Nicole Kidman’s face is capable of showing some emotions, say critics

It’s alleged that Nicole Kidman may have possibly have had work done on her face, notably Botox. Allegedly.

Now that Nicole has a new film coming out, her performance will be under scrutiny, as will the movability of her face, according to critic Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

Next month Nicole Kidman stars in Rabbit Hole, the sad drama about a couple quietly falling apart after the accidental death of their 4-year-old son. She plays a grieving wife and mother opposite Aaron Eckhart as her husband; Dianne Wiest is her mother. The movie’s opening is some weeks away (it’s in limited release Dec. 17), but I can already anticipate two consequences in the national chatter: First, there will be prognostication about Nicole Kidman’s chances for an Oscar nomination. Second, there will be talk about Nicole Kidman’s face.

[Entertainment Weekly, print edition, December 3, 2010]

Nicole is known for her porcelain skin, but lately it seems as if she’s gone to extremes to keep it wrinkle-free. Allegedly. And to give an Oscar-worthy performance, shouldn’t an actress be able to express grief through subtle movements of her face besides fake tears?

This debate is a polarizing one for Hollywood. How an actress looks off the screen is often as scrutinized as her performance in a film, and in this day of instant digital cameras that get so close you can count nose hairs, some actresses have seemingly become addicted to trying to look youthful and instead look freakish. Right, Nicole? Allegedly.

For what it’s worth, Kidman’s famous features do move — a little more — in Rabbit Hole. By whatever methods she has employed, the actor currently looks somewhat softer and a little more natural, playing a woman nearly catatonic with grief. And insofar as increased facial pliability will expand her work options, refocus critical attention on her considerable acting skills, and get Internet snark off her case and back where it belongs on the cases of talentless celebutards with plastic-surgery addictions, I say, Great! Show us your flaws, Nic! So you at your “worst” are better than we are on our very best days!

…The fact is, physical enhancement is as much a professional requirement for an actor aspiring to Hollywood fame as strength training is for an athlete aiming for the NFL. With the pressures on movie stars (particularly female), first by an industry (particularly male) that pays lip service to “reality” while obsessively promoting what’s young and hot, and in turn by us, the audience, it’s a wonder more actors, both male and female, don’t lose sight of what’s right and natural about their own bodies.

[Entertainment Weekly, print edition, December 3, 2010]

Maybe life with husband Keith Urban and daughter Sunday has chilled Nicole Kidman out so that she’s starting to realize how lovely she is without Botox and lip-plumpers. Allegedly.

“Nic listened to her heart against people’s advice and even her own instincts,” he [Urban] says of her standing by him. “I can’t put into words how I feel about what she did. My life is one thank-you to her….There wouldn’t be Sunny without Nic, because she really saved my life, so my instincts are for Nic to know she’s the No. 1 girl in my life and Sunday is No. 2,” he says. “Mom and Dad have got to be tight with each other — otherwise the whole thing’s unbalanced.”

[People, print edition, December 6, 2010]

I think Nicole is one of the most talented actresses working today, and I’ve always thought it was a shame she feels the need to Botox her face into a blank wall. Allegedly. I’ve admired the way she carries herself although she admits that red carpets scare her to death. The Others is one of my favorite scary movies, and I wish her all the happiness with Keith that she had sucked from her soul by Tom Cruise. So, to echo Lisa Schwarzbaum, ease up, Nicole, on trying to look like all those 20-year-olds trying to make names for themselves — you can act circles around the Gossip Girls and 90210s.

Rabbit Hole opens in limited release December 17, just in time for Oscar season.

She’s a good actress, and is good looking, but she seems very insecure to me. How much the culture we have emphasises beauty, being skinny and pretty is disgusting.

  2. kiko says:

the others is not scary and she has ruined her beautiful face 🙁

  3. Louise says:

I feel sorry for Nicole. It must suck that somebody had the audacity to write an article to talk about her facial expressions.

  4. Dee Vine says:

Too much fillers, so even without botox, I don’t think I can watch a movie with her without her face overshadowing her acting. She was a good actress but always a bit over rated.

The sad thing about plastic surgery if you decide to stop tweaking, your face will begin to look odd.

  5. mln says:

Nicole is an amazing actress and apparantely she is one of the few that can still emote emotion with a frozen face. But I wish she had been brave enough to be a little less toxed.

  6. Marjalane says:

I find all this recent publicity about how wonderful and happy Mr. and Mrs. Kidman are, to be just a little too conveniently timed to ah, “refresh” her image before the big award season. Everything about NK seems contrived to me; I think she learned well at the school of Tom Cruise fakery.

  7. devilgirl says:

I could give a crap less about her face. She is a good actress and the trailers for Rabbit Hole are good. Can’t wait to see it. Love John Cameron Mitchell.

