Gwyneth Paltrow might not deign to record a country album for peasants

goop12

For months now, we’ve been hearing about Gwyneth Paltrow’s desire to sign a recording contract and record a country album. For real. Because when you think “country” you totally think of a half-Jewish, flat-ironed bottle blonde who lives in London and NYC and extols the virtues of “must-have” $18,000 wardrobes and endless juice detoxes. That just screams “country” to me. Anyway, from what I gather, Gwyneth made a lot of noise about wanting to record an album and several labels took the bait and offered her various contracts. Some even claimed that she was being offered a $900,000 signing deal. Now Page Six reports that Goop’s recording contract is no longer in play, and that it all came down to how BUSY she is and how she wanted so much money for the pleasure of having her deign to twang it up for us peasants:

Gwyneth Paltrow’s talks for a record deal with Atlantic Records have crumbled, sources confirmed to Page Six.

We reported in March that the “Country Strong” star was close to a deal with the label to record a country album. But a source told us, “Atlantic bosses were very interested, and [Atlantic owner] Warner chief Lyor Cohen was very supportive. But then the talks halted and the deal fizzled out. There was a rumor that Paltrow wanted $1 million to sign, but that is a ridiculous figure. Atlantic is still interested in signing her.”

It’s believed the Oscar winner was distracted by other opportunities in her busy career, including possible movie roles and her new cookbook. There’s even buzz she might turn up for a few surprise appearances on this summer’s “Glee” tour.

Paltrow’s rep told us, “Atlantic was not the only company pursuing her, and she still has not decided if she wants to record an album,” adding, it “is still something she is considering.”

[From Page Six]

Classic Goop with her rep’s line, right? “Atlantic was not the only company pursuing her, and she still has not decided if she wants to record an album.” Meaning, “Everybody wants Gwyneth, because she’s so fabulous and important and such an amazing singer and people are just WAITING IN LINE to hear some of her goopy lyrics, but she is still undecided as to whether those peasants are important enough.”

At the end of the day, I just hate her voice. I hate her speaking voice and her singing voice. While technically she’s a half-decent (but not great) singer, you can tell that she thinks she’s super-talented vocally, like she’s a blonder, skinnier, more important Adele. And THAT is pathetic. Here are some Classic Goop performances. That Glee clip makes me want to gouge out my eardrums.

    GOETH AWAY, GWYNETH!

    It’s time to take a nice, long vacation and relax away from the cameras and Internet for a while…I’m getting sick of hearing/seeing/reading about you!

  2. Eve says:

    Gwyneth Paltrow might not deign to record a country album for peasants.

    Praise Jeebus!!!

    Oh, I only saw the word “might” now…I have my fingers crossed for “won’t” then.

  3. the original bellaluna says:

    Oh, there is a God! Her voice is beyond awful. I actually had to change the car radio to something else when her song came on. It was just that bad. (And I actually TRIED to listen to it, just because of all the Goop-hype. I couldn’t.)

  4. mln76 says:

    Bleh I feel really bad for her although she looks great she isn’t aging well…She’s getting more superficial, and more desperate with age. Goopy go home and grow up come back into the spotlight when you have something of substance to share.

  5. umabrasileira says:

    What the hell is wrong with her eyes in that first clip? The woman blinks so much it distracted me! Is it part of the performance? She think that’s what country singers do to be country?

  6. original kate says:

    whenever i hear goop singing about “a double wide with pink flamingos” i die a little inside.

  7. thegreatdefender says:

    why does she make it so easy to hate her?

  8. Annaloo says:

    She’s starting to look a little like one of those Nelson Brothers in the top pic!

  9. Slim Charles says:

    @ Original Kate “whenever i hear goop singing about “a double wide with pink flamingos” i die a little inside” LOL!

  10. PrettyTarheel says:

    @original kate:
    She probably thinks they are real pink flamingos. “What? You don’t have live exotic birds on your lawn? I was just discussing the mating habits of the macaw with my dear friend and noted ornithologist Dr. Birdpoop, who thinks I should really pursue a career as a bird whisperer since I am such a talented multi-hyphenate, and he mentioned that live flamingos would make a stunning addition to any Miami beach front home. You know, for the working proles who can’t afford Malibu.”

  11. kasper says:

    this is quite a funny article. it stinks of desperation. goophead is too busy because of “possible movie roles”? obviously her career is tanking, any actress that is remotely in demand has work lined up for the next three years.

    but now i understand what the goopster means by having to work so hard. most of us are too busy because of actual jobs. i would love to be too busy because of “possible” work. that would give me time to get to know my fishmonger and build a home sauna so that i can drink guinness and red wine in it.

