Giuliana Rancic on her reality show: I “sacrifice some of my personal life to help others.”

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m not a fan of E! correspondent Giuliana Rancic. She’s superficial, she can be somewhat petty, and she has serious issues around eating and gaining weight, in that she refused to gain any even when her doctor told her it was medically necessary to realize her dream of becoming a mother.

Giuliana went public with her breast cancer diagnosis last month. Her cancer was discovered early when her doctor insisted she get a mammogram prior to her third round of IVF treatment. She underwent a double lumpectomy and was back to work at E! in about a week. In a new interview with Parade, Giuliana says that she’s happy to continue filming her reality show with her husband, and that she’s also really grateful for her job at E!. I prefaced all this with the fact that I don’t really like her, because after reading this interview I’m coming around. It sounds like this major health scare has changed her outlook:

On the feedback she received after revealing her breast cancer diagnosis.
“When I went public, I thought, ‘OK, I guess a couple of people are going to talk about this,’ but I couldn’t believe it. The outpouring and the love and support was just beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I really relied on a lot of those messages I was receiving through Twitter and email and through blogs right before the surgery and the week I was recovering. I know it sounds so cliché, but I think it helped me recover quicker and it got me in better spirits. The word I kept seeing over and over again was ‘strong.’ ‘Be strong, you’re strong.’ That word has never meant so much to me as it has this past month. I owe that all to the people behind me.”

On how she’s doing post-surgery.
“I’m good. I’m hanging in there. I have good days and bad days, but so far so good. I’m very optimistic and I’m just happy to have caught it early. I think that’s really the most important thing. Early detection means so much. I want women to make sure they’re taking care of their health and being proactive.”

She also received a lot of support from E! News co-anchor Ryan Seacrest.
“He’s great. I describe our relationships as like a brother-sister relationship. We pick on each other, he probably picks on me much more than I pick on him, but it’s like a brother would. We have a great time. He’s been great to work with all these years. I love working with him.”

On showcasing her life with husband Bill Rancic (an entrepreneur who won the first season of The Apprentice) on their reality show, Giuliana and Bill.
“I guess it all started on our wedding day. The Style Network made a TV special out of the wedding and we actually got used to having the cameras around pretty quickly. People loved that special so much that the network wanted to do a reality series with us.”

She has no regrets about showing the ups and downs of their life together.
“We just felt like with every trial and tribulation we’ve put on this show, people have told us how much they learned from it and how it made them feel less alone. We thought that was a pretty incredible opportunity. The fact that we can help people through our show is an honor. We’re happy to do it and it’s something that we continue to do. We really are like open books. It’s worth it to kind of sacrifice some of my personal life to help others.”

On balancing her busy schedule.
“I think it’s just about appreciating it. Yesterday, I did nine interviews with the London Olympic athletes for E! News and then I had a two-hour meeting after work on a project I’m doing, after that I went to have a drink with my husband and spent a little quality romantic time with him, and then I went to the George Clooney premiere for The Descendants and had some romantic time with him — just kidding! And then I cruised home and spent some time with my mom, who is in town. It seems crazy and it’s a long day and it’s exhausting, but whenever I feel it’s too much, I take a step back and think this is such a great job. I’m so fortunate to have it. I have never taken it for granted. Whenever things get a little too hectic or I feel like I’m going to break down, I just think about how lucky I am. I’m not digging ditches, this is not brain surgery, this is fun and I’m very lucky to have this job.”

[From Parade]

I really like what she said at the end, when she started bitching about her schedule and then checked herself by saying she’s not digging ditches or performing brain surgery. She gained some humility and it sounds like she’s not taking her life for granted now. Of course she went on prior to that about how her reality show, for which she’s being well paid and is even taking paid product endorsements, is some kind of noble endeavor to help couples who also struggle with infertility. Giuliana and Bill even did a commercial for Merck’s “fertility lifelines,” which I’m sure she’d say she did for humanitarian purposes. Still, baby steps. I’m hoping these two realize their dream of getting pregnant soon. They’ve been through a lot together, and Bill consistently comes across as a caring, committed guy.

she does sound more humble than usual,

but damn that hairstyle is not helping her forehead whatsoever

  2. Dawn says:

Oh just wait until the scare wears off and she will be right back at it. I can’t respect anyone who will not gain a mere five pounds for a chance to have a baby. I just can’t do it.

    • Sara says:

If she can’t gain five pounds to get pregnant, how is she going to gain the 25-40 pounds (I’m guessing she’s underweight now and would need to gain a little more to have a healthy pregnancy) she need to deliver a healthy baby?

It seems to me she’s better off not getting pregnant.

  3. aenflex says:

The humility will fade. Unless is it’s consistently reinforced or inherent to her personality, which it won’t be, and isn’t…

  4. kazoo says:

nevermind. you can’t be mean to someone with cancer.

  5. NYC_girl says:

I’ve never tried IVF and thankfully I haven’t had cancer, but I did one round of IUI and emotionally, it knocked me to the ground. Before I got laid off a few months ago I thought about adopting, maybe they’ll consider it too. Her body has been through a lot.

  6. lucy2 says:

I still don’t like her, but wish her well with all her health issues. It does sound like she appreciates her job, but I think her opinion of the value of their “reality” show sounds a bit high.

No kidding about that hairstyle, Arianna. Very unflattering!

  7. francesca says:

    Bill is so hot.

  8. Ruffian9 says:

    Her hairline. WTH?