  8. Mizz Tickles says:

I wish Nicole would go back to the curly hair which looks so lovely on her.

  9. Felicia says:

There is a newer model by the name of Pippa Black. She is currently on Outsourced but I think she looks so much like Nicole Kidman she could play her roles.

  10. bellaluna says:

Nicole is beautiful, and a very talented actress. I wish her all the happiness in the world with Keith & little Sunday. Love that pic of Keith and her.

@ Tigger – 10 years with Tom would do that to anyone. I can’t imagine being around him for 10 hours without telling him where to go or killing him, whatever. Remember, Nic was young when they got together. I’m sure he undermined her self-confidence every chance he got; all the better to keep her reliant on him!

  11. sasa says:

She looks like she is trying very hard to emote through her (alleged) procedures. I like her, she has always been a mix between interesting and slightly annoying for me because of her apparent self awareness. But now she added vain and strained to the mix which ruins things quite a lot.

  12. sara says:

Why celebrities are doing BOTOX? It looks awful, she has different eyes, one is droopy, the right eyebrow is higher than the left one and everybody in hollywood has the deformed face after BOTOX.
    What’s wrong in hollywood?

  13. candy says:

Nicole is one of my favorite actresses after Meryl Streep of course, but same caliber. Classy, no-nonsense, speaks her mind when necessary. She has found the perfect mate for herself so she has the perfect life. No need to be jealous or envious. Who cares if her face has fewer wrinkles than yours?

  14. bros says:

have you guys seen her in dead calm? one of her first movies. she is great in it, and she looks totally different. she’s been overrated since she hit it big in hollywood, and I dont get her hype. she doesnt even had a particularly good instinct for the movie roles she takes.

  15. Dawn says:

I love her in “To Die For”.

  16. Raven says:

Did anyone see the young woman who played Trinity in Sons of Anarchy? I think she’s Irish and looks very much like a young Nicole.

  17. Jayna says:

Her lips are down a little more, but she is still blowing them up too much on the side of top lip from the first photo. I had that look like the inside of the lips is showing. When she just filled them a little after she and Cruise broke up and when she was in Moulin Rouge she had the prettiest smile. Glad to see her back with red hair.

  18. original kate says:

i saw nicole a few years back in “margot gets married” or whatever and i was so distracted by her frozen, immobile face i couldn’t even tell you what the film was about.

  19. glo says:

@ sara – have you not heard – deformed is the new norm!

  20. bellaluna says:

@ Raven – Yes, I saw that SOA, and no, I don’t think Trinity looks like Nicole. But I will be watching OnDemand, and you can bet I’ll be extra vigilant, to see if you’re correct.

  21. wunderkindt says:

Terrified of even one single line, poor Nicole looks like she’s totally overdone the botox!

She’s pretty and would still be pretty if she eased up a bit on the injections and allowed for some natural facial movement. Nobody would care if she had a few lines.

It would be nice after all, to see an actors facial expressions change when they play a role. I have noticed a lot less facial expressions on actors faces nowadays. It’s just weird!

  22. carrie says:

she looks weird with unnatural lips and fake breasts and she does botox

and i LOVE her in “birth” or “the others”

  23. Bitter fruit says:

That plank of wood seems to really enjoy being married to gay men.

  24. gamblea says:

The method she had employed is called CGI. Nothing is real in movies now, nothing.

  25. poppy says:

    um, no.
if you cannot furrow your brow you are not capable of expressing emotion with your face.
good role? good director? you are still going to bring the ENTIRE production down with your “star” addition and frozen face.
nicole can’t do it. she can squeeze her eyes but she cannot move her forehead. no movement there.
if she is such a great actress she is letting her insecurities interfere with her acting abilities.
who wants to look at a victim of cosmetic enhancement/surgery?
    .
hey, if you want to say you are free from “enhancement”, please make sure you can move all parts of your face. otherwise, stfu and quit telling stories that you don’t do anything cosmetically to yourself.
the real world knows better. we aren’t part of the machine and we know you have had your nose shaved and your forehead frozen. you’re not sucking my dick and it is painfully obvious so you don’t need to lie.
fyi, it is so obvious. to the little people. yes, the peons are not fooled by your escapades into cosmetic freezing/enhancements/alterations.
hey angelina jolie, you want people to still worship you or any star?, jeremy priven, you are in this as well with your bald head and ultra fake hair.
folks are going to notice when you have work done. notice and document.
leave it alone. most people would pay money to have what you want to alter. stop it.
guess the internets are not your friend.
    pictures are NOT your friend.
they expose all of your lies.
if nicole is such a fine actress we will never know. not only did she shack up with tom to gain publicity and notarity, she has frozen her beautiful face to “prove” she is legit.
hey nicole, i don’t care who you marry for a baby or publicity. quit telling stories. we know. we can see it. you’ve had tons of work. tons of botox. you couldn’t move your forehead to save sunday’s life.
stfu. you’ve had just as much “work” done as anybody in hollywood.
keep telling your stories and see how your films bomb.
    you as well st angelina.

    freaking fake face bitches.

why is my netflix cue full of foreign films? the faces look real and the faces move accordingly.

