Anne Hathaway in McQueen at the ‘One Day’ premiere: adorable or blah?

fp_7708346_oneday_premiere_ram_11_34

Last night was the big NYC premiere of One Day, that Anne Hathaway-Jim Sturgess film that I’m worried about. I’m worried about Anne’s wonky accent, I’m worried that The Pillow-Weeper isn’t going to be good enough to play Dexter, I’m worried that this movie seems to be getting dumped in the dead of August, where movies go to die. Maybe it’s not such a bad thing – I read the book, and I’m not as in love with the story as some people, so maybe Anne and Jim and everyone involved are just trying to get through minimal film promotion with as little attention as possible.

As for Anne’s dress… it’s McQueen. It’s pretty and it says “fun party frock”. Look at how tiny her little waist is! She wasn’t always this skinny – they say that she’s been training really hard for The Dark Knight Rises, so this is probably the most fit she’s ever been. To me, she doesn’t really look “pulled together” but I suspect she just threw this on in between her Catwoman film schedule. Sidenote: did you hear that Catwoman/Selina Kyle has “a history of abuse and works as a stripper and is also a pickpocket”? Anne Hathaway as a stripper… interesting.

As for Jim “Pillow Weeper” Sturgess… he looks good. Not particularly masculine or heartthrobby or anything, but he looks presentable and attractive. The itty-bitty bangs trauma still kills me, though. As do his weepy eyes. Also: I added a photo of Patricia Clarkson – she plays Jim/Dexter’s mother in the film.

Would you like the trailer for One Day again? Here you go!

could Jim Sturgess look any more like Paul McCartney???

  2. gee says:

The ity bity bangs are really bad. Distractingly bad.

  3. womanfromthenorth says:

    I love it, lovely

  4. Samigirl says:

I think Anne looks fab. Not over or under dressed. Just perfect. Her accent is…not great. The thing that most excites me about this movie is the “New music by Elvis Costello!” Seriously. I <3 the book…I don’t know if I’ll <3 the movie.

  5. Lynnie says:

It’s the hair. Anybody else tired of the “undone” hair? So many beautiful women get all dolled up in perfect dresses/shoes/accessories and then wreck the whole damn thing with long, limp, messy hair.

  6. almond says:

Gorgeous dress, I would wear it in a heartbeat, but I agree with whoever said that her hair is limp and messy and does not go at all with the rest of the look. She has strong features, but most of the time they work for her and she looks striking. She looks as if she’s in great physical shape, too.

  7. kate says:

    She has zero sexappeal. Sorry.

  8. Delta Juliet says:

Thank you @ ann! I was just thinking the same thing!

  9. Kevin says:

Ann has tons of sex appeal. Sorry

  10. pinns says:

If she’s been training really hard, where is her muscle tone? Dieting really hard for her costume, more like. Patricia Clarkson has more defined upper arms than Anne in these photos!

I yearn for the day an actress actually puts on some muscles for their “action” role, but it never happens these days. Angie in Salt, Zoe in that other post about Columbiana, Naomi Watts in just about anything, they bleat about their emancipated “tough women” parts but it’s usually just wearing a skin-tight costume designed to titillate 14 year old boys! They can’t save the world/get the bad guys if they look like you could snap them like a twig, sheesh.

Give me Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2 any day!! OMG, now there was perfect casting with an actress who ‘trained’ properly and gave it her all.

Rant over, gosh I’m grumpy today.

Pretty dress – heretical accent! There must be hundreds of doughy, plain-looking northern actresses they could have chosen, and they chose AH. I’m beginning to think her agent is deliberately trying to have her horribly miscast (the other C-word) to prove she’s got “range”.

And it’s not Little Englander flag-waving – I’d be the first to admit Renee Zellweger nailed Bridget Jones.

  12. Pyewacket says:

    Cute dress. Terrible looking movie.

  13. Angelina says:

I LOVE the dress! She looks beautiful apart from her hair…just a bit too messy.

  14. mia girl says:

I like the dress. Anne’s a bit too skinny IMO. But her stylist Rachel Zoe is proabaly thrilled.

As for One Day…why are they marketing this movie like a light hearted rom-com? I hope that the movie will deliver beyond what this trailer says.

  15. tapioca says:

@pinns: If can stomach Wesley Snipes, Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel in the same movie – Blade Trinity – then check it out for the latter’s insane gym-honed body.