  12. Christine says:

    I suggest that this is why the world did not end on May 21 – God knew Goop wasn’t going to record a country album, so she said, “Ok, no need to destroy the world.”

  13. *Roxy* says:

    Didn’t like the Glee clip. Too much attention on Goop. Background girls are way better. She somehow just not believable. She is screaming too much.

  14. FakeJohnLocke says:

    So much hate against Gwyneth. I hope it feels good to direct that inner rage against someone you will never meet or talk to during your life. At this point, it just seems like the name “Gwneth” is a Pavlonian cue to unload whatever angst is churning away inside you at the moment. Vent about Gwyneth… go!

    Why does she make it easy to hate her, somebody asked? Why is it so easy for you to let loose hate at a stranger, I would ask in return. That’s how you choose to use your time, that’s part of the answer.

  15. Quest says:

    Oh Hoooooraayyy…joyous me. At least she spared us the pain.

  16. kasper says:

    @ FakeJohnLocke:

    you are right, it is far more productive to spend your time lecturing the commenters on a blog dedicated to bitching about celebrities for… bitching about celebrities. all that sanctimony must be terribly rewarding.

  17. Eve says:

    @ FakeJohnLocke:

    Err…I don’t hate Paltrow. I really mean this.

    If anything, I find risible that she seems to believe she can do everything. I do not like her as an actress, but having her in a film isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. I do, however, think that many other actresses are a way better than her and should be playing these parts (that are given to her) instead.

  18. Annie says:

    LOL she should name it “Country Album For Peasants” that has a ring to it.

  19. futureperfect says:

    @FakeJohnLocke — it’s not hate, it’s self-preservation. Too much exposure to Goop is like going into a sauna with a Guinness/red wine pipe bomb.

  20. *Roxy* says:

    I don’t hate her. It just seems to me that Goop ventures in the areas where she doesn’t fit.

  21. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @Eve

    Who are these better actresses you speak of? There are handful, sure. All the usual suspects, Winslet, Blanchette, Amy Adams, a few others. But the current generation of actors and actresses in the 20-40 age bracket are appallingly bad. She’s pretty decent by the standards of today. If you can name 20 that are certainly better, I’ll be surprised. BTW more likable or popular does not count as “better.”

  22. PrettyTarheel says:

    @FakeJohnLocke:
    I’m sure she appreciates your defense.
    However, you’re trolling a site named “Celebitchy.” What on earth did you expect?
    For the record, I think Gwyneth is an excellent actress. I’m just not a fan of the singing career OR the cooking adventures. They are her hobbies, but she wants to be treated as a legitimate expert in her hobbies because she can fund a cookbook or is famous enough to sing a few songs in a movie. If an unknown had her voice, she would have never been cast as “Country Strong.” Hellz, no.
    To give you a comparison-I’m a commercial development exec for a company whose name you probably know. This is my profession, and I’m good at it. I also knit in my spare time. Guess which one I expect people to consider legitimate, and which one I do for relaxation and entertainment? Part of my Christmas presents to the fam this year were homemade scarves, and everyone loved them, but I didn’t run out and write a book on how to please everyone by making your own gifts. That’s why Gwyneth invites ridicule.

  23. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @PrettyTarheel

    I don’t really see that GP positions herself as an “expert.” Rather, that seems like hyperbole so as to more easily assail her venturing into any territory beyond acting. I mean, it just seems like crap she is getting involved in that she enjoys and is interesting to her. She gets jobs singing and acting, she has a web site for her home goddess BS. You can critique her skill at these things, which I have no problem with, but I don’t see how you can rail against her initiative to get these things happening. A lot of people talk the talk but never walk the walk. Meanwhile, she’s doing things and putting her a@@ out there for others to critique. I’m not saying she’s great at all these things, only that I admire that she doesn’t sit on her a@@ in Bel Air or whatever, flipping through catalogs.

    As far as her being an “actress” and therefore not qualified to other things such as “food” or “singing,” that seems like a bunch of crap to me. There are in fact a lot of people in this world who are multi-faceted and multi-talented. There are a lot of people who are good at many things. You are free to like or not like anything she does, whether it is acting or singing or whatever. I really don’t care about that, to each his own. But to reject out of hand her freedom to give a try at whatever floats her boat seems silly to me. If you told me that you were starting a boutique to sell your knitting, I would “that’s great!” and not “bah, you’re a commercial development exec, what are you thinking.” Whether or not you are good at it or will be successful at it, who cares. Like I said, it’s better than sitting around doing nothing.