  26. launicaangelina says:

@ dawn: me too!!! to die for was such a great movie.

  27. DetRiotgirl says:

This might be off topic. But, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her daughter! Celeb kids are in the tabs all the time. So, I feel like that’s kind of strange.

Anyway, I like her. She’s a decent actress. This is also kind of random, but does anyone else remember the sex scenes between her and Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut? So awkward. There’s a scene in that movie where Nicole’s character is telling Tom’s character about a time that she fantasized about cheating on him, and Tom says something like “But, women don’t have those types of urges. They don’t think like men do.” (paraphrasing, of course). I remember thinking “I bet that’s what Tom thinks in real life too” the first time I saw that. I’m glad she left him.

  28. Shay says:

For those who haven’t seen Kidman, circa 80s, the work she has had done is actually an improvement!
In the 80s, before she was acting, she was an editorial model, full of facial freckles and no lips to speak of.
Sure, she has overdone the Botox, but the other add ons are an improvement.

  29. Penguen says:

I used to have such a girl crush on her in the early to mid 90’s. She was so gorgeous. It’s so sad how messed up her face is. She really ruined it.

I’ll admit that some of the blind items I’ve read haven’t warmed my feelings about her.

  30. frewt says:

Take it from someone who knows, that brow is botoxed. The eyebrow arch is a give away. Clever injectors know how to target certain muscles so that some move and others don’t. But aside from the botox, its the wonky lip injection/implant, unnecessary veneers and fake tits that have me shaking my head. Irrespective of raw talent, how can and actress that vain and insecure be respected.

  31. W.O.M. says:

I gasped at that first picture. She looks like a very bad Madame Tussauds wax replica of the REAL Nicole Kidman.

  32. Zoé says:

I’ve seen ‘Rabbit Hole’. She’s absolutely fantastic in it. And she looks very natural. It’s weird to me that she’s the only A-list actress being criticised for using Botox when there are others who look far worse than she does: Angelina Jolie or Sandra Bullock for example. Why nobody say anything about them? I was shocked to see how plastic Bullock’s face looked in ‘The Blind Side’. The fact that she won an Oscar for it is an absolute shame IMO. Here’s hoping Nicole gets at least a nomination for ‘Rabbit Hole’. After all the great performances she’s given over the years (To Die For, Dogville, Birth, The Others, Margot at the Wedding…), she truly deserves it.

  33. Dannnii says:

The amount of cosmetic procedures she has had done has been just grossly exaggerated by the “media” for years.
Yes, there are moments when she went too far with the restylane, but it isn’t THAT much.
She is just lovely and a gifted actress.

  34. bee no. 2 says:

These days i just can’t get past her scary upper lip

  35. crazydaisy says:

Huh. I always thought she was a HORRIBLE actress. Her and Julia Roberts, both.

It is sad that she is so insecure about her looks, also. I don’t think that we, the audience, only want to look at “young and perfect.”

I’d like to see some REAL. We need healthy role models for aging. Come on, celebs. Break free and give us something honest.

  36. Mia135 says:

The Others is one of my favourite movies.

  37. Alexa says:

“…I don’t think that we, the audience, only want to look at ‘young and perfect’…I’d like to see some REAL. We need healthy role models for aging… ”

I would too, but I’ve pretty much given up on mainstream movies. I’m also incredibly annoyed by Hollywood’s need to include at least one gratuitous t&a scene in every movie. I’m not a prude, but I don’t want to view peoples’ private parts – up close and larger-than-life – when I go to the movies. It makes me feel embarrassed and uncomfortable and somewhat angry and humiliated. It’s not necessary and should be saved for Adult Films imo.

  38. Roxanne75 says:

Um I hate her but I like her….maybe I like to hate her or I hate to like her?

  39. PrettyLights says:

I have loved her since Moulin Rouge, which I adore. She looked gorgeous in that movie, I really hope she stops messing with her face. It def does not look the same as it used to. I don’t think she’s a fantastic actress in all her movies (she was pretty bad in Bewitched) but she does have talent and she will need her face to move to keep being respected as an actress.

  40. Ruffian9 says:

You can’t act if you can’t move your face. Period.

candy: Are you willing to share whatever drug it is you’re on?
