Robert Downey Jr: “Not having done drugs for literally five or six years is a lifetime”

Robert Downey Jr. is the November Playboy interview, and Us Weekly has some excerpts. Have you ever sat down and read one of RDJ’s interviews? Like, one of his longer ones, for Rolling Stone or one of those men’s magazines? He’s an interesting interview subject, but… there’s a lot of crap there too. He’s always remarkably candid about his f-cked up past with drugs and addiction, but his mind… I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s like he’s the most brilliant burnout f-ck up you’ll ever meet. His conversation is like reading a thesaurus will tripping on acid. So while RDJ sounds lucid and sound byte-y in these excerpts, just know that these portions are probably heavily culled from enormous monologues of crap.

Robert Downey Jr. is sober these days, but he says he will never forget his ugly struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.

“Not having done drugs for literally five or six years is a lifetime,” he says in a candid interview in the November issue of Playboy. “I think of myself as someone who has no desire, use for or conscious memory of that life. And yet I don’t shut the door on it, and I don’t pretend it didn’t happen.”

He says he still has “very strong” recollections of his former self, whom he describes as a “messed-up kid … lost, lost in narcotics.”

Even today, Downey, 45, tells Playboy he feels like “a veteran of a war that is difficult to discuss with people who haven’t been there.”

And he doesn’t take his sobriety for granted.

“Looking back, I think, ‘Oh my God, I could have been done. I could have been so fried and so bad off and, oh my God, such a cautionary tale,'” he says. “And I still could be.”

An integral part to staying clean: “You take responsibility, whether you’re outraged by the results or not….” he says. People who think “‘I’m a victim; I’m being victimized!” are “out of line.”

Downey, who has a son, Indio, 17, and has been wed to producer Susan Levin for five years, also relies on self-discipline, which he says is “about respect. It’s not even about self-respect; it’s about respect for life and all it offers.”

On the heels on Iron Man 2, Downey returns to the big screen next month in Due Date, a comedy by the director of The Hangover, which is already generating buzz.

“My age and my recent set of experiences … have left me feeling I’m in the zone,” says the actor. “This is just the sweet spot of my career and my life so far, and strangely, they’ve come at the same time.”

[From Us Weekly]

He is in a sweet spot right now – he’s one of the most in-demand actors out there, a place in Hollywood that I feel is very deserved. He wears his success well, and I buy that he’s a good place right now, emotionally, spiritually and physically (he’s in great shape!). But I still worry about him sometimes. I worry that his brilliant, f-cked up mind has some kind of design flaw and he’ll back into some bad sh-t. Maybe it won’t happen – after all, I think RDJ is more aware of the consequences than the people around him. That being said, I really, really want RDJ and Susan to have a baby – I think if he was around a baby 24-7, it might have a calming effect on him, for real.

Can someone show this to the Lohans?

  2. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I worry about him slipping back into the bad sh*t too. All the time. I remember a E True Hollywood story about him or something like that, and him telling the judge he had a gun in his mouth and he liked the taste of the gun metal.

I just focus on the future because I know he can keep on the right path. I pray for it. I know a good majority of people in Hollywood snort something. I just want him to stay well. I love him, and I really fell in love with him when I Restoration. Such a good movie and he was amazing in it. Anyway Due Date looks hilarious and I cant wait to see it.

  3. Carrie says:

Being around a baby 24/7 has some positives but is the opposite of calming.

  4. Diane says:

I’ve loved him forever, can’t wait for Due Date.

  5. Ursaline says:

    *Sigh* Love the red sunglasses!

He’s got this Generation X awesomeness that’s really tough to describe. I get it when he says that it’s hard to relate unless you’ve been through the insanity. I’m just a little younger than he is, and it was painful to see how low he went. Now that he’s in the “sweet spot”, he’s just enjoying the ride and trying to not take anything for granted. I’m very happy for him.

    co-sign that one.

  7. Kitten says:

I ADORE him. Such an incredible talent. I hope he can continue to battle his demons….

