Robert Pattinson reportedly scored $12 million Dior contract: good choice?

Here are some more photos of Robert Pattinson at this weekend’s LACMA Art + Film Gala. Sparkles went solo to the event, and he reportedly spent most of his time schmoozing with all of the Hollywood A-listers and then some. According to Hollywood Life’s eyewitness, “Rob acted like a total gentleman at the gala. He was very polite to everyone. He spent most of the evening speaking with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. He seemed to be in great spirits.” I saw photos of him looking friendly with Florence Welch too.

So many of Rob’s moves these days say to me that he’s positioning himself to become a bigger, more respected Hollywood player post-Twilight. The tabloids may claim that Rob just wants to go home to London and focus on his music, but everything he’s done since Kristen cheated on him seems to show that he cares about his acting career and he’s planning for a future in Hollywood, and that he’s positioning himself as a “total pro” within the industry – the happy warrior who will go out there and sell his films, even when his girlfriend is screwing her married director. Just look at how many new movies Rob has signed on for since the Twihard Meltdown, you know? And here’s further evidence that Rob is in it for the long-haul: Sparkles has just signed on to a major, MAJOR endorsement deal.

Smell you, Robert Pattinson!

E! News can exclusively reveal that the Twilight star has signed a mega-deal with Christian Dior. Pattinson will star in a series of ad campaigns for the French fashion house’s line of men’s fragrances.

“Rob likes the brand,” reports a source, who estimates the deal at being worth close to $12 million for three years.

Other celebs who have endorsed Dior fragrances include Jude Law, Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman, who appeared in a controversial topless ad last year.

R.Pattz is no stranger to Dior. He’s hit the red carpet in several different Dior Homme looks, including a tuxedo at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and jeans at the Teen Choice Awards.

[From E! News]

A three-year contract for close to $12 million? Well done, Rob. I like this choice, and it will probably bring in a younger clientele for Dior cologne. Twihard girls will buy Dior cologne for their boyfriends/husbands (because some of these Twihards are actually soccer moms, you know). I wonder what Kristen Stewart will have to say about this? You know she thinks she’s too hardcore and authentic to become the face of a “soulless makeup company” and yet she represents Balenciaga’s perfume. I really hope Rob doesn’t come out and try to act like he’s too hardcore for his $12 million deal too. He probably won’t.

If it’s true Mila got the boot for being too scruffy when she’s out and about, then Sparkles had better ditch the sacred armpits, baseball caps and dirty t-shirts sharpish.

    • marie says:

ha ha, they’re just keepin it real.. (he also needs to shave the chia pet growin from his neck)

    • Jenny says:

Exactly. Why do they choose people who look dirty for most of the time? Pattinson, Pitt, Steward they looks greasy, smelly, and dirty all the time. They could be face of Dettol anti-bacterial soap and not luxurious fragrance.

      • LAK says:

OMG…there is a shampoo on the market, it’s name escapes me, which i always think is a spoof because the ads for it imply it’s motor oil.

      • Jan says:

Rob has the whole package and is a true gentleman. He will make a wonderful Dior man. Good for you Rob.

    • Annie says:

Oh, if it’s a 12 million dollar contract you KNOW there are major clauses there, and I’m sure one of them is to represent the brand properly. You can’t be the face of Dior and look smelly. This will be good for him. Also, no half ass promo like Kstew’s unenthusiastic Florabotanica interviews.

I don’t get the Mila love. She is so overrated. You look at her outside photo shoots and red carpets and there’s nothing special there. Her body is basically a square: no hips, no waist, no boobs, no butt. And with no make up on she’s tragic. She has a heck of a PR team if they’re selling her as the sexiest woman alive.

    • The Original Genevieve says:

Actually, I think he’s a great choice for Dior.

While he may look scruffy in his personal life and his down time from filming, he always manages to look and act like a total class act on the red carpet.

I think he’s a smart guy to line up future film deals and endorsement projects to continue his career. I see no reason to believe that he will act “hardcore” about the Dior deal, or in any way other than the complete gentleman he has proven himself to be.

  2. Anname says:

He was signed on to all those movies before the great Twihard meltdown, it was always the direction he was going.

    • another nina says:

No, he was not signed on ALL those movies Prior to mini-coopering. Please check your records.

      • Anname says:

If you want to quibble, he added the Carey Mulligan movie after the fact. My point was he didn’t suddenly change direction after the scandal.

      • another nina says:

My point is that your use of absolute terms (such as “ALL”, “I know for sure”, etc.) is very distracting 🙂

  3. Gaia says:

He said a year ago that celebs who do this are ridiculous and stupid, he just like the Trampire acted as if he’s above doing commercials and now he proves that for money he’d fake a relationship or do these “artistic”endorsments because he’s so different from the rest of Hollywood./sarcasm

    • Anname says:

2 yrs ago he said it would be stupid for him to do an endorsement because he was so overexposed and he didn’t see the point. He is at a different place in his career now, things change. Of course he is going to get the “sell-out” accusations, but it seems to make more sense for him now than it did then. Clooney says he does these types of ads so he can make the movies he wants to make, I expect Rob has come to that realization also.

