Julianne Moore’s Fall 2011 Talbots ads: gorgeous, classic, or boring?

mooretalbots1

Julianne Moore stars as the face of Talbots Fall 2011 line, and she looks ethereally gorgeous and (quite frankly) great in these particular adverts that feature a smart trench coat and a 1940s-styled blazer/pants combo. I never cease to be amazed at the fact that Julianne is 51-years old, and Kaiser wanted me to mention the striking difference between this campaign and the Ann Taylor Fall 2001 campaign starring Demi Moore, who is one year younger than Julianne but far more tweaked in a far-off, Fem-bot sort of way. Has Julianne even had any work done at all? If so, it’s very, very subtle, but I don’t think that anyone has even whispered a hint of suspicion that she’s less than natural and has done anything more than merely stay out of the sun.

However wonderful Julianne might look in this campaign, I still find it vaguely amusing that any retailer was willing to cast aside Julianne’s own dreadful sense of style on the red carpet to hire her as a spokesmodel. Who could forget the bright pink monstrosity, the hideous two-toned Lanvin, or the peach-pink bridesmaid’s dress, all favored by Julianne herseld in the name of fashion? Not to mention that even Tom Ford has made Julianne look like hell when he dresses her. Velvet eveningwear with a huge ass bow, really? Poor Julianne.

By the way, Julianne also starred in Talbots Spring 2011 campaign as well. Kaiser, CB, and I all agree that they’re far too cutesy for the Talbots demographic or, basically, anyone over the age of 25. I do like the white sweater and gold skirt though.

Very retro, but I think they are beautiful and I love the clothes. They look like classic fall to me.

  2. Emily says:

I don’t think she’s had any work done. The sun is terribly damaging on your skin, I think she’s just not tanned in a long time. I like the photo shoots, but I think in the autumn one, she’s verging on corpsey in a few shots.

  3. DoMaJoReMc says:

That second picture with the tweed suit brought back so many memories of shopping for back to school clothes! This is classic! She looks beautiful!

And I agree about not thinking she has any work done. Staying out of the sun can do WONDERS for your skin. Jaycee Dugard even mentioned to Diane Sawyer in her interview that that’s why she is still so youthful looking.

  4. brin says:

    Classic and lovely!

  5. SolitaryAngel says:

She’s a beautiful woman. I love the retro suit in the second pic! The biggest difference in these ads and Demi’s is that you don’t need binoculars to see that this is JM. She isn’t afraid to have closeups done.

Demi’s vanity is her downfall. If she had allowed herself to age gracefully, she may have looked as good as JM, imho.

  6. Rose says:

What the photoshop hell is this? In half these pictures she doesn’t even resemble herself!

  7. teehee says:

I love them red shoes. I saw a pair of rich auburn shoes before, and have been desiring them ever since— every fall and winter, I catch a glimpse of a pair – or even a nice dark caramel or camel shade- and it just kills me. They are so beautiful… 😛
I got to save me up for a pair and hunt them down!

  8. Maritza says:

She looks gorgeous but why on earth do they insist on erasing all facial lines.

  9. lucy2 says:

    Beautiful woman, beautiful photos.
I don’t think she’s had anything done either – obviously the ads are smoothed out a bit with photoshop as all are, but she really does look terrific.

  10. Sarah Bellum says:

I think having pale skin and red hair necessitated that she not spend tons of time in the sun without sunscreen. Now that she is 51 her skin is thanking her for it.

  11. Cherry says:

@Rose I must agree with you. I, too, think Julianne is a beautiful woman who ages well, but this photoshop hell doesn’t do her one bit of justice.

‘I don’t think that anyone has even whispered a hint of suspicion that she’s less than natural and has done anything more than merely stay out of the sun.’ That may be, but for some reason the good people at Talbot decided that they had to smooth every line in her face out up to the point that she looks like some random 20-year old model. The close-up pics (the bottom one!) are especially bad. If that’s what they were looking for, then why hire Julianne Moore, who’s an extremely well preserved 50 year old, but a 50 year old nonetheless. Shame.