    It just seems to me like so much of the attack that is mounted against GP is based on this presumption about her attitudes and right to do what she feels like doing. The critiquing is fine, it really is. The vitriol – I don’t get that part.

    But carry on, I’m not telling anybody what to do at the destination for celebrity bitching. I’m just wondering about it out loud.

  24. Eve says:

    @ FakeJohnLocke:

    BTW more likable or popular does not count as “better.”

    Oh, please. Do not try to patronize me or suggest that I don’t know the difference. Spare me of the poor attempt at snark.

    Frankly, I don’t really have to name every single one of the actresses I think are better than her (to make a point, I mean). Just like I think she isn’t good enough for the roles she’s given, you’ll have a thing or two to say about the ones I find great. I really don’t get why people, when they hear/read an opinion that is different than theirs, usually come up with “please, do tell who you find great”.

    It’s called a personal opinion: I don’t like her acting. I’m not even going to suggest she got where she is now because of her parents since there are others just like her (whose acting isn’t good enough) who don’t have famous or influent parents.

    But carry on, I’m not telling anybody what to do at the destination for celebrity bitching.

    Yes, you are. Your first comment actually had a valid point, now you’re just trolling.

  25. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @Eve

    >>Frankly, I don’t really have to name every single one of the actresses I think are better than her (to make a point, I mean). Just like I think she isn’t good enough for the roles she’s given, you’ll have a thing or two to say about the ones I find great

    You say she doesn’t deserve the roles she gets, that there are way better actresses. I say this is a terrible generation of actors, as far as real acting talent goes. GP is pretty good, nothing great. But I’m just curious as to who the better actresses are in the under 40 bracket. I see very few. I’m not trying to bait you into something to attack you. I’m just curious because I don’t count more than half a dozen truly good actresses in that age range. GP is right up there in the average actress category which is why when it comes to roles, why not?

  26. MarenGermany says:

    HER GUITAR IS NOT PLUGGED IN in the clip of her singing that country strong song. way to fake that shit.
    making it look like you can play when actually there are 15 back up guitar players in the shadow behind.
    i HATE it when singers do that.
    As a trained musician I feel soooooooooo offended by that shit!

  27. jinni says:

    I don’t see how being half-Jewish translate to not being country. There are sizable Jewish communities in the south; Jews don’t just live on the coasts. Are country singers only allowed to be of Scots-Irish or Anglo-Saxon descent? There are plenty of country singers from other places than the southern US/Delta region ex. Shania Twain and Keith Urban. Also, most country singers are bottled-blondes, except they tend to have big, curling-iron created curls instead of super straight hair. I’m not saying you have no right to dislike her I just found some of your reasons for why she isn’t “country” weird.

    I don’t personally believe that she is really into country music/southern culture, but only because throughout her career she’s talked smack about the US and built her image on being an elitist, bougie, Vouge mag cover darling, Grace Kelly wannabe.

  28. *Roxy* says:

    So no more Goop bitching? 🙁

  29. mln76 says:

    @FakeJohnLocke…I just don’t think you get it. I actually used to be a fan. She hasn’t stopped with this media blitz since the promotions for her supporting role in Iron Man 2 last Memorial Day she’s overexposed. Was it really necessary for her to perform at 3 award shows last year considering she isn’t really that good of a singer and wasn’t nominated for anything??? On the acting front she isn’t a great, iconic actress, she’s always been one of those actresses that came across as likable with a somewhat limited range but she’s made choices which have turned off the public plus she didn’t deserve to win that Oscar over Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth. It’s not that she is an actress so she shouldn’t talk about food and decor etc…It’s that in talking about these things she’s exposed the public to her values. She probably isn’t very different from a lot of uber-wealthy people but she’s put these opinions out there for the general public to consume. If she is concerned about people’s judgement she should start developing her character a bit or give the public a break.

  30. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @roxy

    >>So no more Goop bitching?

    No, sorry, that is so 2000late

  31. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @mln

    >>She probably isn’t very different from a lot of uber-wealthy people but she’s put these opinions out there for the general public to consume.

    I don’t know what that means. What are uber-wealthy people like?

    >>If she is concerned about people’s judgement she should start developing her character a bit or give the public a break.

    What if she isn’t concerned about about “peoples’ judgment?” What if she’s just doing what she feels like doing?

    You’re right, I don’t get it, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing in this case.