      • Micki says:

Would you say he’s less overexposed now than 2 years ago?
And if so won’t such a contract overexpose him again?

      • Annie says:

        And he’s not overexposed now?

      • Anname says:

He has NO movies being released in 2013. He is doing small independent movies for the forseeable future. Clearly he is way less exposed than he was in 2009-2010, when he made those comments. These Dior ads won’t be coming out until next year, it seems to be good timing- the next step in moving away from teen/Twi stuff.

I really like the Jude Law Dior ads, hope Rob’s are similar in look.

      • Scarlett says:

Gucci isn’t doing much for Blake Lively’s career (or lack thereof).

      • honeybee says:

To Micki, Annie regards to his over exposure now.

Unfortunately he has the wrong kind of exposure now thanks to his skanky gf.
By going to some prestigious events and being see mingling with the ‘right’ crowd in HW and signing up for a great brand like this definitely offsets that tabloid crap he has been dealing with.

He is stepping away from all things Twilight and is taking himself seriously as an actor thanks to Cosmopolis so this seems like a good way to ensure longevity.

He won’t have movies coming out in 2013, and being small indies who knows how wide a release they will get. These small movies aren’t gonna pay him much either.

This way he can put that Dior money towards a prod company that he might want to start someday or just have the cash inflow to enjoy his life while he makes those small interesting movies that he likes.

      • Lola says:

@honeybee, you do realize this GREAT brand is repped by a GREAT cheater, Jude Law. Don’t you have any choice words for him or are you only offended when “your” boy gets cheated on. I feel it is safe to say that if Jude L can have a career after his cheating scandal so can Kristen Stewart. I assume that is a painful thought for you, almost as painful that Rob took Kristen back. Cry into that Edward pillow, girlfriend!

      • honeybee says:

To LOLA – WTF has my post got anything to do with Jude Law being associated with Dior? IDGAF if Jude was a cheater or was cheated on.

WTF does my post have to do with whether KSkank will have a career post-scandal or not.

Brush up on your reading comprehension, Krisbian and keep thinking about how ‘authentic’ and ‘real’ your idol is to get some peace.

      • Lola says:

@honeybee of course you don’t care what Jude L does, just Kristen S, right? Kristen S cheating is the worst thing ever and she should disappear, Jude L cheating means hot Dior contract. Stay pressed, Robsessed! Kristen Stewart isn’t going anywhere, sweetheart, no matter how many times you type it!

      • another nina says:

        @ Anname
2 years ago Patz did not decline Burberry’s offer because of the supposed overexposure. No, absolutely not. He “politely” declined it stating that “he is an actor, not a model”, and as such he refused to participate in a commercial sell-out.
I have nothing against him participating in advertisements and building-up his brand. I think it’s a wise business deal. However, I lose my respect for him because he seems to be as hypocritical as Ms KStew.

      • Anname says:

Nina, lose all the respect you want, but I think it’s kinda nitpicky. At that point in his career, it wasn’t right for him, and he said he would feel ridiculous doing it. It doesn’t insult other actors to admit he wasn’t comfortable with it. He is in a much different place today, Twilight is over, and he feels credible enough to accept it. That is not hypocritical, it’s a process of maturing.

      • another nina says:

Anname, thanks for your kind permission, I doubt I needed it 😉 Anyway, when a person has principles, s/he tends to follow those principles despite inconveniences. If person’s “principles” change based on the stage of his career, then it’s called business strategy rather than life principle.
Judging by the speed with which Rob drops his principles, it might become more and more difficult to refute his actions going forward.

      • Anname says:

Why do you think it was a principle of his? Maybe it was just a choice. I didn’t get the impression he was opposed to it on principle, but rather it was just not for him at that point.

      • another nina says:

Hey, you extrapolate his old quotes to his current actions almost daily, hence you also consider him as a man with principles.
Otherwise, using your current logic, we should agree that all his former statements are just outdated since he has obviously matured, is at a different stage of his career, etc.

He stated his decline of Burberry’s offer as a principle: “I’m an actor, I’m not model.” Well, they offered only $2 mil though, so may be all his principles transform into choices based on a price?… 🙂

      • Miss Bennett says:

        @Lola
I think you are going to find that the public is less forgiving of cheaters than you think. Jude Law’s career has suffered as much from his rocky personal life as it has from his his loss of looks. People vote with their wallets, if they don’t buy products and films associated with Miss Stewart her career will suffer. As for your ridiculous replies to Honeybee, your reading comprehension needs a great deal of work. I suggest you get started right away.

      • Beth says:

@missbennett correct me if I am wrong but Jude Law is the face of Dior and has Anna Kareina coming out and it appears he is quite good in it if you believe the critics thus far. He has been in the quite popular Sherlock Holmes as well. Gasp! And all of this is post scandal. So while he may have faltered after his cheating scandal, he seems to be on the upswing again.  So claiming Ms Stewart won’t be able to recover from a cheating scandal, well, you could be wrong so perhaps you should refrain from speaking in such absolutes. If Mr Pattinson can take a year and a half of from filming, I would assume Ms Stewart could do the same. Unless you are one of those women who can easily forgive a guy who cheats but not a female.

