The 2008 Razzie Nominations: Worst of the year in film

Speed Racer
The 2008 Razzie Award nominations have been released, chronicling the year’s worst films and performances. There were so many stinkers to choose from - I’d bet it’s harder to pick the nominees for this than it is the Oscars and Golden Globes. This year’s big “winners” include the movie Speed Racer, which has topped many critics’ “Worst” lists, while frontrunners for worst actor/actress include Dane Cook, Larry the Cable Guy, Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson. No big surprises there. One choice that might surprise some is Tom Cruise for his performance in Valkyrie. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

[From Film Drunk]

I am pleased to report that I haven’t seen any of these movies. I was warned by friends to avoid “The Happening,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, at all costs. I could tell by the trailers for “The Love Guru” that is was going to be awful. I didn’t see the Indiana Jones movie, either. It just looked bad to me. Maybe some others who have seen it can tell me for sure. One movie that definitely should have been on this list was that horrible Martin Lawrence/Raven Symone movie “College Road Trip.” I took my 9-year-old to see it and let me tell you, they should have let adults bring their own booze into that hot mess. That’s 2 hours of my life I will never get back! Anyway, my condolences to anyone who spent their hard earned money on any of these movies.

  1. FYI: Those aren’t the real nominations. The nominations are announced on Jan. 21st, a day before the Oscar noms are announced. That’s how it is every year.

  2. Well i disagree with some. I think speed racer is good, it’s a bit different kind of movie but it’s good for me,especially during the final race. Ashton kutcher n cameron diaz movie is simple n nice, as well funny. Wont put it in the worst list. i like keanu reeves but too bad the movie is boring, and his character is boring too.

  5. Huh, me and the huzz seem to be the only people who saw and liked the Day The Earth Stood Still (remake). And I liked it because of Keanu not inspite of him. Jaden’s character annoyed the crap out of me but maybe that’s what they were aiming for. If so then he did a damn good job.

  6. Worst couple: Al Pacino and His Hair? Priceless.

  7. I saw The Love Guru twice. I laughed, more than twice. I’ll get my coat.

  8. Indiana Jones wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t necessary. I’d still rank it above Temple of Doom.

@Mairead — Fast Show reference? Brilliant!

  9. I am still scratching my head as to why Emile Hirsch signed on for Speed Racer. The guy is a promising young actor and has played several roles of substance in great movies. So what’s up with Speed Racer, Emile? Had you smoked an enormous joint right before you read the script?

  10. I haven’t seen Valkryie yet, but was Tom Cruise really that bad? I’ve read some criticisms about his American accent in the film but that’s it.

  11. Wth is Reese doing on that list?

  12. Jennifer Connelly?
    She can actually act.

Angelina Jolie is shouting and overacting in the most hideous way and they have Jennifer Connelly on the list?

I mean, I can appreciate the fact she is not giving us another unprepared ridiculous accent like in Alexander or A Mighty Heart, but her overacting should definitely get her nominated on the short list for worst actress.

As for the guys- Keanu Reeves and Adam Sandler did exactly what they needed to do (each in his own category).

You can’t claim Adam Sandler is not a funny and able comedian, and Keanu needed to portray a robotic- emotionless “being”.

They are talebted actors (including Jennifer) and should not be on the list.

  13. I’m actually surprised to see Reese Witherspoon on this list. Goes to show you how valuable THIS information is (this year anyway)

  14. MSat, I also feel your pain, College Road Trip was the absolute worst movie I saw last year. I so wanted my 2 hours back…now I hate Martin Lawrence so freakin’ much, I don’t hate Raven Symone though, she still is that cute little girl from the Cosby’s to me (even though she blew up something fierce!)

  15. I feel so very ashamed for having actually kinda liked The Happening. *hides* Don’t judge me! I just think Marky Mark is pretty! And the gory scenes were interesting!

Except for that one with the lawnmower. That was just dumb. And the lion cage made me giggle inadvertently.

  16. @legend: I have actually read good reviews for Valkyrie. The biggest criticism has been how long the movie is. I’m definitely no TC fan, but I do admit he does have a lot of presence on the screen and he is charismatic. Unfortunately, his lunacy with the scientology cult has just ruined public perception of him. I admit that even if he made a truly great movie, I’d have a difficult time setting aside my dislike for him long enough to just enjoy the flick. He has ruined his own career, which is a shame. Lots of other actors have wacky beliefs, but they don’t stick them in your face and make you hate them for it.

  17. TC couldn’t bother to either learn German or fake a German accent for the film, so how good could it really be?

  18. “Rambo” should not belong here. It is a good movie.

    It continues the Rambo mythos.

You either get these movies, or you don’t.

  19. Reeves and worst career achievement for the day the earth..? Worst actor? Exaggeration, truelly. This movie is not great, but is not so hopeless too. ;)

Little odd ranking for me. ;)
