BAFTAs Fashion: The good, the bad and the crumpets

bafta_awards_06_wenn3205943

Quite honestly, I get more pleasure out of random British celebrities dressed up for the BAFTAs than I get from seeing the insanity of the Grammys. That being said, there weren’t enormously love/hate moments with this year’s BAFTA fashions, so I’m doing the best, the worst and the meh all in one big fashion post. Let’s start with Emma Watson – I like her a great deal, and I have high hopes for her, but chica needs to just stick with sleek, modern, clean styles. This lace, frothy, Gone With the Wind style does nothing for her. Plus, the fit on this dress is horrible. And I don’t think much of her makeup either.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Amy Adams in coral Elie Saab. While I tend to think this is the wrong color for her – the paleness on her skin is wrong, and the pink clashes too much with her hair – I also give her a pass. Even though it’s kind of wrong, it also kind of works in some way.

bafta_awards_01_wenn3205946

Colin Firth’s wife Livia, looks worlds better than her biscuit-flashing appearance at the London Critics Awards. She’s a beautiful woman, and she looks so much better with her hair down. Plus, the Nina Skarra dress is gorgeous and regal, and perfect for the wife of the Best Actor winner.

bafta_awards_03_wenn3205938

Neve Campbell managed to make it despite being attacked by an assailant armed with fully-loaded blusher. The dress is Cavalli, and it is unflattering.

bafta_awards_08_wenn3205740

Doesn’t Minnie Driver look like she borrowed one of Elizabeth Hurley’s busty white gowns? That’s exactly what it looks like – the dress was fitted for Liz Hurley, but somehow ended up on Minnie. Even if the fit was better, it would still be meh.

bafta_awards_17_wenn3205749

Jessica Alba in Versace. It looks like… she’s trying to do a version of Elizabeth Taylor, I think. The way her braids caught the light, I thought she was actually wearing a tiara. I have to say, I don’t really like this on Alba. The color is too bright, the styling is tacky with that necklace and the braided hair. Eh.

bafta_awards_18_wenn3205930

I think Hailee Steinfeld looked perfect for her age, and for her situation. She was nominated, but she likely knew she wasn’t going to win. It’s not an occasion for a 14-year-old girl to put on a huge ball gown and make it all about “LOOK AT ME!!” Hailee went subdued and still cute and sweet. Totally appropriate.

bafta_awards_20_wenn3206041

Hand to God, I thought Tilda Swinton was one of the best dressed women/aliens of the night. This Haider Ackermann suit is INCREDIBLE and I want one. Look at the cut of it! She looks amazing! I can’t believe I’m gushing about The Alien, but there you go!

bafta_awards_27_wenn3205945

I like the idea of Jennifer Lawrence’s Stella McCartney dress. She’s young, but not too young to wear something sexy, and the navy was certainly a good color choice. BUT – half of the photos of Jennifer at the BAFTAs are of her adjusting her boobs. She’s falling out of it – and that’s tacky. Yeah, she’s young. She’ll figure it out.

bafta_awards_28_wenn3206050

Julianne Moore in guess who? I really wonder if Tom Ford secretly hates her, because for some reason, he makes her look like hell, consistently. The back of the dress is particularly bad – there’s a huge bow, and it makes Julianne look like she has an enormous ass. And you know what else? Formal eveningwear shouldn’t be velvet. Not anymore. It just doesn’t photograph well. Last thing: Julianne’s makeup artist hates her.

bafta_awards_41_wenn3206062

Natascha McElhone in Alexander McQueen. I should hate this color on her, I should be criticizing the gloves… but I just can’t. She looks gorgeous.

bafta_awards_53_wenn3206076

Last: Thandie Newton in Monique Lhuillier. Hate the woman, hate the dress, hate the “LOOK AT ME” fashion statement. I’m totally biased, though. I’ve had a completely irrational hatred of Thandie Newton for years.

I think Alba is too short for that style of dress. It just makes her look like she’s smuggling under her dress.

  2. brin says:

Emma Watson looked great. Didn’t even recognize Neve Campbell (ugh) and Thandie Newton looks like she was attacked by a rosebush.

  3. Violet says:

i love emma watsons dress. i think she always looks great and she was accepting a pretty big award so i think the dress is appropriate.

  4. T. says:

    Natascha McElhone

  5. Rita says:

Livia’s dress is baffo. The color is so regal and the fit perfect. I love an honest looking woman decked in stylish elegance.

Tilda needs to take off her lifeguard whistle when she’s in the sun.

Natascha: The mystique in her name matches perfectly with her look…including the gloves. So beautiful, I would be too intimidated to approach her…unless she had a bowl of chocolate cover cashews.

  6. Hautie says:

    Well my completely biased opinion…

I loved the dress Alba wore. I think it is the best she has looked in along time.

I like the dress Minnie wore. I like the fact that she has not run out and bought her self a set of fake boobs.

But is it me or does she look like the lost twin to that Bethany chick… the one from that Bravo show of the tragically tacky housewives in NYC.