    • T.C. says:

      Gaia,
When did he say celebs who do endorsement deals are ridiculous and stupid? If he said it maybe he forgot that his Twilight paychecks will stop coming in after BD2. He got used to having those $12 Million checks and needs a new way to keep the money rolling in. I would too.

      • Jess says:

He never did. Rob’s never ruled out a big endorsment or called it stupid.

      • Annie says:

Yes, he has Jess. Gosh, Rob’s fans and their selective memory.

      • Linda says:

I gotta say I agree with Anname on this. He did say it was stupid for him to endorse a brand but that was when he was first starting out and he got an offer from Burberry (I think). Now he’s gonna be doing much smaller films that Twilight will be done and he probably wants another way of staying relevant aside from his films. What better way to do that than with an endorsement deal with Dior! I think it’s a great idea for him, Dior is one of those classic brands that everyone will remember him on their ads. I just hope he doesn’t take a page out of the K-Slut rule book and start trashing other actors endorsing other things.

    • Anname says:

      To Nina (way up above!)
I don’t accept your premise that he was speaking on principle, so your theory doesn’t work for me. You are putting more into his 2010 comments then he seemed to, imo. Agree to disagree I guess.

  4. dooliloo says:

“It’s a Twilight journey. Every journey ends and I go on.
The world turns and I Twilight with it.
Plans appear. Twilight nightmares take over.
So wherever I go there you are. My Twilight luck. My Twilight fate. My Twilight fortune.

Mister Dio- *Kellan Lutz storms in out of nowhere*

Lutzy No. 5. Inevitable!” *Kellan Lutz smiles*

  5. FreeSpiritedGirl says:

I love this guy when he is dressed in suit. Big muah to Rob.
OMG! I will buy this fragrance for sure. I would spread it all over my house just so I could feel how he smells. Lol! Forgive me for my silliness but I can’t help loving Rob. Muah muah muah, Rob! :*

  6. Jane says:

    You said what Sparkles:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELfvT0FPGc4&feature=player_embedded
    It starts at 4:00

My,my how much changes in year.

    • UNF Joan Jett! says:

At least he makes enough cash to buy his “manly man card” back. Or whatever it is that his fans think he turned in.

    • honeybee says:

I don’t think he was fully invested in the whole serious actor thing before he got confidence in his acting. I really believe Cosmopolis is responsible for him finally deciding to embrace his role as a serious actor, and he has started acting like it. He is attending industry events, and by doing this campaign I think he is starting to plan for a long future in Hollywood as an actor.

People grow, change their minds, embrace their opportunities, and that is what he is doing.

      • wild flower says:

It’s annoying that the ‘reply’ option on this site disappears after so many hits.
Honeybee, wanted to respond to your previous post above about him wanting to develop his own production company. The article did mention he spent lots of time with Spielberg and Hanks. Also agree that people should be allowed to change their minds as they gain more experience and maturity.

      • Miss Bennett says:

        @Honeybee
Exactly! Must we all retain the opinions we held in our early twenties for the rest of our lives? God forbid! All normal people gain knowledge and experience as the years pass. Thank goodness we do or we would be as silly as the Twihards our entire lives. Mr. Pattinson is making sound business decisions that will be to his financial advantage for years to come. When all of this has passed, he can retire to his own private island, rich and safe from his stalkers.

    • Sunnee says:

Aren’t we all entitled to change our minds? We grow, we have experiences, we change or we stagnate. Maybe back then he felt he was too green to have much offer, now that he has started to make his mark he feels more confident. I always felt his humility was tied to his lack of confidence. Also, who in their right mind would turn down that kind of money?

  7. T.C. says:

He has lost his $12 Million per film meal ticket with the end of Twilight BD2 so I’m not surprised to see him jumping on the next best thing. He got back with the cheating girlfriend to get that BD2 backend money so the guy will do anything for money. I bet he will jump at the Fifty Shades of Gray male lead if they offer him Twilight level money. At least he doesn’t go around acting like he’s above selling out like Kscrew. That girl is the biggest hypocrite in Hollywood.

  8. jani says:

I agree that he has been making the best of a bad situation, famous for being associated with an embarrassingly stupid film franchise and dating a crappy gf, and is now going for “total pro.” He has shown that he can clean up well for red carpets, etc., and I think that he can easily avoid silly-scruffy Brad Pitt Chanel territory. Just please, please, please have someone make him shave his neck.

    • wild flower says:

Wish I didn’t go back and look at his neck. Funny how the guy that played the wolf character looks hairless and shiny in his pictures.

  9. A says:

Hm. Didn’t he turn down some fashion deal with Burberry when he first started out with Twilight and made some snotty remarks about it? As someone said on this website before, how you play the game in Hollywood evolves…but for a dude who has railed on about the vanity and superficiality of Hollywood and other actors, this seems fairly hypocritical. With women, so many actresses have done this sort of thing because it can help their career (ScarJo, Natalie Portman, Mila, Mia, Jennifer, Emma…)…it’s almost expected now for an actress to do that sort of thing to build their brand…It’s not really something men have to do…Anyway, unless this is on Gossip Cop it’s probably bullshit.

    • honeybee says:

GossipCop would be the first to deny this IF this is crap. This has been circulating for a day now. So yeah its a done deal. His manager Nick is particular in debunking wrong info about Rob’s career floating around.

