Sally Field and the ladies in red at the Oscars: who worked it?

The most notable red dress at last night’s Oscars was of course Jennifer Aniston’s Valentino, which Kaiser discussed earlier this morning. It was a real missed styling opportunity for Aniston, but aren’t they all? She’s nothing if not consistent. In contrast we have the lovely and talented Sally Field, who has mixed it up this awards season and took a calculated risk, also in Valentino. It’s a bold color choice in a full-coverage gown and it fits beautifully for the most part but I’m not fond of that tiered ruffled skirt and train, which looks huge and very Gone With The Wind. Maybe it was in homage to the Lincoln era. I like her hair and makeup, in my opinion this is how you do bangs.

Sally’s pre-recorded bit early in the night with Seth MacFarlane hitting on her, while he was in costume as the flying nun, was hilarious and well done. I loved how she was just snacking casually the whole time and was all “you’re making me uncomfortable.”

In comparison fellow Academy Award winner (not last night) Marcia Gay Harden did not work her bright red David Meister mermaid gown, which just fit badly around her bustline. Meister also dressed Melissa McCarthy, he’s her go-to designer, and I’m thinking that his gowns have great detail but poor fit. Marcia’s hair and makeup were lovely though, I like her loose curls and subtle makeup.

Olivia Munn was one of the few ladies in Marchesa last night and boy it really showed. I’m wondering why she was there at all. Her boobs looked like they were going to pop out of that too-small too-tight bodice and it looked very showgirl with gold brocade on top of yards of draped bunched silk. She obviously thought she looked hot, though, she always does (think that).

Bonus: wife of the guy who won for Brave, Mark Andrews. He was cute in that kilt and I loved how his co-writer, Brenda Chapman, gave a shout out to her daughter for inspiring the character.

Sally Field is beautiful, Olivia Munn, well I think she always looks vulgar

  2. Aiobhan says:

Sally looks great but they should have cut the train on the dress a little to fit her small frame. I was going to write that she was GONE with The Wind Fabulous but I that would have cheapened it a little.

Olivia almost accident is nothing in comparison to Brandi Glanville’s disaster of a dress. I don’t like Olivia that much either but she kind of looks good here.

    • deehunny says:

Not a fan of Munn either but she still looks hot here. Vulgar but not like Brandi. Well said.

Matters when the sweetheart neckline is too low like that. Full vs Demi converge.

  3. JL says:

I Love red, however ALL of those are horrendous…..

  4. ruby says:

With Olivia I think the main problem is how ill-fitted the bodice is.. It was obviously meant for someone with smaller breasts, so it looks wrong.

  5. L says:

Sally’s dress would have been better if it was a shade darker and had 3/4 sleeves.

Jacki Weaver from Silver linings playbook was best dressed in red for me. Age appropriate and tailored like a dream.

  6. Cherry says:

Is Sally Field’s dress the same one that Rihanna wore to the Grammies? I imagine it isn’t, but it looks very similar, no?

  7. Amy says:

Olivia from the waist down looks like a bridesmaid. From the waist up, an ice skater.

  8. Lisa says:

Love sally, hate the dress (especially in the photos). Hate the sheer sleeves and the nutty train.

  9. Dhavynia says:

Everyone on tv gushed about JA but Sally Fields was the best in red

  10. NerdMomma says:

Olivia Munn’s face looks totally, totally different than it did last year. What’s up with that?

  11. Amanda says:

Sally Field is just TOO adorable! Love her. Don’t hate me, but I actually liked Olivia’s dress. If it had not been too tight in the boost, I think she would have looked great.

  12. Nicolette says:

With all the money these people have, access to the most beautiful fashion creations out there, the best of the best designers lining up offering their gowns, why is it so hard for these people to look good? So many are just ill fitting and boring.

  13. ataylor says:

I loved Olivia’s dress. I didn’t like the fit up top though. I hate that look. I just want to pull up their strapless dresses for them — other than that, one of the few Marchesa dresses I have ever liked.

  14. I feel a bit ashamed of this, but I actually like some Marchesa dresses. Including Olivia’s. Yes, the fit at the bust is wierd but the red/gold and the cut is just so glamourous and opulent.

