather and gave the money to PETA. It’s only okay if it benefits them. They need to start focusing on consumers and educating them. Janet has had hit after hit. sale after sale. She wants to focus on other things so be it. That’s acting now. She is a living legend.

  45. Ron says:

No matter how much anyone bitches about it, people are not going to stop wearing fur. Focus on making it as humane as possible instead. My sister is a vegan and is constantly going on about how good it is etc etc and it just makes me want to eat a big ole juicy steak everytime she starts. If it works for Janet, more power to her and she does look great regardless.

  46. Hum says:

Before I judge, Let me go check all of my clothes, household products and Most of all the food I eat and see do they contain ANY animal products..brb…

    Okay..I have nothing to say…

  47. grace says:

I just hate 2 typical comments people make here every time Peta is involved:

    1. “I hate Peta, they make me want to kill animals.” If you feel like so, that means you are cold and cruel.

    2. “they kill more animals than they save”. All organizations put animals for adoption, but some people don’t even consider adopting them, they buy animals. What to do with all animals there for adoption? How many millions will they have if they decide to keep all of them? Seriously.

I support all kind of organizations that protect animals: ASPCA, Defenders of wildlife, mercy for animals, and so on. I don’t approve of everything Peta does, but I appreciate that someone is doing something. And as wowoww has said, sometimes one needs to do extreme things to get attention to a cause.

I don’t believe most people who hate Peta are involved with any other organization. Stop blaming Peta for your indifference, just assume you don’t care.

  48. citysuede says:

FYI people – leather products are made from leather that is a “by-product”. Which means that the animals were killed for food. People eat meat and have been since the beginning of time. If you don’t agree, vote with your dollars and don’t buy it or eat it.

Also, not very nice to laugh at a pic that seems to be of Janet grieving.

  49. denise says:

    @ Citysuede

She’s not really grieving, she’s role playing, it’s for her new movie. lol.

  50. bellaluna says:

@ citysuede – Our family has a fabulous solution to the leather/meat concern: my husband eats red meat and I wear the leather. No fuss, no muss!

  51. tom says:

    people
    eating
    tasty
    animals

  52. Erin says:

Anyone who defends fur is ridiculous. It’s disgusting. Not only that, but people who wear it look like cavemen, with an IQ to match.

  53. Allie says:

You know, I always thought the Jackson family were huge animal lovers. I’m really surprised Janet would be endorsing fur. I wonder what Michael would say about this.

  54. Amneh says:

I think she looks exceedingly beautiful, and PETA annoyed me so much I actually feel like going out and buying fur.

  55. joe says:

Well that does it. I just erased that stupid woman from my ipod. I no longer will support Janet. Fur is evil. She is a selfish and terrible person to support such a cruel industry. There is NOTHING glamourous about cruelty and suffering of animals.

    Janet sucks.

  56. Crash2GO2 says:

I’ve tried to contribute to these threads in the past only to have my posts yanked by CB who appears to get very offended by the possability that fur animals are not, in fact, skinned alive. And that AR organizations have been proven to stage horrific animal deaths (so called ‘snuff films’) to promote their dogma.

Let’s see how long this says up. Or how long I’ll be moderated for this time or if maybe I’ll finally get banned.

  57. anon says:

@Crash2GO2 I have read your posts on this subject in the past and it makes sense to me, what you have written. I never believed that they would be skinned alive. I don’t have fur BTW. I just don’t see how it could be done if the animal is alive.

  58. birdgherl says:

Her career has been on the downslide for quite a while so PeTA isn’t saying anything that’s not true.

  59. LBees says:

    You know what Celebitchy?!

    She is fucking desperate.

Fur isn’t cool, and Janet should not endorse the killing of defenseless animals.

I really get sick of how this site vilifies PETA, when it is one of the BEST organizations in the world in terms of bringing awareness to the plight of animals.

We get you don’t care about animals, we get it. But just STFU about how “people don’t like PETA” because of their “radical views.”

Yes, not wanting to hurt a person or animal is radical. It’s radical for most of the world— but it’s still RIGHT.