We should get something from Dior in a couple days I guess.

  10. Julia says:

I wonder how Kristen is able to date a guy who goes to this Hollywood events full of fake industry people and now, is also the face of a fragrance. 🙂
She must be killing herself hahaha.

  11. geekychick says:

Well… acting obviously is not his forte, so I think this is a smart decision. He’ll stay in the public eye and 12 mil $? Who wouldn’t?
This whole Robsten stuff since the summer, and his and hers re-branding (bc this is his re-branding, this cruising on galas, Dior etc) are the most interesting from Lainey’s sociological-gossip point of view, at least to me. For example: how will the obsessive fans build the whole “scandal”* story in their minds? How many of them will jump the ship as his fans if he stays with her? How many will suddenly realize how good it is to be a representative of a fashion brand, after they ridiculed Stewart for it (as I remember, she clearly can’t act so this is all that’s left)? How will all of this look a year later? How many fans will he have (and how many will she have) a year later, with new teen sagas and all?…and many more.

eh, I think he stands no chance in becoming a big HW ACTOR-look at how many young actors, who are really talented, are trying to make it these days (I think that’s the problem with Stewart, although I think she has more presence). If there is any integrity in that industry left, which I doubt.

*I kinda think it’s all a setup, these days, especially after those Ross&Rupert photos the other day.

    • Lauren says:

He has been chosen to star in movies directed by Michod and Herzog. They have more credibility than you and he’s doing fine.

      • Annie says:

I love that people mention Michod like he’s some powerhouse name or somebody genius or important in the world of cinema. Do you even know the guy’s resume? What effect/impact has he had in the industry or in the art form? Same goes for Herzog. Stop trying to impress people making it seem like he’s working with amazing directors or that you know anything about cinema by dropping these names. Michod has seven credits only so far. These guys are not really special.

        Just like Rob, you’re pretentious.

      • Anname says:

Ok Annie, since you believe you are the only arbiter of good cinema, who would you have him work with?

    • Annie says:

I’ve been saying this all along – they’re both finding new ways to stay relevant because their futures are uncertain without Twilight. Rob especially is not getting any type of interesting work. He’s getting somevwork but it’s been forgettable through and through. And it’s been unsuccessful financially. When you see the work done by Gosling, Garfield, Eisenberg, Gordon Levitt, etc you realize that Rob really has a long way to go and he’s no match for these guys. He’s not an acting force and his resume is unimpressive. Remove the Twilight success and what is he standing on? He needs to find new ways to remain a star until he actually becomes one without Twilight. Blake Lively is not a true star but she has her Gucci contract and sold her wedding pics. These are all strategies.

I wish him the best and I actually respect those trying their best to stay relevant and have used Twilight to the max. Ashley Greene has been smart. Very smart. That DKNY campaign was a great move.

Taylor Lautner completely dropped the ball. He became irrelevant while the franchise is still going. What happened?

      • Anname says:

Rob is not getting interesting work -really??? Cronenberg, Herzog, Michod? These are the people he WANTS to work with, well respected directors doing interesting films. Why is this so hard for you to understand? You keep repeating how he is failing and it is such a mischaracterization.

      • Katie Scarlett says:

The majority of Sparkles’ movies have been forgettable garbage. Even after all the public nonsense for Cosmopolis…nobody went to see it.

From a movie going and talent stand point he’s irrelevant.

But his fangirls want to think he’s the next Leo DiCaprio. Delusional.

      • Anname says:

He has made 5 Twi movies in 4 yrs, with limited time for anything else in between. Remember Me, Water for Elephants, Bel Ami, and Cosmopolis. The first 2 made nice profits, the last one was a critical success for him (much needed). Bel Ami was the only true failure of the bunch.

I certainly don’t think he is going to be the next Dicaprio, but why does that matter. He can be a successful actor making interesting movies. And I don’t think Dior would be paying him $12 million if he were “irrelevant”.

      • Annie says:

What do you know about Cronenberg? Would you have watched Cosmopolis if it weren’t for Rob? If you knew Cronenberg you would know Cosmopolis isn’t his best work (in a year when he made A dangerous method). His interesting auteur days are long gone and he made his impact a long time ago when his movies were interesting. Nobody even saw Cosmopolis, so why are you rubbing it in if it did poorly and got mixed to negative reviews, especially for his own performance. That’s a high standard to you? Mediocre stuff?

And ~Michod and Herzog~? What impact and effect have they had in the art form or industry, if you don’t mind explaining? Stop dropping names like you know or care about cinema. If you knew cinema Pattinson’s movies would be the last things you’d see.

      • T.C. says:

True Ashley Greene has been very smart about extending her 15 min of fame and hooking up the DKNY campaign to stay relevant. The girl knows how to hustle. Sparkles and Kscrew are now following her lead.

      • Anname says:

OMG Annie, you don’t get it at all. My point is that these are ROB’S CHOICES. He is not failing, he is making deliberate choices. You may disagree with the direction he is going, but that is what he wants to do. He is building a career Annie. There are more choices out there than just Hollywood blockbusters. You act like unless he has a blockbuster immediately he is a complete failure, and that to me shows your lack of understanding. None of the movies he has signed on to are going to be blockbusters, and he is completely aware of that.

