Kirsten Dunst in Chanel, winning Best Actress at Cannes: meh or stunning?

wenn3358437

These are some photos from the closing ceremony – Kiki Dunst, The Gerard Butler-Hater, took home the festival’s “Best Actress” prize for Melancholia, the Lars Von Trier film. Kiki actually attended the closing ceremony, almost as if she had been tipped off that she was going to win something (note: I think the winners ARE actually notified ahead of time). Kiki threw on this Chanel Haute Couture gown. It reminds me of what she wore for the AmFAR gala last week – Kiki does love her frothy, tulle-heavy gowns. I’m kind of meh on the gown, but the shoes kind of ruin what could have been a solid look. Closed-toe black with that frothy Chanel? It doesn’t work. Here’s more about the winners:

As the 64th Cannes Film Festival came to a close Sunday, its jury awarded the top prize to a movie that split the critics: director Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

Jury president Robert De Niro made the announcement, while the reclusive Malick was not in the French town to accept his Palme d’Or (Golden Palm).

Other winners Sunday evening included Kirsten Dunst as best actress for controversial director Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia. Earlier this week, the Danish filmmaker had been banned from the festival for rambling remarks he made at a press conference about how he sympathized with Hitler.

Dunst alluded to her director’s outburst during her acceptance speech Sunday, saying, “What a week this has been.”

French actor Jean Dujardin was named best actor for a popular silent, black-and-white comedy, The Artist – to be seen in the U.S. later this year. Best director was Nicolas Winding Refn, for Drive, which stars Ryan Gosling.

Other members of the Cannes jury included Jude Law and Uma Thurman.

[From People]

Ryan Gosling was there to celebrate his director’s win. He and Refn are in the midst of some kind of homoerotic bromance, from the looks of it. I’ve never really had a homoerotic fantasy involving the Gosdong, but I may have to start. He’s just not like that for me – I look at photos of Daniel Craig or Javier Bardem, and I imagine them kissing, licking and biting each other. When I look at Gosling, all I see is a good-looking Canadian kid with no sexual dramz.

Also in the photos – Jean Dujardin, who is rather handsome, Robert DeNiro and Uma Thurman, who was WEARING THE HELL out of that blue gown.

Umm, you can see Uma’s spanx. Not particularly fierce.

  2. Theuth says:

Go Uma, you mighty goddess 😀 she rocked this festival! And as I say in another thread, I am disappointed in KD winning, I really hoped in Tilda Swinton.
But I’m glad for best male (I’m a sucker for old black&white movies and The Artist look amazing) and for best director.

  3. Ria says:

I love it. I mean I love the dress but she isn’t exactly pulling it off…

  4. Carolyn says:

Kiki looks great. Uma looks awful in that monstrosity – no one would look good in that!

  5. geekychic says:

    @ matt,
thank you for saying this, i kinda wasn’t sure!
don’t like uma, don’t get her-and this dress won’t change my views.
but-i don’t think i’ll ever, ever understand style of k. dunst.. no common sense.

  6. really says:

    Uma rules!

  7. almond says:

You can definitely see her spanx. Don’t they attempt a sort of trial and error with these dresses before descending on the red carpet? She looks amazing of course, but it takes away from the beauty of the architecture if I can see the internal structure and scaffolding.

As for Kiki’s dress, it’s underwhelming and it clashes horribly with those shoes. Can’t these stylists do better? One has to wonder…

  8. Canuck says:

Dunst looks much better with strong jewel colours, these pale colours wash her out. Agree for the shoes, they don’t go well with the dress. She looked great in that mustard dress and the one with the teal next to her face.

Jean DuJardin, sigh… he’s such a lovely talented man. Funny as h*ll in the OSS movies :))

And Uma, spanx or no spanx she looks great in that dress.

  9. lilred says:

Kiki has for sure looked worse,Uma looks lovely in that color I just don’t reallyt like the neck line of the dress.

  10. kasper says:

the colour is amazing – why isn’t she in more films?

  11. junipergreen says:

Looks like a bra to me. Why assume it’s spanx? She’s looks awful here. Terrible dress, bad makeup. Uma is so damn gorgeous, too. Usually she can rock whatever she wants and look great. Not this time. Beautiful figure, though.

Edit: Oh wait. Is that line on her thigh part of the spanx? If so…ughh. Does she even need spanx??

  12. mln76 says:

Meloncholia is supposed to be really good but I am betting KiKi got the prize for the way she handled LVT’s Nazi rant….Uma’s Spanx are way embarassing.

  13. Maritza says:

What a pity that she wore that dress with black shoes, other than that she looks beautiful. Uma as always fabulous, spanx and all.

  14. Jez says:

Those are the same shoes she wore to the MET gala. I don’t understand why she always wears them, they ruin outfits because she puts them with dresses that don’t match.

  15. Fabianne says:

Kiki’s dress is ok, but it would’ve looked better with other shoes. Uma’s dress reminds me of that British socialite who wore head-to-toe blue at the royal wedding. Too much blue. I think the Cannes jury wanted to award in some way all the films they believed were frontrunners for the Palme d’Or. And Melancholia was a solid contender.

  16. garvels says:

I in all honesty do not even recall a movie that Dunst has starred in-which leads me to believe her acting is mediocre at best. The only thing I recall about her is her tabloid fame highlighting her fauxmance with Jakey and her drug abuse.

I also think it was in bad form for her to openly diss a fellow actor like Gerard Butler. Butler is “single” and gave her a lame compliment and she openly blasts him. I wonder how she would feel if other actors talked openly about Kirsten’s behavior when she was strung out on drugs.

