Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne at the Oscars: they both looked incredible

If you haven’t heard the story of how Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrote Bridesmaids together it’s a good one. (Unlike Kristen, Annie didn’t star in Bridesmaids but she had a cameo as the scared airplane passenger that sat next to Kristen’s character.) The two of them had a couple of ideas for co-writing a screenplay, and they pitched one to Judd Apatow. Then they changed their mind on the concept, and called Judd the next day to say that they wanted to switch it up to another story. It was too late already because Judd told them that he had already sold it! So they stuck with Bridesmaids, wrote it up on a long weekend and went through a very involved editing process that they learned as they went along. It took about four years total to make the movie. I heard an interview with the two of them on KCRW’s The Business and I was impressed with how funny and open they were about it. Now the two of them are moving on to another project, and Wiig has said she’s not going to helm another Bridesmaids for some time. So there’s no Bridesmaids 2 coming, and her costars have been clear that they’re not onboard without her.

Mumolo and Wiig came to the Oscars together and I just loved watching their red carpet interviews. They were excited to be at the Oscars and they cracked some jokes and talked about how much it meant to them to be there. Mumalo said that when she wrote Bridesmaids she used to wait tables and also had a job working with kids. She said “I worked like three jobs at once!” (I’m disappointed in our photo agencies because they don’t have a photo of Annie and Kristen together, and they didn’t even consider Annie photoworthy on her own, but you can see an interview and picture of the two of them together here.)

Moving on to the fashion, I really loved the tailoring and style of this fabulous J. Mandel gown that Kristen wore. It was both incredibly flattering and fashion-forward without looking silly or overdone at all. Sometimes these tiered tulle gowns can be ridiculous, but this just looks effortlessly pretty. I don’t like the color and find that it washes Kristen out a little. I think that she just doesn’t want to go too vamp and goes for an understated look with most of her fashion, which is why we’re seeing such a killer dress in a drab color. Still, it was a great look overall.

Wiig’s costar Rose Byrne also brought it last night. Rose could have easily looked bizarre and fug, remember the terrible pantsuit she wore to the SAGs? When Ryan Seacrest questioned her on the red carpet about that pantsuit, she joked “It’s crazy for a woman to wear pants, it’s 2012.” ha! This one shoulder black sequin Vivienne Westwood is to die for though. Plus she didn’t go as severe with her pageboy hair and I think it was flattering last night. Did you notice how tiny her waist looked? On screen it was noticeable how slender she is. Also, I just googled her and found out she’s Australian! I thought she was British after seeing her on Get Him To The Greek. She’s a solid actress.

Rose Byrne is so thin! Sorry, that’s all I can notice here. Wiig is awesome, but this dress looks like the cat got hold of the hamper.

    • QQ says:

I noticed that also with The jumpsuit of Horror: at was all about her bony Chestplate, at least she spared us the cleavage this time

    • bros says:

I know! she has lost SO much weight. she looked grossly underweight here and it was even worse when she turned around. when the hell did she lose so much weight?

      • Mae East says:

She started to look painfully thin during the first season of DAMAGES. I had thought she was looking so much better in BRIDESMAIDS, but it looks like she’s back on the decline….

    • Thalia says:

I agree Rose is too thin. If you notice her elbow bones are smaller than her arms and her collar bone sticking out. She didnt look like this in Get Him To The Greek. All I can say is, its a good thing she was wearing black so we could see her at ALL. 🙁

  2. Asli says:

Kristen’s dress is amazing. I want to like Rose’s dress but sequins always look budget/bad to me and the fact that she’s so skinny isn’t helping (second to last photo – ARMS!!!)

  3. Aiobhan says:

Rose looked incredible. Kristen is funny as hell but looks washed out and just boring. She needed a necklace not those stupid bangles. And her hair needed washed and brushed. But I will say that this is a marked improvement over her Globes and SAG dresses. Oddly enough in the same beige family.

  4. Jo says:

I’m sorry to disagree, but I don’t like Kristen Wiig’s dress at all. The design is blah and the color is not good on her at all. I think I might have liked the dress more if the ruffles started at her waist instead of her hips.
So, I’m waiting for you to write about Emma Stone’s presentation. It was the best of the night, AND she looked terrific.

  5. eileen says:

I love Kristen’s dress-she’s not someone who would dress “glamy” so this is the perfect pick ofr her. LOVE Kristen Wiig! Love hte black dress as well. She pulled it off.

  6. normades says:

The beige color just washes Kristen out and her hair and make-up look neglected imo.

Rose’s sequined dress looks pretty budget, but I like her accessories.

    • Marjalane says:

Ugh. I thought Kristen Wiig looked awful. The SNL crew make her look better than she did last night; That hair hanging in her face almost hid the dirty looking make-up but not quite.

Rose Byrne looked lovely; I think her bangs look good on her. Dayum, she’s super skinny, isn’t she?!

  7. hateonit. says:

I like Kristen. I do. but she needed something that popped. this dress is….pretty but not enough. her hair and makeup look good. rose’s dress was beautiful. very striking. yes she’s thin but she doesn’t look like he’s dying. I love her hair I think it’s sweet.

  8. GoodCapon says:

Has Rose always looked this thin?

    • Abby says:

I remember her looking much healthier in Troy. She looked like a Renaissance painting. Granted that was forever ago but she doesn’t even look the same!

  9. Ravensdaughter says:

Ahhh-the black dress is sequins–I thought it was pleather.

  10. bea says:

The way KW’s dress is constructed gives her a big weird tire around her hips. Look at the full length photo. Also, that color is so drab and doesn’t work on very many people. Her make-up and hair look great – very natural – who knew she was such a beauty?

