Balthazar Getty on his Sienna Miller affair: “I loved & missed my family too much”

For more than a year throughout the summer of 2008 and past the summer of 2009, Balthazar Getty was engaged in a very public affair with Sienna Miller. To this day, neither Balthy or Sienna has really explained their actions publicly. It wasn’t like they were hiding either – there were topless vacations for the benefit of the paparazzi, there were holidays spent with the mistress rather than his wife and four children, and there was Sienna Miller’s attempt at making herself the victim in the situation (“I was really naïve and trusting she told Vogue, before going on yet another topless vacation with the still-married Getty). Throughout it all, Balthy’s wife Rosetta refused to file for divorce – and some believe (like me) that Rosetta kept her eye on the Getty fortune, and the rumors that Rosetta and her kids would get less money if there was a divorce rather than an eventual reconciliation.

Well, in the end, Sienna left Balthy for a various string of hookups and a reconciliation with Jude Law, and Balthy went crawling back to Rosetta. So Rosetta was smart right? She waited it out, kept her eye on the money, raised their kids, and eventually Balthy came back and now all is well? Sure. In the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Balthy is interviewed for some reason, and he tries to explain what happened:

Balthazar Getty tells Harper’s Bazaar how his marriage survived a fling with Sienna Miller. Getty was photographed in 2008 kissing a topless Miller on vacation.

“Here’s the bottom line: It was a very challenging time for everybody involved,” says Balthazar, 35, in the October issue. “But I loved and missed my family too much not to make it work. [Wife] Rosetta is understanding enough and spiritual enough to let us try.”

[From Page Six]

“Understanding and spiritual enough to let us try”? What in the open marriage hell is that? Don’t get me wrong, I kind of understand this argument in retrospect – Rosetta could have been “There won’t be a divorce, but you can have your whore.” And Balthy was all “Thank you!” But I don’t really think that’s the way it played out in real time, you know? Mainly because Rosetta and her Hollywood friends made sure they did real, substantial damage to Sienna Miller’s career (it still hasn’t recovered), and Balthy f-cked himself out of a decent role in television, and probably some other stuff too. I think Rosetta was actually pissed off, and it wasn’t an issue of “letting us try.” It was a matter of “When that whore dumps him and he comes crawling back, he’s going to have to pay for a LONG TIME.”

He is a total dick head.

  2. Sasha says:

Good to remember this and don’t forget thinking how nice and naive is Sienna…. yes right!

  3. Tuatara says:

Lord, what an idiot. There is so much more to comment on, but I can hardly muster the enthusiasm to dump on such a tool. All I will say is that he has really beady eyes.

  4. Gwen says:

He’s obviously a slimeball but I also think he fell of the wagon and that was part of the affair. It might be easier for Rosetta to take him back and try again if she sees this as mostly a relapse into his addiction and the affair as a result of that.

  5. dorothy says:

Total scum. His wifes an idiot as well for taking him back. It had to have been humiliating.

  6. Istanem says:

    YOYO99 – ditto

  7. malachais says:

They must have had an open marriage or something, I can’t imagine going through something like that. This woman has no dignity if she only stayed with him because of his family fortune.

  8. nunny says:

Thinking about Mrs RG and their kids when her husband and their father photographed with naked sienna miller in Italy, it’s so sad and bad days for them. However I feel glad to them to get back their father. Kids needs their parents really.

  9. Raven says:

I’m not necessarily buying the money angle. She may love the guy and know him well enough to realize that he would eventually be back. Patricia Neal and Gary Cooper carried on for a few years and he couldn’t leave his wife. Eventually Neal moved on and Cooper returned to his wife. Time marched on and the family adjusted. Same case here, except faster.

One other thing–Mrs. Getty has a very triumphant look on her face in that photo.

  10. Lisa Turtle says:

Of everyone in this situation I actually think Sienna looks the best. Rosetta looks money-hungry and rather pathetic for staying with a blatantly cheating spouse. Balthazar made the choice to be away from his family. I’m sure he told Sienna it was an open marriage, or they were separated. Sienna just didn’t check herself after it was clear that Balthy wasn’t getting divorce. I really don’t think Rosetta ‘won’ – If I was her daughter I would be ashamed of her and furious at Balthazar.

  11. Kitten says:

He reminds me of Charlie Sheen in both appearance AND attitude.
I know everyone hates Sienna and thinks she’s a homewrecker but I still like her. I’m really interested in seeing her do more work because she was starting to hit a nice stride with her acting.

  12. He had the affair two years ago, when he was 33 years old, married with four kids and recovering from addiction and trying to cope with the Hollywood world. I am not condoning any behaviour, but that sounds like a lot to handle to me. If his wife was money grubbing she would have nailed him for a huge settlement. These two are trying to work it out because they love each other and their children, why is that so hard to believe? It is not uncommon in life for people to get back together after working on their relationship and their addictions. Good for them for trying to do the right thing for their family.

  13. Lisa Turtle says:

It’s called self-respect. In my opinion, Rosetta should get some.

@ Kitten… I think Sienna is gorgeous, and a formidable actress too, although she really gets too much negative publicity to achieve her full potential career-wise. She did great word in Edge of Love & Alfie. Just my opinion.

  14. Kitten says:

@Lisa Turtle-Never saw Edge of Love but I will definitely check it out. Thought she was great in Interview and yeah, she is gorgeous. And I totally agree with you-it seems like she never learned to master the idea of public image and her career would really benefit from some positive PR.

