Jenna Bush-Hager welcomes Margaret Laura ‘Mila’ Hager, Dubya’s first grandbaby

First of all, did you know George W. Bush has a Facebook page? He does! And did you know that Barney Bush (the Scottish terrier) passed away a few months ago? Sad. But George W. Bush has one reason to celebrate – his daughter Jenna has just welcomed her first child, a daughter! Jenna announced her pregnancy back in December after she seemed to be showing quite a bit during a segment on Today (she’s a Today correspondent), and she later confirmed the news to People Magazine. This is Dubya’s first grandchild. Jenna and her husband Henry Hager have named their daughter Margaret Laura Hager, and she will go by Mila Hager. That’s cute!

The former First Family has welcomed their first grandchild. Former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush confirmed the new addition Sunday on Facebook.

“Laura and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our grandchild, Margaret Laura ‘Mila’ Hager,” he writes. “Mila, daughter of Jenna and Henry Hager, is named for her grandmothers.”

The couple’s daughter arrived at 8:43 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 in New York City.

“Jenna and Mila are healthy. And our family is elated,” Bush writes.

Prior to welcoming her new addition, the Today contributor didn’t know the sex of her baby.

“I really love the relationship I have with my mother,” Hager, 31, previously told PEOPLE at her baby shower, “so to have a daughter would be special.”

However, there’s still no word on what the little one will call her grandparents.

“My grandfather and my father’s grandfather were both called Gampy, so maybe it will be Gampy,” she recently told PEOPLE, adding with a laugh, “but my father did also say he wanted to be called Jefe, which is chief in Spanish.”

[From People]

Naming your daughter after her grandmother is common enough, and it’s incredibly common in the Bush family. Both of Dubya’s daughters are named after their grandmother. Dubya’s daughter Barbara was named after George W. Bush’s mother and Jenna was named after Laura Bush’s mother. I’m actually glad they specified that “Margaret” is for Henry’s mother otherwise I would have thought that Jenna had named her daughter after Margaret Thatcher. Which would have been epic! But “Mila” as a nickname for Margaret? I’ve never heard that, but I like it.

Anyway, congrats to Jenna and Henry! Congrats to Auntie Barbara and to happy grandparents George and Laura. I’m sure everybody is really happy!

  2. JenD says:

Aww, congratulations to them! And I like the nickname.

  3. Seagulls says:

Pretty name, adorable nickname. I’m no fan of her father,s politics, but good naming!

  4. faun says:

    They’re both adorable.

  5. Hannah says:

Congrats! I like Mila as a nickname for Margaret, more so than Maggie.

    • NoM oreFas hionAccessories says:

Peggy is the nickname for Margaret.

    • Andrea says:

      Margaret + Laura = Mila

Makes sense to me, but it took a moment. I really like it!

      • Me says:

Mila is not a nickname for Margaret…it’s not a combo for Margaret + Laura. There’s no I in Margaret. It’s like I’m naming my daughter Summer and nicknaming her Sophie. It’s not even a stretch she just looks stupid. Mila is a nickname for Camila or Milena. Just stop.

  6. Barrett says:

She reminds me of her grandma in her prego pics. I see an essence of Barbara Bush!

  7. Amy says:

I wonder if Mila is a portmanteau of both names, like M for Margaret and La for Laura? Cute name!

  8. SydneySpy says:

    Meh.

  9. momoftwo says:

I bet Dubya will be a fun grandpa!

  10. muffin says:

it’s mila because the M part is for Margaret and the La part is for Laura. Margaret Laura – Mila.

  11. Cheshire says:

    +1

  12. sunnyinseattle says:

Yay. Congrats. So happy for them. Wait….. No one bitched about her weight gain? 😉 She looked great!

    • amy says:

What about her weight gain?? You are seeing something I’m not because it looks pretty normal to me – certainly not excessive. Sounds like you are trying to start something.

      • sunnyinseattle says:

That’s my point. She looked great but everyone judges others for gaining too much. When you look good, no one says anything. Not starting something darling, I have always been a defender of pregnant woman. Don’t put words in my mouth! 🙁

      • sunnyinseattle says:

Sigh. Reading comprehension honey. Try it. I said at the end she looks great. Did you miss that?

  13. Eli says:

    Awesome! Congratulation’s!!!

  14. mimi says:

    Congrats!
His daughters always seemed so lovely and good natured.

I do wish the child would have been “Bush” or “Bush- Hager” and not just “Hager”.

Why do some women nowadays forget that their children will not have the same last name (or part thereof) as theirs.
I don’t like it at all. It reeks of patriarchy.
It’s 2013. Time to show some progress ladies.

    • sunnyinseattle says:

Seriously? So she wanted to be traditional and that us an issue for you? Whatever. Wait. Brace for it…..I voted for all the Bush’s. Were you old enough to vote for them? Lol Do what you want woman, don’t listen to the young ones. 🙂

    • RobN says:

And when Bush-Hager marries Smith-Johnson, do they become Bush-Hager-Smith-Johnson? I think the hyphen thing started to die out when people realized that it is unsustainable after the first generation. I do really like using mom’s maiden name as the kid’s middle name.

      • sunnyinseattle says:

That’s a cool thing. Course Guilfoyle may be an odd middle name, lol, but for other’s I love the idea!

    • Marigold says:

You do realize Jenna got her last name from her father, right? Is that not enough patriarchy for you? And RobN makes a great point-how many hyphenated names will her great great great great grandchildren have? Honestly, let people choose their own family naming traditions without hounding them about it. When it’s your last name, you can care. By the way, some of us choose to take a new last name from marriage because our old last name came from a deadbeat. Don’t just assume people only change their name because they’re some old fashioned traditionalist.

    • Belle says:

How very judgmental of you. Yeesh, I’m sick of the ‘Come on… women’s rights… yaaay! Stand up for a woman’s right to choose… as long as I agree with her choices… or I will mock, judge and criticize them!!’ crowd.

      Your comment reeks of hypocrisy.

  15. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Yay so precious and sweet! And now that he’s retired from office, G.W. can just chill and be a good “Gampy.” Happy for them!

  16. JC says:

Love that Dubs wants to be called Jefe. He IS going to be a fun grandpa. He looks so happy in the pics they released.

  17. sunnyinseattle says:

Amazing how little responses this got. 🙁 If it had been Obama, obviously down the road, you all would of been all over it. I didn’t vote for Obama, but I would still be happy for him if he had a Grandbaby.

    • anotherrandom says:

I honestly just don’t get the “congrats” responses to posts like these. They’re never going to read it so to respond like that just doesn’t seem to make much sense. Now to comment on the name, or weight gain, or something else, that makes sense to me. I also don’t think I’d care so super much about one of Obama’s daughter’s having a baby in 15yrs. It’s a nice footnote, but otherwise not really front page news (though it was on the Today webpage).

  18. Lee says:

Congratulations to the family! I like the Bush girls – they do a lot of charity work and seem to have grown into respectable young women.

  19. lucy2 says:

Aw, congrats to them, that’s nice. I like the name – cute nickname, plus a nice, dignified name for adulthood.

  20. brin says:

    Congrats to them all!!

  21. Suze says:

I have a soft spot for Jenna. And I like the name. Very solid and a cute nickname. I miss nicknames!

    Congrats to all!

  22. Dirty martini says:

Lively name. Happy for everyone. And thrilled to see a happy post, no snark!

  23. Belle says:

Awwwe, so happy for them 🙂 The first grand baby, so much fun… and I also think W. will be a fun grandpa!

Lovely name too… I agree with those who think Mila was their way of combining Margaret and Laura. Cute!