  8. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

I have always said, that he is so hot-when I can understand him. He is so brillantly smart that sometimes in his more long winded interviews, he loses me.

Having said that, I get him, I really do about his past. I dont think he will roll back downhill. I think when you truly hit that point of no return, you hit it. He has.

About having a baby? Naw, I think RDJ needs full attention. If she has a baby, that may ruin it all.

    Anywho, he is HOT.

  9. GatsbyGal says:

He is lookin’ damn good for a 46 year old who used to be a cokehead. RDJ, you are Mr. Inspiration. <3

  10. Delta Juliet says:

The naughty things I would do to that man….

    Well said

  12. Roxanne75 says:

I remember seeing and hearing about his rough spots…he’s lucky to be alive…glad he’s still kickin.

  13. Someone Else says:

Can we clone him? Seriously, all HW stars need to take a clue from this guy. It’s refreshing to have a star that actually shows some class!

  14. BrandyMc says:

He is so hot! I love this man! Yummy!

  15. devilgirl says:

    Love him.

  16. Julie says:

Before people give him credit for “taking responsibility” for his past fuck-ups, they need to remember that it took him literally a decade to reach that point. A decade where he fucked up his loved ones (SJP) and nearly killed himself and many other people. He also had people in his corner who actually wanted to help him, but he rebuffed them. It took him a loooooooong time to get that “class” you speak of.

  17. Leticia says:

A little known fact about RDJ is that he is a Republican. He doesn’t seem like he would be, but politically he is a conservative.

  18. Dorothy#1 says:

@Carrie I was thinking the same thing!!!!

  19. maggiegrace says:

I have to say, I don’t care about his politics, or that he left a lot in his wake. I’m crazy in lust with him and have been for a couple decades. He just keeps getting hotter and hotter. I jus tthought of that Elton John video he did when he first got our of prison and sober. I couldn’t believe how gorgeous he was in thata.

  20. Alexa says:

And his experience of sobriety is NOT your typical one. Many people’s lives get much WORSE when they sober up and have to deal with all the mess. He’s gotten off pretty easy . . . to say the least.

  21. Linda says:

Oh, he just looks so, so, so good though! Look at him in that tux! Drool.

  22. lu says:

    He is just pure awesome.
I don’t he’ll fall into drugs again, by what he says in his interviews, he has learned his lesson.

  23. sharylmj says:

I’m so happy for him that he has his life in control! Such a HUGELY talented person. Continued success for RDJ personally and professionally.. can’t wait for “Due Date” it looks hilarious!!

PS.. I agree that he needs ALL the attention from his wife.. baby would not be good..

  24. TQB says:

@Alexa, I agree – if every addict could clean up and immediately become outrageously successful, recovery would be easier. When he became an addict, he was getting good roles but was in no way respected the way he is now. it was much easier to throw all that away back then.

  25. mauweebound says:

republican huh? well I guess he can’t be perfect

  26. Bodhi says:

Republican? Hmm… I guess I can still love him! 😀

I can’t wait to read the full interview!

  27. GrnMtGirls says:

    Hot!!

  28. lola says:

he must be put on HGF

  29. Will says:

Hell, not doing drugs for a few MONTHS is a lifetime. I’ve abstained from smoking pot for nearly three months and I’m counting the hours till I go see my brother this weekend and get high again for the first time since mid-July.

    Never again…

  30. fritanga says:

While I love him and respect his enormous talent (which shined through years of self-abuse and was strong enough to lift him out of addiction), I am also doubtful about his brain chemistry. He’s a steadfast Mel Gibson apologist, which gives me pause (although it makes sense; Gibson was one of the few people who hired him when RDJ was in the abyss), and the Republican thing is weird (but probably a natural reaction to his counter-culture upbringing). I dunno; I just hope he doesn’t backslide, and yeah, I hope someday he gives another performance as incredible as the one in Restoration.