I have no words for the odd fitting dress on Neve. I really like her but that dress is not flattering.

And I hate that prom dress @1989 that Colin Firth’s wife wore. 🙂

  7. Rose says:

Colin Firth’s wife looks like an older version of Lea Michele.

  8. renai(jrt) says:

I actually love Julianne Moore’s look and her dapper Tom ford especially in the same frame…..that color is fabulous on her!!!

  9. malachais says:

I LOVE Julianne and Thandie’s dress, amazing, and they fit perfectly. Julianne looks adorable in this dress in photos, I can imagine its not so flattering in movement.

  10. MarenGermany says:

emma watson always looks nice and so sophisticated.
    cant help but love her.

  11. Gwen says:

    Tilda is amazing!

I share the dislike of Thandie. Ugh!

  12. devilgirl says:

    Natascha McElhone- Hate her dress.

    Neve Campbell- Looks terrible.

    Harry Potter girl- Meh.

Thandie Newton- Kaiser, I too, have disliked this woman since I first laid eyes on her in Interview with a Vampire. Rocknrolla would have been a good movie if she hadn’t been in it, same w/Mission Impossible (2 or 3?). I don’t know what it is about her, but I hate her.

  13. KLO says:

Amy Adams to me looked the best she’s ever looked at an awards show. I love her hair, she’s a goddess. Alba’s dress looked great on camera too (on this photo it just looks weird). I watched the show and most of the women looked really good. I liked the colorful dresses.

  14. Mandy says:

I hate prints like Thandie Newton’s dress. It looks like the hem was trailed in the mud, except all over.

  15. JRT says:

I think Livia missed the mark again. She looked more youthful with her hair back and this dress looks too big for her. Like I said before, this girl needs to put on some Chanel and call it a day… Maybe she has something against the french…

  16. Crash2GO2 says:

Haha! You hate Thandie ’cause she did the deed with Gerald in RocknRolla, Kaiser. 😉

I think Minnie looks fabulous! I’ve always liked her.

  17. renai(jrt) says:

poor Neve, thats one hot mess…and what is with the wet bottom at the hem….. just bad all over

  18. Solveig says:

I wonder if every person who goes to England suddenly lose the sense of fashion. The BAFTA were such a disaster!
The only dress I like is Livia’s one, but I don’t get those ribbons (?) on the left leg. The coulour is beautiful, the classic cut fits her slim body perfectly.
Neve Campbell… what’s happened to her? She looks so old and homely. The dress is not bad per se, but it is unflattering on her.
Tilda Swinton is always impeccable, but I’d love to see her on a cyber-classic-punk-sofisticated gown.
Jennifer Lawerence dress is cute, but I don’t think that a woman could were it without looking slightly vulgar.
There’s no hope for Miseralba, that colour on her is wrong, the cut is wrong, the hair is wrong. Most likely SHE is wrong.

  19. Kaiser says:

Crash – That didn’t help, but I hated her long before that. I cop to it being irrational, though. Whenever I see her, I want to smack her.

  20. renai(jrt) says:

that Stella McCartney dress is horrid

  21. renai(jrt) says:

if that dress Emma watson had on was knee length and fitted tight, it would have looked stunning, but the flowing gown makes it look outdated..

  22. renai(jrt) says:

the Alexander McQueen dress is my favorite but the bodice needs to be more fitted and this dress also looks a bit too big for her…..cant they afford to have these dresses fitted before wearing them??
Minnie Drivers dress looks too small in the bodice… get a mirror folks

  23. knitter says:

Interesting that there are so many Thandie haters out there! I don’t know much about her, but have always admired her beauty. Even you haters must admit that her arms look exceptionally graceful in that photo.

  24. Lynda says:

Natascha McElhone…she is SO stunning. and I like Julianna’s dress. And Liv needs not to dress in an adventure. She can do something so classical our eyes (and CF’s) eyes would drop out of heads. She’s got nothing to prove. BTW…how did Julianna get Tom Ford??

  25. Maud says:

Off topic a bit….I got Tilda Swinton’s perfume, Like This, for Valentine’s Day and I LOVE it!! It’s gorgeous and yummy and slighly alien.

  26. Nanea says:

    TILDA!

I liked the color on Livia’s dress, not the ruffles at the side. Her best accessory though? Colin!

I would have liked Amy’s dress a lot in a different color on her.

Neve in Cavalli? Cavalli = tacky, always. Just look at who’s promoting his lingerie, and just look at how he looks.

I liked the color of Jessica Alba’s dress, something in the design seemed off though.

I like Tom Ford very much, but I have no idea why he comes up with some of the stuff he makes other people wear. Maybe Julianne’s dress would have been nice had the fabric been different, minus the bow of course.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Stella McC dress looks good, maybe she should have tried tape?

Thandie has a good body structure but a bad attitude, IMO. The only occasion where I would tolerate Monique Lhuillier would be at a wedding, not in my family though.

Emma’s dress is too pale for her and has too much going on, different kinds of print, those pleats… Just no!