You can throw shade at me all you want, although I don’t know why that is at all relevant. I could defend my knowledge of Cronenberg work (husband introduced me to his movies long ago), and you can pretend all you want that Herzog and Michod aren’t well-respected. And one more point, you are blatantly lying about Rob’s Cosmo reviews, his performance was praised even by those who didn’t like the movie.

      • LAK says:

@Annie – For an actor in Pattinson’s position, money isn’t everything.

The guys you have mentioned ie Gosling, Garfield, Eisenberg, Gordon Levitt spent many many years in indie films that no one saw. Despite their forays into blockbuster territory, they are still seen as indie kids.

Pattinson seems to be following the path of DiCaprio/Winslet after TITANIC. And if he is as successful as they are, no one will be mentioning TWILIGHT or offering him the next green hornet [for example], just as DiCaprio/Winslet are never offerred those types of roles, and no one mentions TITANIC [despite it’s continued hold on the public] when talking about them.

BTW how can you say Cronenberg and Herzog aren’t respected??!!They may not be your favourite types of films or make your bland blockbuster studio list BUT they are hugely respected.

Personally, and i know most of my friends would agree, we saw COSMOPOLIS because it was a cronenberg film NOT because Pattinson was in it. Was it his best work? no. Will we go see next film he makes? Yes.

It’s like people who go see Woody Allen films. His best work is 70s and 80s BUT despite having a stellar cast, most people go to see them because they are Woody Allen films. And most actors jump to be in his films because it adds kudos to their CVs. his unsavory scandal has only made a difference in his BO numbers but he was never a BO blockbuster type director.

      • Scarlett says:

It’s ridiculous to compare to Winslet/DiCaprio who were already Oscar nominees before Titanic. And Titanic was never the national joke Twilight is (it actually won Best Picture). And Winslet got her second nom FOR Titanic.

        Not comparable.

All of Pattinson’s movies have been commercial and critical flops and his notices as an actor have been mediocre to just plain laughable.

Cosmopolis was supposed to be the gamechanger and it wasn’t (mixed reviews, horrible box office).

Gosling, JGL, etc work in highly praised or award winning indies. Not the crap Pattinson has been putting out. Just because something is labeled ‘indie’ doesn’t mean it’s good or worthwhile.

Nothing in his slate of projects changes this.

Pattinson and Zac Efron are about in the same boat. Fangurls and teens think they are ‘serious actors’ making ‘good choices’ – the general public laughs.

Got to love the fangurl bubble.

      • Anname says:

Scarlett, you are in the “hater” bubble, and can’t see that your viewpoint is extreme as well, just the flipside.
Cosmopolis was not intended as a game changer, it is a step in the direction he wants to go. He did get very good reviews, as much as you try to say otherwise. And I have never claimed that Rob is on the same level as Gosling etc right now, but I think he is trying to build an interesting career, and I will enjoy watching him do so.

      • Scarlett says:

        It ain’t that serious, Anname.

Do you get paid to defend Robbie on literally every single post? Unclutch those pearls and relax a little.

      • Mia 4S says:

Run Annie run! The Twihards (Rob edition) have descended! I love how people take this so personally. He’s sold out, that’s fine, they all do.. well not Daniel Day Lewis or Christian Bale, but he’s smart enough to know he is not that good. He will need to play the game. Oh I how I hope his commercials sparkle!!

      • JS says:

What I don’t fully understand Annie is that you gave the impression you were a fan of his until well…you know…

But now you seem to be dissing him at all levels. I’m curious. How could you ever have considered yourself a fan of someone you seem to see as a talent-less mediocrity? And, if he is such a loser, why do you bother to comment on him so extensively? Something not entirely adding up here!

@Scarlet – clearly you are missing my point entirely. I was comparing career paths. Both Winslet and diCaprio deliberately chose smaller indie films that went nowhere fast after TITANIC rather than follow the obvious blockbuster route that many were advocating.

The reality is that if a film is super successful, the actors are pressured to deliver more of the same [ or similar]. My comment is comparing Pattinson’s move with that.

A previous poster brought up JGL/Ryan Gosling which i pointed out is an unfair comparison because those guys have spent years in indies building up their reputations which they are still known for despite making block busters now.

I agree that not all Indies are good but in terms of percentages and quality, majority of block busters are rubbish.

And finally, i wouldn’t take the best film oscar as a measure of quality because TITANIC was nominated with LA CONFIDENTIAL,GOOD WILL HUNTING,AS GOOD AS IT GETS and THE FULL MONTY. I am still stunned that out of that field, TITANIC won.

Just wanted to say that I FINALLY got around to watching Bel Ami during the Great Hurricane Sandy Meltdown and I don’t get all the hate for this film.

I’ve watched dozens, probably hundreds of similar costume dramas over the years and I thought it was perfectly fine and that ALL the actors did a great job.

If Rob had never been in Twilight and no one knew who he was, he would look like every other young good looking British pretty boy in that role and would most likely have been praised as a “promising newcomer.” No difference in his quality of acting and that of Colin Firth, Rupert Graves and many other handsome schoolboys in their earliest roles. Oh and Rupert Everett — btw LAK, whats with all the British Ruperts in acting???