  32. gamblea says:

    Is the guitar a prop? It’s an unusual way to play it?

  33. the original bellaluna says:

    @ FakeJohnLocke – Love your handle (Lost!), but not your point of view. If I met her in person, the only thing I would deign to tell her is she is over-exposed and she needs to shut her mouth. No fawning from me!

    If the uber-wealthy are like her, I’m grateful they don’t put themselves out there to perpetuate the “snot myth” (Donald Trump excluded, natch – he’s also obnoxious). Which is obviously not a myth when it comes to Gwyn.

  34. RHONYC says:

    Kaiser, i love how you all post Brad’s exes nest to Angie’s face each & everytime juuuuust to show how much more supremely better looking she is than all of them. 😆

  35. jenni says:

    @jinni ITA re being Jewish. (and bottle blonde!) there are a significant amount of Southern born and bred Jews. Being Jewish (or anything not-Christian) does not cancel out being country.
    But I do hope GP has lost interest in recording an album. The instant funding thing irritates a lot of people who have worked a lifetime on their music and would leap at he chance to be on a label for a pittance of what Paltrow was offered.

  36. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @mln76

    Actually, I’m not super-interested in GP and this whole thread to me isn’t really about GP at all. But whatevs.

    As far as the HP article goes, yes, Goop is her own worst enemy when it comes to PR. She is remarkably unaware of how people react to her blathering about herself. That much I do get. She should just shut up and do her thing and Gwyneth Paltrow should stop talking about Gwyneth Platrow.

    But, that’s a different matter entirely than the stuff she actually cranks out. I do respect her work ethic. I figure she’s at least “pretty good” at many of things she tries her hand at. Her Q factor should not entirely obliterate acknowledging that, IMO.

    If she would shut up and be more of a mensch, I’m sure her problems would fade by half.

  37. futureperfect says:

    @FJL “If she would shut up and be more of a mensch, I’m sure her problems would fade by half.”

    Or maybe by two halves. Her talents definitely don’t include PR.

  38. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @futureperfect

    Finally, a little love lol.

  39. Mary Jane says:

    I am SO TIRED of Goopy. She does the “Jennifer Aniston” (untalented, average-looking, sad, loner) better than JA!
    We have to get these two together…

  40. mln76 says:

    @FJL what exactly does she ‘crank out’ that is good…Did you see Country Strong?? I had the misfortune of being dragged to the movie theater and let me tell you it wasn’t quality stuff. As for her singing it’s not all that good her Oscar performance was sad. I’ll give her credit for being moderately good at some of her appearances on Jimmy Fallon but when she hosted SNL the show was also not that good(at least the sketches I saw on the internet). I haven’t watched Glee so I can’t comment on that except to say WTF told her she could sing an Adele song.

  41. kazoo says:

    lmao @ someone writing essays on goop.

    and really, there’s no need for the “fake” in your name, john locke.

  42. FakeJohnLocke says:

    @kazoo

    Thank you for your concern, I will attend to this matter immediately.

    Now go get your shine box.

  43. PrettyTarheel says:

    @ Mary Jane:
    They could tell Brad Pitt stories, discuss their gym routines, and review the best place to get a blowout around the world. Then Gwyneth could share her hangover cure with Jen, since Jen spends a lot of time drinking in Mexico, and Jen could tell Gwyneth what John Mayer was like in bed so Gwyneth can get tips for her time with Chris.
    The fanfic would just write itself if those two became close friends.

    I’m sorry, that was probably more hate for Gwyneth, with some JA bashing thrown in. I’m in the wrong place for that…

  44. kasper says:

    @PrettyTarheel Jen can share with Goopy “the secret.”

    No not that secret — Jen tried it for like a year, but buying a house that Brad would buy, filling it with furniture he would want, and ordering clothes that he would wear (beige of course) to put them in the master bedroom closet, awaiting his return, did not work out the way Oprah promised it would. It creeped Brad out a bit, actually. That and the stalking.

    The other secret — how to get the peasants to feel sorry for you rather than mock you for your smug, teenaged private schoolgirl blathering — is what Jen will share with old Goopster. Strangely the technique for this secret is the same as the other secret, but it works for different reasons, of course.

  45. WhiteNoise says:

    @FakeJohnLocke – “If she would shut up and be more of a mensch, I’m sure her problems would fade by half.”

    ^^This. At the root of all the negativity towards her is her really unfortunate habit of talking about herself in a way that comes across as if she is (a) awed by her own brilliance and versatility, and (b) is inviting us all in to partake in that awe.