  12. Elizabeth says:

    @ Sarah
I am fair skinned (but brunette) and had two sisters who loved the sun and tanning outdoors – no sunscreen, nothing when we were growing up (’70’s, ’80’s). I stayed out of the sun, didn’t like the heat. Guess who looks youngest now!

  13. zephyr says:

    The clothes are dull.
Julianne looks lovely in some shots and vacant & vapid in others.

  14. Sloane Wyatt says:

Classic, wearable clothes – how refreshing!

The photo shopping is another matter entirely. Mz. Moore deserves to have a bit of her real face show in the ads!

  15. Rose says:

Exactly Cherry, she’s a fabulous looking woman, so why photoshop her into a totally different and considerably younger person?

  16. SarahS says:

I love her. I truly do. So it pains me to ask, why can’t she either smile or close her damn mouth? Taken one at a time, the pics are lovely. Taken one after another, I have to wonder if she had a wicked sinus infection or something.

  17. NYC_girl says:

I love everything, and would buy it all if I weren’t unemployed. : (

  18. ladybert62 says:

    I like the clothes

I dont like her very much and in most of these pictures with her eyes raised towards the heavens – she looks silly – drugged out even.

    Looks photoshopped to me.

  19. Sue says:

The first 2 pictures look really good the other are a bit to Photoshop for me but still nothing compared to Demi’s Ad’s which didn’t look like her before the Photoshop and look even worst after it. I couldn’t even look at Demi’s Ad’s without think what the f did she do to herself they were just unwatchable.

  20. These are great photos, and I think they showcase the clothing very well. I hate it when celeb endorsments are a collection of face shots.

  21. GossipVixen says:

I really really like the spring ads, but definitely don’t think they fit the Talbots demographic. The Fall ads however, are right in line with Talbots – simple, classic – dare I say – a bit boring?

I agree with those who say too much Photoshopping. I saw one of the big posters of her in the store window and really had to ask myself “Is that Julianne Moore?” Seems like a waste of money to hire a “star” and then Photoshop her into oblivion. :-/

  22. Sumodo1 says:

THAT coat! I will be buying that. And, is that a denim cap sleeve shirtwaist dress? Mine!

  23. Ellie says:

Fabulous. But so totally photoshopped. She is covered with freckles. We know this. Why cover them up?

  24. Nymeria says:

@ DoMaJoReMc – I get what you are trying to say regarding sun exposure & ageing, but using Jaycee Dugard as an example of how staying out of the sun keeps you youthful strikes me as wrong, somehow.

  25. jover says:

Again i’m old school actresses should act and models should model; there are still attractive models out there that aren’t anorexic alien looking, I wonder for what they are paying miss moore, how much of her demo really knows or cares who she is – all these actresses repping clothing lines seems to be part vanity, part easy money and maybe an unwillingness, especially among the younger set, to submit to the real acting discipline of theater. Just my take.

  26. Catherine says:

The classic look totally suits her and I love that coat. I just want hair like that. She is gorgeous.

  27. sam says:

I’m totally getting a Kiera Knightly vibe off photo 6!

  28. Camille says:

She is so beautiful as well as very talented. Lover her and I love the ads.

  29. filthycute says:

She has had work done and continues to have work done.

A 51 year old ginger after two kids and a long career with nary a wrinkle, bulge, or stoop? Please!

  30. frewt says:

Its humanly impossible to have a jaw line that sharp and defined at 50 years of age just by avoiding the sunlight. If that were true I’d look like I was in my 30’s also instead of pushing 48! Gravity doesn’t discriminate. I think she’s absolutely stunning but don’t believe her incredible good looks haven’t been helped along by cosmetic or surgical intervention.

  31. Eleonor says:

    I want that red shoes!