      • LAK says:

@Boredsuburbanhousewife – How are you doing with the hurricane? It looks really bad on our news. Are you badly hit??

With regards the Ruperts….it’s a class thing. it is purely coincidence that so many of the actors we are exporting are from the upper middle/upper classes. Rupert is a very common name in those classes.

      • Mary says:

Trust me, Gosling, Garfield, Eisenberg and whoever and whatever would kill to work for Cronenberg, Michod, Herzog and Suvaire. In fact Robert auditioned for Rover because Michod rarely use non-australian actor. Please stop. You are just embarassing yourself, Annie. It is obvious that you haven’t seen any Herzog.

      • Mia 4S says:

@Mary. Would it be uncouth of me to point out that while Herzog has done some great work in the past one of his most recent films was a TERRIBLE sequel to Bad Lieutenant starring “I’ll do anything for the cash” Nicholas Cage? As for Michod, this will only be his second full length film. To try and make these directors out as hugely picky and being in their films as some huge honor is more than a bit premature. We will see.

      • Mazunte says:

I think it is a very smart move to work with smaller independent and interesting directors after the (crappy) Twilight and take the Dior contract for the $ and prestige (it is a great brand and it has beautiful and tasteful adds). Fassbender and Gosling, for example, who are amid the best actors of their generation, had, in my opinion, some of their best performances in indie movies: Hunger, Shame and A Dangerous Method for Fassy, and Half Nelson, Lars, Blue Valentine for Gosling. They were great in Fish Tank and The Believer too. Small, indie movies give the actors more freedom and it is the best way for them to improve their skills.

Everyone’s entitled to change their minds. Two years is a long time, so changing it does not make him an hypocritical.

        Just my opinion…

      • Freya Magritt says:

To Mazunte Exactly what I think! He needs time to detach himself from Twilight and to build up his acting skills. And he’s choosing supporting roles to have the opportunity to work with the best – actors and directors. Contract with Dior is a good way to stay relevant and earn extra money. Anyway, expensive contracts are better than cheap PR games.

    • Dani says:

Please stop comparing Titanic to Twilight. Titanic has some sort of substance and was based more or less off of something that actually happened (sinking shit etc.). Twilight is all FICTIONAL, made to aim at a younger demographic. Leo and Kate actually had insane amount of talent when they filmed it, and still do.

Kristen will NEVER be able to compete with Kate but Rob is in a way the second coming of Leo. Leo got better with age, and I have a feeling Rob will too. Regardless of who he works with (really, the actors make the movie, not the producers, writers etc) he does have a future lying ahead of him. He makes good film choices, he takes parts that fit him now. Even if the films don’t make an insane amount of money, he’s still remembered.

  12. bns says:

…but he looks like he smells like beer, sweat, and piss.

  13. Lauren says:

He is beautiful cleaned up. He likes hobo style on his downtime, but he cleans up nicely and always looks great at big events. Smart for Dior because he is likable and sensually photogenic and smart for him for the money with a great brand to help in whatever he wants to pursue in life.

From the front, his nose is crooked/leans to the left. In profile, his nose looks like it was bashed in with a frying pan.

        Glaring asymmetry = unphotogenic

    • Annie says:

I don’t think Rob is a man who can handle a woman yet. He strikes me as someone who gets intimidated by mature, strong women and can only date young girls. Like Leo DiCaprio. Why else would he date an immature brat who is yet to leave adolescence, mentally?

  16. Beth says:

Oh Kaiser, a real Rob fan would know he gave an interview claiming that being the face of a brand is stupid. In fact he seems pretty adamant about it. Check out the  4 minute mark.

I admit to getting a perverse pleasure watching Rob fans explain how this isnt selling out. So basically he either WILL take a cheater back OR he will play the PR game and fake a relationship with a cheater AND he WILL be the face of a brand for money even though he thinks it is stupid

    • Anname says:

I will say it again, he felt it would have been stupid for him at the time, because he was overexposed and felt like he had no credibility (he was probably right about that). He is at a different place in his career now.

Gosh, how much are you being paid to defend Rob of everyone and everything in this site? Relax girl!

      • Miss Bennett says:

        @Anname
Do you know Mr. Pattinson personally? Because you speak for him as though you do. Are you one of his management team? A family member perhaps? Otherwise, I can not account for your need to respond to and correct every post you don’t happen to agree with. Don’t misunderstand me, I too like him and think he has a great deal of potential. However, I accept that others may not agree with me, and unless they are outrageously inaccurate, or outright lying, they are entitled to their opinions. I admire your persistence but perhaps it could be put to a better use?

    • Annie says:

They’re full if sh*t, him and Kristen. All the pretention in the world and very little substance and truth to back it up. They do the opposite of everything they say all the time. Remember when he said he doesn’t think he’s part of the 1%?

I don’t care what they do, but I’d respect them more if they weren’t such hypocrites. Just be sincere or just be quiet. Yeah, I would take a campaign if it’s for a good brand. Or, no maybe not right now. But first they sh*t on people who do ad campaigns and then say “Oh, I only accepted because Nicholas Ghesquiere is an artist~”. A woman who dresses like hillbilly, does not know or understand fashion at all. Plain and simple. And that ad campaign was everything but artistic.