  31. Yvonne says:

I think he is at a good place to become a dad again. He is a different person now and just wants to experience that (having a baby) with the love of his life. I don’t think they would be talking about it if it wasn’t something he thought he couldn’t handle.

  32. JM says:

I have adored this man since Weird Science. He is older and wiser and I doubt he’ll succomb to temptation again. Yes, it took him a long time to get clean and sober but he did it and good for him! He has so much talent, it couldn’t even be stifled when he was high (Less Than Zero for sure and I think Chaplain?) He also has taken responsibility for everything he’s done but I think prison is the thing that really woke him up.

Whether he has a baby or not, I wish him continued happiness and success. Maybe he should pay LiLo a vist.

  33. The Bobster says:

Republican? I’m surprised he can find work in libtarded Hollywood.

  34. red says:

I don’t know. Some of his words sound over-confident and 5-6 years is a tricky time for addicts – the ego (addiction) reasserts itself typically around year 5 or 6. I’m wondering, too, if he can maintain.

And, yes, he’s an amazing, hot actor as well.

  35. Jeri says:

The idea of a baby is great but the reality might be too much.

I wish him continued success in his war with drugs for himself and all those who love him.

  36. connie says:

@red – EXACTLY what I thought. I’m also a little worried about the “self-discipline” statement.

I’m not relaxed yet. And I agree with Kaiser that reading full interviews with this guy is kind of a trip down the rabbit hole. He’s brilliant, but he may be a little perma-fried. Which is great. Just gives him more character. 🙂

  37. KJ says:

I LOVE RDJ. I love his story, I love that he turned it around, I love that he’s taken accountability for his actions and it’s very clear that he works hard to stay on the straight and narrow. And anyone in their right mind would be concerned about a possible relapse. Look at Robin Williams. He had been clean for a very, very long time when he started drinking again, and consequently cleaned up again. Being an addict and recovering from it doesn’t mean he’s good forever. Addiction is a disease, much like many other mental and physical conditions, that one lives with for life – any recovered addict will tell you that. It took him a very long time to really be clean, sober and in a good place – which tells me that his demons are much deeper that most of us who haven’t dealt with addiction can imagine. I really applaud him for his recovery, and respect him so much as an actor. He really is a joy to watch – as a talent, and as a sexy, salt-and-pepper hair object of my lust. I just adore him.

  38. di butler says:

He’s right, though. If you’ve never been addicted to drugs, you can’t possibly understand what it’s like. 5-6 yrs feels like 3 lifetimes. Love him, hope he holds it together.

  39. Kate says:

Oh God, I just love his fine ass!

I hope he stays clean and happy.

  40. Ruffian9 says:

    Leticia: So?

  41. Sumodo1 says:

Susan Downey doesn’t need a baby. She has to mother RDJ 24/7. Mm-kay?

  42. Anti-icon says:

Breaking down because of drugs, or because of a terrible betrayal, or because of serious mental dis-ease, or due to a child in the family dying needlessly, is all the same, even though it’s a deeply personal journey. Losing your mind is in a certain way, finding all of oneself. The sad, dark and lonely places that you can’t even discuss with loved ones is where a person also finds healing. But it is slow. And while a person is “broken down” a lot of damage is done.

I think RDJ is a stunning example of what the human spirit is capable of—recovery and forgiveness and health.

  43. Camille says:

Love him and I wish him nothing but the best.

Iron Man 2 was a yawn fest though.

  44. Chris says:

Why the surprise about Bob being Republican? He’s a multimillionaire, of course the Republican’s policies are in his best interest. I actually admire him for admitting it. I can’t stand the hypocrisy of Hollywood multimillionaires getting on their humanitarian high horses and wanting to be patted on the back for it.

  45. Jazz says:

He has never said he’s Republican. He said in an interview that part of his martial arts philosophy is to not take up causes. Love this man, and I’m so glad he’s doing well.
    Co sign with Delta Juliet!

  46. original kate says:

hot, hot and a side of hot.