  15. BethL says:

What do you mean that Rosetta and her friends destroyed Sienna’s career? She didn’t have much of one to began with and the way she was flanting the relationship didn’t do her any favors with her image. Sienna hurt her career on her own. I could never take Bart back. I didn’t like the way he carried on with Sienna. It looked like he was deliberately rubbing it in his wife’s face. I’m pretty sure he said that there was no affair, that he was seperated from his wife for months.

  16. Bodhi says:

Formidable actress? Really? She is window dressing at best. If she really were that good, her acting career wouldn’t have ground to halt

  17. Lady Jane says:

I like his wife’s shiny hair. That is as deep as I am getting today.

  18. Maddie says:

I guess Rosetta wanted keep her family together instead of throwing it all away, she has her kids to consider.

She is also showing them the grace of forgiveness. I truly do not believe that there is any money angle involved since Cali is a 50/50 state she would be entitled to half of what he made during their marriage, and I sure grandpop would leave something for the kiddies any way.

I also think that if he pulls another a** hatterly thing like this she would kick his butt to the curb.

As for Sienna career really what wife in their right mind would want their actor/hubby to work with the tramp with no boundaries add to the fact that she’s an average actress to boot.

  19. k says:

I have read several times from different sources that Balthy isn’t inheriting the Getty fortune. Also, it’s very clear from her own “talent” and extracurricular activities that Miller did herself in career-wise. Please give us proof that his wife conspired with Hollywood elite against Miller.

I also see you misinterpreted his quote about his wife.”Rosetta is understanding enough and spiritual enough to let us try.” = she is trying to reconcile for the good of the family, not that she participated an open marriage. She was obviously just lying low during the media storm.

  20. tfb says:

I think hollywood is a very political place. Actors achieve success by playing the game, and PR is a big part of that game. You have to kiss ass until you are powerful enough to have your ass kissed. Flaunting a relationship with a married man (who has a well-connected wife) seems like a poor choice in the game of Hollywood.

I thought Sienna had a pretty good career, some commercial success with GI Joe, and some artistic success with many lesser known pictures such as Interview which I loved. However, it’s no shock to me that she had less acting opportunities when she was with Getty. I think Sienna is one of the more talented pretty young things in Hollywood (weren’t her parents acting coaches?)- I love Sienna’s style choices too. I hope she pulls her PR together and gets a grip on her out of control party girl image.

  21. Team Bethenny says:

Yoyo99, I was just about to post that very same comment. You beat me to it.

  22. Kitten says:

@ Bodhi-Miller currently has several movies she’s working on, including Hippie Hippie Shake with Cillian Murphy (excited about this one). True she did GI Joe (totally forgot about this-did anyone see that crap?) but I think she’s capable of being REALLY good. Factory Girl and Interview showed that she has the potential, I just think the terrible PR is hurting her ability to get roles. Anyway, she is gross for messing with a married man, I just think she’s talented 🙂

  23. Johnny'sGirl says:

I also think she was laying low and wanted her husband back. I would also make him pay for a lonnnnnng time..

  24. mslewis says:

I have read several times from different sources that Balthy isn’t inheriting the Getty fortune.
    —————————————-
Correct. There is no Getty fortune for anybody to get. The Getty Museum has it all. Balty’s daddy pissed away the little he did inherit on drugs, booze, etc. The only Getty with any money is the one in San Francisco and he made most of his money himself. Also, Loretta has a little money of her own and she is well connected in Hollywood so, maybe Balty begged her to take him back because he’s the one who needed her in order to repair his damaged career.

I think Loretta is a good mother who wants her family to stay together. It’s hard to raise four children alone. She is not the idiot here.

  25. Iggles says:

Sienna Miller is a brainless twit. Don’t like her, never will!

Her bf Jude Law is garbage. Balthazar is garbage.

You know what they say, birds of a feather flock together!

  26. Stronzilla says:

He only comes out and says this now that Sienna is happily reunited with Jude Law? Sour grapes for table 5.

  27. danielle says:

I like how Getty makes it sound like it was his decision to go back to his family. I’ll bet Sienna dumped him.

  28. Bodhi says:

@ Kitten – Hasn’t hippie hippie shake been in production forever? I’m rather looking forward to it myself, but I thought it would be out a while ago (but what do I know?) I haven’t seen interview, but I didn’t like Factory Girl at all (even with my beloved Guy…). I don’t know if it was the actors or the subject matter, but I just did not dig it. Maybe with the right director she could do something really memorable, but I don’t know… I just don’t think she is very memorable

  29. Sounds more like a case of Sienna’s Wandering Vagina to me!

  30. Mouse says:

    Ugh, they look related.

  31. Renee says:

I can’t get past his ‘crazy homeless guy’ eyebrows.

  32. Chris says:

Getty hasn’t been in anything good since The Lost Highway. Someone should actually make a movie about the Getty family, that’d be a good watch.

  33. archiepelago says:

Let’s not forget, they are all just people and people make mistakes. Their’s just happen to be very public and forever searchable online. I actually worked with Sienna and she is adorable. She is a very sweet and down to earth person and an incredibly talented actress – I think her career is back on the upswing. I try to take people how I find them – not what I read about them (and no, I’m not her PR person).

  34. Alicia says:

Omg that Rosetta’s chin looks like American dad

  35. emmarose says:

i shouldn’t say this but he did marry her when he was pretty young (early 20’s?) and never sowed his oats. i think he was tempted by the ho-bag that is miller and gave in but never loved the blonde tart and went back to his stable family. it was a temporary affair out of curiosity and he went back. i don’t really hold it against him. it’s not like he married at age 35. most men do cheat (no really women! they do!). but they still want to go back to their stable families and they know it. they’re just curious.