  9. 6 says:

This is sad even though I have never been a fan. Breast cancer is awful to say the least.

Those have to be veneers on Bills teeth, right?

  10. Pizzazz says:

Sorry she has cancer but I don’t like her and I’m tired of hearing about her.

  11. Jackie says:

    my god, that forehead.

  12. katielouisiana says:

Her head is shaped like Stewie from Family Guy. That said, I hope she recovers from this. I think she should adopt, but I think everyone should adopt.

  13. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Humility, sure. Basic sense, not yet. Until she realizes that pregnancy isn’t going to be the magic bullet that gets her down to her longed-for birth weight and goes on ravaging her body and mind in a myriad of ways in this brazen denial of that one truth, I don’t know what to say. If the child must be biologically hers and must come from her anorexic body, she’s just setting herself up for more tears–useless ones. I almost wonder what Dr. House would say to her.

  14. Orange Cone says:

Michael K. is right. She looks like a praying mantis.

    • anonymoose says:

I always have thought she looks like ET (the alien). And has terrible personal style.

Bill looks like Frankenstein (though, less so in these pix than usual). And the name! One letter away from rancid, which is what this couple’s personality makes me think of.

Regardless of looks, I can’t stand her saliva-y way of talking, nor what she has to say. I think she should adopt a child if she selflessly wants to be a parent, but since her priorities are so out of whack maybe being a parent at all is not a great idea.

  15. Kim says:

At least she is appreciative of her job and life. Thats more than we can say for most reality stars (hint hint KarTrashaian Klan).

  16. Nev says:

what are all the comments about her forehead? really, she had cancer…ridiculous….so what, who cares??

    love the show…cute couple.

  17. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Her hairline receded from starving herself and/or puking after eating. Malnurishment causes you to lose your hair. I’ve been pointing out her receding hairline for a while now, wondering WHY THE HELL HER HUSBAND CAN’T SEE THAT SHE IS SICK.

Or, he sees (how could he not?), and he just doesn’t care. I think he’s a disgusting human being. As for her, I feel sorry for her because people with true eating disorders cannot help themselves.

  18. F5 says:

I’ll never like her but damn, I wish her well..No one deserves that, hope she gets well and has dem babies and whatever makes her happy

  19. Cerulean says:

She looks hungry in every photo. She should treat her body better after this.

  20. Jazmin says:

Did she have her implants removed?

  21. Redd says:

While I can emphatize with the cancer scare, I cannot stand the nacissitic attitude constantly on display with this woman, I have pretty much given up watching E news because everytime I see her standing sideways, I know she is thinking “look how thin I am” and it disgusts me that she believes herself to be supremely attractive. If that wasn’t enough, they paired her with obnoxious Kelly Osbourne to smash others on the Fashion Police. I wish she would crawl off and eat her husband, he’s got to be the most irratiting man alive. I would have sworn he was gay until he married this insect.

  22. Redd says:

Gee, I was ranting and my spelling is terrible….oh well I do feel better now.

  23. Angela says:

She is GROSS! Look at her FACE! YUCK! She needs to gain some weight. Completely and utterly unattractive both inside and out. Grasshopper!

  24. JaneWonderfalls says:

    She seems annoying…

    • Kimbob says:

Yes, @JaneWonderfalls…I agree w/you. I wish her well, as well. However, I’ve never warmed up to her AT ALL. Just not my type of person. Way too superficial & kiss-assy to the celebs she “interacts” with. Ugh.

Whenever I look at a picture of her, I am reminded HOW MUCH she looks like an ugly rat….seriously!

      • Alynn says:

        But she thinks she’s beautiful…..lol
I’ve seen her parents on tv and i always wondering Where did she get that odd head/face shape. From her father maybe..

  25. Str8Shooter says:

@katielouisiana: LMFAO! Couldn’t have said it better myself!

He is a MAJOR hottie. What he sees in this half-faced girl is beyond me.

  26. Leek says:

Anyone can get caught up in themselves but if she really loves her husband she will work on herself a bit because he seems to adore her and he is very patient with her.

  27. I really hope so too. A a fellow survivor, I remind her she is person – not her diagnosis. I only hope her co-workers treat her better. I literally had one (the paycheck signer!) that wouldn’t make eye contact. Made my decision to leave my toxic job a no-brainer. Good luck to G, and I hope the people at “E!” are bigger than that. The people who didn’t conceive the Kardashian shows, of course.

  28. kathy says:

I think bill and her are awesome! they compliment each other

  29. Roxy says:

I hate to say it but she’s always had this overly skinny, gangly type body. It was so unfeminine. Too much bone and not enough muscle. She never had a nice, normal full figure and so therfore no boobs you’d actually notice! She’s lucky in that sense, as dresses or whatever she wears look the same to me in that department. The mamogram didn’t make a drastic change.

  30. samantha says:

OMG…she is so gross and annoying. Please Please Please gain some weight! She is clearly anorexic and Bill is merely enabling her. She has a light bulb head too.

  31. Jillian Rose says:

people are such haters–jealous of G & B’s love for eachother–which seems really sincere. And even if GR is not as beautiful as Natalie Morales, she has great style and nice make up. She does her make up nice and seems really nice

I love you G & B and congrats on the new baby boy.
    God bless you <3

Gillian does need to gain some weight thoug..and a shorter hair do would look more flattering on her. She may be one of those gals that looks better in person; ala Tori Spelling. Gosh People! She cannot help it! he world be annoying if only perfect people were in the limelight. I like ordinary too.