  15. Miss Kiki says:

love Sally’s dress BUT her hair is not doing it for me at all, it’s not polished enough.

Olivia Munn as always, leaves me scratching my head and wondering why she is a *thing*

  16. lucy2 says:

Not sure if I like Sally’s or not. She looks great regardless.
I can’t stand when bodices are too low or too small. Olivia’s is both.

  17. i'm french don't kill me says:

my boyfriend is obsessed by Marcia Gay Harden and i like Sally Field ‘s dress

  18. Mrs.Darcy says:

Sally’s dress is swamping her but I love that she went all out. It must be annoying when your category is so stacked in one person’s favour, love that she made fun of that with Seth. Olivia’s dress is the tack, Marcia’s not much better. The Scottish guy’s kilt is too short (which he should know presuming he’s Scottish – always below the knee). Other than that nice to see a kilt on the carpet, where was Gerry’s?

  19. Arock says:

About the last pic- I didn’t see the oscars but I trust the reporting/writing on this blog so I’m just gonna ask— is that a dude?

    • momoftwo says:

I was just thinking the same thing! I feel really bad if it is his wife (that’s as bad as people asking if you’re pregnant when you’re not!)

      • Ayame says:

I thought the same thing! But if you check out google images for Mark Andrews wife, you can find other photos and she’s clearly a woman. She is fairly masculine in those photos as well, but I think the photo above is just exceptionally unflattering!

    • taxi says:

I wonder the same thing. Looks as if wifey has a 5 o’clock shadow.

    • Meredith says:

I was going to say the same thing. Very broad muscular shoulders and large boned features in the face. Overall makes her look a bit like a drag queen. Maybe she should avoid the strapless look next time. But at least they both look to be having fun at the party!

  20. Bijlee says:

Brave won an Oscar? Pixars worst effort ever won an Oscar. That movie SUCKED.

  21. sddwtb says:

No, Sally, I don’t like you, I ADORE you.
    LOVE HER!!!

  22. Dirtnap says:

I did not like Marcia’s hair down simply because it was interfering with the beading on the sleeves. Untangling those hairs out of the beading throughout the night is in no way elegant. Also, a deep conditioning treatment or a hair gloss every few weeks as we age goes a long way, and I speak from experience. I wish Sally would put a little shine in her hair to bring out the sparkle she always has in her eyes!

  23. RHONYC says:

Boniva does the body good or what? holy moly, how old is Sally? she looks amazing!

i liked Marcia Gay’s dress color on her…hated her ‘Kardashian’ hair. too contrived. she always looks best with up dos in my opinion. đŸ˜‰

  24. MsAubra says:

I get tickeled and laugh cuz her and my mom look alike!

  25. NeoCleo says:

Sally Field is still so damn cute.

  26. Jen34 says:

Sally can do no wrong. I thought she looked amazing.

  27. Diana says:

Sally was hillarious with Seth and she looked lovely. So happy Brave won. Olivia Munn allways looks so trashy to me…

  28. serena says:

I love Sally Field, I really love her, but god that dress is horrible on her -and horrible in general- and it kind of reminds me of an ugly version of Rihanna’s latest red gown.

  29. Dirty Martini says:

The only dress in red that I loved was Olive Munn’s. Thought it was yummy.

  30. Patrice says:

I too would have loved Sally’s gown more if it just went straight to the floor in the same material as the top of it, no ruffles.

I’m someone who generally hates it when other women hate on Olivia Munn just because, but I’ll admit that my first thoughts when I saw her on the red carpet was “How in the world did she score an invite, and for what exactly??” (The very same things I asked about how/why BRANDI GLANVILLE got in!) I guess the Marchesa gown explains it though…As a woman with an ample bust, it completely blows my mind that anyone would ever wear a neckline line like this outside the bedroom. One false move or even breath and both her whole breasts would be exposed!! No.Thank.You. (Just, why??)

Marcia’s longer, lush hair looks nice but good lord she seriously needs to lay off the ‘tox and fillers! Girlfriend’s face looks like something straight out of Madame Toussauds! Yikes.

  31. Jane says:

She looks pretty darn good for 66, but I am not digging that dress. It makes her look even older.