  16. tina says:

I swear, I thought Ann Hathaway was standing there with KD Lang!

  17. Sigh. says:

    @ pinns:

At the risk of being ostracized on a *decidedly* PRO-Brangelina/”She can do know wrong” board, I think Jolie’s (Wanted, Salt) and Saldana’s (Losers, Columbiana) rail-thinness are total distractions to me, too. Especially when up against men clearly twice their weight and at least a foot taller. Move over on the grumpy bench, I guess…

KILL BILL has excellent fighting with women with some meat on their bones! No drag queen muscle-bound types, either.

Anyone else a little disappointed that Kyle has to be a stripper of all things? She’s has many origin stories, but why the stripper one (and Frank Miller rewrote her as an abused hooker, so Nolan is not alone on this)? They are DETERMINED to *make* Hathaway sexy, huh? We’ll see…

  18. TQB says:

Yeah, it’s the hair. The dress is super cute.

  19. LadyJane says:

A bit wintery. But she always gets the seasons wrong.

  20. Ahem says:

I feel like she should be aware of the skeptics and try to promote herself as a sexy catwoman….like seriously enough with the princess frumpy crap.

i know it’s another film she’s promoting but…lol COME ON i have never seen her and thought, wow she is sexy. she needs to work on that.

  21. Katie says:

I love Anne Hathaway. I think her style is (mostly) wonderful, and she always looks so real and approachable.

It took me a minute to like the waist on the dress, but I think it just looked weird to me for a bit because everything is high-waisted right now. Now that I’m over it, I love the detailing and it looks very comfortable and well-fitting. Good choice, Anne.

  22. danielle says:

    adorable

  23. ZenB!tch says:

Goodness, that girl is translucent! Normally, it works for her but seeing her in shorty-shorts on the Catwoman set (HA!) freaked me out.

  24. Annie says:

    Gorgeous!

  25. Onyx XV says:

I do believe that’s the first McQueen dress I’ve seen that I actually thought was attractive. His designs are usually so hideously fugly. (RIP).

This movie will bomb. It looks absolutely, positively awful. Do we really need more corny romances? I vote no.

  26. Heatheradair says:

So, maybe it’s because I’ve been watching so many Pixiwoo makeup tutorials lately and I’m hyper-attuned to technique right now — BUT — why are we not doing some contouring around her nose? A little shadow/bronzer, something down the sides would really it look less like it takes up her whole face. that’s my primary complaint. The dress is pretty, the shoes are pretty, I don’t even mind the hair….

  27. lee says:

yeah, Anne looks meh and i agree with LadyJane that the dress seems too wintery.

but seriously, how good does Patricia Clarkson look??

  28. Bee says:

What do you defined as “pulled together”? Looking at the make-up, bag, hair, shoes. I’d say she looks pulled together to me.

  29. Ramona Q says:

I don’t say this often, but Ann needs a nose job. And she knows it, but she’s really trying the “unclassic beauty” thing. It’s not working Ann, you look like an awkward librarian, and you know it.

  30. Callumna says:

    Stripper? What. In. The. Hell.

Hollywood having a writer’s strike again?

This thing looks all kinds of stupid. Ruined by some writer with the mind of a 13 year old. Anne Hathaway was very good as a princess once but she’s grown up to not be movie material. She ruined Get Smart for me and Agent 99 was very cool but a lot less iconic than Catwoman.

  31. Ashley says:

Unless she manages to pull out an uncommonly earth-shattering performance in Batman, I will never buy her as a Catwoman-type persona. They should have cast someone more ‘hard’.

  32. Becky says:

I’m not a fan of Anne Hathaway, but why should she have to get a nose job? She has a larger than average nose…so what? She’s still attractive (on a side note, I wish I had her boobs-they’re definitely her best feature). I don’t think she’s the best actress out there, but her nose certainly doesn’t seem to have gotten in her way.

“One Day” looks lousy. I really enjoyed the book, but the movie looks silly. Physically, I think Anne Hathaway was well cast-I can completely see her as Emma. In terms of Jim Sturgess-meh. He doesn’t fit my mental picture of Dex at all. I was thinking more Jude Law although at this point he would be too old to play Dex in his twenties. If Jude were 10 years younger he would be perfect in the role.