It’s the whole “holier than thou” mask.

And I used to be quite a fan. But I think there’s little authentic Rob left. IF there ever was an authentic Rob…

I’m starting to think he never showed his true colours to the public. I also think he wants to be a major HW player and is now slowly starting to come out. Anyway, if he’d been such a goofy, autentic British ‘fella’ he wouldn’t have moved to LA permanently.

And maturing and all is good and well. I’ve been reading that argument in his defenders comments today here. But he ridiculed endorsements like this just a YEAR ago. Not five years or something. Last year, as in 2011. As his thoughts about cheating were also quite different then.

Well, so will the real Robert Pattinson stand up? I won’t wait around to see who that is, but good luck to those who do. And good luck being a brand Rob, you once had the promise to be an original.

I approve of this only because it makes Kristen’s fashion deal look even more budget. Dior >>>> Balenciaga, even if we ignore the zombie portraits her campaign consisted of.

    • LAK says:

You really know nothing about fashion if you think Balenciaga is budget or even comparable to Dior.

      • Loop says:

If you knew anything about fashion you’d know that balenciaga has been anything but solid over the last 5 years, it has been way far from its roots. Their big sales are on leather goods. Their latest fragrance campaign was a disaster (using a piece from a very famous 2006 campaign with Jennifer Connely!)
Christian Dior has a couture division, and now with Raf Simons as creative director Dior it’s way hotter that balenciaga rn.
Even if Balenciaga was established earlier, Dior is way bigger and recognizable and that’s a fact.

      • LAK says:

OMG what are you talking about?? Dior only hires people who reference the new look. At least Galliano did it with Flair. Raf Simons is simply copying. No originality and no flair. The current collection is interchangeable with the new look. boring. boring. boring.

Balenciaga has always had an interesting, influential look. When the designers reference the archives, there is much to choose from unlike Dior. i have never seen a more boring fashion show than the Dior. At least with Galliano at the helm, there were theatrics to distract.

As for general sales, i hate to break it to you but ALL design houses make their money from perfume and accessories. Dior’s cash cow is the perfume and bags whereas Balenciega is the bags.

And as for couture…there are not enough couture customers in the world to make those divisions profitable. FACT. it’s all in the service of perfume/accessories sales.

Personally, i never go by perfume campaigns to judge the artistic merit of a brand. And as for Kstew wearing a dress from a previous collection, why shouldn’t she? It was a particularly good collection. it happens all the time. Look at Pippa Middleton at the royal wedding in her white dress from the 2009 pre-fall collection…..

      • loop says:

        Nice essay there rme.
You’re just belittling C.D and I don’t think there’s any need to do that. It doesn’t matter if everything Dior has been boring to you, it’s still a fashion empire, which is way more recognizable than Balenciaga whether you like it or not.

John Galliano’s one the greatest designers of his time(ita with the house dropping him like hot potato after the anti-semitic remarks)even now after all his issues, you can ask anyone in the fashion world and they’d agree with that; and his “theatrics to distract” as you call it are still consider great pieces of art.

Fashion journalists are actually very excited about Raf’s work, he’s brought in a minimalistic+Dior essence approach to the house that was very much needed.

        B. has been more influential since its beginnings, even Christian D called him the Haute Couture Master.
        B. house was established almost 30 years before Dior’s, so your archive bit is nonsense.

Nicholas G. has copied too_ it took him over a decade to have a successful collection in the B. house, in the end he did revived the brand, but he’s not Cristobal and he has been entirely dismissing balenciaga’s characteristics, it’s not Nicholas Guequierre’s label, it’s Balenciaga.

        B. is still one of my all time favs even over Dior, (S2006 is a dream) but imo it has been a huge disappointment from f2007 onwards(I’m deciding on the last collection, but it was refreshing, mainly because it went back to its roots).

My sales bit was to point out that balenciaga is not as big in the fragrance dep as Dior. It’s common knowledge that perfumes and leather goods are the cash cow of many fashion houses, in the end they’re the most affordable brand products for common folks.

In my honest opinion, I thought the Florabotanica(?!) campaign was a flop creatively and artistically speaking, great idea, poorly executed. The dress has been overly used, from editorials to
campaigns, any fashion enthusiast can recognized that dress, and which kinda of belong to Jennifer Connelly.

The spokesperson choice was merely based on demographics lbr. But going from Jen C, Charlotte G, Cate B, to kstew was a huge downgrade.

“We have heard that he turned down the chance to pose for Burberry a year back so Dior’s persuasive techniques must be finely honed, though Rob does also wear Dior on the red carpet.”

    • Janet says:

He projects the wrong image to represent Burberry. He’d have to shave off that neck scruff first.

  33. Ann says:

Hollywood economics have changed drastically in recent times, and will continue to change. Films are harder and harder to get financing for. The era of fat actor paychecks is ending.

Actors need to carefully balance blockbusters, indies and endorsements to remain successful going forward, especially young actors who are still building their careers. There is a reason you see even actors of Brad Pitt’s caliber and experience now doing endorsements.