  60. crtb says:

    Live and let live.

  61. GatsbyGal says:

PETA is to the animal rights movement what the Westboro Baptist Church is to christianity.

  62. Kelly says:

I believe anyone who promotes new fur should expect all the personal attacks they deserve, because what they are doing is depraved and needs to be called out. No one held a gun to her head and made her flog fur like a pathetic desperado. What makes it doubly revolting is the fact that I seriously doubt she needs the money that badly. So it’s not even an act of desperation, just greed! Shudder!

And if Janet Jackson’s career isn’t on the slide, or rather nonexistent, then I must be missing all that amazing new work she’s issued lately. Rolls eyes!

  63. Ron says:

it’s funny all the animal lovers on here who seem to human hating.

  64. Iggles says:

To me, there’s not a big difference between eating meat and wearing fur. If you watched “Food Inc” then you know how inhumane the US food industry is to livestock.

I think it’s ridiculous to condemn Janet for wearing fur while not condemning everyone who eat chooses to hamburgers (unless the meat is from Organic, free range farms).

  65. GatsbyGal says:

People who cite MOVIES as reasons why people shouldn’t eat meat only succeed in making themselves look foolish.

  66. Confuzzle says:

Michael wore leather. I think Janet looks fabulous in that photo. Won’t make me buy or wear fur but each to their own choice.

Now excuse me whilst I finish my delicious steak…..mmmm tasty meat.

  67. mike says:

I have been a life long superfan of Janet and have supported her through thick and thin and have let some of her questionable decisions pass, but being the international spokesperson for a fur company disgusts me….I am shocked and extremely saddened….very confused. I honestly do not think I can support her moving forward…..really bad PR move in this day and age.

  68. Shay says:

I don’t really care much for the Jackson family. To me, with the exception of Michael Jackson, who was the only child with the talent, the remainder were all hangers-on and opportunists. Does Janet really need the money to promote fur? Not really.
Whenever I see rich African American music stars wear fur now, I just think of that illiterate moron Kanye West, and his idiot girlfriend. They ‘overkill’ the fur to make their point that they’re wealthy and really, so effing what?
No wonder Michael Jackson lived like a recluse and had surgeries, he didn’t want to look like his father, he’d had enough of his siblings mooching off him or trying to be like him (like Janet).

  69. Sara says:

I think fur is ugly so I don’t wear it.

However, minks getting skinned alive? OMG NOOOOO!!! Because the animal kingdom is so humane! Being eaten alive by a wolf or starving to death is totally a better way to die.

I really don’t get why people are so upset. Don’t you know how many cute, fluffy bunny rabbits a mink will brutally murder in it’s lifetime? Save the bunnies 🙂 Team Bunny!

  70. GatsbyGal says:

    Hahaha Sara, I like you.

  71. Gail says:

(yaaaawwwwwnnnn) Hate peta, don’t give a rat’s ass what Janet (Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty!) wears. Love her, bored to tears by coats.

    Does this post count?

  72. gen says:

I hate her and her ugly nose…she’s looking faker & more plastic every year.

  73. ana says:

you human?? beings are disgusting !!!!
no wonder there are wars and people
hATE !!! Chinese for their ongoing
    oppression of tibetans….
i’m not peta !!! i’m your next door
    neighbor !!! watch out !!!!!!!
you wear fur?? you’ll suffer the
same peel your skin off…alive !!!!
    i’ll WEAR YOU !!!!!

  74. Gail says:

@ana: LOLOL Flawless! Your impression of a douchebag peta freak was spot on! You captured that shrieking desperate insanity perfectly! OMG thanks for the laugh!

  75. AC says:

@Sara Too Right! Minks are Savage, I caught two trying to rip a goose to BITS the other day, then when I was fending them off they tried to go for me!

Skinning alive is nasty though, but I don’t see how you could even do that to a conscious mink without it going for your face, Hannibal Lector style.

  76. rosie says:

Dear Janet, I know this is hard for some of you but there should be a line drawn for things you will do for money. No humane or animal suffering for a buck. We as a people must evolve and try to treat every living thing with respect and dignity and if it is o.k. because it is your “culture” then you should be the slave of some crazy white person because that might be their culture.