  17. Aria says:

I love Kiki so much that I will forgive her for this outfit. The dress was not that bad but the shoes were just horrible. Anyway her hair and makeup were perfect. On the other hand Uma was not at her best. The makeup was too harsh and the dress looked cheap.

  18. Jez says:

“I in all honesty do not even recall a movie that Dunst has starred in”

Uh….Interview with a Vampire, Bring it On, Marie Antoinette, Spiderman 1, 2 and 3???

  19. garvels says:

Jez-I did see Marie Antoinette years ago and it was Okay but I did not recall the actress. Thanks for jogging my memory.

  20. serena says:

Good for Kiki, I’m happy for her, truly.

Yeah the shoes ruin what it would have been a cute, decent almost beautiful outfit.

  21. futureperfect says:

The shoes make Kirsten’s dress a little too corpse bridal, but it’s a beautiful confection and she looks lovely. Uma’s is beautiful too — the color, the line — so the woman wears Spanx. Oh my god she’s human! She has a stunning figure.

Too much spackle on her face though, that’s a pity.

  22. thesea says:

WTF Uma’s body? It’s fantastic. She’s drop dead gorgeous in that dress.

  23. Hollowdoll says:

Damn Uma! You still got it!

  24. mln76 says:

@garvels she didn’t openly discuss she was ‘overheard by friends’ meaning maybe it didn’t even happen but if it did she has every right not to worship Butlers skeezy self.

  25. the original bellaluna says:

@ Jez – Wimbledon. (Of course, my real reason for watching it whenever it came on was Paul Bettany!)

Those shoes are in wild contradiction to that frothy dress. Too dark, too heavy, too ugly.

Uma is not one of my faves, by any means, but the woman is beautiful. Her face is “real” in a world that’s not.

  26. GeekChic says:

I find it actually kind of charming that Kiki wears the same shoes often. It’s better than the celebs who have 18 zillion pairs of shoes and throw them away after one red carpet. The down side, of course, is that they don’t always go well with the outfit she has chosen, but I kind of like that level of cluelessness. After all, Kiki has never claimed or tried to be a fashion girl.

  27. gms says:

I love Jean Dujardin!! Look his visible joy when he received the prize. So sincerely overwhelmed and guenuinely happy !

  28. LBeees says:

@Matt, so… women are supposed to sashay down the runway without any kind of undergarment? We complain if we see a bulge, complain if there’s cellulite, complain if we see a panty-line or bra strap!

Give her a break, jeez, she looks fabulous, is in wonderful shape, and yes, like any sane person wears spanx under a form-fitting dress.

  29. melangie says:

It looks like Kiki packed for France & forgot her suitcase of shoes. I hate it when that happens

  30. Tiffany says:

Dunst’s shoes ruin the entire look.
Uma,I don’t get it. First everyone rips on Princess Kate’s eyeliner, but Uma’s is 10 times worse! Not only do we have spanx lines all over, but some weird stain on one of her boobs. Must have used them as a crumb catcher at dinner!

  31. garvels says:

@min76-Ha ha….You mean she was overheard by her friend-most likely her PR buddy-to plant the story in the tabloids to give the girl some buzz to generate interest in her upcoming projects.

  32. Crash2GO2 says:

Now see, THAT’S the way to lean your body in order to look fabulous on the red carpet (Uma). Gwen, take notes!

  33. mln76 says:

@LBees the Spanx situation is embarrassing Uma shouldn’t have worn such a thin gown if she needed them that isn’t sexist to point that out.

  34. Blue says:

Spanx or not I think Uma looks amazing. Love the dress & the colour

  35. mln76 says:

@garvels whatever she just won a prestigious award at Cannes and Butler is in another craptastic rom-com …Hell he comes on to street performers, if anyone wants a chance with Butler go stand on a street corner.

  36. Gwen says:

I think both Kirsten and Uma look great.

  37. Canuck says:

Just a comment about spanx and gowns. Sometimes these things show through with heavy duty lighting whereas they don’t under normal lighting. We’ve seen many an actress in a black dress and no bra whose dress becomes semi-transparent when the flashes go off.

  38. Kim says:

MEH! She is ALWAYS meh. Cant see how this untalented girl still gets hired. Really she cant act to save her life. Who is she sleeping with? seriously

  39. Kim says:

Umas is in great shape but the dress is cheap looking/screams Euro hooker.

  40. wunderkindt says:

Kirsten in silver-white isnt stunning just because it is too washed out.

Uma’s look is better. Who cares if her spanx show thru? At least it’s not like Blohan’s tits.

  41. garvels says:

@min76-Good for her and Butler is single… so if Butler wants to hit on women on street corners,in planes,on boats,in clubs and at theaters then that is his business..regardless,I still enjoy most of his movies:o)

  42. Annie_Grey says:

Kirstens facial expressions always look like, “Can I leave, now?”

  43. LuckyLilGem says:

Uma looked great. Kiki- take notes! Ditch the ostrich looking ensembles.

  44. gg says:

Love Uma in blue. Dunst has no lips, poor thing. I wonder if she can kiss with them things.

  45. luls says:

I like kiki’s dress! Shes looks cute and comfortable, yet still pretty and glamorous enough for the red-carpet.

What is with the obsessive hatred against neutral-toned dresses on this website!!?

Uma’s dress is spectacular at 1st glimpse, but quickly gets old, once u see all the flaws. Also, the close-up of her face is harsh!

  46. Nikki Girl says:

I actually dig Kirsten’s dress, I think it’s unique, and I LOVE the shoes with it, it all goes strangely well together. I think Uma looks good too.

  47. LV says:

I am glad to be a visitor of this unadulterated web site! , thanks for these rare information! .
