Anne Hathaway in white McQueen: bridal doily or gorgeous?

one_day_prem_05_wenn3479522

These are some new photos of the London premiere of One Day, the romantic-dramedy that I didn’t hate (but everyone else did). Go here for my review – I thought Jim “Pillow Weeper” Sturgess was solid and weepy, and Anne Hathaway was fine-to-okay, with her accent going wonky at times. I also read the book, which increased my enjoyment of the film – I knew what was going to happen, and I appreciated how faithfully they adapted the book for the screen. The movie didn’t do very well in its opening weekend, but I suspect that it will be a fine rental for many ladies, and at some point, it will end up on endless repeats on Oxygen or Lifetime.

As for the premiere, Annie wore head-to-toe McQueen – she also wore McQueen for the NYC premiere too. The dress is McQueen Resort 2012, and she accessorized with “a white jaw skull clutch and hazelnut whipstitch peep-toes.” I like the dress, I like the hair, I like the makeup. It’s a win for Annie, in my opinion, although one of my minor peeves is that she wears white much, much too often. And on Anne, all of that white often looks bridal or (dare I say) slightly corpsey, because she’s so pale. Don’t get me wrong, I like that Anne is pale and that she doesn’t fake-bake or anything. But she does tend to look washed out in white. Still, I like this dress on her. It’s like a fancy doily, but a really pretty, well-cut doily.

I don’t even want to talk about the Pillow-Weeper and his itty-bitty bangs trauma.

In my review of the film, I mentioned how much I love Romola Garai, and I was pleased to hear from other Romola fans out there – soon there will be more. She can act her ass off, and she’s gorgeous. Unfortunately, WENN labeled Romola as “Guest”. DUDE. She’s one of the best actresses in the UK! She’s on The Hour, one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time (are you watching?!?). Here’s pretty Romola (who should have played Emma in One Day):

And for some reason, Peaches Geldof was also at the premiere. WENN labeled her correctly, which speaks volumes about today’s celebrity culture. Peaches is WAY overdressed too. It’s not your movie, Peaches. No reason to wear a full-on gown.

I like the dress/styling as well. Hell-to-the-NO on the shoes.

  2. UnAttributableSpoon says:

I really like the dress, but I think the length is a bit awkward. Either be floor-length or knee-length, not in between.

That may just be my bias, because I have short legs and cannot pull off anything longer than just below my knees^.^

#1-Stubbylove: I agree with you on the shoes! Not the right color at all!

  3. BigHair&Pearls says:

Love, love love the slash-neck. For once, I actually like something Hathaway’s wearing. Seeing Peaches Geldof’s pie-face (not delicious pie at that!)ruined it for me though!

  4. ef says:

Romola Garai is one of the best actress of her generation, both in UK and in US. She played different characters in theater, on TV and in movies. I wish Joe Wright went with her for Pride & Prejudice instead of Keira. BTW she was the best Emma I’ve seen. And she was with Fassy in Angel. LOL

  5. bunny says:

I agree, Romola Garai is an awesome actress… she blows Anne Hathaway, Kiera Knightly out of the water. She has so much range.

Rosamund Pike is another actress who should be bigger than she is.

  6. Moi says:

    Love the dress, love her.

  7. dread pirate cuervo says:

That’s probably as close to the wedding dress I want as I’ve seen since all I can find is giant poofy pillows, which is overkill when you’re only having 40 people. Peaches has been raiding Gaga’s closet, yes? & swoooooon, over Jim Sturgess & his itty-bitty bang trauma. I just love him.

  8. sierra says:

I’m reading that book one day and I have to say I don’t enjoy t all that much. The protagonists are so irritating and vapid. I cannot stand Emma at all. She bugs the he’ll out of me it’s made worse by the fact that I picture Anne Hathaway in the main role with her terrible accent. Also the guy is so annoying and uninteresting. I would rather hear about emmas life then his. Overall don’t get the hype for this book

  9. meilamon says:

The dress is nice, but she will never be gorgeous, no matter what she wears.

  10. madison says:

Pretty dress she looks really good, but tan colored shoes should have been another color.

  11. TQB says:

It’s gorgeous, and I actually like the shoes – they make the dress non-bridal and fun.

@Dread Pirate – try JCrew or a dress shop that sells Nicole Miller gowns. Non-pillow options exist!

  12. Minx2 says:

I just adore Ramola Garai.. she was fantastic in Emma and I just watched Glorious39 – she’s soo beautiful in it. Personally, I think that Keira Knightley is overrated.

  13. Sheigh says:

Love the dress, but definitely not her head, I just simply want to cut it!
And I agree with comments about Romola Garai too!

  14. Cheyenne says:

    Right dress, wrong shoes.

  15. Nymeria says:

*coughs delicately* Does anyone else notice the hint of buttcrack in picture no. 3?

  16. gee says:

@Dread Pirate and TQB: Jcrew has some really pretty non pillow dresses! They used to have one very similar to this actually.

  17. Ron says:

Love the dress. But it looks like she took the dress to the office and forgot her shoes and accessories and just went with what she already had on. WTF?

  18. Joanna says:

    Bridal doily.

