David Beckham gave an interview to the Los Angeles Times a few days ago, and the LAT totally buried the lead, and now the British tabloids are freaking the f-ck out. In an extensive piece covering the journey of the LA Galaxy in general, and Beckham’s place on the team specifically, the reporter asks Beckham if he really enjoys being in America. Beckham says he’d “like to make California his family’s home even when his playing days are over” and “Our boys go to school here. They’re happy here. As long as they continue to be happy here, my wife’s happy here, then we plan on staying.” Then the reported asks if he’d ever consider becoming an American citizen, since he enjoys being in America so much, and Beckham says: “I hope so, one day. It would be nice. I’m English born and bred. And that’s the way I’ll always be. I’m an Englishman, you know.” So he “hopes” to become an American citizen, but he will always identify himself as an Englishman.

Question to the Americans: Would you mind David Beckham as an American citizen? I wouldn’t. But I’m a sucker for naturalization stories and people making the conscious choice to “become American.” It stirs my sense of patriotism. Also – I think Beckham is being honest. I think he really enjoys how (mostly) low-key he and his family get to be here, and he likes that his kids get to go to school and be normal and that the whole family isn’t under the microscope of the British dailies. Now, does Victoria feel the same way? For some reason, I doubt it. I bet she wishes they were back in England, where she is much more famous.

Also – in the LAT piece, Becks also complains a lot about his injuries sustained on the field, but he’s optimistic: “I find it hard to sit still and do nothing … but at the end of the day I need to rest my legs. Waking up in the morning, it still takes me a while to get the leg going and it’s still pretty painful. There’s always a satisfaction when you prove people wrong. I’ve been able to do that over the years. Yeah it was great winning FA Cups, Champions League, playing in World Cups, winning [Spanish] La Liga. But now I’m playing in a MLS team and the MLS Cup is the biggest thing in soccer in this country. So it’s an exciting prospect.” Good for him!

He is a beautiful man. Le sigh…

  2. mln says:

Oh yeah totally in favor of his citizenship, hotness is always welcome in the USA.

  3. Happymom says:

British tabloids are brutal. I’m guessing they both like being here. Why wouldn’t they love their lives in LA? The weather is great, they have $$$$ and can be around other famous people.

  4. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Mmmmm Oh David…I could care less if he became an American citizen. As long as he remains the sexy British man I have fallen in love with. Baby I just wanna Bend it like Beckham…:D OMG would love to see him play while he is on the L.A Galaxy, maybe when they play Chi-town again I will.

  5. Diane says:

Sure, David honey, come on over.

  6. Green is Good says:

Ha ha ha! Anybody else notice the guy in the background of the 6th thumbnail checking out Becks’ bum?

Who can blame him? It’s hypnotic.

  7. Your mama says:

Victoria always says in interviews that she loves LA for the weather and that people are warmer. She seems to prefer it to rainy England.

  8. Sarah says:

I actually read an interview with Victoria and she echoed the same, that she was amazingly happy with the normal life they had living here and she loved it. Good for them.

And yes please, someone who looks like him is always welcome on our shores 🙂

  9. Janine says:

What’s the big deal? Can’t he have dual citizenship? It’s not like he’s slagging off the UK.

You’re right, they probably have much more freedon in the US, so I can’t say I blame them.

  10. Dee Vine says:

US has double taxation rules unlike the UK. If I was that rich, I would think twice!

  11. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Welcome to AMERICA.. now take off your pants.

  12. Arianna says:

@ Johnny Depp’s Girl hahahaahahahahhahahahaahah!! agreed.

come be a canadian citizen mmm

  13. CandyKay says:

I’ll bet the Beckhams pays taxes in some other place entirely. If they don’t have a monster of a tax shelter, they’ve got the wrong advisers.

It reminds me a little bit of the Robbie Williams story. He was such a big star everywhere else in the world that the only place he could live peacefully was in the U.S., where he is entirely obscure.

  14. ziggy says:

    he looks like he stinks..seriously.

  15. Taurus says:

I love Posh & Becks! Such a cute family:-)

    MJ FOR HGF!

  16. Hautie says:

I believe they pay much more in taxes by being a citizen of England.

And let’s be real, Victoria seems like a bottom line girl. She is looking at how to maintain their life style and not pay any more than they have to in taxes. To anyone.

So no I would not be surprise to see them all become US citizens. They are still “famous” but without the nasty British press. Plus get invited to the good things in LA.