It’s easy to say that an actor/actress made millions on a franchise movie. But a successful actor now has a staff of sorts to support. Their salary pays not only for themselves, but also their agent, manager, publicist, PA, bodyguard, stylist, etc. A successful actor becomes more like a small company or brand that needs supporting. Indies pay relatively little; sometimes the actor is just working for scale. So an actor that wants to work in indies, doing art movies with good directors, needs to supplement the indie work with big budget studio films and/or endorsements.

Robert seems to be getting some good advice here. He is young and still learning the business. His views will continue to evolve and change. Even most 30 year olds would tell you that their opinions have changed since they were in their early twenties and starting out. Experience and maturity come with time.

@another Nina. Don’t be so harsh to him. His image was damaged due to the “cheating thing”. His team has a lot of making up to do. It is, probably, a calculated decision to turn it 180 degrees to detach him from Saga and KStew as much as possible. After all, it’s not him who started the circus, but there’s still a chance to turn it to his benefit.

    • Miss Bennett says:

Insightful and accurate, great post. 🙂

  34. ernie says:

Are you kidding me? Fine smelling man is not something I associate with the image of Pattinson. He and his gf are one of the very few celebs out there whose b.o. almost seeps through their pictures. How respectable companies like Dior and Balenciaga chose them is beyond me. Them officially representing a certain fragrance would actually be an eliminating factor for me when buying perfume.

    • hmmm says:

Yes! There seems to be a disconnect between respective images. I think of Dior like other upscale images- classy, well-groomed, confident. That’s why Brad Pitt for Chanel is so incongruous and ridiculous, not to mention cringe-inducing. Neither of these men represent someone who knows scent from BO. Seriously, why not employ someone who looks like they actually enjoy the product, or at the very least know what it is. Major fail.

RP still looks like a werewolf in the pix above.

      • Janet says:

But apparently Brad Pitt’s ad has been a success for Chanel, or Chanel would have pulled it already. So Dior thinks Pattinson can do the same for them.

      • ernie says:

It’s completely mind-boggling… Is this supposed to be a conscious effort to fix their bad hygiene reputation? Because it’s doing the opposite for me. Now they appear to be a pair of smelly hipsters covering their b.o. with high-end perfume. Which is even more disgusting.

They should’ve started with basic shower gel endorsement. One step at a time.

      • ernie says:

        @Janet

I think Chanel already has too much invested in Pitt’s campaign to be pulling it now. They are going to have to ride this one out and then regroup for the future fragrance.
Also, I’m not sure if it isn’t a little early to officially declare it success or failure. Takes time to see how it fares sale wise.

Anyway, Pattinson has now ruined Dior experience a little for me.

      • Janet says:

@ernie: Pitt is one of a handful of actors who can sell anything on his name alone. I don’t think Chanel will regret their investment. Pattinson is nowhere near that status yet and his public image took a serious hit when he took KStew back. Overnight he went from a likeable, sympathetic personality to a spineless tool.

  35. T.C. says:

You’ll knew this was coming Lainey Gossip’s two cents: Pattinson is working the circuit, getting in front of the right people, letting them know he’s there to participate — in the game, of course. They don’t just sit around reading scripts and playing guitar, thinking about art and being “above” the business, you know. To stick around in the business, there’s a certain amount of selling out that has to happen. Pattinson, with the new Dior partnership, is now officially a brand, just like his girlfriend. And, as I remarked where his girlfriend was concerned, when you make that decision, to go from an actor to a brand, to go from acting to selling fancy-smelling bottles, you are expected to behave like a brand

  38. renata says:

Pattinson’s agents are wise to get every penny they can for him, as quickly as they can. This guy is a no-talent, and it’s only a matter of time till even the most rigid, erect twihard realizes it. His people should cash in while they can.

This argument about particular directors hiring him, which supposedly m-u-s-t mean he’s actually a good actor, is totally bogus! Hey, even classy directors need a plus in the $$$ column now and then — they need it to continue producing the sort of movies they actually love — and so they hire this clown to beef up the box office on what would otherwise probably have been an offbeat, indie project that few people ever even see, but yields nice reviews and achieves meager financial success.

Comparisons to DiCaprio??? Are you kidding me??? DiCaprio can act. DiCaprio had training. Pattinson was a guy with a few small parts who was really hoping for a career as a musician, and instead got VERY, VERY, VERY, lucky by getting hired for his looks to play the part of a dead person. Did any serious actor actually even audition for that role (I’m seriously asking — I really don’t know)? Heck, this guy’s future is so dim that he even takes back a girl who publicly cheated on him! Obviously he doesn’t even believe in himself — he feels he deserves the leftovers.

Pattinson did very nicely off the Twilight franchise. He does legitimately seem to be a nice fellow (though who knows what he is in real life….), and he’s made enough money to live nicely for the rest of his days. He’s gotten his pay-off. But please, don’t confuse any of that with having talent as an actor when the fact is his only real talent was being in the right place at the right time. That and constantly sucking in his cheeks while being photographed — geez, that drives me nuts, it looks so daft!

I am also incredulous that you think Rob’s reviews in Cosmopolis are “mixed to negative.”

    Wake up.

With that one statement you just excused yourself from the adult table.