  46. PrettyTarheel says:

    @kasper-LOL. Like I said, it writes itself! I’m serious…this is like a cartoon series in the making. Where’s Seth MacFarlane when I need him?

  47. whybenice says:

    I looked up Country Strong — production budget was $15M and it made $20M. It was buried in January releases, a typical graveyard for bad movies, which it proved to be. Can’t see where Goop’s got a fan base worth of $1M to sign. Bless her, she’s desperately trying to appeal to us poor, unwashed, slovenly masses. Trouble is, I don’t think most of us want her.

  48. Louise says:

    The promotion of Country Strong was really weird. So much of the publicity and appearances were done in November and almost none in January the movie was released.

    Did Gwyneth actually say she wanted to do a country album? I thought the media was saying that. She never had interest in country. She always talks about rap and pop music has her favorite genres.

  49. poppy says:

    as it becomes more obvious to her nobody wants to watch her act the more desperate she becomes. she’ll screw herself out of cook-booking, life-styling, and singing once she gets into the full swing of those pursuits; she won’t keep her mouth shut.
    she has said often how she is an actor, not anything else. for years. never wanted to be rich and famous or a celebrity. only wanted to act. when asked if she’d ever duet with madonna a few years back she said no because “i don’t think the acting/recording thing really works”. her words.

    not only is she an insufferable, condescending, half-wit of privilege, she’s a flaming hypocrite.
    all her new efforts are diversions from how very far she’s fallen off her perch that SHE EARNED WITHOUT THE HELP OF ANYONE.
    she needs these diversions to keep her precious ego inflated; i don’t want to have anything to do with them or read about it or hear her on npr or see her plastered everywhere. hard to avoid her.

    for someone that claims to be so private how is it possible to know almost every single detail of her fabulous life?

    i don’t have a problem embracing my dislike for an entitled twat that would park her suv mercedes on the sidewalk while touting that suv drivers support terrorism. she sucks.

    you don’t get the vitriol and should consider yourself fortunate not to have paid any attention to her throughout her career or been suffocated by the current media marketing of goop. you are lucky.

    no comments on how she is jacking her face? every time she has a little break she comes back looking more waxen and plastic and pulled so tight her eyes are running away from each other.

  50. kasper says:

    @ poppy. she will always be able to keep herself busy with “potential” cook-books, and “potential” albums and “potential” movies. Goopy just loves potential. When she hears the word “potential” she just goops herself… in her sauna, with a pint of guinness and a bottle of red wine in each hand, while her favourite fish monger is on his knees spoon feeding caviar down her gullet and her new BFF Jennifer Aniston tells her the PR secret.

  51. kasper says:

    @ Louise: “she never had interest in country. She always talks about rap and pop music as her favorite genres.”

    OMG! I now have this image of Goopy making a rap album, kicking it old school in Hammer pants. The album will be called “The Straight Goop: Keeping It Real.” The best thing since Vanilla Ice.

  52. myTbean says:

    You know… I think this woman just needs a new PR person and some strict management in a different – I dunno – dedicated? direction. It’s the mixed vibe that’s throwing it all off. Her voice is decent. Her stage presence is not so bad. It’s just the silver spoon image that’s really crunching her attempted musician vibe.

    I have to say tho – I just closed one eye and watched the Glee clip – and it’s the first time I’ve actually seen her play a character that does anything but stand there and deliver lines in a monotone breathy voice. Yeah – she looks a little physically stiff and the delivery is almost awkward – but, it is different for her so, I give her that.

    It’d be tough for her to shuck the goopy image tho. She’d have to move into a trailer park, marry Jesse James and get really fat – for a while – for people to see her as the accessible person I think she’s trying to be.

  53. Micki says:

    I simply LOVED this talk ladies!!
    Personaly I find Goopy indiferent actress and there was a question which one from generation 30-40 is better.
    My preferences: Charlise Theron, Jennifer Connelly, Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Weisz.I think they always deliver.

  54. Nikki Girl says:

    That Glee clip is hideous. Then again, I don’t get the whole Glee thing whatsoever.

  55. S says:

    I despise Glee. That is all.

  56. KLO says:

    The Glee clip was so funny. Gwynnie is totally wooden next to the blonde background girl who is SO luscious.

    But generally I can’t hate G, i think she’s nice and just living her life. I used to love her in the nineties movies, she isn’t talentless. The Great Expectations remake was awesome.
    But I never got why people wanted to always compare her to Grace Kelly, she is nothing like her.