  77. Rob says:

Humans are the ONLY animals that kill for pleasure and/or sport. Skinning alive an animal for the pleasure of having its fur is simply barbaric, and the people who purchase and promote the industry are the ones to blame for the existance of the industry. Janet Jackson is one of these people.

  78. ProNature (John G) says:

    Are fur wearer ugly people?

Something I had in my mind for many, many years.
Why do certain people wear fur?
    Are they ugly?
Are they jealous because animals are more beautiful than them?
Are they trying to find a way to hide their ugliness?

Actually when you wear dead skin you’re uglier. Just because you’re ugly it doesn’t give you the right to end a life / slaughter another species for fashion.
Some people are very beautiful and some are very ugly. Fur wearers for example are very ugly people who cannot confront their appearance and rather wear dead skin to hide their filthy self and ugliness from the world behind dead skin / furs.
In my opinion it makes them uglier, animal fur and human doesn’t combine at all. Animal have their skin for 2 reasons. Beauty and warmth. Humans are hairless because we’re suppose to live where is hot or cool or making clothing without slaughtering countless live.
We live in modern society which means we have to be civil and respect other creatures. If you kill something for sport is not respecting is disrespecting it, hating it. If you kill someone is because you hate him/her, or self defense when he/she tried to hurt you and or your families.

I have saw many trappers pictures and they look like hicks, most of them are “out of shape” ugly, unattractive and or overweight/obese. Sport hunters are more fit than trappers but most of them are simply ugly people.

Wearing the skin of someone or other creature is a sign of hatred toward it and also is
jealousy because you’re an ugly individual who wants to end another life for profit and fashion but still wearing skin doesn’t make you look nicer, it makes you look uglier.

Jealousy cause killing of other for taking their place or their skin.
If someone wears human skin for example they will be considered a sicko.
Even if someone wears the skin of Osama Bin Laden which he is the world’s most evil person they will still considered a sicko.

But why is not the same from wearing the skin from another species?
Skin is skin, they bleed and feel pain too plus they even die like us.

The answer is greed and anthropocentrism.
No skins should be worn accept by its owner.

  79. lisa says:

Peta are right janet is glamouring fur to ignorant indivials how can’t be bothered to even look into how the fur is made. In china millions of cats and dogs are being beaten(clubbed) and then skinned alive to provide the fashion industry with fur because people want to look like celebrities. janet promoting fur is wrong wrong wrong. Just because she didn’t kill the mimk herself does not make it better!

  80. Jo says:

@ endpolasmic ridiculum: you are just as bad as someone who wears fur. I can’t believe that you would suggest killing a human being, then turn around and say it’s not right to kill animals for fur. Wow stop contradicting yourself.
@ anyone with any negative comment, get a life and stop worrying about what other people are doing. It is sad that you all had to bring Micheal into this, I believe that he would have supported his Dunk regardless of her decision. It is also sad that you all down played her body. Janet you look fabulous keep up the great work.

  81. Jo says:

@ Denise, that is wrong that you would say she is not grieving. Regardless of what ads she choose to do Micheal is still her brother and she truly hurting. You Suck for that and yet again all of you that have brought Micheal into this is wrong and next time you should think before posting. How would you feel if a sibling of yours died and someone said that you were truly grieving you are just acting.
People are so quick to bring someone else down to make their point or make their self feel better. Y’all act like human haters, well guess what you are human so I guess you hate yourself. I am a huge Janet fan and I support her regardless why you may ask because I am a true fan, she is a great actress and singer, and she does a lot of positive work. So what she has on fur in the blackglama pics did you all miss what it said, she is a legend. Ugh people w3ill do anything to bring someone else down.

  82. thomascampbell says:

    fur,,,smur…. peta lick my feeta…

people are straving all over the world…children are dying sll over the world from disease and at the hands of other human beings…war rages on in the name of freedom…women are being killed by domestic violence…money is being stolen as we speak…no jobs to be found,,,and janet wearing fur is the issue of the day???