  19. joan of snark says:

has she had a nose job recently? she looks different. did she get the tip shaved down?

  20. Bermuda Blues says:

Anne Hathaway is, for me, played out. I’ve tired of her. She’s been all over the place. As her star has been on the rise, I’ve found myself exasperated by her. I wouldn’t mind if she went away for a while.

Also – her facial expressions are starting to look like Winona Ryder’s uglier little sister.

  21. original kate says:

anne hathaway bugs the crap out of me. something about her just screams “bitch.”

  22. GossipVixen says:

@Nymeria – I saw that too! Kind of ruins the dress a bit I think. Didn’t think it was so transparent.

I actually do like the dress – I think it’s quite pretty. Agree with those that said that hem needs a bit of work – I guess it’s tea-length, but I’d rather it be a few inches shorter.

As for Anne herself – pass. She bugs me.

  23. Emily says:

I’ve got similar colouring to Anne, and I think she should try ivory and cream instead of white. Far less corpsey.

  24. Micah says:

    Love the dress.

  25. taxi says:

Plus for the dress, but it isn’t styled properly & Anne makes it look very boring. Needs different shoes & either a nude slip, a blonde or a waxed V. Also needs a more sophisticated hairdo than the “let it all just hang on my shoulder” thing. The dress is very retro, when hair was styled & structured. Maybe Annie is trying to use her hair like an old fur stole, with the heads & tails on like they wore in the ’40s?

  26. Maureen says:

I love Anne Hathaway, I can’t believe so many of you don’t like her. I think she’s charming and seems down to earth. I think she looks beautiful. Love the hair and dress. At first I thought the shoe color was kinda an odd choice but its grown on me, its chic. Haven’t seen the movie or read the book, but it got a good review in People. I’ll probably wait till its on HBO.

  27. Lindy says:

I love me some Anne, y’all. She can do no wrong in my book and her regal, statuesque figure looks great in that dress!

  28. Denise says:

She is like the Tracy Flick of actresses of her generation.

  29. size says:

Anne Hathaway’s accent is always terrible.

Do you remember “becoming Jane” [2007]
In that movie, her english accent was so terrible.
You can see she wasnt working hard on her accent.

Renee zellweger, on the otherhad, her accent on Brigit jones diary (sp???) was so amazing!!

  30. Reece says:

    A pretty doily.
It’s kinda washed out by the cameras.

    Why is Peaches Geldof?

  31. WOM says:

Of the three dresses, I like Peaches Geldof’s best of all. Of the three women, I like Geldof the least of all.

  32. lisa says:

    Dress yes…

    Shoes.. no

I just could never get Anne. She reminds me of Sarah Jessica Parker in the way she talks. They both always make everything they are in or do seem as if it is the greatest thing ever. I just can’t put it in the proper words. Sarah Jessica does that in her interviews and it just rubs me a funny way. Same with Anne. I always get the feeling of TRYING too hard.

Maybe too over exuberant all the time. I don’t know how to explain it..

  33. jess says:

I used to hate her nearly as much as Katherine Heigl, but I just saw the biggest fan interview on popsugar.com, she was really sweet and cool. But she doesn’t have the sex appeal, I can never picture her consummating passionate love with any of her onscreen partners. Why she keeps getting casted I have no idea.

  34. crtb says:

The shoes are horrible in both style and color.

  35. ZenB!tch says:

If Anne and Romala switched dresses they would both look great – assuming Romala did not also take Anne’s horrid 70s shoes!

  36. sauvage says:

Romola Garai was great in ‘Vanity Fair’ a few years back. And – dare I say that I actually rented the film? – uhm, she was also good in ‘Dirty Dancing 2’. She, her acting. The film as a whole though… Uhm.

  37. bugsy says:

I love it! I want to wear it! Oh to have money growing on trees. Also, I freakin love her hair. Been trying to grow mine out for years (always get bored. Pixie cut this. A-line that.). This gives me new inspiration. I know I’m gushing, but look! It’s so thick and shiny! Mine is the same color. And since I had my daughter, it’s gone from stick straight to wavy. Must copy these photos to remind myself of what a few more months can acheive…

  38. normades says:

I join others in the Anne Hathaway hate club. I have disliked her ever since she threw her ex under a bus and played the victim card. She was with him for 4 years! Either she is stupidly naive or she turned a blind eye. Plus he spent most that money ON HER and trying to keep up with HER lifestyle.

She has no style of her own, no sex appeal and is generally overrated as an actress.

  39. original kate says:

“She is like the Tracy Flick of actresses of her generation.”

    this, exactly.

  40. Mimi says:

Why do you call him “Pillow Weeper”?

  41. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Tracy Flick is so dead on, I don’t even know what to do with myself. Her spot on Conan was just sad.

  42. mimi says:

I’m sorry, but Anne looks like a sheep.

  43. jemshoes says:

Anne DOES wear a lot of white! The dress looks a little too much like a doily (or lacy curtains) and the shoes look like wooden clogs when worn with such a delicate-looking frock. She’s looked better. 🙂

  44. Lacey Nordgren says:

Really i love the kids and their angel dresses.