  17. OXA says:

Being an Americn Citizen just makes it easier for them, less hassles and shorter lines @ immigration.

  18. kiki says:

“OXA Being an Americn Citizen just makes it easier for them, less hassles and shorter lines @ immigration.”

That makes absolutely no sense. Like, actually none. Impressive. Where IS ‘immigration’? The lines I mean? Is there an immigration building where we all wait in lines for immigrant type things? As an immigrant, I feel I should probably know about these very important lines, regardless of their length.

  19. sara says:

A lot of celebrities and ultra-rich are official residents of some place like Monaco where you have to spend a very limited time every year to maintain your citizenship and tax-free or low-tax status. Their business interests are probably based on the continent somewhere (think Bono and his tax-dodging in The Netherlands).

Part of the reason the uberwealthy travel so much, maintain multiple residences, etc. is for tax purposes so they can meet or dodge residency requirements.

  20. Kimble says:

He will NEVER renounce his British Citizenship!!!

He is paying his taxes here in the US like the rest of us Brits that live here – we DON’T pay taxes in the UK! You only pay double if you are a Green Card Holder and earning abroad which you then offset against your US taxes.

Not sure on what basis David and Victoria live here, but whatever, they are paying US taxes!!!

@ Kiki – I assume you are not an international traveller LOL!!!!

A Green Card allows us to queue with US Citizens when we enter the country. We don’t line up with the foreigners!

  21. Feebee says:

Sorry and this might rub a few the wrong way but becoming an American citizen/passport doesn’t mean you become “American”. Forget ‘where is immigration’ (international airports), what is American? Two of my children are entitled to triple citizenship. What does that make them? I’m with Beckham, if I became an American citizen I’ll always be a Kiwi first and foremost.

And we have found the tax situation to be advantageous… maybe so to the Beckhams.

  22. Susette says:

Kimble beat me to it. The immigration lines are at the airport when you enter the country. Not having to wait in them alone, would be worth getting US citizenship. LOL

Really, it all works to his benefit – He gets to have dual citizenship, so he isn’t losing anything, shorter lines coming into the country, relative anonymity, and I believe that foreigners are charged a higher tax rate, than citizens (not sure if that’s still the case).

  23. e-non says:

oh please … he’d never pass the citizenship exam.

  24. REALIST says:

It would serve you snobby Brits right if he did become a American citizen. If you are British, you are merely a “subject” to the monarchy. You go, David; come join us over here in the Colonies.

  25. Kimble says:

@24 REALIST: strangely I would much rather be a “snobby Brit” than an ass! Each to our own, I suppose LOL!

  26. Kim says:

We will welcome him with open arms as long as he goes though right procedures to become a citizen. Same as America would any other person. What other country can say that? NONE.

I think him and his family wanting to move to America permanently and become citizens speaks volumes for what a great country America is.

  27. Cleo says:

Do we have to take Gisele Bundchen and Heidi Klum too? Think of all their German cousins and their Japanese spouses that we’ll have to allow in as well … Bleurgh!!!

  28. Kimberly says:

They love it here because no one here gives a shit about them. We’re Americans, we don’t really give a shit about the Beckman Family. Become an American, I don’t care, you pay taxes so why not?

  29. Maud says:

I’m an American living in England and the only reason I can think to become a citizen is to obtain the right to vote.

  30. Nikkie says:

@ 9: I don’t know how it works for adults from other countries but I do know that it’s damn near impossible for an adult American to gain duel citizenship ANYWHERE.

I don’t think he should become an American. He really doesn’t want to be one. He may have answered the question in the positive, but then he backtracked and said he’d always be an Englishman. If that’s what he identifies as and he is proud to be English than he shouldn’t seek American citizenship.

  31. coexxi says:

People get so overemotional when it comes to nationalism. “.. he doesn’t really want it…” .. “…it is for tax reasons…” … bla bla

Every country has the right to set the rules how and why they give citizenship. More or less every country gives it more easily to people who bring special skills (science, sport..) or money. It’s good for the country.

  32. putitstraight says:

Unless I missed someone’s post here, to become an American Citizen, a person HAS TO RENOUNCE citizenship of birth. That’s all there is to it.

Straight from the Oath of US Citizenship: “…I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen…”

Dude either knows this and is just trying for a PR angle on how much he loves America but can’t fully become a citizen because he’ll have to renounce or…he’s too dim to have looked into the full implications of becoming an American.

Look on the bright side America – you’ll get to have him on your national team.