Good thing Hailee had a miss with that Björk tribute dress at the opening of the Berlin Film Festival the other day. This looks nice, although I’ve seen better on her.

    Natasha – she’s quirky.

  27. LittleFATMe says:

Geez, Kaiser! You can’t announce a completely irrational hatred for someone without a little back story. Now my brain is running all sorts of senarios where you (as played by that cute little kitten that shows up when you comment) is all running frantic while a ninja-ed up Thandie is chasing and throwing ninja stars!

  28. serena says:

Oh my God! What the hell happened to Neve Campbell?? She looks like hell, so fat, old… ugh.. I used to love her.
I agree with the quote on Emma Watson, I like her a lot too.. but this dress is unflattering and the make up is horrible.

Minnie Driver..I just hate her, she’s useless.

  29. fabgrrl says:

    SWINTON!

  30. knitter says:

@Maud: Thanks for the tip about Like This. I’ve added it to my wishlist!

  31. Cheyenne says:

Julianne Moore’s dress would have been fine if she had cut that draggy bow off the back.

Tilda Swinton still looks like a space alien to me.

  32. Sandy says:

Your hatred Of T. Newton is not irrational. Her voice is like fingernails on chalkboard. And she tells stupid jokes about her childhood. Her face screams slap me. Its not irrational. Its deep and its real.

  33. JuJuBee says:

Neve Campbell looks hard and she’s only 37. Hmmm….wonder if that is her true age?

  34. Roxanne75 says:

    Neve Campbell–WTF??

  35. bluhare says:

Tilda Swinton looks amazing; she knows her style and sticks with it. No one, not even Cate Blanchett, can wear a tuxedo/pantsuit like she can. I would kill to have that look.

I think Natasha McElhone is gorgeous in anything.

And is it me, or does Neve Campbell look a bit like Elisabetta Canalis?

  36. sasa says:

    Tilda FTW!

  37. I Choose Me says:

“I’ve had a completely irrational hatred of Thandie Newton for years.”

@ Kaiser. I hate her too. Every movie I’ve ever seen her in, she irks the sh-t out of me. Beginning with Beloved.

She does have beautiful skin though.
    B!tch.

I want to marry Tilda Swinton.

  38. OXA says:

I say looking at Jessica Alba’s cheeks and boobs, she is pregnant wearing a suitable dress..

  39. Masala says:

Haha, I happen to love Thandie. She’s a great actress and amazing with accents. And she looks killer in that dress 😛

  40. Wendy City says:

I don’t get the Thandie Newton hate. I think it is so funny. Maybe because people say I look like her.

I have an irrational hate for Angie Harmon. I want to slap her everytime I see her face or hear her pack-a-day cigarette voice.

I disagree about Haille Steinfeld. I think that is so matronly and just wrong on so many levels from the top to the bottom. She is such a cute girl and usually gets it right…but this is all types of wrong.

  41. hyuch says:

Thandie had a “realtionship” with a director who was WAY older when she was very young. She basically now calls it abuse and it has made her a bit, ummm, more intense than other actresses perhaps? Maybe she is annoying, but she is certainly beautiful, rose bush or no.

Tilda, Tilda Yilda. What is it about suits? Love love love anyone who can wear them well.

    R

  42. dj says:

Tilda and Natasha both exquisite in completely different ways. A+

  43. Fi says:

    Amy looks AMAZING.

You clearly haven’t seen the back of SWINTON’s suit.

    That McQueen is terrible.

Jennifer Lawrence looks like she just stepped out of a Western saloon.

And Hailee does NOT look her age. That hemline is ridiculous. Everything is ridiculous, actually.

  44. Blaster says:

LOVE Thandie and that dress. Such a beautiful face. And I agree with @Masala. She’s a chameleon when it comes to accents.

  45. Jean says:

Who gives a rat’s ass about the dresses … why the frak was Alba even there? Prestigious British acting awards. A bit out of her league, no?

  46. Isa says:

Jessica Alba’s dress would’ve made a perfect maternity dress AND it’s beautiful.

So there’s one for all of those that say it’s difficult to find something nice to wear while pregnant. Not if you’re a celebrity!

  47. Tiffany says:

    Swinton looked good!? Wow, surprising.
Wish Emma hadn’t cut her hair.
I don’t like or dislike Thandie, but my God she is gorgeous, have always thought so.
I literally spent all day at Harrods here in London Sunday shopping with my daughter who turned 13 yesterday (so amazing my baby is that old!) and saw all these dresses and designers there. It is the most fantastical store in the universe. Literally a room for each designer. Did see one Cavalli I loved, but man are the rest vomitous.
Again, Harrods! 2 days and have not seen it all yet. It’s like Nordstrom, Saks, and Barneys all got together on steroids. Dog aromatherapy salon, check. 6000 dollar rocking horse, check, 100 pair Louboutin, check.
My googly eyes, check! Price tags-holy crap land!

  48. This is the hottest that I??ve learn online! Keep up the nice work.

No amount of “fashion” can rid Thandie Newton of her annoying smarminess. She can go! Along with the other annoying one January Jones ! Ugh