The black sequins dress does not scream high quality to me. It’s just o.k. She seems very scrawny…..

  11. Marianne says:

I liked Rose’s dress…and somehow the bangs don’t bother me here. Kristen looked nice. A definite improvement from the SAG’s fiasco. But a little too safe for my liking.

  12. Esmom says:

Both Rose and Kristin look like they could use a sandwich or two. I thought they looked good. Kristin’s dress was beautiful except the color seemed a bit off to me. Her hair looked pretty but not quite refined enough for the event.

  13. lucy2 says:

I like both dress OK, neither thrills me. Rose’s hair is a huge improvement. I wish a great stylist would work with Kristen.
Rose does look really thin. She has lost a lot of weight from when she first started getting bigger roles like Damages, and she was a slim girl before.

  14. Julie says:

Don’t like K’s dress at all. Rose is too thin; dress ok on her though.

  15. The Truth Fairy says:

Rose needs a more youthful hairstyle.

  16. Kiyoshigirl says:

Yuck! Sorry Celebitchy you are totally off on this one. Here’s a perfect example of how one’s personal opinion about a celeb can affect their judgement about their appearance.Kristen’s dress looks horrible. The color is gross and the shredded skirt looks like something that belongs under a wedding dress for filler. If LeAnn Rimes had on the same dress we’d be yelling about the color looking like puke. How could she blow such a great opportunity to smash it? She should fire whomever led her in this direction.

Rose Byrne has become too thin to look good in anything. The dress was O.K. but could have been hanging on a hangar and it would have looked the same. Sad. She is so pretty and talented. Again, how could she blow it so bad? Hammer time.

  17. The Bobster says:

What? Kristen didn’t show up wearing the little doll hands and the huge forehead?

Oh yeah, only Ali G would do that.

  18. poppy says:

the nude tutu is terrible. between the hair, dress, makeup her overall coloring is awful. was expecting something much better. i would have liked the dress in a different color, sort of 20s style with a bodice.
rose’s dress fit amazingly well and that’s saying something because she will float away if anyone near her coughs. needs a sandwich asap. she looks like leighton meester with that hair-don’t.

  19. Pedge says:

Nude gowns do no favors for anyone. Kristen looks tired and ill.

  20. Kim says:

Both to thin and look unhealthy looking especially Rose. My husband said she looked like a corpse =( Kristin needed bolder makeup with her blah color dress.

  21. kibbles says:

Someone needs to call Rose Byrne out for having an eating disorder. This is not her normal weight at all!! She was bigger in Bridesmaids and even back then she was already very thin. This is just too much. I can’t even look at her without shuddering. I actually gasped when I saw her arms. I think she has lost a significant amount of weight since awards season. Maybe she has purposely shed pounds for her red carpet appearances. If she was 15 pounds heavier she’d look great in this dress but at this weight she would look awful in almost anything. I know being obese isn’t healthy either but I am more comfortable looking at Melissa McCarthy than looking at Rose’s skin and bones look.

Kristen Wiig looks good here compared to her other red carpet appearances. Probably the best she has ever looked on the red carpet. I agree it would have been better if her dress had a bit of color so she wouldn’t looked washed out.

  22. Camille (The original) says:

I love Kristen but I don’t care for that colour on her. The dress would have looked so much better in a different colour. Hell even black would have been an improvement.

    I don’t care for Rose’s look.

  23. sullivan says:

It’s odd how women can be ridiculed for being too thin, but it’s un-p.c. to say a woman is overweight. “Eat a sandwich” is a perfectly acceptable comment, but “step away from the buffet” is insensitive. Why is that?

  24. AnnieC says:

I like her a lot but she looks malnourished! Another Vicky Beckham in the making (hope not!)

  25. Cleveland Girl says:

Rose looks like an anorexic freak. If you guys think she looks good you have been working too hard.

  26. anytime says:

both of them had terrible nose jobs. sorry but that’s the only thing i noticed here. angelina’s nosejob (not the recent, but the one before that, which she got around 2004 presumably) was the ideal nosejob. i wish more ladies would take note of that. rooney mara’s is a pretty good and hard to notice rhinoplasty also which softens her features and makes her face more feminine. although i’d rather look like lisbeth myself. then again she ain’t a real goth, she’s a poseur. anyway and it looks like wiig gained a bit of weight and looks better than rose, sad because rose was so pretty before. also looks eerily similar to anna farris’s dress and hairdo! but farris looked better imo

  27. Hikkilove says:

I think Rose is incredibly beautiful and I love her hair here, but she looked too skinny. Especially in the last pic. Something about it made me think that her head was too big for her body (anyone else?). I hate Kristen’s dress and hair. She’s much prettier as a blonde and simething about the style just wasn’t doing it for me.

  28. Zoe says:

Sorry but Kristens dress does nothing for her. It washes her out and doesn’t flatter her frame. She has an amazing body, and could pull off so many different shapes. Rose has always been a very thin girl. Her just losing ten lbs could make her look skeletal.

  29. mek821 says:

Too bad K had rhinoplasty. Her nose just looks so jobbed, it’s all I can see when I look at her in photos. (In live action I don’t notice it as much because she is so freaking talented and funny.)

  30. greta says:

I think they both looked okay but am still baffled as to why that the movie was even an Oscar contender. I didn’t think it was all that original or funny.

  31. Onyx XV says:

Kristen is a talented, funny woman and I enjoy her work, but I don’t enjoy that dress – the non-color completely washes her out. And when did she start looking so haggard? Her face looks like she’s been around the block a buncha times!
